Welcome to ArtEvents New Mexico

& Studio Tour Guide 2018-2019

What’s new in this edition ?

The Artists Studio Tour is something of a phenomenon in New

Mexico. For nearly forty years (the Dixon Studio Tour celebrates

their 37th anniversary this year) artists across the state

have banded together in local groups to share their art with visitors

on a designated weekend or weekends each year. Beyond

the artists’ studio tours, art events in New Mexico have been in

place for nearly a century. The Santa Fe Indian Market began in

1922, and they celebrate their 97th anniversary this year. Also

that year, in Gallup, New Mexico, the Gallup InterTribal Ceremonial

began.

For many native artists their artwork is an expression of who

they are as a people and their relationship to the earth and its

surroundings. The same is certainly true with New Mexico artists

of every background and description: an innate love of the

land, the sky, the beauty and the serenity which we all enjoy in

the Land of Enchantment. The tours and events that we present

in this Guide are representative of the richness which all New

Mexico artists offer for your enjoyment.

We began our journey with this publication in 2014 as a simple,

comprehensive guide to the Artists’ Studio Tours in New

Mexico. Today we have blended this guide into an even more

comprehensive look at the plethora of art-related events (and

other cultural interests) that take place each year in New Mexico.

We hope you are able to use and enjoy the information in this

Guide and we wish you happy trails as you explore New Mexico

on your next Art Adventure.

Discover YOUR New Mexico

by Marc-Paul LaRouche

Cultural tourism in New Mexico has a long history. As early

as 1922 a small business in Albuquerque, Koshare Tours,

was started by Erna Fergusson, the “First Lady of New Mexico

Letters”. Koshare Tours motored guests throughout the

desert Southwest introducing them to native cultures and

providing them with all the amenities and conveniences of

modern life. Impressed with Fergusson’s success, the famed

western hotel and restaurateur Fred Harvey bought Koshare

Tours and hired Fergusson to direct the new venture—”Indian

Detour Service”. Fast forward to today’s offerings where

companies such as Southwest Detours (based in Las Vegas,

New Mexico) and Cultural Treasures, based in Santa Fe, New

Mexico continue to take tour groups to cultural and art destinations

across the core of New Mexico, from Santa Fe to Taos

to Las Vegas, New Mexico.

It is our hope that with efforts such as those put forward by

Kathy Hendrickson of Southwest Detours, Robbie O’Neill of

Cultural Treasures, and others across the state, we will soon

see a rise in “Art Tourism” as well. The very fact that over

1,000 artists participate in annual studio tours, as well as the

myriad of other art events taking place each and every week

through the warm weather months, indicates the possibility

to expand the services offered to visitors from acrosss the state

and around the world.

In order to facilitate this opportunity we are inviting other

tour guides and operators to consider expanding their offerings

to accomodate visitors across the state by visiting art

events and planning weekend getaways. While the main population

of New Mexico is centered around Albuquerque and

Santa Fe, this is by no means the extent of the reach of art in

the state. Northern New Mexico boasts a rich history of art

and artists as far north as Rio Costilla (on the New Mexico

- Colorado border). Deming, New Mexico, practically on

the Mexico border, also offers art opportunities in their community.

Everywhere you look in New Mexico you will find

art being made and those who savor the adventure of finding

that next great piece of artwork while enjoying our diverse

landscape and people.

You are cordially invited to Discover Your New Mexico in

any way that fits your needs. Please drop us a line with your

(client testimonial)

Your cultural tour was the highlight of our vacation

week in Santa Fe and Taos; it was everything that we

had hoped for and more. How fortuitous that I discovered

you and Santa Fe Cultural Tours! I wanted a unique and

special adventure and I found just that. Your enthusiasm

for educating others about the culture in the Santa Fe area

is addictive. I could sense your warmth, humor, and passion

when we first talked by phone and arranged the tour. You

are FUN, as well as knowledgeable, and you were the perfect

tour guide for us! We certainly hope that our paths cross

again.” Patrice, Paul, and Christopher Phelps, Atlanta, GA

“New Adventures Down Old

Trails!” is the Motto for Las Vegas,

NM. With more than 900

buildings on the National Register

of Historic Places, you cannot

help feeling you are back in the wild west. History is

woven into the fabric of this railroad era town, from its

Old Town Plaza to the train depot and the soon-to-be

restored Castañeda Hotel. The story behind the making

of Las Vegas today, is intriguing, surprising, and entertaining.

Carrizozo Artists’ Studio Tour 2018

The 2018 Carrizozo Artists Studio Tour will hold their annual

art tour on Friday and Saturday, August 18 & 19, 2018.

The tour opens the courtyards and homes of some of the

most private professional and aspiring creatives in the state.

Works vary from illustration to pottery to woven copper

to tile, raku, sculpture and sewing, porcelain and painting.

What binds them are the colors, light, forms and quirkiness

particular to this remote place. carrizozoworks.org

Images are representative of artwork on this tour

The Questa Studio Arts Tour will be the first of the tours in

northern New Mexico. August 18 & 19 mark the weekend that

more than 30 artists and craftspeople will be available at their

studios, at one of a number of art hubs (6-8 artists at one location)

or in an art destination, to show their work. Questa is

unique in that there exists both traditional and contemporary

artworks made by both members of older families and newly

transplanted artists. This is “Where Artistic Traditions Meet”.

The Questa Studio Arts Tour is a project of the Questa Creative

Council, a newly formed non-profit that has been organized to

promote and sustain the creative arts and crafts, culture and history

of Questa and the surrounding area.

Questa is one of the older communities in New Mexico, and is

populated by descendants of the original land grant families. It

is a beautiful area, nestled against the Sangre de Christo mountains

and located between the Rio Grande National Monument

and the Carson National Forest. Hiking, fishing, picture-taking,

quaint villages and an historic church are among the many

activities that await the visitor. Questa is located on the scenic

Enchanted Circle byway, along with Taos, Angel Fire and Red

River.
