Shared Governance: Involvement in the campus governance allows one to professionally interact and<br />

maintain open lines of communication with others on campus. In addition, information and recommendations<br />

are provided to the decision-makers of <strong>UMBC</strong> to recognize contributions, facilitate ways to excel, and respect<br />

Collective Bargaining: A method of mutually determining wages, hours and terms and conditions of<br />

employment through negotiations between representatives of the employer and the union. The results of the<br />

Meet and Network with Employers in Your Industry: Stop by to meet and network with employers<br />

targeting <strong>UMBC</strong> students at the job fairs hosted by CSC throughout the year.


Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture<br />

CADVC (Gallery, 1st floor Fine Arts): Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to participate in<br />

making the Center a welcome place for the campus community by acting as ambassadors at opening<br />

receptions and educational events or by lecturing in the galleries on areas of expertise related to our<br />

exhibitions. Additional opportunities include participating in our K-14 educational outreach programs-both<br />

on site, as gallery teachers/lecturers, and in classrooms at area schools. Opportunities<br />

occasionally arise for those with special skills who are interested in working hands-on with the artwork<br />

Joseph Beuys Sculpture Park (oak grove with stones on south campus): Faculty, staff, and<br />

students who care about nature, sustainability practices, and green initiatives on campus are<br />

encouraged to participate in program planning for the Joseph Beuys Sculpture Park. The Park<br />

features 30 oak trees partnered with large stones in a grove on the south side of campus. We<br />

welcome your ideas and assistance in planning projects promoting and using this unique campus<br />

English Language Institute<br />

Help International Students! ELI Conversation Partner Program pairs an international student with a<br />

U.S. partner for weekly conversation and cultural exchange. Need one hour per week for casual<br />

Graduate School<br />

Graduate School Commencement: Greeters and Ushers are needed for the December and May graduate<br />

commencement ceremonies. Greeters assist our guests by directing them to the arena, assisting special<br />

accommodation guests, and answering any and all questions posed by our guests. Ushers distribute programs<br />

Human Resources<br />

Employee of the Quarter Selection Committee: Committee members are responsible for promoting the<br />

Employee of the Quarter (EOQ) Program, soliciting nominations, reviewing nominations, and selecting award<br />

Institutional Advancement<br />

Faculty/Staff Campaign: The most important way you can support <strong>UMBC</strong>'s Faculty Staff Campaign is<br />

through a gift to the University and by speaking to students, colleagues and coworkers about the importance of<br />

giving back. You can also support the campaign by volunteering to serve as a signatory for one of our<br />

Maryland Charity Campaign: Support others in the community by contributing to the Maryland Charity<br />

Undergraduate Commencement: Held every December and May, a variety of volunteers are needed such<br />

as setting up banners, greeting and ushering guests, assisting those with special accommodations, lining up<br />

Community Service Projects and Service Learning<br />

Intern, co-op, or research positions: Provide referrals to positions or post your own on-campus<br />

research/intern opportunities.<br />

Advise students to utilize The Shriver Center to help them get placed in an applied learning opportunity<br />

(internship, co-op, research, service-learning).<br />

Invite Shriver Center Staff to present in your class regarding various opportunities and resources.<br />

Develop a service-learning course and provide your students with hands-on learning opportunities. Shriver<br />

Center Staff would identify appropriate community partners and navigate the process of building in this<br />

additional component (schedule, transportation, etc.).<br />

Present to a group of K-12 students about your area of expertise/research. An example of <strong>UMBC</strong> faculty<br />

and staff participation is through a summer enrichment experience with two local Baltimore City Schools called<br />

“Learning Through Experience.”<br />

Off-Campus Student Services Commuter Retreat: Held every August on "Move In Day" for new<br />

commuters to have an intensive bonding experience while new residents are moving in. Facilitators work with<br />

groups of 15-20 commuter students as they complete team building and low ropes activities.<br />

Good Neighbors Program: Collection drives held twice a year in Fall and Spring. In October, we collect<br />

toiletries and blankets for local families that are distributed through Southwest Emergency Services. In April<br />

Student Judicial Programs<br />

Student Judicial Programs: The Code of Student Conduct requires that Hearing Boards, which consider<br />

cases where students are contesting the allegations filed against them, and Appellate Boards, which consider<br />

appeals of conduct cases on specific grounds, must have a faculty/staff representative. Faculty and staff are<br />

encouraged to contact the office if they would like to be considered for service on a hearing or appeal<br />

alongside student justices who are highly trained paraprofessionals. Hearings and appellate boards are<br />

convened weekly during the fall and spring semesters, most often on Fridays.<br />

Undergraduate Admissions<br />

Visit Days: Open House programs for prospective freshmen (high school juniors and seniors) and<br />

transfers. They include class visits, workshops and tours as well as an opportunity for conversation with<br />

Just for Juniors: High school juniors (and sophomores) and their families are on campus for a firstimpression<br />

program consisting of a welcoming assembly, tours, and the opportunity to meet representatives of<br />

each academic and service department.<br />

New Student Day: Offers a full day of activities that provide an opportunity to celebrate and welcome all<br />

admitted students. Activities include special interest tours, a campus activity fair, and service department open<br />

houses.<br />

Welcoming Receptions: Admitted students and academically talented high school juniors from selected<br />

geographic areas are invited to off-campus Welcoming Receptions co-hosted by the Alumni Association.<br />

Orientation Course Selection Day: Welcome new students to the campus through a day-long event designed<br />

to provide the students with the opportunity to meet current and new <strong>UMBC</strong> students, faculty and staff.<br />

Undergraduate Education<br />

Instructors for Introduction to an Honors University (IHU): Students have the opportunity to improve their<br />

writing, test taking, and time management skills by working with staff and faculty who are committed to student<br />

Instructors for Learning Resources Center classes (LRC): LRC courses help students make the transition to<br />

college whether they are a freshman or transfer student. It will expose students to a variety of self-management


and study techniques that can be applied to current and future courses. Instructors are selected based on their<br />

Women’s Center<br />

<strong>UMBC</strong> Women’s Center: Faculty and staff are encouraged to engage in the Women's Center community by<br />
