Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Shoemaker family
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER PRINTS, PLEASE EMAIL PHOTO@EXITZERO.US
I
have about 90 minutes to write this week
(after my gym session, before my 5:30
Sunday gig) which is not a lot of time.
As such, I’ll be typing very fast so try to
keep up. May as well start with my Weekly
Weight Watch since I’m still glistening from
my 60-minute elliptical workout. I really wish
my deadline was on Tuesday since that has
habitually been my lightest day of the week, this
time hitting my previously stated goal of 225.5
before drifting back up to 225 on Sunday morning.
Considering all the (relative) junk I ate this
week, I can live with that. (Relative junk means a
couple of PB&Js, a bowl of tortilla chips or some
cereal, not the pizzas, hoagies and bags of fast
food from years past, though I did slip and have
a two cheeseburger meal from McDonald’s last
Monday and spent the rest of the day feeling like
I was going to die.) I stocked up on steaks, pork
chops, fruits and veg and expect to be sub-220
by next week. Or on Tuesday, at least.
I forgot my headphones for my workout
last Thursday, which is a total drag because
my “GYM” playlist makes the time go quicker.
Luckily, they sell cheap-o earbuds at Planet
Fitness so problem solved! Except my new
Android doesn’t have a headphone jack. D’oh!
(This is, so far, a very onbrand Terry O’Brien
experience.) So I ended having to plug right into
the house feed on the elliptical which was set to
The View on ABC. (Did you know those ladies
really hate Donald Trump?) Once I reached my
target heart rate (three seconds) I switched over
to Planet Fitness Radio, where I was equally
dismayed and heartened by the state of modern
pop music. The worst part of this was the Britney
Spears-Robin Thicke glitch that resulted in two
of their songs looping for about 20 minutes. It
was so bad I flipped back to The View to relax.
After my workouts I am WAP. (Wet and
Pasty.)
Listen, I said I was going to write quickly, I
didn’t say Iwas going to write well.
One thing that tanked my diet this week
was the absolutely delicious pupu platter sent
over to Tim Joyce and I (TNT) after our gig on
Friday night by Black Duck chef-owner Chris
Hubert. (I’m sure I’ve written more awkwardly
phrased sentences than that, I just can’t remember
when.) Ribs, wasabi spring rolls, shrimp
toast, dumplings, Asian slaw… just ridiculous.
(It was so good my wife ordered it the following
evening, with Chris refusing payment.)
We’ve had something of a symbiotic relationship
over there on Sunset Boulevard, with
Exit Zero, Black Duck and Viggiano’s all in close
proximity. It’s been our pleasure to sing for all of
you this season. And, if you know Tim Joyce, free
food is his favorite thing after free money (singing
is just something he does between meals,
sometimes during). Viggiano’s, if you’re reading,
KIDDING! It’s just my job to
cheapen these sincere moments
with stupid jokes. It was a lovely
gesture and deeply appreciated.
Everyone’s favorite LCMR
Our Tuesday artist, Shaun
LaBoy, showed up to work nearly
two hours before his gig last week.
I said, “Shaun, you know you’re
nearly two hours early for your gig
this week.” He said, “Yeah, I know,
but otherwise I would just be home
in bed.” Shaun… THAT’S THE
DREAM! Youth is seriously wasted
on the young. Shaun, along with
Camille Peruto and Nancy Malcun,
has added a shot of youthful vigor
to the EZFS music rotation. They
are perky, energetic and unfailingly
polite and I hate them very much.
You know who else I hate? The
person who cuts into our Exit Zero
bundles every week because they
just can’t wait until the shop opens
at 10am. I bet it’s a liberal.
Quote of the Week: “I’ll shove
anything in my mouth right now.”
A hungry female co-worker who
shall remain nameless lest she be
overly embarrassed. (It was Nicole
James.)
Anyone else notice how many
people these days have resting
bitch forehead?
teacher, Matt Suter, drove by EZFS
last week in this Darth Vader-esque
school bus, all black and pointy,
with a deranged smile on his face.
Though, to be fair, “deranged” is his
natural state of being. But if I was
you, schoolkids, I’d be extra good
this year, because I don’t think you
want to end up on that bus with
Mr Suter.
Move over, Randy and Wendy
Redelico, there’s a new stalker
on the block. Jim Faulkner (Jim
Staulkner?) of the Windsor Hotel
has been inundating me with
emails (four), talking about how
good my columns are and how well
I’ve raised my kids. I’m thinking of
getting a restraining order requiring
him to write at least two per
week. (Thanks for reaching out,
Jim.)
The greatest scene in any
movie ever is in The Way Back when
Ben Affleck absolutely melts down
on his basketball team for getting
clowned on. I’ve watched it probably
30 times and will definitely
watch it 30 more.
Does anyone really think Tenet, the latest movie from
there’s going to be one, let alone
three, Trump-Biden debates?
Made the mistake of going
cheap and buying Hefty plastic
drinking cups. Do yourselves a
favor and stick with the red Solo
cup. Why do I buy sdo many plastic
cups and paper plates? It’s
because nobody at my house does
the dishes except me, and since
I’m also the only one who does
the laundry, takes out the trash and
mows the lawn, I can’t always keep
up. Hence, plastic and paper. I may
work at an ocean-friendly restaurant,
but my house is Fukushima.
It’s a little over a 2.5-mile walk
to cut my grass.
Christopher Nolan, is beautifully
shot, features top-notch action
sequences, mind-bending special
effects and is perfectly cast
with Brian Washington (Denzel’s
son) and Robert Pattinson (future
Batman) in the leads. But I don’t
think it’s very good. Something
about reverse entropy (time traveling)
bullets, a Russian oligarch and
the end of the world. It was a lot like
the Alien proto-sequel, Prometheus
— interesting, engaging, bad.
I saw this movie in a movie
theater, which is a place people
used to go to watch movies,
and I did so with zero trepidation.
Sorry, this pandemic was over the
Imagine a journey 30 years in the making
that finally manages to “hit the right
chord.” Bill and Ted were iconic characters
in my post-college days. But the
humor of the first films fell flat on me.
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure started the
would-be trilogy in 1989. Either you got the
cheerful wackiness, or you didn’t. Bill (played
by Alex Winter), and Ted (played by Keanu
Reeves) were charming rock ‘n roller dudes
who go on an amazing time travel tour to visit
legendary historic figures — and act silly with
them.
Like I said, either you get it or you don’t.
Their second installment was in 1991.
And I must admit, I only caught parts of it.
Hey, I just had my first daughter and time
was precious — as in, “she’s napping, I need
to nap too!” Their “bogus journey” did not get
great reviews.
What happened in the 30 years after
could not be predicted. Well... maybe it could.
Winter goes on to work in a series of quirky
projects. Reeves makes one action hit after
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
another for several years — and maybe some
less action and less hit. The Matrix, John Wick,
Speed. The success of Reeves is so starkly different
from Winter, would he ever come back
to make a third installment?
Bill and Ted Face the Music is certainly silly,
but something is different. There is some
depth in their latest time travels. They meet
versions of themselves who are scoundrels,
prison-workout buff, and ultimately, elderly
and near death. And the two have daughters.
Thea (played by Samara Weaving) and Billie
(played by Brigette Lundy-Paine), go on their
own travels. They are fun to watch these two,
clearly passing the adventure to the next generation.
The plot is simple. Bill and Ted are frustrated
they never wrote the hit song that
prophecy said would save the world! Now they
travel through time to take the song from their
future selves. Well, duh... they chase that song
like a MacGuffin bouncing around with not a
thought toward time and space.
Can a song really save the world? More
than ever, I’d like to believe it can. I want
to believe anything can unify this divide. It
seems to be ripping through us like a gaping
tear in what is a surprisingly strong fabric of
decency and good will. What it leaves behind
is tattered hurt. When will we harmonize?
Maybe Bill and Ted can show us — or show
us how we can find our own way. Party on…
maybe with a little purpose this time. [Air guitar
solo here!] It could be...excellent!
I
am afraid to say, I need eyeglasses. After
all these years of ocular perfection, I realize
that perhaps the time has come. Oh,
there were little hints along the way:
when I did not win Cape May’s Willie Tell
Archery contest last summer after a decade
of holding the title, that was a clue (in my
defense, the chap under the Mcintosh DID
have a prominent Adam’s apple, and really,
once all the hoarse shrieking was done with,
he was able to make a full recovery). And
I did spend an hour lecturing my manservant
Kitchener on the importance of personal
grooming and shaving on a daily basis, before
he happened to wander past behind me and
politely asked why I was speaking to Igor the
Stuffed Bear.
Most vitally, I was feeding Young Albert
this week, and instead of giving him a tin
of Farmer Miggins Perfectly Fine Food For
Dogs of Uncertain Temperament (it’s mostly
oatmeal with a sheep’s head boiled in for protein,
so sheep and cattle dogs get all they need
without realizing that their charges are in fact
The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
lunch on hooves and getting any clever ideas)
I opened a can of hearts marinated in blood
meant for… well, never mind what they are
meant for (we have some unusual parties here
at The D’Catur Mansion). But I did not realize
my mistake until the smell wafted up, by
which time the scoundrel had wolfed the lot.
I need not tell you the effect a pound of raw
bloody meat had on the mood of an angry dog.
It was like The Hound of the Baskervilles (which
my old pal Conan Doyle happened to base on
the Young Albert of the day when he visited
Cape May one, and was savaged about the
ankles) but smaller and meaner and it took
the entire household staff and myself with
shields and brushes to force him outside until
he passed out from sheer anger and bloodlust.
But I cannot afford to make mistakes
like that, and have summoned an Optical
Doctor to measure me for the latest wearable
binoculars. I want something that can assist
in reading labels on medicine bottles (particularly
the tranquilizer I use in my blowgun
to sedate troublesome Shoebies) but also can
let me see in the ultra-violet and infra-red
spectrum, for my battles with creatures of the
night. Perhaps mirrored, too, so I can attend
city meetings and have a little nap with no
one noticing, and also because I adored the
TV show CHIPs. I also need rearview mirrors
and possibly a laser to help me deal with ninjas
and people from Wildwood, both of whom
tend to sneak up on a chap unawares, intent
on mischief. It’s not asking too much.
Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, enjoy virtual theater!
Humans like stories. Stories make us
Secrets by Candace O’Donnell explores the private
joys and sorrows of the tiny woman who
laugh and cry, but also make us speculate.
Would I have been brave, loyal,
once ruled over most of the world. The actress
situation? Would I have checked if
and her impotence — she could launch a war,
Juliet was really dead? Might I have stolen the
insurance money? Would I wait for Godot?
In normal times, theater feeds our need for
stories. Cape May Stage and the East Lynne
Theater Company would be filling our evenings
with laughter, tears and questions to
talk about with our fellow theater goers over
late night desserts. This year, both companies
Albert her “all in all,” but sought companionship
after his death. Modern mothers
and her inability to bond with her babies.
They’ll speculate how the modern understanding
of postpartum depression may have helped.
Now it begins for real, Fall, that is.
On September 1, Cape May Bird
Observatory initiated the 44th
year of the Cape May Hawk Count.
Situated on the Hawk Watch
Platform at Cape May Point State Park, this
cooperative effort between NJ Audubon, NJ
Forests and Parks and Swarovski will be conducted
daily until the end of November.
The public is welcome to join the counter
and interpretive interns under raptor filled
skies at the “Raptor Capital of North America.”
Cape May is a giant migrant trap, catching and
directing southbound birds to its terminus
where migrants face a hard decision. Cross 12
miles of open water or turn around and bypass
the bay. Some species, like the Peregrine
Falcon, think nothing of a 12-mile crossing
— adult male Peregrines are mostly pelagic.
They jump off breeding cliffs in Greenland
and their taloned feet never touch down until
they feel the tropical sun on the left side of
their face. Banding studies show that virtually
the entire Arctic population of Peregrines
flows down the Atlantic Seaboard. Hundreds
of Peregrines will be tallied in a typical year.
Merlin, another falcon, is a very common
migrant as is an American Kestrel, our smallest
but jauntiest raptor.
The hawk count takes the pulse of the
natural world — changes in raptor numbers
signal changes in the environment. Featured
raptors include kestrels, Sharp-shinned
Hawks, Osprey and Bald Eagle. Peregrine’s
and Merlins will peak at month’s end, then
the big, burly, cold-weather Buteos anchor
the count.
We on the platform are equal-opportunity
viewers. All migrating birds are grist for the
mill. Last year, a Cassin’s Kingbird flew by for
a first state record. You never know what will
pass, so everyday breaks with new promise.
One of the songbird migrants passing now
is Bobolink. Flying in large flocks, their mustard-colored
underparts catching the morning
sun, the “bink” notes of passing birds makes
the sky ring with the sound of ceramic wind
chimes. But don’t dawdle — Bobolinks will be
in South America by late September.
You’ll want to dress warmly and want
binoculars — Raptors fly high. As for social
distancing, the platform is large and birders as
a community are respectful of other visitors.
Stop by and witness one of nature’s greatest
spectacles. Over 50,000 hawks will be counted
this season. Take a seat and reap your share.
You can count on lots of help from the Cape
May Birding community who turn out daily.
Visit our market, stocked with fresh produce, farm-raised meats, eggs,
a selection of Hawk Haven wines...and beautiful fresh-cut flowers.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries
from gentle readers on all manner of
relationship quandaries, matters of
the heart and ethics. Sit back, enjoy
a cup of coffee and contemplate the
wisdom herein:
Dear Answer Lady
I am 19 years old and have worked very
hard this summer. I want to take some of the
money I made and get filler for my lips. They
are too thin, and I don’t like them. My father
thinks the idea is absurd and said I have to obey
or get out — it’s not the first time he’s threatened
that. I could move back in with my mother,
who doesn’t care if get my lips done. What do
you think? — Thin Lipped
Dear Thin
The Answer Lady’s eyes are rolling. So,
your goal is to look like Goldie Hawn when
you’re 30? You can’t think of anything else to
spend your hard-earned money on? The Answer
Lady does NOT think it is a good idea and
neither should you. You are perfect JUST as you
are and looking at yourself in the mirror and not
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
seeing that is the true flaw. We can assure you
Mr. Right will not care about your “thin” lips
but he might care that your priorities are a little
skewed. The Answer Lady suggests thinking
about it for another month. While you’re thinking,
make a trip to Cape May Peanut Butter Co.
and pick up a jar of vanilla peanut butter. Fix
yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and
enjoy. Maybe that bit of effort will realign your
self-image.
Dear Answer Lady
I am dating a very attractive woman who
likes to wear provocative clothing. Nothing
outrageous — a little cleavage and tight jeans.
I love that guys turn and look, but she gets
insulted if an older guy says something when
she’s working as a hostess at a restaurant. I
don’t want to tell her how to dress because I like
it but do you think she should tone it down for
work? Would that be an easy fix? — Confused
Dear Confused
Tough one. No matter what the attire, men
should not — as the Victorians would say — take
liberties. She has a certain look that both of you
are happy with, so what to do? Perhaps the best
way to handle the unwarranted attention, is to
ignore it or deflect it, especially if their wives or
girlfriends are with them. Include them in on
the “conversation,” as in, “OH, your husband
just said he likes my top. I bought mine at Lace
Silhouettes. Tell them I sent you.” If she can
keep an even temper and level the playing field
by calling attention to their predatory behavior,
she will be the victor in so many ways.
PICO is an active boy who loves to be with
people. He loves to run around the yard but
quickly returns to his human for a brief pat.
He has excellent leash skills and enjoys long
walks. Pico lived with children in his previous
home and is very affectionate. He would do
best in an active household with a family willing
to continue his training.
MS. WRINKLES is a gentle, 40-pound Shar
Pei who came to the shelter as a stray. She
came with Demodectic mange that is not contagious,
but treatable. She may need entropion
surgery in the future and needs a lot of
love. Ms. Wrinkles is learning leash skills and
loves attention. She would be best in a home
that is willing to work with her skin condition.
EASY is an athletic and active four-year-old
boy. He loves to play and chase balls in the
yard. Easy is startled by loud noises and hides
in the bathtub during thunderstorms. He has
excellent leash skills and would be best in a
home with no other dogs, cats, or children. He
needs an active home and one willing to continue
his training.
Happy Birthday Fran!
While we love helping our clients with their real estate needs, our
greatest joy comes from our sister Frances Wilsey! This week we would
like to to celebrate her and enlist your help. As many of you know,
Frannie has Williams Syndrome. We have been extra careful keeping
Frannie safe during this tough time, which means our social butterfly
has been missing her friends and family. Her 59 th birthday is just around
the corner (October 10!) so we wanted to do something super special.
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV
Fran loves her birthday, especially the cake, presents and most of all, a party
with her friends. Since we can’t do that this year, we wanted to ask everyone
to send her a birthday card! It can be handmade or short and sweet. She gets
so excited receiving mail so this will provide her with a fun activity and show
her how much she is loved. Even if you’ve never met Fran, she adores every
person she meets, and it would mean a lot to her. We are hoping to receive 59
cards for her 59 th birthday! Thank you for making this a special one for our girl.
