What a year!<br />

First, we welcomed a trio of riders to<br />

the team. Many will recognise Sofiane<br />

Sehili. One of the era’s foremost<br />

endurance racers, last year he won a<br />

slew of epic events including the Inca<br />

Divide and Italy Divide races, before<br />

kicking off 2020 by claiming the Atlas<br />

Mountain Race and taking a podium<br />

at the Hope 1000 and the Three Peaks<br />

Bike Race.<br />

Less competitive, but just as hooked on<br />

adventure, our second recruit Andy Cox<br />

is the creator of the European Divide<br />

Trail, an 8,000-kilometre bikepacking<br />

route from the Barents Sea in Norway<br />

to the lighthouse at Cabo de São<br />

Vicente, Portugal.<br />

Finally, our last new member Federico<br />

Cabrera is a rider on a mission.<br />

Over six years he’s ridden more than<br />

30,000-kilometres through Bolivia,<br />

Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, and<br />

Argentina. Along the way, he’s donated<br />

over 500 printed portraits along with<br />

solar lamps and water filters to the<br />

people he’s met.<br />

The early season saw our established<br />

squad busy as well. Having raced all<br />

winter, Gosse van der Meer took the<br />

UK National Cyclocross Trophy home<br />

with him in his campervan.<br />

Gaëlle Bojko also began her year<br />

early by riding the frozen expanse of<br />

Siberia’s Lake Baikal, while on a more<br />

intimate scale, Clem Shovel and his<br />

seven-year-old son Lubin set out on a<br />

first bikepacking adventure. Spending<br />

the night out in the woods, they<br />

documented their experience in the<br />

short film The Analogue Kids.<br />

We even found time to run our own<br />

race series, the NRW Cross Cup i n<br />

North Rhine-Westphalia.<br />

Releasing a crop of fresh bikes, the<br />

design team were hard at work too.<br />

Amongst the products of their labour<br />

are our two new Munroe cargo bikes<br />

- both of which make transporting<br />

yourself and your stuff around town<br />

easier than ever.<br />

Introduced last year, our trail-going<br />

Cale mountain bike also gains a<br />

sibling in the form of the lightweight<br />

Cale AL, while the Hook EXT range<br />

expands with a titanium frameset<br />

option. Everything was set for a long<br />

summer of riding.<br />

But then came something that changed<br />

all our plans. As everything went into<br />

lockdown, the world we love exploring<br />

suddenly became smaller and scarier.<br />

All our events got rescheduled or<br />

cancelled. With a record number<br />

of entries, the Tuscany Trail was<br />

postponed, while the Dirty Boar had to<br />

be cancelled. As did new additions,<br />

The Distance and Veneto Trail.<br />

Yet as things returned to something<br />

like normal, bikes continued to provide<br />

an escape, and for some a safe way to<br />

return to work. Eventually allowed out<br />

to blow off some steam, we hope to<br />

see you all soon - safe, happy, and out<br />

riding your bikes.<br />

Based around an adaptable steel frame, our Arise range is ready<br />

to follow whatever road you point it down. Our simplest bike,<br />

this year all models benefit from updated geometry and sliding<br />

dropouts. At the same time, size-matched 650B or 700C wheels<br />

now also ensure handling is kept consistent for all riders. First in<br />

line, the low-maintenance Arise uses a single-speed drivetrain to<br />

keep servicing to a minimum. The Arise Geared adds a wide-ratio<br />

9-speed cassette for hillier journeys, while a front platform rack<br />

provides a simple way to carry your stuff. Finally, the distanceorientated<br />

Arise Tour sports racks, mudguards, and dynamo lights<br />

to help it escape far beyond the limits of the city.<br />

The Hook’s hoodlum tendencies given free rein. Using a Columbus steel frame, dedicated carbon fork, and lively 27.5-inch wheels,<br />

the EXT can batter through territory out-of-bounds to other drop handlebar bikes. Backed by Sram’s 1 x 11 Rival groupset, this<br />

Building the<br />

European<br />

Divide Trail<br />

What made you decide to hit the<br />

road?<br />

After years of working in bike shops,<br />

I needed to find another way to live.<br />

I yearned for something other than<br />

the nine to five grind, and bike travel<br />

offers that. So I packed up what I<br />

thought I needed and left. Carrying<br />

around your life on two wheels and<br />

dragging it up every hill makes you<br />

realise how little you actually want to<br />

bring with you. It strips life down to<br />

the essentials.<br />

Where did the idea for the<br />

European Divide Trail come from?<br />

What are the criteria for the roads<br />

or tracks you choose?<br />

Not too rough, not too much climbing,<br />

but wild and beautiful at the same time.<br />

Avoiding big cities if possible and<br />

linking nature reserves and national<br />

parks together. I tried to find the less<br />

well-known places with fewer tourists,<br />

the places the locals go.<br />

How does the European Divide<br />

Trail differ from existing longdistance<br />

bikepacking routes?<br />

It’s less technically demanding than<br />

I wanted to make a mostly trafficfree<br />

way to tour Europe. Inspired<br />

by the Great Divide mountain bike<br />

route in North America. I wanted<br />

to create something similar with<br />

a European twist. Something to<br />

showcase the variety of landscapes<br />

and cultures, but that didn’t require<br />

a transatlantic flight to enjoy.<br />

How did you conduct your<br />

research and planning?<br />

Our new team rider Andy Cox<br />

quit his job, rented out his house,<br />

and hit the road. Since then he’s<br />

devoted his time to building the<br />

European Divide Trail. Starting<br />

from the Barents Sea in the<br />

Arctic Circle and finishing at a<br />

lighthouse on the southern tip<br />

of Portugal, the 8,000-kilometre<br />

route he’s created aims to cross<br />

Europe in a way that’s wild, but<br />

remains navigable all year round.<br />

I started linking established<br />

bikepacking routes around Europe<br />

but found many were too demanding<br />

for long-term travel. Instead, I’ve<br />

pieced together routes that better<br />

fit the bill. Looking where locals<br />

ride through Strava heat-maps,<br />

using Wikiloc, following other<br />

bikepackers on Instagram, and<br />

studying dangerousroads.org have all<br />

helped. Still, nothing beats seeing<br />

a stretch of dirt road on a map and<br />

then going and riding it. Recently<br />

I’ve been using Komoot the most as<br />

it shows what surfaces you’re likely<br />

to encounter and how much climbing<br />

is involved.<br />

some, with less pushing or carrying of<br />

your bike. This means fewer footpaths<br />

and more dirt roads, mostly so you<br />

can ride day after day on such tracks.<br />

Technical trails are tough to ride all<br />

the time with the extra equipment you<br />

need for long-term travel.<br />

Which sections worked well, and<br />

which have you had to amend?<br />

Iberia and Scandinavia have a huge<br />

amount of dirt roads, less population<br />

and smaller cities, so they were easier<br />

to link things together in. France and<br />

Germany have been the most difficult.<br />

Both required several attempts just to<br />

find viable options. That’s why I’ve<br />

used more existing bikepacking routes<br />

and cycle tracks in these areas.<br />

You’re a keen photographer,<br />

which bits of the trail are most<br />

photogenic?<br />

For the variety of landscapes and<br />

generally good weather, eastern Spain<br />

has been the most spectacular place<br />

to ride and document. Also, central<br />

Sweden has the wildest places and<br />

riding which helps to create a definite<br />

mood through photos.<br />

How does it feel to invest so much<br />

into creating something with no<br />

tangible form?<br />

On this journey, I’ve tried to inspire<br />

others to step away from the norm and<br />

go exploring. Creating routes is a way<br />

to give something to the community.<br />

It’s all been self-funded, so I’ve no<br />

reason to do it other than my love of<br />

bike travel. I’m no racer, just a guy who<br />

likes to explore by bike, and as I’ve got<br />

no dependents and plenty of time on<br />

my hands, I thought I’d put together<br />

something for more than just myself to<br />

enjoy.<br />

Which bit of Europe has seemed<br />

the most distant to where you grew<br />

up?<br />

The east is definitely the most foreign<br />

feeling place to me; Poland, Estonia,<br />

Latvia, and Lithuania. Being from the<br />

UK I grew up being relatively familiar<br />

with the feeling of western Europe<br />

through TV and culture, but the Russian<br />

influence on the eastern countries is<br />

quite different and surprising.<br />

What’s the remotest section of the<br />

European Divide?<br />

In the far north, there are sections of up<br />

to 150km without any shops or towns.<br />

Plus there are signs of large carnivores<br />

on the trails like bears and wolves which<br />

make you realise how wild it is. It’s<br />

quite a change from the central sections<br />

where you might pass through several<br />

towns a day at some points.<br />

You’ve been looking for somewhere<br />

to settle down, any idea where<br />

that’ll be?<br />

I’m not sure I’ll settle after this, but<br />

perhaps for the colder part of the year,<br />

I’ll go to Catalonia if I can find a<br />

quiet place to build a wooden cabin. I’d<br />

still love to travel for several months a<br />

year. I know the wanderlust will never<br />

leave me. Perhaps working as a cycling<br />

guide or just adding to the European<br />

Divide Trail could keep me happy<br />

for many years to come. I also feel it<br />

needs to go to northern Scotland and<br />

Istanbul in the future, so that’ll keep<br />

me busy for a while yet.<br />

A bike for getting out into the world, our Beyond range has<br />

pedalled its way to some of the remotest bits of the planet. With<br />

size-matched wheels and huge flared bars, the original Beyond<br />

proved able to plot a steady course over uncharted terrain. Since<br />

joined by the Beyond+ and Beyond+ ADV, the wider tyres and<br />

flat-handlebars on these models open up even more previously<br />

unrideable routes. Combining design elements from both touring<br />

Hi Sofiane. Tell us how you got<br />

into cycling?<br />

I used to commute when I worked<br />

at a magazine in Paris. Then they<br />

moved and I had a longer commute.<br />

That’s when I started getting into<br />

cycling. I’d try to get across town as<br />

fast as possible. Then, in 2010 I went<br />

travelling in Asia. I’d been taking<br />

buses and trains, but in Laos, I decided<br />

to buy a bike. I ended up riding it<br />

7,000 kilometres. When I got back<br />

I tried to get a job in an office, but<br />

I couldn’t do it. After all that time<br />

outside I found it too claustrophobic,<br />

so I became a bike messenger.<br />

When did you decide you wanted<br />

to race?<br />

a fulltime professional bikepacker.<br />

Although I’d still probably make<br />

a little less than I do as a bike<br />

messenger.<br />

What’s the toughest event you’ve<br />

raced?<br />

Different factors make a race hard,<br />

like the route, the competition, or the<br />

weather. One race that left me really<br />

beaten-up was the Italy Divide. The<br />

route is tough, then James Hayden and<br />

Jay Petervary turned up. At the start, I<br />

was dehydrated, but by the end, I found<br />

myself caught in a snowstorm. Altitude<br />

can also be a huge factor. At the Inca<br />

Divide, some sections climb to 5,000<br />

metres.<br />

From dropping parcels around<br />

Paris to delivering at the world’s<br />

toughest adventure races,<br />

messenger and racer Sofiane is our<br />

newest team member. With wins<br />

at BikingMan, Inca Divide, Italy<br />

Divide, and the Atlas Mountain<br />

Race, he’s rapidly established<br />

himself as one of the sports<br />

preeminent competitors. In a rare<br />

static moment, we caught up with<br />

him to find out about his life and<br />

travels.<br />

In 2014 I rode the Great Divide<br />

route from Alberta, Canada to New<br />

Mexico. It was my first time offroad,<br />

and it was far harder than<br />

I’d imagined. To start with I was<br />

miserable and it felt like I was<br />

making no progress. But after a<br />

few weeks, I settled into a rhythm.<br />

Having toured the route, I was<br />

curious to see how fast I could race<br />

it. In 2016 I went back to compete<br />

and came third.<br />

Since then you’ve won a ton<br />

of races. Can you now make a<br />

living from racing?<br />

I never imagined there’d be any<br />

money in the sport. Until recently<br />

I’ve always paid for everything.<br />

That changed after I won the Atlas<br />

Mountain Race. I’d had kit from<br />

brands before, but now they’ll<br />

sometimes come with a bit of money<br />

for flights and accommodation. I<br />

couldn’t stop working yet, but it<br />

wouldn’t take much more to become<br />

At one point I was going uphill<br />

for seven hours. It’s so remote that<br />

resupply is tricky too, and at night<br />

it’s impossible to ride because of the<br />

cold. Even in August, the tops of the<br />

passes can get down to -15°C. It means<br />

winning can come down to who’s at the<br />

bottom of the pass when it’s time to<br />

sleep.<br />

How would you describe your<br />

approach to racing?<br />

I just don’t stop. I know if I can keep<br />

going, I don’t have to be the fastest.<br />

I remember an interview where Lael<br />

Wilcox said she didn’t stop to eat. It<br />

was a revelation. Why would you sit and<br />

enjoy a pizza? It’s a race.<br />

When I resupply, I’m in and out, and<br />

when I see tarmac, that’s when I eat.<br />

My advice is not to look at your average<br />

speed. Instead, look at your elapsed<br />

time and your moving time and aim to<br />

get them as close as possible.<br />

How much of being a great<br />

endurance racer is in the legs, and<br />

how much is in the head?<br />

The mental aspect is important,<br />

but all of us that win bike races are<br />

accomplished cyclists. At some point in<br />

an ultra race, everyone is going to be<br />

tired. Then it becomes what can your<br />

legs do after too many kilometres and<br />

not much sleep. Off-road racing is so<br />

hard, I think the mental element is even<br />

more important, especially with the<br />

need to resupply or spend time sleeping<br />

out.<br />

Road Mountain Race is also on my<br />

bucket list. I’ve been to Central<br />

Asia and the scenery is a big draw,<br />

but also the emptiness. Whether it’s<br />

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan<br />

or Tajikistan, there’s never a lot<br />

of people. I told myself I would go<br />

back to Kyrgyzstan, and the Silk<br />

Road Mountain race would be a great<br />

opportunity. The route takes you places<br />

very few people will have seen, and it<br />

looks like a proper adventure.<br />

What about pro road cyclists<br />

trying adventure racing?<br />

Former Grand Tour racer Christian<br />

Meier raced the Atlas Mountain Race.<br />

He’s the real deal, so looking at it<br />

selfishly, if I’m competing against such<br />

an accomplished athlete, it proves our<br />

sport is serious. I think it’s positive.<br />

Then again, if things start to shift and<br />

it’s suddenly more attractive to current<br />

pros because there’s more money, maybe<br />

people will be attracted for the wrong<br />

reasons. As amateurs, all of us come for<br />

the same reason. It’s a fraternity, and<br />

we have the same ethics. I can’t imagine<br />

any of the current top riders cheating,<br />

because it’s not just about winning. I<br />

don’t want to see that change.<br />

What race has captured your<br />

imagination for the future?<br />

On my calendar this year was the<br />

Highland 550 in Scotland. The Silk<br />

Broadcasting<br />

the Beach<br />

When our video editor and<br />

photographer was forced to leave<br />

his flat in Cologne, it provided the<br />

impetus he and his girlfriend needed<br />

to hit the road. A former bandmate of<br />

<strong>Bombtrack</strong> founder Manuel Schuerholz,<br />

Marvin has been instrumental in<br />

creating our videos. Currently<br />

operating beachside in Portugal, the<br />

team’s riders send over their raw<br />

footage, and Marvin spits out the<br />

finished edit. All he needs is a laptop,<br />

wifi, and a few nearby waves.<br />

In between surf sessions, we caught up<br />

with him during lockdown to find out<br />

how he ended up making films about<br />

bikes in the back of a van.<br />

“I studied jazz piano and was a musician<br />

for ten years,” explains Marvin. “At<br />

one point me and Manuel were in a<br />

band together. The management asked if<br />

I would take a GoPro and film a tour<br />

blog. I asked if I could do the editing<br />

too. Manuel saw it and asked me to do<br />

something for <strong>Bombtrack</strong>”.<br />

surprising amount of space, all that’s<br />

needed for work is a camera, laptop,<br />

headphones and stable wifi. “Or at<br />

least a SIM card with lots of gigabytes of<br />

data,” says Marvin.<br />

Having no fixed address, hours, or<br />

boss also allows Marvin the freedom to<br />

organise his time.<br />

“I don’t have a typical workday,” he<br />

says. “It’s one of the things I enjoy the<br />

most. No day is the same. Somedays I’ll<br />

work all day, to the extent I forget to<br />

eat if I’m really involved in a project.<br />

Other days I don’t work at all and just<br />

go surfing or play guitar. I’ve never been<br />

conventionally employed, so I don’t know<br />

what it’s like working nine to five”.<br />

That was five years ago. Having<br />

since taught himself advanced<br />

photography and video editing skills<br />

via Youtube, Marvin is now responsible<br />

for <strong>Bombtrack</strong>’s videos which have<br />

been seen by over a million people<br />

worldwide.<br />

However, rather than making them in<br />

a conventional editing suite, like our<br />

riders, Marvin’s studio is also totally<br />

mobile.<br />

“Two years ago me and my girlfriend got<br />

kicked out of our flat and decided not to<br />

get another. We spent time crashing on<br />

friends’ sofas. Then last year I got a van,<br />

which I converted, and now we’re living<br />

on the road”.<br />

footage shot on-the-fly during<br />

races or in remote locations looking<br />

consistent.<br />

“Normally the riders aren’t shooting<br />

with a crew, so I’ll try and get them to<br />

be on-point with the camera settings.<br />

In the beginning, I had to tell them off<br />

a lot. Sometimes the shots would look<br />

different or have come from different<br />

cameras, which made them hard to edit<br />

together. Now the team has got pretty<br />

good at filming, so it’s a bit easier”.<br />

At the end of most trips, Marvin<br />

gets delivered a bundle of footage to<br />

construct a story out of. Last year<br />

this included editing highlights from<br />

the racing at the Dirty Reiver, a short<br />

about our own NRW Cross Cup series,<br />

a travelogue covering the team’s trip<br />

to the Tuscany Trail.<br />

Sometimes Marvin likes to pick<br />

up the camera himself, like he did<br />

with all the 2020 bike’s studioclips<br />

or the beautiful “The Analog Kids”<br />

documentary about Clem Shovel and<br />

his son Lubin. “A while back I went with<br />

Marc Mauer to Cappadocia in Turkey<br />

for the first “A Journey Beyond” film.<br />

I think that film is still my favourite.<br />

Making it was such an event for us”.<br />

Despite never once having been<br />

camping, adapting to life on the road<br />

has proved relatively easy. “Besides<br />

work, for having fun the most important<br />

items are my surfboard and skateboard.<br />

Although I’m a pianist, carrying around<br />

a piano is impossible, so I’ve been<br />

learning guitar too. I also like to cook<br />

every day and visit local markets for<br />

ingredients”.<br />

Now settled into van life, one of the<br />

few remaining challenges is keeping<br />

everything charged. “There have been<br />

occasions where I’ve had to drive around<br />

to fill the batteries. At the moment, if<br />

I need something charged quickly I’ll<br />

usually go to a cafe and ask to plug it<br />

i n ” .<br />

Soon Marvin’s mobile studio should be<br />

even more self-sufficient, thanks to a<br />

new solar panel on the roof. Currently<br />

staying on the coast twenty minutes<br />

from Lisbon, there’s easily enough<br />

sunshine to power the electronics<br />

he needs to keep the <strong>Bombtrack</strong><br />

production studio running.<br />

“When I started I had no idea if this<br />

would work,” explains Marvin. “But<br />

at the moment I’m spending less money,<br />

so it’s actually easier to make a living<br />

editing on the road than it would be<br />

doing so from a flat”.<br />

When we spoke, Marvin was remotely<br />

editing “ Nine Miles” , our designer<br />

Marko’s film about cycling during<br />

lockdown. It should be released by the<br />

time you’re reading this.<br />

Once he’s free to move again, Marvin<br />

isn’t sure where he’ll go. With plentiful<br />

surf breaks, good food, and friendly<br />

locals. he and his girlfriend are in<br />

no hurry to leave the beach and get a<br />

regular job.<br />

“If I could trade my old life for this one,<br />

I’d definitely choose this”.<br />
