Charlie andEsmaHill have sold their<br />

beloved boutique vineyard business,<br />

CharRees.<br />

It's abittersweet momentasthe<br />

sale was fast­tracked due to Mr Hill’s<br />

ongoing health issues. He was<br />

advised to slow down andstop heavy<br />

lifting work.<br />

They have enjoyed some wonderful<br />

friendships metthrough visitors to<br />

the vineyard, and on their market<br />

travels.<br />

Meeting people arethe thing we<br />

will miss most, Mr Hill said.<br />

‘‘It's beenanexperience. We have<br />

had some very supportive clients ...<br />

and people in thewine industry,’’ he<br />

said, including horticulturist, and<br />

mentor, Jim Grierson and winemaker<br />

Kirk Bray.<br />

‘‘We are going to miss it, no two<br />

ways about it,’’ hesaid, of the<br />

vineyard.<br />

The residential lifestyle property<br />

which spans 9.5 hectaresonLaings<br />

Road, is on the outskirts of Tinwald.<br />

The vineyard was establishedin1999<br />

with 3500 pinot noir and 4000 pinot<br />

gris vines, followed by 1800 riesling in<br />

2008.<br />

The Hillshaveafewcasesofwine<br />

left for sale; mostly Riesling and<br />

bottles of their Sparkling Pearl.<br />

They areplanning aclosingdown<br />

sale on October 18,with wine anda<br />

range of household items up for sale.<br />

While they have no set plans yet, they<br />

are planning on retiring to <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

and willtakeabreather from making<br />

any immediate plans.<br />

The vineyard has been sold to<br />

Victoria Johnson, of Mayfield, who<br />

plans to keep thevines and expand<br />

the venue. She takes over on<br />

November 2.<br />

Esma and Charlie Hill are celebrating<br />

the sale of their beloved vineyard<br />

CharRees and will now enjoy<br />

retirement.<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> has won the<br />

Canterbury Boys Brigade<br />

DrillCompetition and a<br />

secondteam has placedthird<br />

in the senior competition.<br />

The juniors, all Year 8<br />

students, wonatrophy and<br />

certificate for their effortsat<br />

therecent event heldat<br />

Lincoln.<br />

The samegroup came<br />

third lastyear and is led by<br />

Nathan Steer.<br />

Ittookoverall top honours<br />

in uniforminspection, drill<br />

and marching sections.<br />

The purpose of thedrill is<br />

to promote positive habits<br />

self­controland<br />

concentration.<br />

It also promotes positive<br />

round of applications had<br />

justclosed and therehad<br />

beenagoodresponseand a<br />

second round opened on<br />

October12, closing on<br />

December4.<br />

She expected aquick<br />

turnaroundofapplications.<br />
