THE
LAMB
INN
After a long overdue catch up with my good
friend Jodie, we decided a get together was in
order and booked a table at The Lamb at
Edgmond. Neither of us had been to the Lamb
for a few years, certainly not since Lance and
Debbie had taken over in 2019 so we was
unsure of what to expect but had heard many
good things so was hopeful.
After being greeted at the door and shown to
our table by a lovely member of staff, our drinks
order was taken, and we sat back and relaxed.
Under the current safe distancing rules, we felt
very safe, we were asked to use hand sanitiser
at the door, all staff had face shields on, tables
were well spaced out and several dividers up.
Looking through the menu we were both quite
taken back with the amount of choice on offer
plenty of starters to choose from then platters,
pastas and salads, a grill selection, stone baked
pizzas, burgers and a fabulous selection of The
Lamb favourites. There is also a light bites lunch
menu, jacket potatoes and hot and cold
sandwiches available daily from 12noon –
3.30pm.
The starter choice was easy for me once I
noticed the trio of panko breaded cheeses,
whilst Jodie chose the chicken and duck terrine
with plum and apple chutney and warm toasted
ciabatta shards. We both commented on how
busy it was for a Thursday afternoon but what
a relaxed enjoyable atmosphere and such
attentive friendly staff.
Our waitress, Aysha, arrived with our starters
looking like something from a posh nosh
restaurant, presentation was impeccable, but
what was even better was the taste! My trio of
cheeses consisted of a wedge of camembert,
French brie and a slice on halloumi, all laying on
a bed of rocket, caramelised walnuts and
beetroot, why has this not been on a menu
before, the chef is a genius. The cheeses were
all warm, the camembert melted out and was
so creamy, the halloumi was fantastic with the
panko breadcrumbs. I spent the entire dish
deciding which cheese was my favourite,
eventually deciding on the French brie. All
ingredients complimented each other perfectly
and a very generous, enjoyable starter.
“
Superb quality
food with service
to match!
”
Scene Local Media 01952 780058
Jodie’s equally looking stunning was a slab of textured,
chunky and fresh terrine with a real meaty taste to it, a pot of
chutney and two large slices of thin ciabatta, Jodie stated it
was just bursting with flavour and simply delicious. Again, a
good portion size and the perfect balance of bread, pate and
chutney.
Once our starters were removed, we eagerly awaited our
mains. With such an array of mains to choose from you really
are spoilt for choice, I toyed between the pie, steak, a pizza
and the black and blue burger, eventually choosing the slow
cooked free range Shropshire belly pork and Jodie decided
on the Thai inspired red curry that you could choose with
chicken, veg or king prawn.
I must add there is plenty of fish dishes on the menu too,
salmon, mussels, cod, prawns etc including a seafood medley
pasta, for all you fish lovers out there.
As we chatted and I watched a nearby diner have the pie and
chips delivered to his table, it looked amazing with proper
shortcrust pastry, I hadn’t ordered this this time, but will
definitely be back to try it and was slightly wishing I had
ordered it. Thankfully once my belly pork arrived the greeneyed
monster for the pie disappeared and my eyes lit with
delight. WOW, how do I start to describe this
fabulous creation? Three big chunks of belly pork
with the perfect crispy crackling, a pot of cauliflower
cheese, fondant potato and fresh veg that included
my favourite tender stem broccoli, all smothered
with apple puree and orchard thieves sauce and the
cutest little pot of gravy. Even though we were still
in August during this particular visit, it was cold, and
this was the perfect main to warm you through.
Jodie’s Thai curry was again presented well with a
generous portion of jasmine rice, and a bowl of
chicken Thai inspired red curry, and freshly cooked
mini prawn crackers. I just had to try some, and it
was just so tasty, floral and fragrant with just the
perfect kick to it, you could taste the lemongrass
and coconut blended together with the red chilli’s
and other herbs and spices. Plenty of chunks of
chicken and lots of veg in a soupy curry. The freshly
cooked prawn crackers were fab and a real nice
treat to the packet ones you usually get.
Both mains were faultless, flavoursome and
fantastic. All the ingredients were clearly fresh and
cooked with passion. We were both taken back by
the quality and taste that was being served, and
really pleased we had made the decision to visit the
Lamb. I must also add that all the staff were so well
mannered and helpful especially Aysha.
After two delicious courses we were of course getting very
full, however leaving without trying a dessert wasn’t an
option, we had to see if they were as equally as good of
course, especially with so many available.
I chose the raspberry and white chocolate meringue with
summer berries and raspberry sorbet and Jodie chose the
vanilla crème brulee. My meringue was rather spectacular
and more like an ice cream sundae with a posh swirled
complete meringue on top that was super lush and tasty. The
bottom of the dish was crushed meringue with cream then
juicy raspberries and a refreshing sorbet. Jodie’s crème brulee
was topped with 2 heart shaped shortbreads, once she
cracked through the caramelised burnt sugar was a
beautifully creamy crème brulee. Again, faultless and
amazing desserts.
The Lamb is certainly setting a high standard with quality food
on offer and a service to match and with so many dishes on
offer you could try something new each visit. Both myself and
Jodie would highly recommend the Lamb Inn and already
planning our next visit.
Well done to Debbie, Lance & the team!

WINDSOR & ETON BREWERY
BEER THROUGH THE YEAR
As always, enjoy!
Trevor Langley
Windsor & Eton Brewery was founded during 2010 and now proudly possesses a Royal Warrant.
Producing great classic and new beer styles, a good number of which are bottle conditioned,
this brewery has a range of very impressive ales, that includes award winners and multi awardwinning
productions.
KNIGHT of the GARTER Golden Ale: (3.8% vol). Described, on the label, as ‘Sunshine in a
glass’ (I agree), this golden ale is brewed with a blend of hops from the New World. A citrus
aroma greets the nasal senses, which follows, admirably, to the mouthfeel.
GUARDSMAN Best Bitter: (4.2% vol). Extremely popular, Guardsman is brewed utilising
Fuggles and Goldings whole leaf hops to great advantage. This easy-drinking,
smooth production, has wide appeal, with its copper colour and excellent taste.
A favourite with numerous beer lovers.
WINDSOR KNOT Pale Ale: (4.5% vol). Brewed originally to commemorate the
wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, this beer uses Sovereign and
Nelson Sauvin hops and has many supporters amongst pale ale devotees.
REPUBLIKA Craft Pilsner: (4.8% vol). This splendid craft beer is one of several
productions, from the Windsor & Eton Brewery, which have won awards.
Combinations of Saaz hops, Czech yeast and Pilsner malt produce this fullflavoured
delight, which I found very refreshing.
Come and relax in our beer garden
overlooking the River
Severn
CONQUEROR Black IPA: (5.0% vol). Bringing together
Cascade and Pacific Jade whole leaf hops, plus a blend of five
speciality malts, this complex and noticeably rich IPA gained
great interest from the outset. Superb, awesome and brilliant
are some of the descriptions attributed to this beer.
WASTELAND Double IPA: (10.0% vol). Belgian candi sugar is
one of the ingredients for this Double IPA with ten different
hops, that include some of the best of America and the New
World. Another exceptional IPA, which certainly delivers on
aroma, mouthfeel and the palate’s enjoyment, from the
Windsor & Eton Brewery.
Other popular productions include Capital Dry-Hopped Lager
and Treason West Coast IPA. Ordering is easy and beers are
delivered via courier to anywhere in the UK. Visitors to the
brewery are made very welcome.

Looking for the best
Afternoon Tea?
WELL WE HAVE FOUND IT!
With afternoon teas becoming ever more popular, when I noticed Green Fields
Farm Shops started to offer a takeaway service it had to be a ‘must try’.
Knowing Green Fields only stock the best of the best and, mainly locally
produced items, I had a feeling this was going to be very special and I certainly
wasn’t disappointed.
Often seeing many afternoon teas across social media all looking fantastic, my
first thought is always ‘there needs to be more savoury items’, don’t get me
wrong, I love a good cake and scone but also a bit more than a sandwich to
start with.
Arranging collection of 2 boxes (enough for 4 people) I was able to enter Green
F ields safely to collect. Presented beautifully the boxes consisted of a selection
of cheese and onion sandwiches and egg mayo which had clearly been made
from the fresh bread they stock there and totally delicious. However, much to
my delight the box also consisted of two slices of quiche, a proper sausage roll,
a pork pie and a scotch egg – all chopped into slices and with fresh salad and a
pot of chutney. Now this was an afternoon tea fit for a king and queen.
You could really tell the quality difference with each item, fresh and bursting
with flavours. It was fantastic to have such a selection and taste the variety of
fresh items Green Fields stock, Ill certainly be going there for pork pies and
sausage rolls from now on!
Now on to the best bit – the cakes!
Each box had a slice of Crystals chocolate
brownie, a Crystals cupcake and a
homemade scone, pot of jam and Cornish
Clotted Cream. With eyes bigger than our
bellies we opted to share half of each cake
and save the other half for supper (which
turned out to be a great decision). The
brownie was literally like a chocolate
butter, it just melted and was incredible.
Our selection of Crystals cupcakes were
lemon and a marzipan,
I doubt there is many people that haven’t
tried a Crystals cupcake by now, simply the
most marvellous cupcakes you could ever
eat. Slightly overshadowed by these
beauties the scones still offered the
perfect end to an afternoon tea, fresh,
crumbly and perfect when topped with
the jam and clotted cream.
The entire box of goodies was faultless and a pure delight. Very
reasonably priced at £12 per person (minimum of two people).
We didn’t make any special requests for fillings or cake
selections, but this can be arranged, although I would say the
choice was spot on, and vegan / gluten and other special dietary
requirements can be catered for upon request.
The perfect way to spend an afternoon tea with a friend, partner,
colleague, family member or just a treat for you and little ones!
You won’t be disappointed!

FLINT & PARTNERS
OPTOMETRISTS
PROVIDING EMERGENCY AND
ROUTINE EXAMINATIONS
Whilst many practices were closed throughout lockdown, Flint and Partners
remained open - providing Emergency Care only - on occasions working from
7.00a.m. and delivering vision solutions to disabled and/or shielded patients
throughout the night.
We’ve been extremely busy caring for both our own patients and new ones
with a range of eye care and vision emergencies from the easily solvable such
as repairing broken glasses, to more complex sight threatening conditions
and serious general health issues.
Our state of the art equipment and continuously updated clinical skills enable
us to diagnose urgent problems with a degree of accuracy which, in most
cases, means patients do not need to be triaged when they arrive at hospital
and are directed to the appropriate consultant without delay.
There are situations where early, accurate diagnosis and treatment is critical
in preventing loss of vision, hence we are known by a number ofpatients as
“sightsavers!”
The same is true with some general health conditions, although we find that
many people are unaware of the extent to which a number of health
problems needing GP or hospital referrals, can be detected via thorough eye
examinations; this why we encourage as many people as possible to take
advantage of our Enhanced Eye Examination available privately at a cost of
£89, or £49 as a supplement to those entitled to NHS care.
Presently and going forward, we are now able to offer routine
examinations in addition to emergency care. Our Tettenhall Road practice is
open six days from 9am and our Codsall and Wednesfield branches are open
on a reduced basis – please ring for appointments.
We have suspended our Brewood surgery presently, given the reduced
access to GP appointments and the requirement to limit the number of
people waiting in enclosed spaces, but you all will be welcome at our Codsall
practice.
Understandably, some people are still wary of going into public places; we
have the welfare of patients and staff uppermost in our procedures and offer
a smaller number of consultations per day in a safe and uncrowded
environment.
This enables us to carry out additional hygiene precautions for both your own
protection and that of our staff. We havescreens in place and all our
optometrists have face protection together with gloves which are changed
between patient consultations, the equipment being appropriately
disinfected also.
We aim to make your experience as worry free and pleasant as possible; our
convenient locations mean that there is no need to travel unnecessarily
causing you to be exposed to crowded environments.
Our frames are also cleaned, sterilised and stored so you can ensure your
styling session is as comfortable as the eye examination.

Brewood CE Middle Academy are delighted
to have their pupils back into school...
Mr J Smith as Acting
Executive Principal
On Thursday 3rd September,
Brewood CE Middle
Academy opened up again
for all its pupils following the
national pandemic. Interim
Executive Principal, Jon
Smith explained that “it has
been a long wait for pupils,
staff and parents but we are
delighted to have our pupils
back into school and we are
all ready for a positive and
successful year ahead”.
The mission at Brewood has
always been to educate the
pupils within a safe, happy,
caring Christian environment, where all are valued
and encouraged to fulfil their potential in all aspects
of school life. The school motto of ‘Be the Best you
can Be’ exemplifies what the school expects of pupils
and adults alike. This is underpinned by the school’s
belief that all pupils should ‘live life in all its fullness’ –
John 10:10
In April 2018 our OFSTED Inspection judged the
school as ‘Good’ for overall effectiveness with
‘Personal development, behaviour and welfare’
judged as ‘Outstanding’.
British Values are embedded in the life of the school
and are actively promoted through spiritual, moral,
social and cultural education forming a part of the
school’s distinctive Christian character.
The school were delighted to join the St Chad’s Multi-
Academy Trust in 1 October 2019 and the many new
opportunities for the school, staff and pupils,
enabling them to raise standards further.
The strong pastoral care system within the school
helps them to develop pupils as confident individuals
who have self-discipline, respect for others and a
caring attitude towards the community in which they
live. Pupils are given opportunities to develop
leadership and life skills and are strongly encouraged
to take part in extra-curricular activities which
develop their full potential. At Brewood CE Middle
Academy, all stakeholders want all pupils to engage
in learning in a safe and welcoming environment.
Pupils at Brewood can choose from a wide range of
musical instrument lessons led by experienced
peripatetic teachers work in the school’s ‘Major Minor’
Music School. There is a thriving choir at school which
performs both in school and also at community
events.
A ‘virtual tour of the school’ can be found in the
‘Transition the Brewood 2020’ section of the school
website whilst a “Presentation to New Parents – June

Education
Big Enough to
Deliver, Small
Enough to Care
by Sarah Morris,
Headmistress,
Birchfield School
The last school term was undoubtedly a huge test for every
member of school communities, from the youngest Reception
pupil to parents, to the senior management team. Whilst
secondary school pupils faced losing their GSCE and A Level
examinations and leaving their schools without the usual
goodbyes and celebrations, primary pupils across the country
have also had to dig deep to cope with varying levels of remote
learning and technology – no mean feat for young children,
particularly in the formative early years.
As a result, the level of pupils’ interaction with their teachers and
classmates has varied hugely from school to school, with it
being widely reported that some children have missed almost
a full term of their schooling, delivering justifiable concerns
about catching up and the impact on children’s futures.
Birchfield School, Albrighton, with its thriving community of
passionate teachers and aspirational children, committed from
the outset of the coronavirus lockdown to look after each and
every child in their care with the these key objectives in mind:
pupil well-being, live academic delivery, daily teacher contact,
enrichment projects and a varied sporting challenge
programme.
Birchfield School prides itself on delivering an all-round
education and therefore during lockdown, our pupils benefitted
from a superb Griffin Learning programme of remote live
lessons with their teachers, supported by self-directed work at
home, personal feedback and marking of work as usual by the
hardworking and dedicated teaching team.
A weekly newsletter reported on and showcased a gallery of our
pupils working from home and undertaking numerous
challenges, competitions and set activities for their teachers,
whilst assemblies became weekly round-ups, where pupils were
recognised for their achievements and House successes
reported.
Whilst there is clearly no substitute for the experience of being
physically at school, the success of our bespoke remote Griffin
Learning programme has been such that Birchfield will retain
and incorporate key elements of the programme into the
curriculum going forward.
If you feel your child has missed out on their education in the
last term, please do contact Birchfield to find out how we
dedicate every moment to ensuring your child has the very best
start in life. We would be delighted to offer you a personal tour
of Birchfield to discover for yourself just what it is that makes a
Birchfield education such a special, memorable and effective
time of your child’s young life.

GOOD OLD FASHIONED
Home Cooked Food
INGREDIENTS:
140g plain flour
3 eggs
Eggs
300ml milk
2 tsp Dijon mustard
2 tbsp vegetable oil
8 Cumberland sausages
8 sage
Sage leaves
4 rosemary
Rosemary sprigs
METHOD
Heat oven to 240C/220C
fan/gas 9. In a food
processor, combine the flour,
eggs, milk, mustard and
some salt and pepper, blitz
until smooth, then leave to
rest for 30 mins.
Pour the oil into a metal
roasting tin about 30 x 23cm
and 7.5cm deep. Brush the
oil all over the sides and
bottom, then place in the
oven. When the roasting tin
is very hot and smoking,
place the sausages inside,
evenly spread out, and cook
for 5 mins.
Give the rested batter a stir
and pour into the really hot
tin – take care as it may spit.
Quickly sprinkle over the
sage leaves and rosemary,
then place in the middle of
the oven. Do not open the
door for 25 mins, then check
– if needed, cook for a
further 5-10 mins. Cook until
puffed up and brown and the
batter is completely cooked
through. Serve straight from
the dish.

INGREDIENTS
2 celerysticks, sliced into 1cm pieces
1 onion, chopped
2 really big carrots, halved lengthways
then chunkily sliced
5 bay leaves
3 thyme sprigs
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp butter
2 tbsp each plain flour, tomato purée and
Worcestershire sauce
2 beef stock cubes, crumbled
850g feather blade beef, or other braising cut, cut into
large chunks
850g large potato
25g each mature cheddar and parmesan
finely grated
METHOD
Mix together the lemon zest, rosemary and olive oil and
set aside to infuse. Get 8 long skewers ready, if using
wooden skewers, soak in water for 10 mins first.
Thread 3 meatballs and pieces of different veg onto each
skewer, alternating between each. Brush all over with the
lemon and rosemary marinade.
Preheat a barbecue or griddle pan until very hot.
Barbecue the skewers for 12-15 mins, turning often, until
the meat is cooked through and the veg is tender and
lightly charred.
Serve the kebabs with lemon wedges to squeeze over
and some aioli to drizzle or dip, if you like.
Scampi with tartare sauce
INGREDIENTS
15-20 langoustine or Dublin Bay
prawn tails
Vegetable or sunflower oil for
frying
140g plain flour
85g cornflour
150ml beer
100ml sparkling water
lemon wedges and chips,
to serve
FOR THE TARTARE SAUCE
6 tbsp mayonnaise
1 gherkin or 6 cornichons, finely
chopped
1 tbsp caper, rinsed and
chopped
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tbsp chopped parsley
2 tsp chopped tarragon
Method
To prepare the langoustines, pull
off the head and pincers. Lay the
tail flat on a chopping board and
use a sharp pair of scissors to cut a
line straight down the back of the
shell. Carefully peel the
Easy treacle
sponge
langoustine, score down the back,
then remove the grit sac.
Get the oil heating in a large
saucepan or wok – you will need
enough to come 2-3in up the side
of the pan. For the tartare sauce,
mix all ingredients in a bowl and
season.
Place the flours in a bowl with a
good pinch of salt and pepper. Add
the beer and sparkling water, and
whisk to a smooth batter.
To test if the oil is hot enough, put
a drop of batter into the pan – it
should crisp and brown within 30
secs. Dip each langoustine or
prawn tail into the batter, then
carefully drop it into the oil.
Drizzle a little extra batter over
each one while they are cooking –
this will give you a really crispy
coating. Cook them in batches,
making sure you don’t overcrowd
the pan. When golden and floating
to the surface, scoop out and drain
well on kitchen paper. Sprinkle the
scampi with salt and serve with the
tartare sauce, lemon wedges and
chips.

ADVICE TO DOG OWNERS TO HELP
THEIR PETS ADJUST TO THE CHANGE
As some return to work, we're issuing advice to dog owners to help their pets
adjust to the change...
For many of us, life has changed significantly during the Covid-19 lockdown and
it's also changed for our dogs. When the restrictions are lifted, we will have to
adjust again to returning to our normal routines - and our pets will too.
Woof
TOP TIPS FOR PREPARING YOUR DOG
• Gradually change the timings of your dog's routine to the way they will eventually be. If the time you feed
or walk your dog has changed due to lockdown then slowly start to change it back to how it was before.
Doing this can prevent your dog from experiencing frustration and anxiety when their daily schedule
suddenly doesn't match what they've come to expect.
• Begin to gradually return your dog's routine to normal before it must change. Consider the number of walks,
location and times that are part of your dog's normal routine. Gradually adjust your walks to match this. Our
dogs may not be left alone at all during lockdown or for brief intervals only, and they're getting much more
attention and interaction. But if this is likely to change when you go back to work then you need to prepare
them for that. Begin to gradually decrease the amount of attention you give your dog and increase the time
they spend on their own. This may include not playing with your dog every time they ask or not stroking
them every time, they nudge you. Don't completely ignore your dog as this may confuse them but do give
them something better to do like a comfy bed to lay on or a tasty chew to settle with.
• Give them a routine as close as possible to the one they'll experience when restrictions are lifted. Help your
dog spend more time alone by encouraging them to rest in their own bed or keeping them in a separate
room while you do something else.
• Give your dog clear signals about when they can be involved in interactions and when they need to occupy
themselves. Chew toys or interactive toys your dog can use without you can help you to do this.
• Try to keep interaction time for when you will be available once your routine is back to normal, for example
in the evenings after dinner.
• You may also want to think about leaving the house without the dog to help your dog to gradually get used
to this part of their routine again. If you need to build up this time for a longer duration or for more frequent
absences, think about going to sit in the car to read a book, so that you can leave the house and stay within
government guidelines. However, if your dog shows any distress when left alone then pause your plans and
seek the support of a qualified behaviorist.
• If you are returning to using a dog walker, friend or family member to care for your dog while you are busy,
they might be very excited or even a little apprehensive having spent time with only you. It can be useful
for you to remain home on the first walk or two, just in case your dog needs any extra support from you.

REDUCE STRESS ADVICE:
Security blankets, specialised treats and personal toys also provide comfort for stressed-out pets. Try to use items
that already contain our scent, perhaps a towel or blanket, which will make canines feel even more secure.
Calming background noise like classical music has been used to “calm the savage beast” and can work the same for
many dogs. While we’re away from home, these relaxing tones can provide comfort during our absence. Some pet
owners simply leave the television set on for some companionship while we’re busy and work, school or while
running errands.
Providing mental stimulation is just as effective as physical exercise and the two can also be combined.
Think about different types of toys available that entice a dog to work for a treat or reward.

Taking care of yourself is
taking care of others
I’m taking a moment to reflect before
I write; giving consideration to what
I feel may be most useful for this edition.
As we are about to enter the autumn of
2020, there seems to be a lot of concern
around ‘second waves’ of COVID-19
hitting us hard and with it the potential
for enforced local lock-downs disrupting
the usual way of life. Of course we cannot
be sure of anything and this can give rise
to uncertainty for us all.
In Occupational Therapy we promote
health and well-being and encourage
people to find a balance. Taking a
bio-psycho-social approach this allows us
to consider how a person functions, how
they think and feel and how their
environment impacts them day-to-day.
Ask yourself …
How does your body feel?
What are your fears?
What do you think about?
Are you kind to yourself?
Does your environment
benefit you?
What (if anything) could you
change?
If there is one thing this pandemic has
taught us, it is the importance of taking
greater care of ourselves. We are not all
‘in the same boat’ right now, but if we
all take care of ourselves as individuals
then we are more likely to take care of
one another in the broader sense.
Scene Local Media 01952 780058
So; what can we do?
The Immune system:
Put basically, the immune system helps us fight disease and infection and there are many reasons
it can be weak and therefore make us more vulnerable. Genetic factors can affect the way the
immune system functions, our environment and our lifestyles. We have more control over our life
styles and therefore this is what we can focus on in preparation for the colder months ahead.
• SLEEPING is essential to good health, it is the basis of fundamental good health - if you have a regular sleep/wake cycle you are more
likely to regulate cardio vascular health and maintain the natural balance of your internal organs, you are more likely to have increased
cognition and brighter moods too!
• EATING AND DRINKING habits
can be modified for optimal health,
ensuring we eat more natural fruit
and vegetables and a balance of
carbohydrates and dairy than we do
processed sugary foods – this will also
help balance the mechanism of the
bodies internal organs. We are also
beginning to understand the importance of gut health and how gut health can greatly impact mood levels.
Pro- biotics can be a great way to balance gut flora.
• EXERCISE reduces inflammation and thus frees up the immune system to fight any unwanted infections, it is
worth noting that physically active people are also more resistant to respiratory illness. Exercise increases white
blood cell production in the body and these fight infection – so it really is important for us all and if that’s not all,
our mood greatly improves after we exercise too!
• CLEANING your digital feed could never be more important than right now! According to research conducted
in America, the average mobile phone user today touches their phone 2,617 times per day. Some ‘high end’
social media users can spend up to and above five hours a day on their phone. It really is becoming a dangerous
and addictive habit to engage in. WHAT CAN BE DONE? 1. Remove unwanted advertising from your feed 2. Remove negative
people/companies from your feed 3. Reduce your screen time (there are great tools in your settings to help with this)
• ‘BE KIND TO YOUR MIND’ In simple terms we need to be mindful when our thoughts are becoming more negative than positive. It is
so normal to have fearful or worried thoughts, this is because we are hard wired to identify risk, danger and potential threat to life but
as we all know and have experienced these thoughts can often run wild in the landscape of our minds, we have to challenge those
thoughts and pay attention to where we focus our energy; ‘where thoughts go energy flows’! (sorry-couldn’t help but use that one!)
Our immune systems are amazing but we can optimize them by taking care of ourselves and when we take care of ourselves, we can
then take care of others. From basic sleep hygiene to an improved diet and raised levels of fitness we can improve the way our bodies
function. Getting outside while we can is really important as we will absorb more vitamin D through sunlight. All of this is in our power,
we can have a positive impact on our bodies and our minds and we can also try to improve the environment we live in, try introducing
oxygenating plants to your home or office to improve air quality.
The good news is that these changes can be made quite easily and the results can be felt relatively quickly, it is also very important to
remember that this is about balance NOT perfection. The point is we can try to take greater care and in trying we can also encourage
others to do the same.

Car Review
FORD PUMA
By Sue Cooke
It was so good this week to get behind the wheel of a car
that constantly pulled second looks because of its eyecatching
styling. It could also have been due to the
glorious CAR 1 number plate on the new Ford Puma. As I
put knee to tarmac to take a photo from the front, I realised
how high the bonnet sits. Flagged by wing top mounted
headlamps this Puma’s eyes are as piercing and distinctive
as the animal.
And out on the road the compact crossover has a feline
growl on hard acceleration and much more torque at lower
engine speeds. The 1 litre EcoBoost hybrid and 48 volt
lithium ion air cooled battery pack makes for a powerful
response, such that I had to keep reminding myself to
move up the six speed manual gearbox.
A display on the dash informed me when I was in hybrid
mode, which was mainly when cruising downhill. Energy
usually lost is recovered and stored during braking and
coasting. The Auto Start stop technology is impressive
when I was waiting at road work traffic lights and the
engine restarted “in the same amount of time as the blink
of an eye”, describes Ford, with no turbo lag.
In the cabin a raised ride height gives the driver a good
view over traffic ahead. Pure luxuries include a large
panoramic roof which stretches front to back, giving a
welcome wind in the hair experience on a hot day. There is
also a Lumbar Massage seat. Puma models include the
stylish Titanium, or sporty ST-Line and ST-Line X. The
latter was my road test car which adds a flat-bottomed
leather steering wheel and alloy sports pedals. Privacy
glass sits in the rear windows.
New technology will inform the driver of hazardous
situations on the road ahead before either I or the vehicle
sensors could see them.
This Puma has a fantastic degree of practicality in a
compact and efficient package. When I came to open the
Scene Local Media 01952 780058
456 litres boot there was another surprise for a car in this
price range, as there is a hands-free tailgate. When I got
a bit acquisitive at the garden centre, as I had not visited
for a long time, it was very useful to find a MegaBox
storage solution. This will house unstable items up to
approximately 115 cm tall in an upright position. Synthetic
lining and a drain plug in the bottom made it easy to clean.
The flexible load compartment can also comfortably
accommodate a box 112 cm long, 97 cm wide and 43 cm
high with the second row of seats folded flat.
The sports suspension is not as unforgiving as some of its
competitors and I found the ride comfortable. The Desert
Island Blue exterior paintwork is an exclusive optional
colour which is very attractive. One of 10 vibrant colours to
choose from.
SUVs now account for more than one in five Ford vehicles
sold in Europe. Almost 7,000 new Pumas have been sold
in the UK since going on sale earlier this year. 90.7 per
cent of those sales are the mild-hybrid engine, available
from £21,640.
By the end of my road test week, I was quite in love with
the new Ford Puma and its sporty character, combining
mild-hybrid fuel efficiency, best-in-class luggage space and
advanced driver assistance technologies in a stylish
crossover.

Car Review
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
By Sue Cooke
Imagine driving along minding your own
business and then your VW car tells you
that you are about to have an accident.
Your car then tells other cars behind and
around that an accident is about to
happen. The driver is warned and can react in good time.
Futuristic? No, it is here now. The new Golf is the first car in
Europe to feature Car2X technology. German automotive
association ADAC declared this as a ‘technical milestone’.
Within a radius of up to 800 metres, connected vehicles can
exchange information and warn of danger or make contact
with the traffic infrastructure within a matter of milliseconds.
The technology can also communicate with nearby traffic
lights. Following the launch of the Car2X in the new eighth
generation compact car, the technology will be available in
future VW models.
The latest Golf is the most intelligent and connected yet. Tell
the car that your hands are cold and the heated steering
wheel will automatically activate. It takes a little getting used
to the sliders and touch panels for all key functions. Many of
the interior buttons and switchgear have been removed,
giving a clean profile to the digital ‘innovision’ cockpit, which
is fitted as standard. While getting used to the controls, I
found good use of the optional natural voice recognition
system.
I like the head up display which is optional on the Golf Life
trim. The speed I am achieving, and the speed of the road
are projected onto the windscreen which keeps my eyes on
the road. All cars should have a head up display. Driving in
the dark, there are subtle strips of blue light along the inner
doors and this feature offers 32 colour options. 22 separate
LED lights perform a dynamic indicator sweep function and
dynamic curve lighting, which is great if you want to show off!
You can even set up your mobile phone so it acts as the
vehicle key. Just remember to remove the details when you
sell on your phone!
Scene Local Media 01952 780058
The Golf has been around for a while,
just 45 years with more than 35 million
examples built but number 8 is
completely new and keeps the distinctive
C pillar design to show its lineage. My
road test car arrived in a gorgeous lime yellow metallic which
costs an extra £625. I realise I must have sounded quite a
braggart, when people said what a beautiful colour and I said
yes it is isn’t it!
There is a wide choice of drivetrains, four petrol, two diesels,
three mild hybrids and a powerful GTE plug in hybrid. The
most popular is predicted to be the 1.5 litre petrol with 130PS,
a manual gearbox and ‘Life’ trim. Other trims include Style
and R-Line. I road tested the same but with 150PS.
What I always like about Volkswagen cars is the positive
steering. Accelerate and corner and the tyres will stick to the
road like glue.
The majority of sales of the new Golf are predicted to be to
the fleet sector (65%) and maybe company car drivers who
clock up high mileage will use the fantastic technology the
most, but everyone will appreciate the new safety systems.
The Golf GTi, GTE and GTD are expected to go on sale in
the UK later this year. Information on the Golf R and Golf
Estate will be revealed in the coming months.

Auction prices continue to soar –
proving now’s the time to sell!
Against a backdrop of global financial uncertainty, bidders
are spending big at auction. But while one may expect a peak
in investors stockpiling gold and quality jewellery, West
Midlands auction house Cuttlestones has noticed an uplift in
prices across the board – with some surprises along the way.
Having adjusted its business model during lockdown to
100% online auctions to safeguard both staff and customers
at its sale rooms in Penkridge and Wolverhampton, the firm
has reaped the benefits and attracted a new audience of
bidders – and seen an uplift in prices along the way.
‘Traditional’ big-sellers – such as collectible coins, watches,
fine jewellery and gold continue to perform well, with sellers
able to rest assured that lots will sell based on their intrinsic
value rather than the dreaded ‘scrap price’. However, the uplift
has also been noticed in lots that have been ‘off-trend’ until
recently, as Ben explains:
“We’ve got a global audience of engaged bidders who are
willing to part with their cash, so there really has never been
a better time to sell at auction. Even ‘traditional’ ceramics
which, until recently, held limited appeal, as flying – for
example, a tray of Royal Albert Floral Crown teaware, which
a few months ago would have struggled to achieve £100, saw
the hammer fall at £950; whilst Lot 125 – a tray of mixed
Wedgwood Jasperware – achieved £320.
“These are the kind of things that many households have so,
why not clear out the clutter or part with that tea service
that’s been languishing in the loft for the past decade?”

Can
seeing the glass

longer?
Studies have found that there is a
correlation between increasing levels
of optimism with decreasing levels of
death from cancer, disease, infection
and stroke. This is particularly true for
cases of cardiovascular disease.
Those who had the highest levels
of optimism had an almost
40% lower risk of heart
disease.
ATM Machines and Public Toilets
Are Equally Dirty
Withdrawing money from a cash machine is
something many of us do regularly, but how
many of us give our hands a wash after using
them? Cleanliness tests carried out in Britain
found that ATM machines were as dirty as
the toilets. Specialists investigated swabs
taken from the cash machine keyboards and
from public toilets nearby and found both
samples had the same bacteria known to
lead to sickness.
We hear a lot about
the negative effects of caffeine
on our health, but it turns out that
caffeine has its good points too.
Research from the Harvard School of
Public Health found that women who
drank a minimum of four cups of coffee
per day could lower their risk of
depression by 20 per cent. Earlier
research also found that females who
drank two or more cups per day were
less likely to commit suicide.
The strongest muscle in
your body is ….
Our muscle strength can be measured in
different ways. If you are referring to the
muscle that can exert the most force,
then your calf muscle, the soleus, would
be the winner. However, if you want to
find the muscle that can exert the most
pressure, then the jaw muscle, or the
masseter, would be the strongest. The
human jaw can close teeth with a force as
great as 200 pounds, or 890 newtons!
If you are physically tired, the best
thing to do is exercise as it will give
you more energy than sitting. Studies
have found that the blood and oxygen
flow through the body will give you
more energy and improve your mood.
The increase in endorphin levels can
contribute to a feeling of well-being.
Chewing Gum Makes You
More Alert
If your suffering from a mid-afternoon
slump or can’t seem to concentrate in
the morning, then try chewing some
gum to make you feel awake. Coventry
University researchers found that
chewing mint flavoured gum
dramatically reduced feelings of
tiredness. Another study on the subject
found that chewing gum can improve
overall test scores and memory by
35 per cent, relieve stress and
reduce anxiety levels.
Sit-Ups Won’t Give You A Flat Stomach
Many people fall into the trap of thinking that they
can achieve a flat stomach by doing crunches. But
the truth is, endless amounts of crunches won’t give
you the stomach of your dreams - as the exercise
only works your abs, not your core muscles. One
study published in the Journal of Strength and
Conditioning Research found carrying out six
weeks of abdominal exercises alone was not enough
to reduce abdominal fat.
JOKES:
I invited my girlfriend to go to the gym with me and then
I didn’t show.
I hope she gets the message that we’re not working out.
Why doesn't the bell ring at the gym?
It's a dumb-bell.
Saw an idiot on a treadmill in the gym...
They just put their water bottle in the pringles can holder.
My wife accused me of being immature.
I told her to get out of my fort.
I broke my finger last week. On the other hand, I'm OK!
Just been to the gym and there's a new machine there.
I only used it for about an hour, as I started to feel sick,
but it's great: it's got KitKats, Mars bars, crisps and
everything in it.

Care in the community
Could a WATCH alarm give
you peace of mind?
WATCH alarms offer peace of mind and reassurance to people all across Telford &
Wrekin and Shropshire, as well as their families and friends. The pendant alarm service
is not just for older people - people of all ages can benefit from it. WATCH is ideal for
people with disabilities, medical restrictions, life-limiting conditions and vulnerabilities.
The service supports individuals looking to technology to help them remain
independent in their own homes with the reassurance that help is available at the
touch of a button - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The lifeline pendant alarm simply connects to a phone line and is operated by the
touch of a button, via a pendant worn around the neck or wrist. A powerful microphone
on the alarm unit means that help can be called from anywhere in and around the
property.
The alarm can also be adapted to each person’s needs with a range of add-on
equipment such as falls detectors, door contact sensors and pill dispensers.
Customer, Miss Egan, explains: “I’m epileptic and with my WATCH alarm I know that if I
have a fit my mum will be called or a paramedic can get in if necessary.”
WATCH also offers to supply and fit police approved key safes. This is useful for people
who receive care at home. For WATCH alarm customers, the code is stored safely with
the monitoring centre to be shared with emergency services if required.
WATCH is certified under the Quality Standards Framework by TEC Quality which provides assurance to its users that they deliver
quality in what is otherwise a largely unregulated industry

What landlords need to know
about the new electrical safety laws
Landlords face tough financial penalties if they fail to comply with new electrical safety laws. The government has already announced that it
intends to introduce legislation requiring landlords to carry out additional electrical checks.
Now it’s taking things a step further by insisting that these checks are completed by a fully qualified workmen.
WHAT ELECTRICAL QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED?
However, what these fully qualified inspectors actually look like has
yet to be decided, with the government still to publish further
details.
What’s known is that the workmen will be required to carry out the
tests in line with existing British Standards (known as BS7671),
which cover the safety of electrical installations.
But the government insists the requirements won’t place ‘excessive
cost and time burdens on landlords’.
REDUCING THE RISK OF FAULTY ELECTRICS
The Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Heather Wheeler MP
said: “These new measures will reduce the risk of faulty electrical
equipment, giving people peace of mind and helping to keep them
safe in their homes.
“It will also provide clear guidance to landlords on who they should
be hiring to carry out these important electrical safety checks.”
ELECTRICAL CHECKS EVERY FIVE YEARS
The measures follow a consultation carried out a year ago into
electrical safety in the private rented sector.
In response to the consultation, the government announced last
July that regulations would be introduced requiring landlords to
undertake safety checks of their ‘electrical installations’ every
five years.
The government has defined these ‘electrical installations’ as ‘the
installations within a dwelling used for the supply of electricity’, and
cites ‘consumer units’ rather than individual electrical items such as
kettles as an example.
It says the new regulations requiring landlords to have electrical
installations in privately rented homes checked every five years will
be brought in ‘as soon as parliamentary time allows’.
Starting with new tenancies, it intends to introduce the new
requirements on a phased basis.
SUPPORTING TENANTS TO FEEL SAFE
The government says the measures build on action to drive up
standards in the private rented sector, helping people to feel safe at
home.
Ministers have also introduced new powers for councils to tackle any
rogue landlords renting out poor quality properties, including fines of
up to £30,000 and banning orders for landlords who do not comply.

Enjoy the first years
mortgage paid on our
homes this autumn
Home hunters wanting to move into a new-build
property in the coming months could have their
stamp duty paid or six months of their mortgage
paid thanks to a housebuilder’s new campaign.
Time to be Moved – launched by Bovis Homes – part
of the newly-formed Vistry Group – aims to take the
stress out of moving for those climbing or putting
their first foot on the housing ladder.
Buyers can also choose a flooring package from the
campaign, which can be used on two to fivebedroom
homes, alongside other incentives
including the extended key workers initiative and
the Government’s Help to Buy scheme.
Louise Macrae, regional marketing manager at Bovis
Homes, said: “We’re delighted to launch our Time
to be Moved campaign which promises to take the
hassle of the moving process away from home
buyers. Purchasers can choose from aeither 12
months the mortgage paid offer or a full home the
stamp duty or flooring packages. on offer. The
flooring option can also be used alongside the Help
to Buy scheme. The mortgage paid offer includes
almost all our homes across the region and the
stamp duty break is applicable on all our new
homes.
“The mortgage-paid offer will take buyers up to the
middle of December and beyond meaning they can
take some of the pressure out of Christmas this year
by being able to save more efficiently. Bovis Homes
properties are offered in great locations with open
green spaces and plenty of new walkways.

“They can be used for properties in our new housing
range, which offer more space with wider hallways,
open plan living and en suites and flexible living
space.”
For buyers who own their own home already, the
option to use Bovis Homes’ Smooth Move or Home
initiatives is available.
Bovis Homes’ Home Exchange sees the
housebuilder buying the customer's current property,
which means they can avoid all those estate agent
fees and time-consuming house chains. It also means
that purchasers can stay in their current house until
their new home is ready.
To part-exchange their home, a customer’s current
property must be valued at no more than 75 per cent
Using the Help to Buy – Equity Loan scheme, home
buyers need just a five per cent cash deposit, with
the Government providing an equity loan of up to
20 per cent of the value of the property being
bought. Purchasers then need to secure up to a 75
per cent mortgage.
Bovis Homes already runs an attractive purchasing
package for key workers, which has now been
extended until the end of 2020 to include all those
who have signed up for the recent NHS volunteer
scheme – as well as all those newly-classified by the
Government as key workers in the battle against the
coronavirus.
Properties in Bovis Homes’ new collection focus on
well-proportioned exteriors with a real sense of light
and flow on the inside. They are named after British
of the new Bovis Home they wish to purchase. Bovis
Homes will arrange for the buyer's property to be
valued, then make them an offer based on the
valuation.
Alternatively, buyers looking to sell their home can
take advantage of the housebuilder’s Smooth Move
scheme, which can save time and thousands of
pounds, with the home builder liaising with the
estate agent on the customer's behalf, as well as
paying the fees.
