Magic of kitchen science
Southbrook School children enjoyed a
little ‘‘kitchen chemistry’’ last week.
Agroup of pupils got to try some
science experiments during the
school’s science day on Friday.
The experiments were led by
teacher Katie Owens, who used to
teach secondary school science. She
sought to inspire pupils and get ‘‘their
science minds working’’.
Pupils tried their hand at ‘‘milk
magic’’, using food colouring and
detergent to separate fat in milk,
making sherbet and ‘‘unicorn
noodles’’, using the pigment in red
cabbage to change the colour of
noodles in boiling water.
Younger pupils got to make
‘‘exploding volcanoes’’ using lemons,
baking soda and vinegar.
‘‘It’s really simple things which they
can go home and do, and show mum
and dad,’’ Katie says.
‘‘Sometimes you don’t get alot of
feedback from them, but when you see
it in their faces, you know that they’re
engaged.’’
The school is aiming to hold the
science days once aterm, with
different pupils getting aturn.
