6 Plumbing Problems hiding in Old Homes and Buildings
Old houses may have an enchanting charm but they tend to conceal a variety
of problems behind their fancy plaster walls and crown moldings. They hide
secrets of faulty pipelines, air conditioning and heating system defaults. While
it’s easy to identify and replace air conditioning units and broken furnaces,
defective pipes are quite challenging to detect and replace.
These are some of the plumbing problems that you should get inspected
if moving in an old building or house:
1. Corrosion
Metal is prone to corroding over time – even the galvanized steel. When
the protective zinc coating of the pipe erodes, its exposed iron becomes
susceptible to rust. If left unchecked, the water running through the pipe
may turn orange and unsafe to use.
2. Pipe Belly Formation
Pipe belly is piping that had to be buckled or bowed due to house
settling. They can affect the pipe-work efficiency of directing water
towards the sewer line, causing clogging and poor drainage, if done
incorrectly.
3. Clogging
Even with regular annual maintenance, any experienced plumber will
tell you that it is quite hard to keep a pipe-work completely blockagefree
for over a decade. Decades of soap scum and sewage takes a toll
on the old drains of home, clogging and filling pipes with gunk.
4. Original Fixture Wear
Original handles, faucets, spigots and valves might cause leakage over
time due to rough use, that may lead to foul smells and high-utility bills,
making if important you replace all old plumbing units that might be
prone to leakage or rusting.
5. Tree Root Intrusion
Old homes often get penetrated by tree roots through their sewer lines.
Depending on the size of the root, it can break or block the pipe. Only
experienced technicians are able to detect such plumbing problems;
schedule regular inspections with a plumbing agency for keeping the
sewage from backing up.
6. Pipe Leakage
With advancements in technology new material is being introduced and
preferred by homeowners and builders every decade, making it
important that you opt for modern equipment replacing the old water
pipe products. As new material is constructed to prevent the problems
that the older version failed to solve. Polybutylene pipes were used in
the 90s' which are known to become leaky after a few years. It is better
than you get them replaced.
