COURTESY TO GRADUATES

The university wishes to express its appreciation to the audience for extending

courtesy to each graduate.

The university wishes to acknowledge in advance your courtesy for not shouting or

applauding as the candidates’ names are read. Graduates in the past have expressed

their appreciation for the audience remaining seated and showing courtesy so the

names of the individual graduates can be heard by their family and friends.

Please hold your applause until all the graduates of a college have returned to

their seats.

COMMENCEMENT PICTURES

Individuals who wish to take personal pictures beyond those offered by the professional

photographer may do so from an area designated on either side of the stage.

It is respectfully requested individuals refrain from taking pictures in front of the

stage and on the stage fl oor aisles where the candidates are seated as this disrupts

the fl ow of traffi c for the candidates in the commencement ceremony. Graduates

and their families are welcome to use the stage after the ceremony for photographic

opportunities.

SEATING

Seating for family and friends is available on the bleachers and in the balcony.

Reservation of large sections of seating is not allowed. Seating is on a fi rst-come,

fi rst-serve basis. Security offi cers have been asked to monitor seating and will request

the removal of any effort or materials intended to reserve seats. Please help us make

seating guests a pleasant experience.

Limited seating for the disabled is available in the bleacher area on either side in

front of the stage and is also on a fi rst-come, fi rst-serve basis. One person, if necessary,

will be allowed to accompany an individual in this seating area. Due to the

proximity to the stage, guests are required to remain in the designated area until the

entire ceremony is over.

Seating for the hearing impaired is available in Section C in the bleacher area.

CHARGE TO THE GRADUATES

Today you become a member of a select group of men and women numbering in

the thousands — graduates of Fort Hays State University. Remember the university

kindly, for it gave you several years of its very best.

The commencement exercise does not mean a severance of your tie to us or the

university’s tie to you. Like a good parent, its love and concern will always be with

you, ready to help you in any way possible. Commencement does mean the beginning

of a lifetime association with your university, and not only will the university stand

with you, but it also looks to you as a torchbearer and the promoter of its spirit.

Although we are proud of the beauty of our physical campus, its buildings, grounds,

and facilities, we take even more pride in our faculty, staff, and students. Fort Hays State

University is much more than is discernible at any one time. Your university consists

of all those who come into its environment, are touched by its concern, its infl uence,

and those who carry forward its spirit. Wherever you go and whatever you achieve,

there is Fort Hays State University at work. If the light of our university continues to

shine, it must shine through you and all those who have walked our halls, sat in our

classrooms, and were a part of our total campus community.

With a great deal of confi dence, we welcome you into this fellowship. We are not

here to say “goodbye,” but rather we say “till we meet again.” We do not intend to

sever the ties; you may go forth, but not totally away from us. We will always claim

you, and we hope you feel the same way about those of us who remain. God be with

you and with all of us.

in assisting graduate students from the point of inquiry to the point of

matriculation. On behalf of the graduate faculty and staff of the Graduate

School, I congratulate you on your achievement here today.

Education

and

Technology

The College of Education and Technology takes great pride in preparing

elementary and secondary teachers, school specialists in reading, library

media, counseling, school administrators, community counselors,

and business/industrial personnel. We offer bachelor, master, and

education specialist degrees housed in outstanding departments focused

on undergraduate and graduate programs, and technology studies. The

education unit at FHSU, which includes 39 teacher and school professional

programs, recently underwent a successful accreditation review from a

joint state and national team of examiners. Innovative programs such as

Transition to Teaching (an alternative path to teacher licensure) are helping

ease the teacher needs in our state. Partnerships with service centers,

community colleges, and school districts strengthen the mission of the

College. The College has knowledgeable, caring faculty members who love

to teach. They continue to share their enthusiasm for our profession while

preparing professional educators for success. We are proud of the impact of

FHSU education graduates in Kansas schools and beyond.

HONORS AT GRADUATION

There are three levels of academic honors at commencement. Summa cum laude is

awarded to graduates achieving a cumulative grade point of 3.90 or above and 3.90 or

above on FHSU coursework, magna cum laude to graduates achieving a cumulative grade

point of 3.80 to 3.89 and 3.80 to 3.89 on FHSU coursework, and cum laude to graduates

achieving a cumulative grade point of 3.60 to 3.79 and 3.60 to 3.79 on FHSU coursework.

Each student graduating with academic honors must have attended the University for

one of the last two years, and at least 60 hours must be earned in an institution offering

regular upper-division credit.

While honors will be listed in the commencement program for those who may reasonably

anticipate them, the listing in the program is not a guarantee of receiving honors.

The listing and reading of honors for spring degree candidates are based on the grade indexes

achieved at the beginning of the student’s fi nal semester. The offi cial honor awarded

based on fi nal grade indexes will be noted on the student’s diploma and transcript.

The President’s Distinguished Scholar Award was fi rst awarded in 1989. All unclassifi ed

Applications are reviewed by an evaluation committee and a recommendation is forwarded

to the president of the university.

The honoree presents a scholarly lecture during the Honors Convocation. The awardee

PILOT AWARD

The prestigious Pilot Award, established by the Alumni Association in 1974, annually

recognized two outstanding faculty members, one male and one female. Full-time teaching

faculty became eligible after two years of continuous service on the campus of Fort Hays

State University. In 1997, the awards committee of the Alumni Association Board of Directors

revised the criteria so that any teaching faculty member would be eligible after three years

of continuous service to FHSU. The past recipients would also be eligible to receive this honor

again after a fi ve-year waiting period. Finally, the award was to be given to one faculty

member irrespective of gender rather than two. Candidates are nominated by members

of the graduating senior class on the basis of professional excellence and commitment to

outstanding teaching. The recipient is chosen by a committee of seniors, faculty, and Alumni

Association Board members.

ABOUT THIS BUILDING

Gross Memorial Coliseum (GMC), the building in which you are sitting, is the site for

indoor athletics, concerts, and many additional activities.

GMC was formally dedicated September 22, 1973. It is part of a two-unit, multi-use

complex. M.C. Cunningham Hall, just to the south of this structure, is home for the Department

of Health and Human Performance and the Department of Allied Health. The

two units comprise 246,214 square feet of space. This complex cost $7.4 million to construct

and took just over two years in building.

GMC seats approximately 6,200 persons for athletic contests. With the addition of

chairs on the fl oor, about 6,700 can enjoy a concert.

The fl oor of GMC is maple wood. The track is one-tenth of a mile in length. A spacious

pressbox is located above the fl oor on the west side, and a complete stage area for

special programs is located on the north end of the fl oor. Concession areas and restrooms

are abundant.

This is an air-cooled (not air-conditioned) building which, from the fl oor to the top of

the structure, measures about fi ve stories high. The complex is located on the western

edge of the campus on Highway 40 bypass.

FIRST AID, courtesy of the Student Health Center, is located in the Training Room on the lower

level between gates 1 and 2.

Acknowledgement to Mortar Board for distribution of commencement programs.

UNIVERSITY ANTHEM

On the plains of Western Kansas

Stands a school we all love well.

‘Twas built by the toil of our fathers;

To its glory our voices swell.

Chorus:

Hail to old Fort Hays State!

Let your voices ring.

Praise for the Black and Gold

We will ever sing.

Long may our valor last

Through the future days,

Hon’ring and praising

Dear Fort Hays.

In the years that lie before us

We foresee our land’s many needs.

Through the efforts of new generations,

We’ll go on to more noble deeds.
