Support bee growth
BeeAware Month may be the
buzz word across the country
butit’s also the perfect time
to sweeten up your native
planting skills and support
bees which arekey to our
community health and
resilience.
It’s no secret thatbees hold
ourecosystem together
through the crosspollination
of plantssothey can fruit and
provide food forinsects,
animalsand humans –sothis
September is the time to
share andsupport the vital
rolethese small furry insects
playinthe wellbeing of the
country.
Akura Nursery assistant
Carolyn Anderson says
there’s many waystohelp
keep bees healthy, happy and
busy.
“There’s arange of native
andnonnative plantsthat
anyone canplant in their
backyard that support bee
survival.
‘‘Bees need avariety of
plantsand trees that flower at
different times for food
sources, so they can keep
their colony strong and
healthy through the spring
period.”
“My top suggestion for
natives species are ti kouka
Mowing lawns less frequently can help bees thrive.
(cabbage tree), ngaio,
harakeke, puahou(fivefinger)and
koromiko (hebe).
Also,exotics species such as
willowtree, lucerne and
eucalypts can give an
excellent year round bounty
for the bees.”
Carolyn has worked at the
Wairarapa nursery for six
years and says2020 is by far
the biggest year in sales for
plantsthat help bee survival,
which might be duetothe
raising awareness of their
influence on our ecosystem
and humanhealth.
“People need to getinquick
to buy fromtheir local
nurseries andget planting
before it’s too late, because
the planting season is coming
to an end.”
There are further
opportunities for the hapori
whanui(wider community) to
support bee health in line
with sustainable farming
practices that are available
through various programmes.
Greater Wellington
councillor Penny Gaylor says,
“Bees do alot of mahi for us,
they’re extremely important
to our wellbeing, so now it’s
our turn to help make their
jobs easier.
‘‘Wework closely with alot
of farmers and lifestyle block
owners who want to adopt a
more environmental
approach on their land’’
Spruce up your home, garden
As the daysget longer and
warmersomethingstirsin
most of us ...it’s time for a
spruce up aroundthe home
and garden.
There can be lots to do, but
remember you don’t have to
do it all yourself.
Ashburton District is well
served with skilled
tradespeople whowill take a
load offyour shoulders
whetheritisinthe gardenor
maintenance around the
property, perhaps evenanew
trellis or deck.
With the warmerweather
arriving, it is an excellent
time to getrid of moss,
especially in those bricks
used for pathsaround the
Ongoing garden
maintenance is important .
shady sideof the house.
Spring is agood time to
hose down thehouse and
windows, too.
Though it may notlook
dirty it is surprising the fresh
look it will take on. There
may be somepaintwork that
needs to be touched up.
The best times to paint are
days with little wind and
when theexpected
temperature is between 15
and 30 degrees celsius. Never
paint on excessively cold
(below 10 degrees), rainyor
very humid days. Allsurfaces
shouldbeprepared
correctly. Then there is the
garden that’s getting ready to
bring you fresh delights every
day.
Fresh green growth and the
first flowersofthe season are
areminder spring is here.
