When in June last year, members
states of the United Nations took a
decision to mark the 75th anniversary
of the UN with a one-day high level
meeting of the General Assembly on
Monday , September 21, 2020,
nobody saw COVID-19 pandemic
coming; neither did they envisage the
epic disruption it would cause to the
entire world. Like every other
institutions whose activities have been
affected by the pandemic, the UN will
tomorrow move to the virtual space to
host this event with the theme: “The
Future We Want, the UN We Need: Reaffirming our Collective
Commitment to Multilateralism.” The event will also include
plenary session for the youth who are themselves deeply
multilateral.
Although the session will brainstorm on the next 75 years of
the world body, the celebration presents a great opportunity to
acknowledge and commend the efforts of the UN, especially
with regards to the promotion of gender equality in the last few
decades. The historic 4th World Conference on Women held in
Beijing China in 1995, remains a reference point for many
women.
As the UN determines to explore more of a multilateral
approach to addressing issues, back home, this approach will
help see more young people and women included in the arms of
government where they are practically not being carried along. A
better collaboration would have seen more young people and
women participating in the ongoing elections in Nigeria.
For our cover personality today, it’s a thumps for Victoria
Nkong, an Entertainment Consultant who’s been helping young
people turn their talent into a business. She shares her story
INTERVIEW
Victoria Nkong:
Super Talent Promoter
Words By -Yemisi Suleiman
Victoria Nkong is a Public Relations Strategist, an Entertainment Consultant, Talent
Manager, and the Chief Executive Officer of Qtaby Events, an entertainment company
with strong interest in talent management, Events Production, and Public Relations.
Her foray into the entertainment industry began with her role as a bilingual presenter at the
prestigious KORA All Africa Music Awards.
Eleven years on, Victoria has built a reputation for herself as one of the most prolific hands in the
industry, having worked on or managed projects of some A-list artists around Africa including;
Akon, WizKid, Davido, as well as a few from Europe and America.
In this interview, she opens up about the entertainment industry, one of the worst hit by the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Looking back, how does it feel celebrating 11years
as an entrepreneur?
I actually got very emotional looking back at my
journey, seeing how far I have come, and the different
stages of transition to get to where we are today. It just
corroborates the fact that you can be whatever you
want to be if you work hard at it.
Can you share with us your high and low
moments?
There have been moments when business got
very hectic and moments when I took some business
decisions that I eventually regretted. I remember
investing in a particular talent against the advice of my
business adviser. It ended up in a mess. I felt
particularly bad because a lot of sacrifices went into
the branding and promotion of the said talent. I also
remember the first time my company decided to invest
in buying production equipment because we had been
commissioned to shoot some content for clients. We
felt it would be better to get our own equipment rather
than to rent the equipment. We took a loan to buy the
equipment but eventually, the clients didn’t keep to
their end of the bargain. This drove us into serious
financial difficulties. Thankfully, we were able to survive
those moments. There have been exciting moments
as well like, when we were been recognized for some
very successful projects, or even been referred for
projects that we thought would be challenging and we
are eventually able to turn things around for good. I
remember when we shot a commercial across four
countries for GOTV, the recommendation of the client
afterwards was quite fulfilling.
You have worked with a good number of artists in
the past, what is it like for you being in the
background of their success?
For me, it brings fulfillment, helping an artiste turn
his talent into a profession, and eventually, making
money out of his talen. So, after a lot of background
hard work and strategizing, when the talent becomes
successful, it’s usually like a dream come through for
me seeing our vision materialize.
As a talent manager, what initiatives have you
taken to improve a client’s brand?
Several. Our role is actually behind the scenes,
constantly thinking. We start from the point of what
brand story we want to achieve, and this differs differ
from one Talent to the other. We put together a
strategy document and as we go on, we keep
analyzing to see if we are meeting our goals: if not, we
adjust to fit.
Covid-19 has affected all facets of life, kindly
share your experience based on the entertainment
industry and proffer post Covid-19 solutions?
For the entertainment industry, it’s been really
challenging. Most of our concerts have been canceled,
even movie production was put on hold for a long
time. So our source of income has been truncated. We
had the whole year planned especially at this time of
the year when summer events are supposed to be
happening. We have all now turned towards digital
streams. Everyone needs to restrategize and
reposition. For my company, the Public Relations and
Business Development aspect of the business has
been the most lucrative at this time, as more brands
are realising the importance of showcasing their
brands to their target clients. So even though we have
been doing PR for at least 7years now, that aspect of
the business is now getting a lot more attention.
The pandemic and its effects aren’t going away
anytime soon. You need to brace up and redefine your
business delivery strategies, to ensure that your
business does not suffer too much. Remember that
even during this pandemic, some businesses are
making higher profits.
You have worked with a lot of artists. What were
your challenges and how were you able to
surmount them?
Working with artistes requires a lot of patience, tact
and discipline. A lot of the time, you are planning and
trying to work towards a vision but, you definitely, need
the participation of the artists in order to ensure good
results. Unfortunately, at times, they do not see the
vision that you see so it’s difficult. You also have to
take the bullet most times for some of your artiste’
actions in order to protect their image. In my case, I try
to be very professional and most of the talents that
work with me know that I would not compromise their
long-term brand goals and interests for momentary
gratification. They appreciate this afterwards but, it
could be such a hard task getting them to accept it
initially
You had issues in the past with one of the brands
you managed Olajumoke Oni the bread seller, can
you shed more light on this?
Olajumoke’s case is one I would have loved to
forget; but just to put the records straight, she lacked
the discipline required to build a career in the
entertainment industry. She failed to understand that it
takes a lot of time, money and hard work, to create or
revive a brand before any benefits can be reaped from
it. It is probable that the circumstances that led to her
sudden celebrity status (recall she was just passing by
selling her bread), may have confused her into believing that
nothing more than her presence was required for money to start
flowing in.
Sadly, by the time I signed her on, mostly for humanitarian
reasons, the buzz around her had already died. So in order to
revive her career especially as she has no particular talent, huge
sums which I will never recoup was expended on her including,
two all-expense paid international trips, personal etiquette and
English tutors, modeling tutors, etc. I even went beyond our
scope and was shouldering personal bills, like her kids’ medical
bills, utility bills, foodstuff e.t.c Every time that we had a paid 3rd
party job for her, we still gave her her percentage.
Despite all these, she had a penchant for getting into
situations which were damaging for the new brand we were trying
to create. So, a lot was spent on damage control and bailing her
out of trouble. It was really exhausting and unsustainable.
Therefore, it was inevitable that our efforts were doomed to fail. I,
however, take solace in the fact that we did all we could for her
and I do hope she will be able to find a career path in the industry
howbeit, with a different team.
Tell me a bit about yourself, growing up years and
educational background?
I am the girl child of my family, I am 32yrs old. Growing up, my
parents were both in the educational sector: My mum was a
school principal and my dad was the Director of the Ministry of
Education as well as the WAEC board so they literarily sent us off
to school very early. At 14yrs I was already headed to the
University. I had to grow up quickly and started working at about
28yrs old which is why I became an entrepreneur early. I
published my book Diary of A Mad Black Woman two years ago
which is my memoir, telling my life story.
What informed your choice of career as a teenager, the
entertainment industry?
I never set out to work or function in the entertainment
industry; rather, entertainment chose me. I am multilingual; I
speak French and Spanish so, I got a job as a multi-lingual
secretary for KORA AWARDS. Eventually, I got promoted and
trained as a producer with KORA. I realised that my job then gave
me a lot of exposure and I literarily was helping people achieving
their dreams, and making sense out of their lives, which is
something that I am passionate about.
What artist do you look forward to working with?
Hmmm... non comes to mind for now. I have worked with
most of the A list artists around Africa: from Akon, Wizkid to
Davido, Harrysong etc either as their manager, or based on
selected projects or Events.
What do you love about what you do?
I love the fact that my work actually seems like recreation to
me. I’m very passionate about everything that I do because it
adds value directly to the society and to the individual. Well, on
the fun side, I love travelling a lot and the job gave me that
opportunity.
When you are not working how do you relax?
I spend time playing with my children at the orphanage. You
know a number of them came to the home as babies, so some of
then actually think I am their biological mother. I have to make out
time for that bond.
How did you get into philanthropy?
Growing up, I always wanted something I could do as service
to society and to God. I realised early that helping people fix their
problems and putting a smile on people’s faces, always gave me
fulfillment. Also, my parents were philanthropists so I grew up
seeing them help and support a lot of people. Eventually, I prayed
for direction and planned that at age 25, I would start my charity
organisation. I spent most of my weekends visiting other
orphanages as a volunteer. After the tragic loss of my elder sister
to a violent marriage, the orphanage and foundation became like
my projects that I set up as part of my healing process.
What is the best advice you have received in life and how
has it shaped you as an entrepreneur?
Every new day is an opportunity, look at what you could have
done better yesterday, and then do it. Also, pay attention to your
Network because having people is more important than having
money.
Talk
SPOT
By - Rita Okoye
Q & A
...Continued from previous week
Dear Adesuwa,
Please, what should a lady do when her partner
hardly gets to the peak of sexual pleasure even
after she had told him what to do, and where to
touch? He is always in a hurry and says to me,
“do quick and let’s go.” .....Chichi, Benin
Dear Chichi,
Sex is give and take, it is a learned skill, so talk to
him and teach him how to be good in bed. Start with
telling him how to please you, tell him what you want
sexually. At the same time, ask him about his desires
as it is not supposed to be a guessing game.
Feel free to get sex instruction books and videos
for couples. Go through them and learn together, work
with him by communicating openly and honestly with
each other. Explore and experiment with each other,
try what interests either of you in the books or videos.
Do the above in a way that does not make him feel
less of a man or hurt his ego.
Dear Adesuwa,
How do I get my husband to make me
experience orgasm?
Even when I take his hand to touch me where I
want to be touched, it does not quite hit the spot. I
have to rely on a clitoral stimulating toy to hit the
spot. So if I can’t be bothered to get/charge the
toy, then I just go without after a while, one starts
feeling a bit frustrated. ...Bukky - United Kingdom.
Dear Bukky,
The best most natural way is to provide positive
commentary when he does something right – ‘’Right
there’’ or ‘’that feels incredible’’. You must also use
phrases like ‘’just a little to the right’’ or ‘’harder’’ or
more tongue right there.’’ It is easiest to modify the
actions if he is already performing the act. Stay
positive in the commentary but be sure to be honest
and don’t moan when something does not feel good
because, he won’t know what he’s doing is wrong.
Your tone matters a lot –moan/whisper instructions
and If your guy is very good with the tongue and
fingering, you might not need a vibrator. Very few
ladies can achieve orgasm through penetration.
Dear Adesuwa,
I am a plus sized woman, l find it difficult to
enjoy sex. Kindly tell which sex positions will
make me have a satisfying sex life. .....Princess,
Lagos.
Dear Princess,
6
/ September 20, 2020
Despite what you may have been led to believe,
sex is sexy at any size although you may come away
disappointed because of your extra weight when you
flip through a sex position book.
You or your partner may need to be creative in
order to find sex positions that allow for deep, intimate
penetration. You may feel like being lazy or you may
feel like giving it your all. Either way, some of these sex
positions should help the two of you achieve better
penetration without the acrobatic-like moves that many
sex position lists recommend. Below, you’ll find some
sex positions that are great for larger body types –The
seated position, doggy style, sexy spooning, reverse
cowgirl, butterfly etc.
Dear Adesuwa,
My wife to be was circumcised as a child. How
can I make sure she enjoys sex and reaches
orgasm? .....Wale, Kogi State.
Dear Wale,
People mistakenly believe that the entire clitoris is
removed during female circumcision. The truth is that,
the clitoris is actually an internal organ next to the
bladder. The clitoris extends from inside the body to
the outside of the vagina. That small tip of the clitoris
that is outside the body, in the vagina is called the
“glans clitoris.” During female circumcision, depending
on what type is performed, that visible/external tip of
the clitoris, the “glans clitoris” is what is removed. The
remaining internal structure of the clitoris is still there
and thus, a circumcised woman is still able to have
orgasms.
The people who are saying the entire clitoris is
removed are uninformed about how the female
anatomy works: and they don’t realize the clitoris is
actually way bigger than the little piece you can see in
the vagina. Most important for your wife to enjoy sex
with you, is for you to treat her feelings as well as her
body with respect. Talk to her about her sexual
feelings, learn about female sexuality and how to
arouse a woman sexually before even thinking of
having intercourse. Be gentle. Even if the tip of the
clitoris has been removed, a larger part may remain
beneath the surface and be capable of sexual
responsiveness. Orgasm is not the be-all and end-all
of sex.
On the other hand, if you are willing to keep an
open mind about what constitutes “sex”, there are lots
of other ways that the two of you can have sex that
don’t involve hurting her which both of you may find
very pleasurable. Here are a few that come to mind:
Deep, intense kissing, caressing and suckling her
boobs (some women can have orgasms just from this).
You stroking, caressing, and kissing her belly, buttocks,
hands, massaging her neck, shoulders, feet [some
ladies swear that a good foot massage feels as good
as sex to them ] including other sensitive areas, vice
versa with her performing oral sex on you (many
women really enjoy doing this).
If you try these kinds of activities with her, over
time, she may relax to the point where she is able to
take your manhood inside her vagina without pain/
may not. You need to be willing to accept whichever
possibility actually happens. She may eventually be
willing to accept your organ inside her with a small
amount of pain and may get indirect pleasure seeing
and feeling you enjoying her even if she doesn’t feel
direct pleasure of her own. But you absolutely must
stop immediately whenever she says “it hurts too
much!” And it is important that you reciprocate, by
giving her pleasure in lots of other ways such as the
ones I listed above. Know that you can seek further
help from a professional if need be.
There are always challenges to sexuality and that is
why it is important to talk about it, by getting your sex
questions answered by a Sex therapist/coach so as to
improve your sex life.
What some of your favourite
celebrities said and we listened.
“Be calm, pay attention and
listen. That might be what you
need now. Listen to the
frequency that is not easily
picked. The strength of who
you are connects to a
frequency. Your self
awareness is the strength of
who you are and remember
there are different levels of
frequencies. Therefore friends,
you can Be More,” Busola
Dakolo harps on self
awareness.
“It’s important to recognize that
everyone has their preferences
when it comes to kissing and
know that kissing isn’t for
everyone and that’s OK. For
me a kiss can make or break a
relationship everyone is
different, it’s about
communication and then just
being realistic with how much
your willing to compromise. I
tend to take control once I
realise I don’t like the style of
kiss,” Destiny Amaka on
the importance of kissing.
“Hard work and dedication to
your craft or the job at hand is
the price of SUCCESS.
There is no short cut to
SUCCESS!! It is the result of
preparation, hard work and
learning from failure,” Funke
Akindele says no shortcut
to success.
“People may destroy your
image, stain your personality
but they can’t take away
your good deeds because
no matter how they describe
you, you will still be admired
by those who really know
you better,” Rita Daniels’
word to rumour mongers.
5
Reasons To
Exfoliate
Your Skin
BEAUTY
By - Linda Orajekwe
The term “beauty is skin deep” makes a new kind
of sense when you think of exfoliation, a very
important part of the skincare routine that is most
times overlooked. For your skin to radiate, you
have to always think “exfoliation”- scrubbing off
those dead cells so that beauty within can radiate
outside.
Still wondering why you should exfoliate? Here are
five reasons:
acne control
1
2
3
Smoother skin: Exfoliate your skin to
take off the dead cells that have pilled up on the
surface of your skin, making it rough to touch.
Once your skin is exfoliated and unwanted skin
scrubbed off the surface, touching it becomes a
more pleasing experience.
Lighten dark spot: You see that part of
your face where pimples once occupied but now
crowded with spots, exfoliating will take off the
dead cells there; and with consistent exfoliation,
those dark spots will brighten up to blend right
to other parts of your skin.
Boost your skincare routine: No
matter the product you use for your skincare
routine, if that routine does not involve you
exfoliating your skin, chances are you’re wasting
a great part of your time because, this routine
is meeting a thick wall of build-up skin that will
obstruct the products from penetrating the skin
enough to do its work. So to get the best out of
the product you’ve spent a great deal of money
on, exfoliate and take the obstacle away.
scrub &
exfoliator
4
5
Makes your makeup go on
evenly: Avoid making your foundation
cling to flaky or rough patches on your skin just
because you have refused to exfoliate. When
that happens, it makes you look sick and that’s
not the aim of making up. So exfoliate and
make your skin the perfect Canvas to work that
Queen Sarah to give Hope
to the Vulnerable
For Miss Sarah Toritseju Pessu, the latest
Most Beautiful Face in Nigeria, winning the
fiercely competitive pageant made her childhood
dreams a reality. The beauty queen stated this
on her handle while encouraging youths and her
fans to pursue their dreams to fruition.
“I have always pictured my crowning moment
by Queen Aisha and the reality was way better.
I still did not believe I had won even after I was
crowned. Everyone started calling me queen, it
felt really strange. But it’s a dream come true for
me” she said.
Queen Sarah, a Biomedical Science
graduate from the University of Bradford, has
planned to give hope to the vulnerable as part of
her pet project.
“My pet project is called, “Hope to the
Vulnerable” and it is about feeding the poor,
and empowering the Nigerian youths. It is going
to involve the distribution of food items to the
vulnerable groups (poor children and women)
in Nigeria, especially in Edo and Delta States. I
will also be training some lucky youths to acquire
entrepreneurial skills such as Catering, Fashion
designing, Hair styling, and a few more that I am
still working on.”
Borderless Trade Launched
A book, Borderless Trade: A
step by step guide to exporting
your product, aimed at helping
young entrepreneurs has been
launched virtually.
Authored by Olori Boye-Ajayi
assist budding export merchants to
prepare and build capacity for the
export journey.
Aside the book launch, Olori
Boye-Ajayi also launched the
the 2 million Naira Borderless
up in partnership with O.B.A and
SME’s looking to expand their
FEMI Otedola’s Ferrari GiftS to DAUGHTERS
It was an exciting week for Nigeria’s female
celebrity DJ, Florence Otedola also known as
Cuppy and her sisters Temi and Tolani Otedola,
when they took delivery of three Ferrari Portofino
cars from their billionaire father, Femi Otedola.
The girls who were the trending topic on
social media for ‘Papa’s gift,’ each took to their
instagram pages to show off their new gift.
For Tolani it was time for some fun as
she wrote: “Haven’t been out in a while, but
I’m so excited to take this beauty out for a
spin! Thank you so much Papa for the most
stunning gift. Love…”
Cuppy on her part, posted the photo on
her timeline with the caption: “Papa took us
shopping and bought ONE of EACH.” To keep
her fans and followers updated, Temi Otedola
Osas Ighodaro’s
Fab Look
You can’t overstate
the importance of
making an entrance,
and last week, actress
Osas Ighodaro
definitely made an
impressive entrance
when she attended the
World Première of ‘The
Smart Money Woman’
TV Series. Osas
looked fabulous in a
double slit, thigh high
pink dress that stood
her out from the crowd
and we love it.
