THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
GET READY
At LHU, you’re more than a number. Our personal, one-on-one approach
puts a solid focus on your needs as a student. Grow your confidence.
Develop studying and learning skills that will help you pursue rewarding
careers across a range of industries. Prepare for the demands of the
21st-century job market.
STUDY ABROAD
It can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
When you study abroad, you’ll get to know
other cultures. See unique landscapes.
Hear new languages. Choose from over
30 global partner nations—from China to
Germany, Mexico to South Korea, and many
countries in between. You don’t have to
speak another language to study abroad,
though it’s a great chance to learn one!
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Many of today’s employers want new hires with
real-world experience. The heart of our academic
approach, LHU requires every student to take part
in hands-on, experiential learning. This includes
advanced instructional labs, research, field
placements, internships, and student teaching.
On average, 98% of LHU grads find a job, join
the military, or go to graduate school within six
months of graduation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Beyond the classroom you’ll have exciting
opportunities to get involved and give back.
Pursue rewarding community-service and
service-learning projects through our Global
MountainServe Center for Community Service.
Here, you’ll find a range of activities, including
national community-service scholarships,
community-service student-worker positions,
alternative break trips, and resources for
professional development. Your community
work can take place locally, nationally,
and internationally.
LHU GLOBAL HONORS
PROGRAM
If you love to go the extra mile, challenge yourself
academically, and develop serious leadership
skills, consider the competitive LHU Global
Honors Program (GHP) on LHU’s main campus.
This outstanding program invites students into
the most advanced academic programs offered,
with a chance to also study abroad. Please note:
LHU’s honors orientation takes place just prior
to freshman orientation, the week before classes
begin. This helps honors freshmen move in
earlier than other students, and get comfortable
meeting program peers and mentors.
HONORS RESEARCH COMPETITION
Showcasing students’ academic rigor, creativity,
and innovation, this annual research competition
is judged by faculty representing diverse disciplines.
Cash prizes are awarded to the top entries in
each category, and projects are displayed in the
Honors House.
GLOBAL THEME
This new yearly initiative helps us highlight, study,
and call attention to serious issues of worldwide
consequence. The Global Theme is emphasized
in honors courses, independent honors projects,
and through high-impact learning, such as guest
speakers, or field trips to relevant venues.
HONORS LIAISONS
Faculty representing 12 distinct programs serve as
honors liaisons. They work closely with honors
students, supporting them in the classroom
and beyond.
SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECTS
Our culminating academic requirement, through
the Honors Capstone Project, students work
closely with a professor. They design and develop
a project that demonstrates mastery in a specific
discipline (or multiple disciplines). Students have
tackled educational, historical, political, and
scientific questions, while others have pursued
arts projects, theatre, and writing.
HONORS COUNCIL
A student-leadership group, the Council plays a
significant role in helping us carry out our core
mission, organized around four pillars: expand
knowledge; establish leaders; enhance community;
enrich global understanding.
HONORS CONFERENCES
Each year, the Global Honors Program supports
travel for up to ten students’, usually to the Northeast
Regional Honors Council’s annual conference.
This valuable experience requires students to
develop a professional proposal, be accepted
by conference reviewers, and publicly present
their work.
LEADERSHIP
The Global Honors Program helps students excel
within, and beyond, the classroom. We offer
leadership opportunities, including the chance
to work as a Student Associate Director, join our
Global Honors Admissions Team (or “A-Team”), or
serve our robust freshman-mentoring program.
Students also take on leadership roles across
campus, serving as club presidents, or guiding
community-service initiatives.
As an honors student, you will graduate with the
prestigious designation of University Global Honors
(if you study abroad, you can earn a University
Global Honors with Distinction). An additional
application is required. Be sure to apply early.
Find out more here: www.lockhaven.edu/honors/.
ARMY ROTC
If you’d like to join the U S. Army, the Reserve Officer
Training Corps (ROTC) can give you a head start
while you’re earning a college degree. You may be
eligible for tuition reimbursement. And you may be
allowed to earn extra income while training for a
leadership role in the military upon graduation.

ALUMNI STORIES
OUR GREATEST
ASSET IS YOU
Despite his height, Austin was determined
to play football at LHU. After graduating
with honors, this Pennsylvania native
was hired by Major League Baseball’s
Washington Nationals for their sales team.
“I owe LHU everything,” Heinbaugh said,
beaming about his sports-admin education,
and how prepared he was to work right out
of school.
- Austin Heinbaugh, 2018
B.S. Sport Administration
We’ve made sure countless students were ready and
able to pursue rewarding careers. Here’s a snapshot
of what some of our graduates had to say about their
experience at LHU.
From junior high on, Alabama native
Joshua Miller had his heart set on a
great college with a small-town feel.
LHU was “the perfect fit,” he said.
“Everything I was looking for and more.”
Since graduating, Miller has traveled
the nation, working with politicians
and political organizations, including
those on Capital Hill.
- Joshua Miller, 2010
B.S. in Political Science and International Affairs; minor
in theater
A devoted medical professional, Colby
Welshans returned to his roots. He works
as a physician’s assistant near LHU, in
his old neighborhood. His medical path
wasn’t a straight shot. Yet, once he chose
the PA program, his professors changed
his life. “They were knowledgeable and
approachable, and had practiced medicine
for years.”
- Colby Welshans, 2014
Completed the Physician’s Assistant program
“ Lock Haven is a family. It’s not somewhere
you go, get your degree, and peace out,”
Wynn said. Once a forward for the women’s
basketball team, this Pennsylvania native is
the Athletic Director and health teacher at
Globe Unified School District in Globe, AZ.
She credits caring, focused professors for
helping her land this plumb job.
- Evelyn Wynn, 2010
B.S. in Health and Phys Ed
