ExecutiveOffice of Energy and EnvironmentalAffairs (EEA) issued theirfall guidelines, risk categories andlevels of play.The coronavirus pandemicforced the cancellation of allinterscholastic sports last springbut approval to move forwardwith athletics for the fall came onAug. 18, enabling ADs, superintendentsand their school committeesto proceed with caution.Sports for the fall that are in alower and moderate risk categorycan compete with modifications,but football, competitive cheerleadingand unified basketballare classified as high risk. Thoseteams can play in a “fall 2 season’’that would run from Feb. 22to April 25.Several area ADs revealedtheir plans to proceed for a fallseason that will feature plenty ofchanges and modifications.At Millis, there’ll be boys andgirls varsity and jayvee soccer,boys/girls varsity cross-countryand varsity and jayvee golf.“We’re elated to be taking thenext step towards normalcy,’’said Chuck Grant, the MohawksAD. “Everyone needs sportsback into their routine. The kidsare ready to compete within theguidelines. Many things had tocome together for these opportunitiesto become reality and weappreciate all the effort that wentinto gaining their approval.’’For Millis, the fall 2 season willinclude football and volleyball.“Things will need to continue toimprove for both to become reality,’’Grant said. “If we have abasketball season, that will be agood omen for volleyball. It justmade sense to buy more timefor an inside event to be given achance for circumstances to improvebefore bringing other ‘cohorts’into each others’ buildingsat a time when we’re trying tobring our own students back intothe building.’’Grant said that “since footballis being played in other states,that will provide us with muchneeded guidance and evidenceof the likelihood that football willbe approved for competition inMassachusetts. The numbers areimproving every day so the continuationof that trend in concertwith encouraging national newswould bode well for football’schances.’’At Franklin High, the athleticofferings for each of the fourseasons include: fall — boys andgirls soccer, boys and girls crosscountry,field hockey and golf;winter — boys and girls basketball,boys and girls hockey, wrestling,gymnastics, boys and girlsindoor track, cheerleading andboys and girls swimming; fall2 — football, cheerleading, unifiedbasketball and volleyball;spring — baseball, softball, boysand girls lacrosse, boys and girlstennis, and boys and girls unifiedtrack.Here’s how the Panthers’ AD,Tom Angelo, viewed the modifications:“Clearly, the rules of the gamewill be very different from whatwe’re used to. Although thesenew rules are not very popular,they are in place so our studentathletescan again participate ininterscholastic athletics. Thatsaid, everything is now differentdue to the pandemic. Why wouldathletics be excluded? Our teamswill simply have to learn the newrules, make the necessary adjustments,play to the best of theirability, and represent our communitywith the same Franklinpride as they have done in thepast.’’Matt Baker, Holliston High’sAD, listed all the sports that areslated for all four seasons. Fall 1will include cross-country (boysand girls), field hockey, golf, andsoccer (boys and girls). Winter’sofferings are basketball (boysand girls), cheer, gymnastics, icehockey (boys and girls), indoortrack, swimming and diving,and wrestling. The fall 2 lineupfeatures cheer, football, unifiedbasketball and volleyball. Thespring menu includes baseball,lacrosse (boys and girls), softball,tennis (boys and girls), track andultimate frisbee.Chuck Grant, Millis AthleticDirector.Baker said that he supportsthe decision by the MIAA tomove higher risk sports to fall 2.“We feel this will create a saferenvironment for these sports(cheer, football, unified basketballand volleyball),’’ he noted.“We’ll revisit what’s happeningwith COVID-19 throughoutthe school year. The Tri ValleyLeague has taken the aadditionalstep of moving volleyball to fall2. This was done in an effort tomaintain safety for our students.Also, many schools do not haveuse of their gyms for athletics dueto COVID-19 protocols usingthe gym for other purposes.’’Baker endorses the alterationsthat will allow athletics to continue.“We know these modificationsare changing sports dramaticallybut at least this is creating a situationwhere we can offer studentathletesthe opportunity to playsports during the pandemic,’’ heemphasized. “This is better thanMatt Baker, Holliston AthleticDirector.not having fall sports at all. Ourcoaching staff is looking forwardto being with their teams and tocompete. These types of activitiesare so important for the social/emotionalwell-being of ourstudent-athletes and everyone istrying to be creative in the solutionsto make this happen.’’King Philip Regional willhave soccer, field hockey, crosscountryand golf on the athleticmenu this fall but volleyball, football,cheerleading and unifiedbasketball will be played in thefall 2 season.“We’ve focused on the fallseason and worked to get thatsquared away,’’ said KP ADGary Brown. “As for movingsome of the higher risk sportsto fall 2, it’ll give kids the bestopportunity for the best experience.As we get closer to the fall2 season (starts Feb. 22), we’ll beawaiting the decisions on thosesports.’’Brown is acutely aware thatsports will not look like they didin the past with all the modificationsthe MIAA and the Departmentof Education havemandated but he’s glad there’llbe an opportunity for studentathletesto compete.“The changes will allow studentsto compete safely and that’sthe goal,’’ he said. “It’s a differentapproach. It’s all about providingopportunity. It’ll be greatto get moving again. Great to seeall students getting involved withwhatever their extra-curriculaactivity is. For me, it’ll be rewardingto see kids actively competingand representing KP or whateverschool they play for.’’Brown stressed that “the bottomline is the health and safetyof everyone.’’At Natick High, the fall seasonwill feature boys and girls crosscountry,field hockey, boys andgirls soccer, golf and girls swimmingand diving. The fall 2 seasonwill include girls volleyball,football, cheerleading and unifiedbasketball.Natick’s Athletic Director,Tim Collins, is pleased sports arereturning after a dormant spring.“I’m thrilled athletics will beplayed this fall,’’ he said. “Allof us at Natick High want thechance to compete, hopefullybe healthy and face competitivechallenges with teammates andcoaches.
