KANSAS CITY, MO. (February 29, 2008) – The Lyric Opera of Kansas City presents a
the Lyric Theatre as a part of the Company’s 50 th Anniversary Season.
One of the most famous of Mozart’s operas, The Magic Flute, is a fantastical and delightful
fairy tale of good versus evil that is highly enjoyable to children and adults alike. In the
opera, Prince Tamino and the zany bird-catcher Papageno are sent by the Queen of the
Night and her Three Ladies to rescue her daughter, Pamina, from the clutches of Sarastro,
whom the Queen claims is the leader of an evil kingdom. Tamino and Papageno are given a
magic flute and bells, respectively, to ward off evil spirits and protect them from danger.
Their ensuing journey, escorted by three young boys, finds the two heroes engaging in
challenging trials while in the midst of a kingdom full of dragons and wild animals. As in all
fairy tales, good triumphs in the end, Tamino wins Pamina and Papageno finds a Papagena
of his very own.
The Magic Flute will feature seven principals making their Lyric Debut: Jonathan
Boyd as Tamino, Matthew Worth as Papageno, Lorraine Earnest as the Queen of the Night,
Maureen McKay as Pamina, Craig Hart as Sarastro, Angie Solomon as Papagena, and Sharon
Campbell as 3 rd Lady.
performances across the globe and was hailed by Opera News as a "standout" with "a
plangent, refined yet muscular voice" capable of "some ravishing mezza voce singing" at
Sarasota Opera. Mr. Boyd has recently made debuts as Tamino in The Magic Flute with both
Festival Lyrique-en-mer de Belle Île (France) and Portland Opera. He has appeared at
