Southside Big Idea*
Infrastructure Project
Southside Community Center
#2
The Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority and partners are working to address the shortage of
community recreational spaces in the Southside neighborhood. Young people—around half of whom live
below the poverty line—could benefit from such a space in the heart of their neighborhood as a “home
base” for meeting and hanging out. This multipurpose center could be developed to include play spaces for
athletic competitions and neighborhood events and rented for large gatherings such as family reunions and
community meetings.
Big Ideas are intended to spark discussion and create excitement about potential within the Opportunity
Neighborhoods. These projects and programs are aspirational, with some further along than others. The hope
is that they can help residents reimagine their spaces, consider sustainable ways to advance neighborhood
goals, and inspire tangible ways to focus energies and bring Big Ideas to life.
