New housing units for elderly
An agreement between the
Ashburton District Council
and Ashburton Housing and
Support Trustwill deliver up
to 17 new housing units for the
district's elderly residents.
Council has agreed to lease
land it owns on thecorner of
DobsonStreet, Cass Street and
Mona Square in Ashburton for
anominal rent to the housing
trust. The lease willallow the
trust to demolish eight
existing, but deteriorating
elderly person housing units
and build new ones.

8-seater chairlift for Mt Hutt
Mt Hutt skifield is getting New
Zealand’s first8­seater chairlift –the
Nor’west Express.
The new chairlift will replace the
current quad chair and work will start
oninstalling it in late October. It is
expectedtobeopenforthe start of the
nextski season.

McKenziesays it willimprove how
guestsaccess the mountain.
‘‘The ridetime of the Nor’west
Express is onlytwo minutes and it has
capacity to carryupto3000 people an
hour.
‘‘The Quad currently takes at least
seven minutes to reach the top and can
only move around1500 people an hour
on agoodday, so we’re excited thatour
guests will be able to enjoy more time
on the slopeswith thisnew addition.
The lift will follow thesame path up
the mountain as the Quad and provide
the best accesstothe terrain parks..
