What a year!

First, we welcomed a trio of riders to

the team. Many will recognise Sofiane

Sehili. One of the era’s foremost

endurance racers, last year he won a

slew of epic events including the Inca

Divide and Italy Divide races, before

kicking off 2020 by claiming the Atlas

Mountain Race and taking a podium

at the Hope 1000 and the Three Peaks

Bike Race.

Less competitive, but just as hooked on

adventure, our second recruit Andy Cox

is the creator of the European Divide

Trail, an 8,000-kilometre bikepacking

route from the Barents Sea in Norway

to the lighthouse at Cabo de São

Vicente, Portugal.

Finally, our last new member Federico

Cabrera is a rider on a mission.

Over six years he’s ridden more than

30,000-kilometres through Bolivia,

Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, and

Argentina. Along the way, he’s donated

over 500 printed portraits along with

solar lamps and water filters to the

people he’s met.

The early season saw our established

squad busy as well. Having raced all

winter, Gosse van der Meer took the

UK National Cyclocross Trophy home

with him in his campervan.

Gaëlle Bojko also began her year

early by riding the frozen expanse of

Siberia’s Lake Baikal, while on a more

intimate scale, Clem Shovel and his

seven-year-old son Lubin set out on a

first bikepacking adventure. Spending

the night out in the woods, they

documented their experience in the

short film The Analogue Kids.

We even found time to run our own

race series, the NRW Cross Cup i n

North Rhine-Westphalia.

Releasing a crop of fresh bikes, the

design team were hard at work too.

Amongst the products of their labour

are our two new Munroe cargo bikes

- both of which make transporting

yourself and your stuff around town

easier than ever.

Introduced last year, our trail-going

Cale mountain bike also gains a

sibling in the form of the lightweight

Cale AL, while the Hook EXT range

expands with a titanium frameset

option. Everything was set for a long

summer of riding.

But then came something that changed

all our plans. As everything went into

lockdown, the world we love exploring

suddenly became smaller and scarier.

All our events got rescheduled or

cancelled. With a record number

of entries, the Tuscany Trail was

postponed, while the Dirty Boar had to

be cancelled. As did new additions,

The Distance and Veneto Trail.

Yet as things returned to something

like normal, bikes continued to provide

an escape, and for some a safe way to

return to work. Eventually allowed out

to blow off some steam, we hope to

see you all soon - safe, happy, and out

riding your bikes.

Based around an adaptable steel frame, our Arise range is ready

to follow whatever road you point it down. Our simplest bike,

this year all models benefit from updated geometry and sliding

dropouts. At the same time, size-matched 650B or 700C wheels

now also ensure handling is kept consistent for all riders. First in

line, the low-maintenance Arise uses a single-speed drivetrain to

keep servicing to a minimum. The Arise Geared adds a wide-ratio

9-speed cassette for hillier journeys, while a front platform rack

provides a simple way to carry your stuff. Finally, the distanceorientated

Arise Tour sports racks, mudguards, and dynamo lights

to help it escape far beyond the limits of the city.

A fast bike for all kinds of riding. The Hook might have been

designed as a gravel racer, but that doesn’t stop it also being a

perfect tourer, commuter, or even summer-season cyclocross bike.

True to the original formula, the standard Hook provides a smooth

steel frame designed to fit 700C wheels and tyres. Pushing the

limits of what you can tackle, the radical EXT models use robust

and nimble 27.5-inch wheels. Available in steel and carbon, both

offer uprated strength and manoeuvrability. New for this year, the

titanium Hook EXT Ti frameset also now provides the freedom to

Building the

European

Divide Trail

What made you decide to hit the

road?

After years of working in bike shops,

I needed to find another way to live.

I yearned for something other than

the nine to five grind, and bike travel

offers that. So I packed up what I

thought I needed and left. Carrying

around your life on two wheels and

dragging it up every hill makes you

realise how little you actually want to

bring with you. It strips life down to

the essentials.

Where did the idea for the

European Divide Trail come from?

What are the criteria for the roads

or tracks you choose?

Not too rough, not too much climbing,

but wild and beautiful at the same time.

Avoiding big cities if possible and

linking nature reserves and national

parks together. I tried to find the less

well-known places with fewer tourists,

the places the locals go.

How does the European Divide

Trail differ from existing longdistance

bikepacking routes?

It’s less technically demanding than

I wanted to make a mostly trafficfree

way to tour Europe. Inspired

by the Great Divide mountain bike

route in North America. I wanted

to create something similar with

a European twist. Something to

showcase the variety of landscapes

and cultures, but that didn’t require

a transatlantic flight to enjoy.

How did you conduct your

research and planning?

Our new team rider Andy Cox

quit his job, rented out his house,

and hit the road. Since then he’s

devoted his time to building the

European Divide Trail. Starting

from the Barents Sea in the

Arctic Circle and finishing at a

lighthouse on the southern tip

of Portugal, the 8,000-kilometre

route he’s created aims to cross

Europe in a way that’s wild, but

remains navigable all year round.

I started linking established

bikepacking routes around Europe

but found many were too demanding

for long-term travel. Instead, I’ve

pieced together routes that better

fit the bill. Looking where locals

ride through Strava heat-maps,

using Wikiloc, following other

bikepackers on Instagram, and

studying dangerousroads.org have all

helped. Still, nothing beats seeing

a stretch of dirt road on a map and

then going and riding it. Recently

I’ve been using Komoot the most as

it shows what surfaces you’re likely

to encounter and how much climbing

is involved.

your bike. This means fewer footpaths

and more dirt roads, mostly so you

can ride day after day on such tracks.

Technical trails are tough to ride all

the time with the extra equipment you

need for long-term travel.

Which sections worked well, and

which have you had to amend?

Iberia and Scandinavia have a huge

amount of dirt roads, less population

and smaller cities, so they were easier

to link things together in. France and

Germany have been the most difficult.

Both required several attempts just to

find viable options. That’s why I’ve

used more existing bikepacking routes

and cycle tracks in these areas.

You’re a keen photographer,

which bits of the trail are most

photogenic?

For the variety of landscapes and

generally good weather, eastern Spain

has been the most spectacular place

to ride and document. Also, central

Sweden has the wildest places and

riding which helps to create a definite

mood through photos.

How does it feel to invest so much

into creating something with no

tangible form?

On this journey, I’ve tried to inspire

others to step away from the norm and

go exploring. Creating routes is a way

to give something to the community.

It’s all been self-funded, so I’ve no

reason to do it other than my love of

bike travel. I’m no racer, just a guy who

likes to explore by bike, and as I’ve got

no dependents and plenty of time on

my hands, I thought I’d put together

something for more than just myself to

enjoy.

Which bit of Europe has seemed

the most distant to where you grew

up?

The east is definitely the most foreign

feeling place to me; Poland, Estonia,

Latvia, and Lithuania. Being from the

UK I grew up being relatively familiar

with the feeling of western Europe

through TV and culture, but the Russian

influence on the eastern countries is

quite different and surprising.

What’s the remotest section of the

European Divide?

In the far north, there are sections of up

to 150km without any shops or towns.

Plus there are signs of large carnivores

on the trails like bears and wolves which

make you realise how wild it is. It’s

quite a change from the central sections

where you might pass through several

towns a day at some points.

You’ve been looking for somewhere

to settle down, any idea where

that’ll be?

I’m not sure I’ll settle after this, but

perhaps for the colder part of the year,

I’ll go to Catalonia if I can find a

quiet place to build a wooden cabin. I’d

still love to travel for several months a

year. I know the wanderlust will never

leave me. Perhaps working as a cycling

guide or just adding to the European

Divide Trail could keep me happy

for many years to come. I also feel it

needs to go to northern Scotland and

Istanbul in the future, so that’ll keep

me busy for a while yet.

Hi Sofiane. Tell us how you got

into cycling?

I used to commute when I worked

at a magazine in Paris. Then they

moved and I had a longer commute.

That’s when I started getting into

cycling. I’d try to get across town as

fast as possible. Then, in 2010 I went

travelling in Asia. I’d been taking

buses and trains, but in Laos, I decided

to buy a bike. I ended up riding it

7,000 kilometres. When I got back

I tried to get a job in an office, but

I couldn’t do it. After all that time

outside I found it too claustrophobic,

so I became a bike messenger.

When did you decide you wanted

to race?

a fulltime professional bikepacker.

Although I’d still probably make

a little less than I do as a bike

messenger.

What’s the toughest event you’ve

raced?

Different factors make a race hard,

like the route, the competition, or the

weather. One race that left me really

beaten-up was the Italy Divide. The

route is tough, then James Hayden and

Jay Petervary turned up. At the start, I

was dehydrated, but by the end, I found

myself caught in a snowstorm. Altitude

can also be a huge factor. At the Inca

Divide, some sections climb to 5,000

metres.

From dropping parcels around

Paris to delivering at the world’s

toughest adventure races,

messenger and racer Sofiane is our

newest team member. With wins

at BikingMan, Inca Divide, Italy

Divide, and the Atlas Mountain

Race, he’s rapidly established

himself as one of the sports

preeminent competitors. In a rare

static moment, we caught up with

him to find out about his life and

travels.

In 2014 I rode the Great Divide

route from Alberta, Canada to New

Mexico. It was my first time offroad,

and it was far harder than

I’d imagined. To start with I was

miserable and it felt like I was

making no progress. But after a

few weeks, I settled into a rhythm.

Having toured the route, I was

curious to see how fast I could race

it. In 2016 I went back to compete

and came third.

Since then you’ve won a ton

of races. Can you now make a

living from racing?

I never imagined there’d be any

money in the sport. Until recently

I’ve always paid for everything.

That changed after I won the Atlas

Mountain Race. I’d had kit from

brands before, but now they’ll

sometimes come with a bit of money

for flights and accommodation. I

couldn’t stop working yet, but it

wouldn’t take much more to become

At one point I was going uphill

for seven hours. It’s so remote that

resupply is tricky too, and at night

it’s impossible to ride because of the

cold. Even in August, the tops of the

passes can get down to -15°C. It means

winning can come down to who’s at the

bottom of the pass when it’s time to

sleep.

How would you describe your

approach to racing?

I just don’t stop. I know if I can keep

going, I don’t have to be the fastest.

I remember an interview where Lael

Wilcox said she didn’t stop to eat. It

was a revelation. Why would you sit and

enjoy a pizza? It’s a race.

When I resupply, I’m in and out, and

when I see tarmac, that’s when I eat.

My advice is not to look at your average

speed. Instead, look at your elapsed

time and your moving time and aim to

get them as close as possible.

How much of being a great

endurance racer is in the legs, and

how much is in the head?

The mental aspect is important,

but all of us that win bike races are

accomplished cyclists. At some point in

an ultra race, everyone is going to be

tired. Then it becomes what can your

legs do after too many kilometres and

not much sleep. Off-road racing is so

hard, I think the mental element is even

more important, especially with the

need to resupply or spend time sleeping

out.

Road Mountain Race is also on my

bucket list. I’ve been to Central

Asia and the scenery is a big draw,

but also the emptiness. Whether it’s

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan

or Tajikistan, there’s never a lot

of people. I told myself I would go

back to Kyrgyzstan, and the Silk

Road Mountain race would be a great

opportunity. The route takes you places

very few people will have seen, and it

looks like a proper adventure.

What about pro road cyclists

trying adventure racing?

Former Grand Tour racer Christian

Meier raced the Atlas Mountain Race.

He’s the real deal, so looking at it

selfishly, if I’m competing against such

an accomplished athlete, it proves our

sport is serious. I think it’s positive.

Then again, if things start to shift and

it’s suddenly more attractive to current

pros because there’s more money, maybe

people will be attracted for the wrong

reasons. As amateurs, all of us come for

the same reason. It’s a fraternity, and

we have the same ethics. I can’t imagine

any of the current top riders cheating,

because it’s not just about winning. I

don’t want to see that change.

What race has captured your

imagination for the future?

On my calendar this year was the

Highland 550 in Scotland. The Silk

Broadcasting

from

the Beach

When our video editor and

photographer was forced to leave

his flat in Cologne, it provided the

impetus he and his girlfriend needed

to hit the road. A former bandmate of

Bombtrack founder Manuel Schuerholz,

Marvin has been instrumental in

creating our videos. Currently

operating beachside in Portugal, the

team’s riders send over their raw

footage, and Marvin spits out the

finished edit. All he needs is a laptop,

wifi, and a few nearby waves.

In between surf sessions, we caught up

with him during lockdown to find out

how he ended up making films about

bikes in the back of a van.

“I studied jazz piano and was a musician

for ten years,” explains Marvin. “At

one point me and Manuel were in a

band together. The management asked if

I would take a GoPro and film a tour

blog. I asked if I could do the editing

too. Manuel saw it and asked me to do

something for Bombtrack”.

needed for work is a camera, laptop,

headphones and stable wifi. “Or at

least a SIM card with lots of gigabytes of

data,” says Marvin.

Having no fixed address, hours, or

boss also allows Marvin the freedom to

organise his time.

“I don’t have a typical workday,” he

says. “It’s one of the things I enjoy the

most. No day is the same. Somedays I’ll

work all day, to the extent I forget to

eat if I’m really involved in a project.

Other days I don’t work at all and just

go surfing or play guitar. I’ve never been

conventionally employed, so I don’t know

what it’s like working nine to five”.

That was five years ago. Having

since taught himself advanced

photography and video editing skills

via Youtube, Marvin is now responsible

for Bombtrack’s videos which have

been seen by over a million people

worldwide.

However, rather than making them in

a conventional editing suite, like our

riders, Marvin’s studio is also totally

mobile.

“Two years ago me and my girlfriend got

kicked out of our flat and decided not to

get another. We spent time crashing on

friends’ sofas. Then last year I got a van,

which I converted, and now we’re living

on the road”.

“Normally the riders aren’t shooting

with a crew, so I’ll try and get them to

be on-point with the camera settings.

In the beginning, I had to tell them off

a lot. Sometimes the shots would look

different or have come from different

cameras, which made them hard to edit

together. Now the team has got pretty

good at filming, so it’s a bit easier”.

At the end of most trips, Marvin

gets delivered a bundle of footage to

construct a story out of. Last year

this included editing highlights from

the racing at the Dirty Reiver, a short

about our own NRW Cross Cup series,

a travelogue covering the team’s trip

to the Tuscany Trail.

Sometimes Marvin likes to pick

up the camera himself, like he did

with all the 2020 bike’s studioclips

or the beautiful “The Analog Kids”

documentary about Clem Shovel and

his son Lubin. “A while back I went with

Marc Mauer to Cappadocia in Turkey

for the first “A Journey Beyond” film.

I think that film is still my favourite.

Making it was such an event for us”.

Despite never once having been

camping, adapting to life on the road

has proved relatively easy. “Besides

work, for having fun the most important

items are my surfboard and skateboard.

Although I’m a pianist, carrying around

a piano is impossible, so I’ve been

learning guitar too. I also like to cook

every day and visit local markets for

ingredients”.

Now settled into van life, one of the

few remaining challenges is keeping

everything charged. “There have been

occasions where I’ve had to drive around

to fill the batteries. At the moment, if

I need something charged quickly I’ll

usually go to a cafe and ask to plug it

i n ” .

Soon Marvin’s mobile studio should be

even more self-sufficient, thanks to a

new solar panel on the roof. Currently

staying on the coast twenty minutes

from Lisbon, there’s easily enough

sunshine to power the electronics

he needs to keep the Bombtrack

production studio running.

“When I started I had no idea if this

would work,” explains Marvin. “But

at the moment I’m spending less money,

so it’s actually easier to make a living

editing on the road than it would be

doing so from a flat”.

When we spoke, Marvin was remotely

editing “ Nine Miles” , our designer

Marko’s film about cycling during

lockdown. It should be released by the

time you’re reading this.

Once he’s free to move again, Marvin

isn’t sure where he’ll go. With plentiful

surf breaks, good food, and friendly

locals. he and his girlfriend are in

no hurry to leave the beach and get a

regular job.

“If I could trade my old life for this one,

I’d definitely choose this”.
