CLA 2019-20 YEARBOOK | 1
The Centennial Leadership Academy (CLA) is a hub of resources and programs
designed to develop the leader in every student.
Our Mission is to help Centennial students develop as leaders on their personal,
professional and community journeys, acting as a catalyst between students,
faculty, employers and communities.
The 2019-2020 was a year of many firsts for the CLA. From a remodeled leadership
retreat to launching two Toastmasters clubs and developing new leadership
workshops for ongoing student leadership success, the CLA created, engaged
and explored with you.
It is now time to celebrate!
Through this yearbook of CLA highlights, we wanted to thank YOU, the students who
have made the 2019-2020 year so memorable.
Enjoy – and stay in touch!
STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
October 2019
The new academic year kicked off with the planning of annual Student Leadership Conference. Organized
by students for students, the conference was brought to the Centennial community by the Student
Leadership Committee comprised of Centennial students Geina, Aslihan, Vipan, Jun, Denis, Maria and
co-chaired by Matt and Lubana, our Student Co-Chairs working with the Co-Curricular Student Learning
and Development team.
Conference Testimonial
I was privileged to work with a strong and spirited team of student leaders to plan,
organize and facilitate through icebreakers, ideation and innovation. This student
development experience added value to my life. I would like to encourage our
student community to join us for the next Student Leadership Conference.
Geina, Student Leadership Conference Committee 2019
Conference Committee, October 2019
Inspired by the theme Finding the Leader Within, the conference included hands-on activities to develop
the leadership mindset and practices students could apply in their daily lives. We met with and learned
from leaders and peers from across the Centennial community and completed workshops that matched
our own leadership interests.
CLA FIRST: For the first time, the Student Leadership Conference offered childcare for children of students
during the event. This free service enabled a greater number of students to participate in the events we
hold outside of regular school hours. Thank you to Jordan Robinson and the Athletics and Recreation team
for providing such a fun day for our youngest participants!
STUDENT LEADERSHIP RETREAT
In February 2020 we hosted the first ‘Centennialized’ Student Leadership Retreat, an intensive off-campus
leadership development experience. Student leaders spent three days and two nights at the Cedar Glen
Outdoor Centre in Schomberg, Ontario.
Students first met each other at the pre-retreat in mid-February, where we all, facilitators included, learned
about our DISC profiles -- our preferred behavioural styles as related to tasks and people. Students met
their retreat “buddy” and set out on a mission to make the most out of this unique experience.
On Monday, February 24, we boarded a COLTS bus (how fun! with seatbelts!) and soon arrived at the
expansive Cedar Glen YMCA. We all settled into our comfy rooms and began what was a deeply engaging
and unforgettable experience. Through group, team and individual activities, we gained insights into our
emotional and social intelligence, discussed our conflict resolution styles, worked on our personal mission
and self-care practices, and took ample time for reflection and connection with others.
The weather allowed for some incredible outdoors experiences: we had a bonfire, complete with smores
and songs, we tried snowshoeing, archery and a super fun outdoor maze. We played games and talked
until late into the night.
The retreat made us a tighter Centennial community and more capable agents of change and leadership.
The retreat’s facilitators – Ella Bates, Rob Hurtubise, Lynda O’Donovan, Annie Sun and Magdalena
Goledzinowska – express their gratitude to the student participants who made this trip an exceptional
growth experience for all.
Testimonials from retreat participants
“The facilitators did a great job to include the theory with the interactive activities. The
participation of my fellow students was on a higher level than I expected.”
“I got to know about the perspective of different people. I made some amazing
connections and the retreat gave me an opportunity and direction to self-reflect. I
understand and respect everyone’s thinking even more. I was amazed to see the
energy of facilitators. I thank everyone from bottom of my heart to make this retreat
wonderful and memorable.”
“I liked the fact that the students chosen to attend came from all walks of life, all
backgrounds and [had] many different things to bring to the table.”
TOASTMASTERS
Toastmasters is an international organization devoted to developing public speaking, communication
and leadership skills. In 2019, the CLA launched and soon after chartered two Toastmasters clubs at the
College. The clubs met each week on campus and continued meeting online when Centennial started
virtual teaching and learning in mid-March 2020.
Speak Up Centennial and Voice of Centennial were led by two unique and dedicated student executive
teams. We hosted guests from around the world, organized workshops with award-winning speakers, and
heard some and heard some truly exceptional speeches from our members. Most of all, we grew some
phenomenal friendships – our bonds now make us a Centennial Toastmasters Family!
Over 160 unique students attended a Toastmasters meeting this past year, and our typical weekly
meetings have about 15-20 participants.
This first year, we hosted our first ever club speech and evaluation competitions, all part of the annual
International Speech Contest organized by Toastmasters International. Two of our members, Dujavanthi
Sebastian and Mercy Mamman, moved on to Area competitions, placing in the top three at this higher level
as well!
Toastmasters Testimonials
The impact of Toastmasters on me as a student, professional and individual is a
journey I can never forget. Strong communication skills are so valuable irrespective of
one’s chosen career path or personal situation.
February 2020
I have metamorphosed from a nervous introvert into a daring and confident speaker, an
avid communicator and leader. I credit this personal transformation to the Toastmasters
community started at Centennial in the Fall of 2019. Communication makes us uniquely
human, and now I feel I have the clarity, the succinctness and the comfort when I speak
in public, both personally and professionally.
We know the Passport makes a difference because you tell us! We read and listen to your reflections on
what matters to you as a leader and what helped you grow.
I started, and finished the Leadership Passport because I wanted
thinking about what I need to do to strengthen my emotional and
mental responses to daily interactions within my life.
THANK YOU
The leadership programs at the CLA are a result of joint efforts of teams and individuals dedicated to
developing the best in others. We could not have experienced the personal and professional insights and
connections we did if it were not for the collaboration of our Centennial family.
A special thank you to the Co-Curricular Student Learning and Development team and our friends in
Career Services and Co-Operative Education -- your support of all things leadership has made it possible
for the CLA to pilot programs and activities with a true Centennial spirit and dedication. We succeed most
meaningfully when others want us to succeed, and your engagement was a joy to experience.
Our gratitude also to the members of the CLA’s Advisory Council – the leaders of other departments at
Centennial, faculty and employers – for sharing this past (and the CLA’s first complete) year with us. Your
perspective and your contributions will help shape what we do and how we understand and maximize
our impact.
Most of all, thank YOU, Centennial students of leadership, volunteers and peers dedicated to lifting others
and developing your own potential. The time you invest in yourself while at Centennial is also a time when
you make a difference in the lives of others through your example. We thank you for making Centennial
and our leadership activities a part of your life journey.
We look forward to more adventures in 2020-21 and beyond,
