Call to arms to boost RSA
• By Matt Slaughter
MEMBERSHIP IS dwindling
at New Brighton Returned
and Services Association.
Its secretary Garry House
said the number of members
at the RSA on Mafeking St has
dropped from about 300 before
the earthquakes to about
110 now as a result of many
previous members moving or
dying.
He said part of the RSA’s
problem is it is tucked away
on a cul-de-sac and a number
of people don’t know where
it is.
Said House: “I think the
locals need to have a greater
awareness of our existence
and where we are and get
rid of the notion that unless
you’re a serving member it’s
not for you. We will accept
any reasonable person to
come and have a drink and
play billiards or snooker, you
do not need to be a member.
“We would love some
younger members,” he said.
The RSA’s facility,
which it shares with New
Brighton Bowling Club, was
constructed new in 2018
after its original premises
on New Brighton Rd was
damaged beyond repair in the
earthquakes.
Its $600,000 games room,
equipped with snooker and
pool tables and darts boards,
won an award at the New
Zealand Institute of Architects
Canterbury Architecture
Awards last year.
But House said this has not
led to an increase in current
service personnel or patrons
Now only
$35.80
Plus $5 P&H per copy
coming through the door.
House said if membership
numbers continue to decrease
its future may be in doubt but
this is not going to happen on
his watch.
“If it fell significantly, there
may become a point where the
costs exceed the income. That
is a possibility but that’s the
same in any business, I mean,
we’re not preaching doom
and gloom at the moment
but we can see that it’s common
sense that we need to do
something.”
He said New Brighton’s Anzac
day celebrations attracted
about 3500 people last year
and if the RSA ever closes this
event may no longer be able to
happen.
