“Are you Grant?” asked a red-headed, frecklefaced<br />

boy. “I’m Alex!” He and Grant shook hands.<br />

“I’ll bet you’re Christina?” a girl with long,<br />

blond hair asked. “I am Courtney.”<br />

“You don’t look like an Indian,” blurted Grant.<br />

“Grant!” Christina cried. “Don’t be so rude!”<br />

Courtney laughed. “It’s ok, Christina. Lots of<br />

people think that just because you have ancestors<br />

who were Native Americans, you will be dark-skinned<br />

and have dark hair in braids. As you can see,<br />

however, that’s just not true.”<br />

“When the colonists first came to<br />

<strong>Jamestown</strong>, they even thought the Indians dyed<br />

their skin,” Alex shared. “They thought you could<br />

rub the stuff off.”<br />

“That’s silly!” said Grant with a giggle.<br />
