PIE & MASH
A family run business for the last fve generations
Our retail shops in East London and Essex
have established a loyal following for our
great-tasting, great-value pie and mash.
We are also very proud suppliers to Asda,
Nisa and Budgens stores as well as local
pubs, cafes and sporting venues. We also
keep the ex-pat community satisfed through
Iceland supermarkets in mainland Spain, the
Canary Islands and, more recently, Cyprus.
ALSO AVAILABLE:
• VEGAN & VEGETARIAN PIES
• POACHED SALMON
Pie and mash goes back to the
19th century, when Dutch
ships delivered live eels to
Billingsgate Market. Before the
fish market was founded, the
ships sailed up the Thames to
Ludgate Street, where their goods
were sold on the quayside.
The parsley liquor was brought
with them, therefore the liquor
from the very beginning was an
accompaniment with the eels. It
is also just as delicious with any
fish, as well as pie and mash.
14 HIGH STREET, WANSTEAD
(Mon to Sat: 9.30am - 6pm & Sun: 10am - 5pm)
In the beginning, the pies were
filled with eels. Nowadays, we are
to proud to say all our pies are
handmade, and filled with 100%
Scotch beef and delicious gravy.
Welcome...
Time to start planning for Christmas.
Six innocent words that will make perfect
sense to some, and will put the fear of God
into others. As a man, I largely fall into the
latter category. If I ignore the list of things
that need to be done, it may go away. As an
editor, my plans are well underway already,
striving as I do each year to have seasonally suitable content
for these pages. But as a father, thoughts of Christmas have not
abated since last year’s early morning wake-up call – with two
young children insistent on watching festive films in perpetuity,
screenings of Home Alone, Elf and Nativity are never far away, and
were surprisingly refreshing during the heatwave.
But in the midst of a pandemic, plans of all descriptions are
largely left on hold. With 2020 diaries among the most redundant
of Christmas 2019 gifts, we are all now well-versed with changing
our plans. So, with less than four months to go, it may be time to
get planning, not least so there is enough time left to prepare a
plan B, C and D as well.
If Kevin McCallister taught us anything, it is that planning
is essential. Harry and Marv wouldn’t have suffered half the
light-hearted-cum-life-threatening injuries they did had it not
been for the inexplicably abandoned youngster’s incredibly
well-planned-cum-illegal booby traps. I certainly don’t
advocate attaching blowtorches to doors as a means of home
security – and nor do I advocate excessive viewing of nineties’
Christmas movies for that matter. But now we are in
the post-summer run-up to Christmas, I do
recommend making your festive plans
with the local economy in mind…
especially if you are staying
home this year as well.
Keeping Wanstead Park’s lakes filled is
‘simply impossible at present’
The state of Wanstead
Park’s lakes has
prompted an
increasing clamour
on social media in
recent weeks. “Local
people have watched
in dismay as the
Ornamental Water is
drying up,” said Richard
Arnopp of the Friends
of Wanstead Parklands.
Water is currently
being pumped into
the lake system from the park’s borehole for
16 hours a day, alternating between Heronry
Pond and Perch Pond. “Despite this pumping,
levels remain low in the Heronry Pond, and
not enough water is reaching the Ornamental
Water via Perch Pond even to stabilise it. Sadly,
there are no easy fixes. A few years ago, the
and events
City of London commissioned a survey of the
lakes, and an assessment of dams is due soon.
This will form the core of a proposed project
to restore the park, but this is not expected
to start until 2024. Massive leakage and
inadequate water inputs mean keeping the
lakes filled is simply impossible at present.”
Call for drivers to
encouraging
businesses to tackle
air pollution caused
by idling engines.
Project’s #EnginesOff
companies to pledge
their drivers and
other employees
will not leave their
own drivers have
also taken the pledge
No art trail this month, but
organisers look ahead to 2021
Petition: help small businesses
comply with social distancing rules
started the petition
Wanstead’s annual art trail will not take place
this month, but organisers are keen to hear
from residents who would like to help stage
next year’s event. “Art Trail Wanstead usually
takes place in September, but coronavirus
made it unsafe to run this year. We would have
staged some interesting activities and shows,
but those plans have been put on hold,” said
trail founder Donna Mizzi. In the absence
of the trail, the Wanstead Village Directory is
pleased to present two local artists in this
issue (pages 52 and 62). Visit wnstd.com/art
Spruce up Wanstead with the
council’s Big Bulb Giveaway
Redbridge Council is giving away over 40,000
spring-flowering bulbs to help improve
local neighbourhoods. “The bulbs are being
given out in time for Redbridge’s Big Planting
Weekend, taking place between 16 and
18 October. The borough-wide planting
movement encourages people to plant
their bulbs in spaces that benefit the local
community,” said a spokesperson. Community
groups, residents and schools can request
the bulbs by completing an online form by
20 September. Visit wnstd.com/bulbs20
A petition is urging Redbridge Council to
better help small businesses comply with
social distancing rules. It follows a fine issued
to a local hairdresser for placing chairs outside
his shop. “Wanstead Hairdressers put three
chairs outside when it opened after lockdown
so elderly customers had somewhere to sit.
The council fined them £100 without warning.
They’re not the only shop this has happened
to,” said Natalie Michaelides, whose petition
received over 150 signatures in 24 hours.
Healthwatch Redbridge: coronavirus
information gathering survey
Wanstead Kinema to return with a
screening of The Lorax
Healthwatch Redbridge is seeking feedback
from local residents about their experiences
of NHS health and social care services during
the pandemic. “We are in regular contact with
hospitals and adult social care services across
Redbridge, receiving updates on how they are
working during this time and what systems
and changes they are making to services. We
will use the responses to ensure local concerns
are identified early and passed on to the
appropriate services. Let your voice be heard,”
said a spokesperson. Visit wnstd.com/hr
GIRLS AND BOYS 3-11
Despite the Wanstead Fringe being cancelled
this year, the popular Wanstead Kinema
will return on 11 September. “Every year, the
Kinema is the most atmospheric event in the
Wanstead calendar. We’re showing Dr Seuss’
The Lorax, which, I think, is a modern classic.
It has a powerfully inspiring message for
young and old about the difference everyone
can make,” said organiser Giles Wilson. The
screening will take place at Wanstead Cricket
Club on Overton Drive from 6.30pm (adults:
Lockdown neighbourly chats give
rise to new Snaresbrook grow zone
Wanstead House reopens for a
new term of classes and activities
Children’s ballet classes are
one of many activities that
take place at Wanstead House
A new grow zone has been established in a
private communal garden in Snaresbrook as
an extension of the Wild Wanstead project.
“Our zone is on the Rivenhall Estate opposite
Eagle Pond. It was inspired by seeing other
Wanstead grow zones and through setting
up a neighbourly WhatsApp chat during
lockdown. It didn’t take much for the residents
of Brooksglade to agree to leave an unmowed
area on the communal lawn and we look
forward to planting some wild flowers in the
spring,” said resident Tina Nieman Da Costa.
Multiple fires on Wanstead Flats
during last month’s heatwave
Feed the swans: low water levels in
park leaves birds hungry
© Rose Stephens
© Rachel Sleet
After several weeks without rain and with
temperatures reaching 35ºC last month,
Wanstead Flats suffered a series of infernos.
“On 10 August, a large blaze burned about one
hectare of tinderbox-dry grassland by Centre
Road car park. Two days later, a series of fires
swept through a swathe of bushes and grass
between the Golden Fleece and Alexandra
Lake. The London Fire Brigade deserves thanks
for a speedy and efficient response… Arson is
suspected for at least one of the blazes,” said
Tim Harris of the Wren Wildlife Group.
With low water levels in Wanstead Park’s
Ornamental Water, the resident swan family
are in need of help. “With less water, the swans
are restricted in their ability to access the
wider lake, and therefore food. We are asking
people to take a detour to the lake to feed
them. The cygnets will need energy to learn
to fly. Seeded brown bread, spinach, kale and
lettuce are all welcome. Thank you to all those
who have already been supporting them,”
said Tracey Adebowale-Jones, who is part of a
volunteer network monitoring local swans.
COVID-19 mortuary site on
Wanstead Flats returns to nature
Helping society nationwide…
and in Wanstead
The site will remain fenced off until summer 2021
to allow the wild flowers and grasses to grow
The temporary mortuary erected on Wanstead
Flats at the height of the coronavirus
pandemic has been removed and will become
a new wild flower habitat. “While coronavirus
is likely to be with us for a long time and we
mustn’t be complacent, the removal of the
mortuary is a welcome sign of normal life
beginning to return to our open spaces… The
site will be sown in autumn and again next
spring with a wild flower seed mix, including
seeds collected from nearby areas of the
forest,” said a City of London spokesperson.
PARK & RIDE?
Redbridge Cycling is keen to hear your feedback on proposals to open
new cycle routes through Wanstead Park. Gill James and Haydn Powell
report on an often contentious subject
The last few months have been tough
for everyone, so it is good to have
silver linings. During lockdown,
Wanstead Park was a haven to those
wishing to get some fresh air and exercise.
Park wardens report a 122% rise in visitor
numbers.
For the climate crisis, the exponential growth
in the popularity of cycling has been another
real positive.
At present, a 1950s by-law restricts cycling
in the park to a 200m stretch from the
entrance at Wanstead Park Avenue up to the
tea hut, then bearing left along the northeastern
edge of the Heronry Pond. Cycling is
forbidden in all other parts of the park, but the
signposting is, at best, erratic.
The Friends of Wanstead Parklands Facebook
page witnessed some lively discussion,
including complaints about cyclists not
sticking to the sole designated route. Offline,
users have also reported more serious
incidents, including an altercation between
a cyclist and a dog walker, and bikes being
ridden in Chalet Wood, home to a notable
colony of bluebells, which are easily damaged
by trampling.
Since the park’s keepers began returning to
work, the by-laws have been more rigorously
enforced, notably around the Ornamental
Water, where cycling is off limits.
At a meeting in July, the Friends of Wanstead
Parklands committee members discussed
the possibilities of expanding cycling in
the park. The current situation is an area of
dissatisfaction for all parties. Cycling has
become a free-for-all, which is antagonising
some pedestrians. In contrast, government
and local council support for increased use of
bikes has stoked demand for improved cycle
routes through the park.
Proposed new path to
complete a circular route
The Friends of Wanstead Parklands committee
supported, in principle, the opening up
of a shared-use route between the gate at
Wanstead Park Avenue to the gate at Warren
Road. This would make a good general ‘artery’
route for crossing the park.
Other proposed shared routes which
Redbridge Cycling would like considered are:
• The wide path between the River Roding
and the Ornamental Water, connecting
Warren Road with an entry from the Ilford
side of the park. This route is good for family
cycling.
• A small section of pathway from the
southern tip of the Ornamental Lake to the
tea hut, north of Perch Pond. This would
complete a circular leisure cycle route,
which would be a tremendous benefit to
safe family cycling. Resurfacing would also
improve access for wheelchair users.
Redbridge Cycling wants to hear your views
on the concept of new cycling routes around
Wanstead Park.
Future for Whipps
In the fifth of a series of articles looking at the redevelopment of
Whipps Cross Hospital, Charlotte Monro reflects on a recent public
meeting and expresses concern over plans for 51 fewer beds
Work towards the new Whipps
Cross Hospital is advancing
apace with the architect team
in the process of being appointed. A
public meeting hosted by Waltham Forest
Save Our NHS (WFSONHS) at the end
of July demonstrated our communities’
determination that the new hospital must
be designed to meet our needs in the
future. Alarm that the latest plans are for
51 fewer beds than now – despite the area
having the fastest-growing population
in London – has led to the launch of a
community-wide campaign.
People found the meeting informative and
inspiring. Enthusiastic discussion followed
the three speakers. Residents spoke of the
reality on the ground: 8,000 more people
moving into new developments in Leabridge
ward, which is already 10 GPs short and has
no health centre. And housing for staff on the
Whipps site; public transport – sufficient and
green – and genuine consultation were all
raised. People are eager to act.
John Cryer MP spoke first: “We can’t be in
a position where we have got a nice new
hospital but it cannot cope with the demand.”
He has witnessed the “absolutely desperate”
pressure on Whipps. “The hospital has been
at 100% bed occupancy for the last two
winters. Once you get to 90%, you start to
compromise safety, you should not even go
near 100%.” Sufficient beds is a critical issue, of
which he has long experience, from the new
Queen’s Hospital in Romford to the closure of
Wanstead Hospital’s Heronwood and Galleon
unit “which provided excellent rehab… Now,
I am getting cases of people who cannot
get the services in their homes that were
promised when the wards closed. So, people
go back needing more intense hospital care.”
The idea the new hospital needs fewer beds
relies on assumptions that fewer people will
need hospital treatment because of proposed
new models of care in the community and
improved organisation of hospital care. A
close look at the strategy documents, said
the next speaker Mary Burnette of WFSONHS,
shows major flaws in the modelling used. For
one, Waltham Forest has less to spend on both
hospital and community health care than
most of the boroughs to which it is compared.
Decisions resting on untested assumptions
could give us the same pressures and
ambulance queues stretching into our future.
The final presentation from Green at Barts
Health staff group called for the new Whipps
to be the first UK net zero-carbon hospital,
designed for the wellbeing of all who use it.
With danger from climate change, anything
less would be unforgivable. Natural light,
views and ventilation, green spaces and
nature, renewable clean energy from solar
panels on roofs of both hospital and houses,
all this is doable. But our guarantee will be the
involvement throughout of community, staff
and patients. And funding!
Why can’t you see me?
Wanstead teenager Grace Wolstenholme invites you to watch her YouTube
channel for an insight into her life with cerebral palsy. In the second of
a series of articles, the aspiring actor talks about Chicken Shed Theatre
I’ve been acting from the age of seven
at Chicken Shed Theatre. I started in
children’s theatre and took part in some
Christmas shows, then I moved up to
youth theatre and took part in a few more
performances. My favourite show was Feel
The Love because it was about all kinds
of love and saying everyone’s equal, but
I especially enjoyed the nightclub scene
because I love a good party!
Chicken Shed changed my life. Before
joining, I hated leaving the house as I was
embarrassed for people to see me because I
was ‘different’. Every time my mum tried to get
me out of the house I would have a meltdown.
I actually remember her forcing me to sit in
my car seat to get me to my primary school,
and one day, I was so strong she couldn’t
physically get me in the car!
Then Chicken Shed called saying there was a
space for me. My mum was in shock because
she heard the waiting time can be up to
10 years. The reason I got in so quickly was
because my mum took me to the children’s
workshops on the weekends and they saw
how bad I was. They thought Chicken Shed
would really help build my confidence so they
invited me to a week called Summer Shed. I
remember kicking, hitting and biting my mum
when she was trying to get me into the room.
The lady in charge was expecting me, so when
she heard screaming and crying, she knew I
was there and came over. I even kicked her.
Then she introduced me to my one-to-one
and I went to the group, but I didn’t join in.
After a few months of going, I started getting
more confident. After a year, you couldn’t get
me away from Chicken Shed. I was enjoying it
so much. I was only seven, but from that age,
I knew I belonged and fitted in and I went to
Grace during one
of her perfomances
my primary school saying I was leaving and
going to school at Chicken Shed, but that
wasn’t true because it’s a college.
I went to a special needs secondary school,
which at the time was the best school,
but after two years of being there it really
changed. When I started, most people were
like me, physically disabled, not mentally
disabled. But that changed and most people
were mentally disabled, so again, I just wanted
to study at Chicken Shed. I was 14, so I still
couldn’t go, and it got to a point where I
wouldn’t go to school because I didn’t fit in.
Because my school was attached to a
mainstream school, I used to talk to the
‘mainstream’ pupils through the fence. Then
at the age of 15, I applied for Chicken Shed,
and one day after school I got home to a
letter saying I had an interview. My school
did everything they could to help because I
was quite naughty there, so the staff couldn’t
wait to get rid of me! Three months later, I got
another letter saying I got in. So, June last year
I left school and started college. I finally felt I
was getting somewhere in life.
THANKS A BUNCH!
Marian Temple offers her thanks to the diverse range of local businesses
which have all supported the work of the Wanstead Community
Gardeners – from watering to welding
Wanstead Community Gardeners
is a community group open to all
people of any skill level who are
interested in transforming Wanstead’s
neglected public spaces.
We’re a good mix of Wanstead people –
families with children, retired people and
nine-to-five workers – and we all play our
part in creating little patchwork gardens
in each neglected space. Some of us are
gardeners, some have the oomph to get rid of
unwelcome sycamores, shift heavy sacks, fix
up a trellis and all the extra stuff needed when
creating living gardens, while some know little
but want to be involved. But in addition to
this, there are our backroom boys and girls in
the form of local businesses that help us do
the work we do.
Time, I think, to hand out some gongs for all
those businesses who help us to function,
create and maintain our patches.
Our thanks to Maz at Heads ‘n Tails, the pet
shop, and to Daisy at the flower shop for
giving us their walking wounded. They get
planted around Wanstead and dance. Maz is
ever helpful lending us his drill and countless
other kindnesses.
Watering is a huge problem in these times
of heatwavery. We try to plant in a way to
minimise watering, but help from Little Bears
Nursery, who keep our water butt filled at
Wanstead Station, gives us the valuable water
we need for the George Green fountain beds
and those around the station. Kindred Nursery
provides water for the new, thriving Belgique
bed the other side of George Green.
This year, we have adopted two trees in the
High Street, the ones planted in metal grids
near Zoology, and decided to see if we could
grow sweet peas and morning glories up
the trunks. One tree was planted only this
winter. New trees are so vulnerable in their
first year before roots are spread and easily die
from lack of water. Our thanks to the nearby
Purbani restaurant for letting us use their tap.
The newly planted tree looks very sad. Maybe
we have lost it already, but the morning
glories are rampaging up the trunk, showing
off their piercing blue trumpets.
The McCartney garage in Grosvenor Road has
been enormously useful in all things metal,
straightening the bent tines of garden forks,
cutting through the thick metal grids needed
for climbers and much more difficult stuff.
Without all this backup, the task of keeping
Wanstead blooming would be much harder.
Our thanks to them all.
The Corner House garden has
been managed by the Wanstead
Community Gardeners since 2003
fed-uppery
The power of
The only reason Wanstead has its
cottage garden at the Corner House
is that someone got fed up. That
someone was me in April 2003. Just once
too often, I walked past the patch of waisthigh
weeds and takeaway rubbish bin the
garden had become. Something had to
be done. It was. Just me and my mates at
first, with the agreement of the council and
backup of the Wanstead Society. A garden
emerged that has been Wanstead’s iconic
High Street cottage garden for the past
17 years.
In 2017, Daniel Slipper got fed up with the
litter strewn over Wanstead’s greens and
open spaces. He did something about it. The
monthly litter picks were born and are now
continued by our local councillors. What a
difference that has made! How much better it
would be if the strewing didn’t happen in the
first place, but that’s another story.
In April this year, in the middle of a heatwave
that has been waving for most of this summer,
Peta Jarmey, one of our community gardeners,
got fed up with walking past a derelict patch
of weeds and rubbish that could have been a
delightful flower bed. Déjà vu? Certainly.
The patch in question is the one pictured here
– a long bed, 20 metres or so, that runs along
the footpath connecting Cambridge Park with
the roads that were cut off when the new road
was put into a tunnel under George Green. It’s
the Belgique end of the green and is backed
When Wanstead residents get fed up with something unsightly
in their neighbourhood, they do something about it. It’s the
power of fed-uppery, as Marian Temple knows only too well.
by a rather handsome wall beneath which the
traffic plunges into the tunnel.
Transport for London built the road, the
tunnel, the wall and the flower bed. They
forgot to do anything with the flower bed,
and for the past 20-odd years, footpath
users have walked past a strip of weeds and
rubbish. Enter thoroughly fed-up Wanstead
Community Gardener Peta, who walked past
this dismal patch just once too often. The
power of fed-uppery kicked in.
A hot April is not an ideal time to create a new
flower bed, especially where there is no source
of water. However, you can’t keep a good
gardener down. Litter and weeds out, soil dug
over, easy-going plants put in from Peta’s own
garden, the Corner House garden and those
of various locals who left their donations on
the patch. Against all the odds, the new plants
thrived, watered by a pocket army of wellwishers
who brought water in plastic bottles
at the end of each hot day. They wanted this
patch of flowers to do well… and it did.
It doesn’t take very long to create a garden. In
less than three months, the Belgique bed was
up and running. Thanks to the nearby Kindred
Nursery we now have a source of water. Goodtempered
plants are flowering and golden
hop scrambling up the wall. There are a few
empty spaces. They will be filled. Welcome to
Wanstead’s latest perennial border.
Let’s drink a toast to the power of fed-uppery.
Life in Lockdown
Kareem Cole from local solicitors Wiseman Lee takes a look at the
importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney and planning for life in
lockdown, especially for those who are more vulnerable
The unpredictability of the coronavirus
pandemic has prompted many people
to ensure their wills are up to date
should they suddenly become unwell. But
who would you want to help manage your
finances or make decisions about your
personal health or affairs if you were forced
back into lockdown or lost capacity?
Most likely, you would want your family or
friends to make these decisions for you. A fully
registered Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) will
allow the people of your choice to assist you
should you become unable to leave the house
or manage by yourself.
There is no automatic right for your next of kin
to act on your behalf.
There are two types of LPA. One covers your
property and financial matters (use this
LPA to give an attorney the power to make
decisions about selling your home, collecting
benefits or a pension and paying bills, for
example), whilst the other covers your health
and welfare decisions (use this LPA to give an
attorney the power to make decisions about
your daily routine, medical care, moving into
a care home and life-sustaining treatment, for
example). You can choose to make one type
or both.
Life during lockdown has been very difficult
for many, especially those who are more
vulnerable or are shielding. Issues people are
facing include not being able to go to the
shops, the bank, or have family members visit
who would usually help.
Having an LPA in place means your attorneys
can assist as necessary whilst you have
capacity and then fully manage your finances
should you lose capacity. They can also
arrange medical appointments for you, put in
place extra care, assist with paying bills and
access cash for general household expenses.
With the possibility of more restrictions being
placed on our lives in the future, Lasting
Powers of Attorney could prove very useful.
Whereas a will is effective from the day it is
signed, an LPA is only effective after it has
been successfully registered. The registration
process can take up to four months.
If you do not have an LPA, your next of
kin would need to apply to the Court of
Protection to become your Deputy. This is a
costly process that can take up to nine months
to be resolved.
The importance of ensuring you are properly
safeguarded if you were to suddenly lose
capacity cannot be underestimated.
WARD OFF CRIME
Ward Panels in Wanstead and South Woodford are keen to welcome a
wider diversity of members from their respective communities to help
support neighbourhood policing. Elaine Atkins reports
At the end of July, Redbridge residents
were invited to attend a live webinar
hosted by the Leader of Redbridge
Council, Councillor Jas Athwal, and the
Borough Commander, Stephen Clayman.
The importance of the partnership between
the police and the council in tackling crime
and antisocial behaviour was highlighted –
but so too was the vital role of the general
public in being the local ‘eyes and ears’ for
reporting issues.
Across the Metropolitan Police Service
(MPS), each ward has a dedicated Safer
Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) – a team of
MPS officers who work closely with our
communities to be able to establish local
policing priorities and keep us safe. The wider
area of ‘South Woodford’ covers both the
Churchfields and South Woodford wards,
while ‘Wanstead’ includes the Wanstead
Village and Wanstead Park wards. Each ward
has its own SNT, with three Dedicated Ward
Officers, consisting of two Constables and
a Police Community Support Officer – all
supervised by a Sergeant and an Inspector.
Each ward has its own Ward Panel drawn from
those who live, work or learn in the ward.
The panel sets out to represent the whole
community, including residents’ associations,
faith groups, schools, businesses and
community groups, to be able to engage with
the SNT. Problem solving is at the heart of all
neighbourhood policing, and engagement
with the community helps to provide longterm
solutions to reduce crime and antisocial
behaviour. The aim is for the diversity within
each panel to represent the diversity within
each ward, to be able to give everybody a say
in deciding local policing priorities that affect
us all. This can be a challenge, however, and
Officers from Wanstead SNT
attracting panel members from all age groups,
genders, faiths and cultures isn’t easy.
Our Ward Panels normally meet four times
a year. Our SNT officers attend as observers
– bringing data on crime and general
information – as do ward councillors,
Neighbourhood Watch ward coordinators
and officers from Redbridge. Residents and
community representatives are often invited
to observe the work of the panel, especially if
they are considering becoming a member.
At each Ward Panel meeting, opinions and
concerns are expressed by the community
through the panel members and the sectors
they represent. Crime statistics and police
reports are considered for the panel to be able
to agree on a priority for their SNT, which is
reviewed at the next meeting.
We are encouraging people from all cultures,
faiths, genders and age groups to learn more
about the panels and, hopefully to join us in
shaping the local area. There are varying levels
of involvement available, with the Wanstead
Park panel currently seeking a new chair.
Wanstead Village Directory
open to ideas
As Wanstead Parish churches prepare to take part in a COVID-secure
Open House weekend, Penelope Garlick invites you to share memories of
Christ Church and St Mary’s, and to submit your ideas for their future
In July, we announced a £72,500 National
Lottery Heritage Fund grant awarded
to Wanstead Parish to plan how both St
Mary’s and Christ Church can better serve
the wider community. This month, an
architect-led team will join the Heritage
consultant supporting the parish with the
project.
Consultation with groups and residents in
and around the parish is now beginning to
better understand what people value about
the churches, what they’d like to see more
of and how the churches can serve their
community. This will inform a series of options
for making the buildings and churchyards
more accessible. The project will also seek
to find how the parish can reduce their
negative environmental impact and enhance
environmental benefits in the buildings and
through their work.
St Mary’s was built in 1790 and is a fine
example of Georgian architecture; it’s also
the only Grade I listed building in Redbridge.
With the railway coming to Wanstead, Christ
Church was built in 1861 to provide a church
nearer to the new centre and received a grant
of £250 from the Incorporated Society for the
Building of Churches to provide free seating
for 200 adults and 70 children.
Now the buildings have reopened after
lockdown, we would like to hear what these
churches mean to you. Do you remember a
special day, maybe a wedding or a christening,
or even a funeral? Do you have ancestors
buried in the churchyard? Did you come to a
flower festival, a concert or to watch your child
in a nativity play? Is your memory of coming
to a church school leaving service? Maybe you
have come to the toddler group, a fair or just
enjoyed the quiet of the church grounds.
Please share your memories with us via
photos, words or video clips. We will include
as many as possible in a small exhibition we
are planning for Open House London this
September at both churches.
This year, Open House London is taking place
on 19 and 20 September. Both churches will
be open, but to meet current requirements,
visitor numbers will be limited and a one-way
system will operate around the venues. Please
book if you would like to come along.
The parish is also asking readers to feed back
their ideas for how the buildings might be
used in future as part of the first phase of
community consultation. The findings will be
shared with the architects to help shape their
initial ideas for plans as mentioned above.
To take part in the consultation on the
future use of the church buildings, visit
Christ Church will be open from 10am
to 4pm on 19 and 20 September.
St Mary’s will be open from 11am to
I
spent lockdown tackling my garden
shed and transforming it. I have
wanted to do this project for over 20
years and it took a global pandemic
to create the time and space to sort it,
but it was worth the wait.
It was inspired by my love of Polish
folk art and the charming, traditionally
painted cottages I saw in a village in
Poland.
Wanstead Village Directory
I am based in Forest Gate and consider
myself very lucky not only to have the
beautiful Wanstead Park around the
corner, where I enjoy my daily walks
with my terrier Mishio, but also to have
a garden. Not a luxury everyone had
during lockdown.
The gift of lockdown for me was that I had
no distractions and was therefore able to
relax. This, in turn, helped my creativity. Most
importantly, the good weather allowed me to
spend most of my time outdoors.
With time to think, I started to imagine how
my environment could be a fun space to
live in. Starting with the shed, an eyesore for
many years!
I did some research, prepared sketches, took
measurements and made a plan. Luckily, B&Q
had just reopened so I bought shed paint and
a set of Nova Acrylics from Amazon, which are
suitable for outdoor surfaces.
It was a liberating experience painting those
flowers and on a large scale. It was also
exciting, partly because it felt forbidden, in the
way we were not allowed to paint on walls as
children.
Because I have enjoyed this project so
much, my hope is that this will lead to a few
commissions in the future, however small or
large. I would be happy to take on anything
from garden and allotment sheds, beach huts
and compost bins to furniture. In whatever
style or design desired.
I am a ceramic artist and a ceramics tutor
by profession. My work is also inspired by
Jola’s garden shed was inspired by
her love of Polish folk art
colourful folk art, amongst other things,
and I primarily make creatures which have a
humorous and quirky quality to them.
I usually exhibit in galleries and craft fairs and
have shown my work a couple of times in Art
Trail Wanstead and had a feature previously in
the Wanstead Village Directory.
The shed – or shrine as I now call it – houses
all my ceramic work, materials and tools.
I would like to think that I may have inspired
others to feel adventurous to pick up their
brush and have a go at painting something in
their garden or home.
I surprised myself, and now I have made a
start, I feel undaunted by my plans to continue
to transform the rest of my house and garden.
The stairs are next!
Incidentally, that cat flap was somebody else’s
bright idea for my cat to live in the shed! It was
never used, and because it annoys me, I may
have to paint a cat on it one day.
Listen up & learn
In March, lockdown forced The Music School on the High Street to
close for the first time in 18 years. As the school prepares to reopen,
Liliana Dimovska explains why children and adults alike should listen up
The interruption that lockdown
brought prompted us to reflect on the
values and benefits of participating in
music activities and why it is so important
now, more than ever, to offer highquality
music education to the Wanstead
community. As an experienced music
performer and educator, I am thrilled to be
introducing, for the first time, an Early Years
programme based on the colourstrings
method, as well as well structured courses
for adults, starting this month.
The colourstrings approach is a unique
general musicianship education for children
from birth to five years and provides a
foundation for future musical training.
The classes have a relaxing and positive
atmosphere that encourages creativity,
listening and active participation. Hungarian
violinist Géza Szilvay developed the
colourstrings method in Finland in the
1970s after finding the need to help his own
children through the early, challenging years
of playing. He wanted to make the learning
process more joyful, more natural.
When children are five, they are ready to
start learning to play a musical instrument.
The colourstrings programme provides them
with a fun and engaging introduction to the
violin using nursery rhymes they love and
vibrant, colourful visual representation. As all
children learn in their own way, lessons can
be taken on an individual, paired, or smallgroup
basis. Individual lessons are good for
those who want one-on-one tuition, and
paired and small-group lessons are good for
social interaction and learning to listen to
other players.
But children are not the only ones who benefit
from musical activities. Adults can make
new social connections when they learn an
instrument. Maybe you learnt to play as a child
and want to brush up old skills, or you wish
you had learnt, but never had a chance. It is
never too late. Research shows the benefits of
participating in music as it relates to physical,
mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
Music lessons have been shown to improve
memory in a study of adults between the ages
of 60 and 85 (Jennifer Bugos, University of
South Florida), and it can also reduce anxiety,
depression and loneliness.
During lockdown, we all had to learn and
adapt to a new way of online learning. Our
experience was so positive that we will
continue to offer a full online programme for
those who are shielding but still want access
to lessons. On the other hand, for those who
prefer face-to-face tuition, we plan to re-open
on 7 September with all necessary safety steps
in place in line with government regulations.
in Birmingham and continued painting,
drawing and exhibiting work with the
financial assistance of West Midlands Arts.
By the end of my twenties, the urge to travel
was strong and I spent most of the next 10
years overseas in the Far East, Asia and Latin
America.
When I returned to Britain, I was eager to
resume my involvement in drawing and
painting and decided to attend life drawing
classes. The life room has provided me with
Over the past three years, I’ve produced
three books which narrate stories pictorially.
Not Countin’ Mexicans is a biography of the
brief but eventful life of Billy the Kid. Every
Day is a Good Day is a biography of the long
and bemused life of Hotei San. And John
Barleycorn is a folk song which deals with the
personification of the crop and an allegory of
Christ’s passion.
Another aspect of my work deals with walking
and the environment in which the walker
finds himself. Some years ago, I produced
an extensive sequence of drawings entitled
Underneath the Arches, which concerns
itself with the London churches of Nicholas
Hawksmoor, their genii loci and the linear
space between them. More recently, I’ve
been working on other themes relating to
walks and treks I’ve made both at home and
abroad. Over the years, I’ve made many treks
in the Nepal Himalaya, and on the last two, I
took a drawing book to supplement my usual
photographic endeavours. With the aid of
With Art Trail Wanstead taking a year off,
we invited local artist Christopher Thomas to
present one of his paintings here instead
memory, drawings and photographs, I’ve been
making paintings of Himalayan landscapes.
In tandem with this, I’ve also been making
paintings of Wiltshire’s neolithic landscape.
There are many influences on my work. It
often has a basis or a correspondence in
literature, myth, the Bible and folk song. I
spend a great deal of time looking at and
copying from the Old Masters in order to gain
insights into formal problem solving.
SWEET HISTORY
When Darrell Toakley resurrected the name of ‘Truffles’ to add to his
travel agency in the High Street – which now sells chocolates as well as
holidays – he asked Dr Colin Runeckles to look into the building’s history
Wanstead residents will remember
the demolition and reconstruction
of the building that comprises
46-48 High Street a decade ago (The Closet
and Truffles). The original building can
be seen on the tithe map of 1841, where
the index shows the owner to be Thomas
Barker but the occupant as Miss Ann Slater.
We can be certain about who ran the shop
and what trade they were in between 1900
and 1955 from Kelly’s Directories – successively
watchmaker, china and glass dealer (1900),
watchmaker (1903–12), plumber (1914–15) and
finally, tailor (1923–1955 and possibly later).
Edward Perry had the shop the longest, from
1923 to at least 1955, although a different tailor
is listed in the 1939 register – a sign Perry
served in the forces during World War Two
perhaps?
The contextual position of the shops is
important in understanding them. Before the
expansion of the High Street further towards
Snaresbrook from the 1860s onwards, the
village was concentrated around the area
from The George with the 18th-century manor
houses to the north and across the road
towards Woodbine Place. Numbers 46-48 High
Street had an alleyway on either side leading
to Woodbine Place – the one on the south side
next to 48 was Slater’s Alley, the one to the
north next to 46 was Dark Alley. Slater’s Alley
disappeared with the building of flats that
make up 50 High Street.
But what was at the rear of these shops was,
if anything, more interesting than the shops
themselves. Going by an 1860s Ordnance
Survey map, there were originally 12 small
cottages behind the shops in a terrace that
went to Woodbine Place. Census returns of the
1800s record some being in Slater’s Alley (the
46-48 High Street,
Wanstead
ones closest to the High Street shops), while
the remainder are in Dark Alley – although this
is sometimes Long Alley or Brooks Alley. From
this difference in location, I’m left wondering
whether some had their front doors facing
one way towards the south and Slater’s Alley,
and others to the north and Dark Alley. Over
a period of time, the numbers of cottages
behind the shops gradually reduced down to
five in Slater’s Alley in the 1950s. There was a
sixth, but this was opposite the long terrace
on the south side of Slater’s Alley.
The people who lived in these were, like those
in Wanstead’s cottages, mainly labourers,
gardeners, stockmen, carpenters – in short,
the working-class men and women of
Wanstead. But look in the tithe index of 1841 at
those living in the cottages nearest Woodbine
Place and you’ll find not occupants’ names but
instead “Paupers etc”, probably in receipt of
relief under English Poor Laws.
I don’t know when the cottages in Slater’s
Alley were finally demolished. Do any readers
remember them being there?
A New Era
Vintage trader Karen Stuckey took over the running of Wanstead Vintage
fairs earlier this year. Although her first event in May was a victim of
lockdown, the new Wanstead Vintage era starts now
Hasn’t lockdown been so difficult for
everyone? What would have been my
first Wanstead Vintage event in May,
after taking over the fairs at the beginning
of the year, had to be cancelled due to the
current pandemic. However, I am delighted
to say we will finally be open for business
again this month. It is a really exciting year
for us as it is our 10th anniversary as well.
I first became interested in vintage over 10
years ago. I had just come out of the City after
working as a training manager for JP Morgan
for 15 years. I wanted a change of career, away
from the corporate world. Whilst walking
around Loughton, I came across Boningtons,
the auctioneers. I went to their next viewing
and auction and found it really exciting, so the
following day I took my CV into their offices.
My timing was perfect and I started as office
manager the following week!
I worked at Boningtons for five years and
learnt so much. I will always remember doing
the internet bidding on one particular lot
which achieved just shy of £30,000! It was
so exciting, the room erupted with applause
when the hammer went down.
Working in an auction house really piqued
my interest in vintage items and I started
buying and selling myself. Of course, I got to
the stage where I was running out of room
at home as I was buying far more than I was
selling, so I decided to attend vintage fairs. I
now also have a space where I sell at Crews
Hill Vintage Emporium in Enfield. This is rather
nice because it gives me a base and has meant
I have met more fellow traders.
It is now more important than ever to repair,
reuse and recycle. The damage we have
already inflicted on the planet is obvious to
see and we can’t wait any longer to address
it. Buying pre-loved is the way forward. It has
all the excitement of a new purchase with
the added bonus of helping the planet and
knowing you’re recycling.
I was delighted to take over Wanstead Vintage
this year – it was the perfect fit for me. I knew
a number of the regular stallholders and
my best asset is organising. We are really
fortunate to hold these fairs in Wanstead
United Reformed Church, a beautiful Grade II
listed, recently refurbished building, which
is incredibly light and airy with the sun
streaming through the huge colourful stained
glass windows. The church has two halls,
which we fill with an array of stallholders,
some of whom have been with us since 2010.
They will be selling, as they always do, a huge
variety of genuine vintage items: homewares,
jewellery, handbags, posters, textiles, vinyl
and books to name a few – everything you
need for your home and wardrobe.
The Wanstead Vintage fair takes place at
Wanstead United Reformed Church on
5 September from 10.30am to 4.30pm
(entry: £2.50). For more information, visit
Wanstead Village Directory
What will Wanstead look like in a post-COVID-19 world? In the fourth
of a series of articles, Chair of Wanstead Society Scott Wilding, who is
exploring these issues as part of his job, offers his thoughts
By September, a new normal will
have set in. We are all used to social
distancing, waiting to get into shops,
wearing masks and so on. These have
become part of everyday life. With the
onset of autumn, we begin to take more
steps to life as usual, with pupils returning
to school.
However, the Chief Medical Officer for England
announced in August that we have come to
the limits of what we can safely do to open
up society. Until, or unless, a vaccine is found
for COVID, social distancing is here to stay. So,
what does it mean for us?
The death of the commute? Well, possibly for
some. At the time of writing, about 55% of
people had visited their workplace compared
to January, and many service sector jobs
doubt if they will return to large Londonbased
offices before January, or at all.
Even if those of us who work in offices do
return, it will be very different. Only two
people in a lift at any time. Buildings operating
at about 30% capacity. Working at home two
to three days a week a necessity. This means a
very different look and feel to how we live our
life. For instance, visits to parks have increased
by around 100%. A fairly obvious statistic as
this article is written in summer, but as gyms
and health centres have been closed – and
many people are working from home – the
park has become the new exercise space. This
is likely to become a more long-term trend as
the benefits of outside exercise have reached
more people during lockdown.
Our overall travel patterns have also changed.
TfL estimates that weekday Tube travel is
down by about 70%, although weekend travel
patterns are increasing. So, we are either
travelling less in general or doing more by
car. Although general traffic has increased
since lockdown was eased, it’s not up to
pre-lockdown levels. Freight traffic is about
15% down on March and general traffic is
down about 10%. This may be a general trend
towards less car use. A possibility supported
by the fact that cycling is up 146% in England
to July.
Apart from more cycling, the other good
thing about lockdown, which we seem to
be keeping, at least for now, is improved
air quality. Since March, nitrogen dioxide
pollution is down significantly on 2019 levels.
It’s unclear as we approach winter if this will
continue, but with less road traffic and fewer
flights, it’s possible London is heading for one
of the cleanest years in terms of air quality.
Lockdown and COVID represent real
challenges, but an old Chinese proverb claims
that in every crisis is an opportunity. Perhaps
our opportunity is the ability to move away
from four wheels to two, and to keep the
benefits of cleaner air we have so far enjoyed.
Ou retail shops in East London and Essex
have established a loyal following for our
great-tasting, great-value pie and mash.
We are also very proud suppliers of to Asda,
Nisa and Budgen stores as well as local pubs,
cafes and sporting venues. We also keep the
ex-pat community satisfied through Iceland
supermarkets in mainland Spain, the Canary
Islands and more recently Cyprus.
P ie and mash goes back
the 19th century, when
Dutch ships delivered live ee
to Bi lingsgate Market. Before
the fish market was founded,
the ships sailed up the Thame
to Ludgate Street, where their
goods were sold on the quaysid
The parsley liquor was brought
with them, therefore the liquor
from the very beginning was an
accompaniment with the eels. It
is also just as delicious with any
fish, as we l as pie and mash.
In the beginning, the pies were
fi led with eels. Nowadays, we are
to proud to say all our pies are
handmade, and fi led with 100%
Scotch beef and delicious gravy.
Wanstead needs you!
The Wanstead Society is a group of volunteers dedicated to protecting and enhancing one of the most
picturesque parts of London. We champion the conservation of our area’s heritage, and work to promote
Wanstead and neighbouring Snaresbrook wherever possible.
The Wanstead Society is a non-political organisation seeking to help our area by building constructive
working relationships with those in power.
Our main aims are to:
• Work with the Council and planners to protect and enhance the character of Wanstead
Wanstead is a lovely
neighbourhood –
• Encourage, support and promote the viability of the High Street and the
local community
• Take part in the Wanstead Festival and care for the Corner House Garden
• Liaise with and lobby Councillors, GLA Members and MPs
• Support local businesses
but it’s constantly
Whilst we have no statutory power, we have a voice. And the more members we
have, the louder that voice will be. That’s why we need you to join us.
under threat from
poor planning and
The Wanstead Society
government cutbacks. Help us
speak up for Wanstead.
We currently have over 600 households in our membership –
why not add your name to the list?
Yes, I want to join The Wanstead Society and I enclose a cheque for the annual membership of £10 per household payable to The
Wanstead Society.
The more members we have, the
louder our voice becomes.
