Book club
Hot reads and chilled liqueurs...
this months book club’s looking good!
The thrills just keep on coming. Shari Lapena (The Couple Next Door, A Stranger in the House...
LOVE her books) has just released The End of Her, which is tension filled, fast paced,
edge-of-your seat. A recently married and new mum of twin may be struggling with the
disorienting effects of sleep deprivation, but knows one thing is certain... she has everything
she ever wanted. Until a woman from her husband’s past arrives and makes a horrifying
allegation about his first wife. He always claimed her death was an accident - but she says it
was murder. This one’s an all-nighter. Penguin
A missing patient is a hospital ward’s worst nightmare, and the disappearance of a newborn
baby from a maternity ward in a New York hospital creates a city-wide emergency. Then
another kidnapping, and a stabbing, take place... rumours and accusations fly, and a midwife
teams up with a sceptical NYPD detective to solve the case. But the truth is far more twisted
than either of them could ever have imagined. The Midwife Murders by James Patterson
and Richard DiLallo is a thrill-a-minute paperback read. Arrow Books
Mark Billingham‘s Sleepyhead was released in August 2001, flew straight onto the top ten
best seller list, and was the biggest selling debut novel of the year. Cry Baby - the 17th book
in the Tom Thorne series - is its prequel. It’s set way back in 1996, when Thorne a young
detective, haunted by the moment when he ignored his instincts, and how that led to a
horrific crime. Now on his first case - that of a young boy who’s gone missing while playing
in the woods- and Detective Sergeant Tom Thorne is not going to let anything get in the
way of him solving the crime. Another great read from another favourite author. Little, Brown
Time for a little light relief
from murder, mayhem
and mystery. Hello Greta.
She’s flawed. She’s jocular.
And she’s played the part
of the funny fat friend her
entire life. But she’s hiding
insecurities behind her
big smile - because size
doesn’t matter when you’re
having fun, right?. Warm
and wonderfully moving,
Carmel Harrington’s My
Pear-Shaped Life, shows
us that, like Greta’s about
to discover, sometimes
the best moments in life
come when everything’s
gone a bit pear-shaped.
HarperCollins Publishers
There are a few authors who have us leaping for joy when we see a new
release... and Lisa Jewell is right at the top of that list. Gripping, engrossing,
disturbing, her books are thrillers with heart-thumping, unexpected twists
that just take your breath away. Her latest, Invisible Girl, is about a missing
girl, an invisible man, and how we often look in the wrong places for bad
people and not noticing the real predators who walk freely among us in
plain sight. Century
The pay checks are huge. The work exciting. The drinks flow. But people
sneak into the bathroom for a hit of cocaine, people sleep under desks,
and sexual harassment is rife. The Boy’s Club by Erica Katz is set in a
corporate Manhattan law firm... a place where if you don’t turn a blind eye,
the boys’ club is a dangerous place to be. Orion
We’re not serving wine at book club this month. Instead, we’re bringing
out the Limoncello. Why? Because it’s summer and we’re happy and in an
Amalfi kind of mood. Also, a few of the books we’ve chosen are
lip-puckeringly, cheek-suckingly, squeeze-your-eyes-shut scary. So a bit
of a theme going, yes? Our favourite version is Bottega’s Limoncino... you can
find it at good bottle stores, or order online for R325 from takealot.com
quotes from local Karens, including honorary Karen Tannie Evita,
who has written the foreword, this tongue-in-cheek etiquette guide
will not only make you laugh out loud, but will also help you do the
right thing, and do it right. After all, sometimes you might actually
Cape Town and once had a straight blond Karinfringe that reached
Made for
Alison Blair has always been inspired by the environment around her,
taking her cue from circumstance. Maybe that’s what living in the Lowveld
does, it’s something that’s built into the DNA of the people of Mpumalanga.
Ewan and Alison Blair
Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY. Photographer: TANYA ERASMUS
highly successful marketer and
business owner in Mbombela,
Alison is fiercely passionate about
the entrepreneur. At heart,
she has always seen herself
as one, and like every great
entrepreneur, she knows that
failure is a fundamental part
of the journey, simply another
learning curve in the process. It’s the pathway
to self-validation that may very well see zero
satisfaction.
“The marketing industry is very dynamic and
challenging. Which is what I love about it, no day
is ever the same and it keeps you on your toes! It
all starts with a vision and then taking actionable
steps to achieve it. If you keep the end in mind,
then the odd curveball can easily be negotiated
and a solution found and implemented. I love
solving problems and figuring out ways to get
things done, and marketing is certainly all about
that! I’m interested in understanding how people
consume content, especially advertising. The
industry has changed so much since the digital
revolution that we have to adapt or get left behind.
“Covid-19 created a mental shift, one which made
me realise I need to focus on my creativity, to make
brave and bold decisions and generate something
meaningful, for me. We’re always told that there
isn’t a right time to make these massive leaps,
we’re told to be cautious, to think twice,” she smiles.
It was during this time of contemplation that
Alison shifted an exciting concept from ideation to
real life.
“I’m a mother to a unique and amazing little boy,
Ewan. He is 11 years old and he teaches me, on a
daily basis, what being brave really means.” Ewan
smiles up at Alison, a grin that lights up the room.
He has some special needs, which have caused
him to develop later than some kids
his age. “We do not have a formal
diagnosis,” says Alison.
“If you look at a list of characteristics for
syndromes we’ve tested for, he’ll tick
some boxes but not all. And that went
for all the syndromes we were able
to test for. Despite his developmental
delays, Ewan is the most social, friendly
child with an interesting, incredibly
witty sense of humour. I refer to him as
my ‘social secretary’ as he loves to plan
our weekends, he needs to know who
we’re spending time with and exactly
what we’re doing!” she laughs, and
Ewan nods his head in agreement.
“I would prefer some weekends to
just ‘go with the flow’, but that’s not a
concept Ewan understands. Routine
is very important to him and knowing
what lies ahead. He teaches me
lessons that I never knew I needed, like
patience and to live in the moment.”
Back to the topic of living in the
moment, Alison muses about the
future, and the changes she is
making, built on a leap of faith and
the culmination of 20 years of diverse
marketing experience. Say cheese
to Photie, a purely South African
stock image website for marketers
celebrating South Africa, its people
and their creativity. “Photie is a valiant
Africans and the country’s creative
industry,” she explains.
“Bravery isn’t about sitting at a desk,
being time-bound and playing by
the rules, it’s about making time,
especially if it is time with my family. It
will also give me the chance to spend
more time giving back to the local
community through initiatives I am
passionate about, such as The Chicken
Challenge, Child Welfare SA Nelspruit
and Buy Local Lowveld. In the end, the
quality of my life comes down to the
quality of my contribution.”
Photie is a platform giving South
African creatives an opportunity
to earn additional income through
their art, passion and skills. The best
creative work starts with a captivating
image that is, above all, relevant to
its audience. “I have seen the need
for truly authentic SA stock images,
images made for Mzanzi” Alison smiles.
“Photie strives to connect the creators
of high-quality authentic South African
images with a creative industry hungry
to get real.”
The platform is for quality royalty-free
photographs, illustrations and videos
created by passionate, local freelance
photographers, artists and designers.
By building this bridge, Alison hopes
to support and grow the country’s
creative industry. In addition, content
creators enjoy the most competitive
reward for their hard work. “Users
benefit from exceptional talent, in
rands, and not dollars. By choosing
images from Photie’s library, you are
choosing to support local creatives.
In addition, users will benefit from our
library of relevant and unique images
tailored for a South African audience
without breaking the bank.
“Photie is just the start of my journey
towards creating what I refer to as
a ‘freedom business’. What this will
ultimately mean is that I won’t be
desk or time-bound, allowing me
opportunities to travel and experience
more of life on my terms.”
This bold and dynamic woman really
does seem to have it all figured out.
With a strong support system (Alison’s
mother, brother, close family and
friends) and “Team Ewan”, consisting
of Ewan’s headmistress, teachers and
therapists at Flamboyant School in
White River, the sky is the limit. “I’m
inspired and motivated by my possibilities, instead of trying to be like someone
else, I’d like to be better than I was a year ago. I believe that we are not our
circumstances, but rather our possibilities. And I believe that my current earnings
do not define my worth, therefore I always need to value my efforts, work and
myself. After all, self-worth should never be sacrificed for net worth.” We agree, and
we cannot wait to see more!
LEARNING
is the new working
We chat to Kirsten Garbini, founder
and director of Dineo Pact in
Mbombela, about adapting
to the new normal.
ovid-19 has taken
something from all of
us. We must grieve the
losses suffered and
be willing to pick up
the pieces. Just as our
personal lives have been
affected, organisations
too have ground to a halt.
Productivity has plummeted, leaving
the economy unstable and jobs
vulnerable. The world has been
disrupted, forcing us inside and leaving
us longing for the way things were.
As we grapple with lockdown and
its effects, leaders are challenged to
reinvent themselves in the face of
all that has been undone. They can
no longer rely on the methods and
modes of yesterday and must turn to
learning as the new working.
“The top experts in the world are
ardent students. The day you stop
learning, you are definitely not an
expert,” says author Brendan Burchard.
Covid-19 has demanded that
organisations adjust their approach
and develop a desire to learn at their
heart. This must course through the
entire organisation. While it begins
with the leadership and flows to
employees, this does not go far
enough. This desire must also flow
from the employees back into the
organisation. Organisations and their
citizens need an appetite for learning
and to incorporate this into their
workflow. Learning cannot be reduced
to a no-impact checklist that facilitates
specific outcomes, but instead must
soak through the entire organisation.
Its ecology must practically champion
this change. Organisations need to
tailor their experiences of learning
to the practical realities of the new
environment of daily work.
There is no point in being greatly
equipped to deal with a world that no
longer exists, and learning to restore
the past is not enough. To learn is
to be curious about that which you
do not yet know. It takes courage to
be educated about a better world
and then create it. It takes resolve to
unlearn the things that have made
life cold and lonely. We now look for a
new world free from the never-ending
ladder of external success. The time
where women are not defined by who
they are, and instead are judged by
how well they wear the mask of a man
when leading, has passed.
To learn is to be
curious about
that which you
do not yet know
Disruption is a painful process for
individuals and organisations alike.
Everyone has lost something and
filling the gaps will not be easy. We
cannot rely on outdated notions any
longer. Instead, learning is the new
working. This journey will naturally be
accompanied by growing pains. If it is
successful, it will birth a world better
than the one before. Female leaders
hold the future in their hands.
Shades of summery
Masks and facials and pretty new collections on the beauty scene this October
Twist and glow
Since we’re in an Isle of Capri mood (we can dream!) we’re obviously
obsessed with this new, limited edition summer collection from
Clarins. The Clarins Bronzing Compact (R485) is inspired by
Mediterranean style... it’s all warm shades of summer with sun kissed
skin. The trio of matte bronzing shades can be used together, or
individually, on the face and body to give a warm and natural sun
kissed glow. The Clarins Twist To Glow - this one in Coral Happy - is
a 2-in-1 powder which illuminates the eyes and cheekbones
in a twist of colour. With a grill that transforms the
solid texture into an ultra-fine powder that is easy to
blend, this shimmer powder captures the light and
enhances radiance. Look out, too, for the Twist To Glow
with Clarins Lip Twist Duo - a 2-in-1 product that
transforms the lips in just two steps. On one side, a
coloured felt give the lips a matte finish. On the other,
a top-coat balm perfects the colour with a sparkling
shine. Doubly as pretty. Lovely shades to suit every mood.
R320. And not new, but we can’t get through summer
without Clarins Water Lip Stain - customisable and longwearing
colour, for a barely-there feel. Lips look natural,
seemingly tattooed with colour like an ink. Get one in Rose
Hello Summer. Hello radiance!
Here are two brand-new-on-the-beauty-shelves products that are soon going to be
top of the must-use list. For those of you who’re keen welcome the new season in with
a glowing, radiant skin... SVR Vitamin C Antioxidant Foam Mask. This micro-peeling
mask is a wonderful boost for skin radiance. With 25 per cent optimised vitamin C (a
powerful ingredient that protects against aging and illuminates the skin), combined
with retexturizing, moisturising and plumping ingredients, the mask exfoliates, smooths
and illuminates the skin’s complexion, and reduces signs of aging. We fancy the aerosol
format, too. R750. Also look out for SVR Microgommage Lift – which promises the
pleasure of having skin like new again! This exfoliating mask, with vitamin A, 0.1 per cent
pure retinol, volcanic sand and musk rose oil, targets the accumulation of dead cells and
signs of ageing such as uneven skin tone, imperfections, enlarged pores and wrinkles. Use
it regularly and results should include clearer, more radiant skin, unblocked pores, reduced
unevenness, and wrinkle reduction. R475. Details: Available at riekiemedaesthetic.co.za,
absoluteskin.co.za or shopfomo.com and at selected beauty salons.
From mask-related skin
irritations to nappy rash...
Along with your sanitiser spray, keep
these two Eau Thermale Avéne
essentials in your bag, available at
Mopani.co.za. We’re already fans of the
Thermal Spring Water, which is excellent
for sensitive, intolerant and allergic skin.
It soothes, softens, and restores skin’s
natural balance, and promotes skin
healing. It’s used to combat facial redness,
to calm skin irritation due to sunburn,
razer burn or after a facial or surgery, to
calm and soothe nappy rash, or simply
to cool yourself down while travelling or
playing sport. Now we’ve discovered the
new Eau Thermale Avéne Cicalfate+
restorative and protective cream. Use
after the spring water for immediately
soothing. And it’s great for everything
from mask-related skin irritations,
superficial cuts and burns, localized
dryness, after treatments laser and
chemical peel. It’s safe for everyone, from
babe to adult, and can be used on body,
face and lips. You’ll find both on eauthermale-avene.co.za,
the spring water
ranges from R85 for a small handbag
spray to R229 for a family-friendly size;
Cicalfate costs R209.
Beets. Carrots. Barley. Take your beauty cue from nature
We’re fanatical about wearing our masks (and hope you are too). But what we’re
not fans of are the breakouts they cause, particularly for those who’re already
suffering from oily, problematic skin. The Placecol Cleansing Chlorophyll Facial
is rich in chlorophyll derived from young Barley plants, which helps to
detoxify the skin and decrease surface shine, while also reducing congestion and
inflammation. Combined with High Frequency Treatment, this facial destroys the
bacteria responsible for breakouts and combats congestion. With powerful antioxidants
to increase the skin’s immunity and help reduce free radical damage,
the result is visibly refreshed, clearer skin, available at Mopani.co.za. If you just feel
your skin is a little tired (aren’t we all?), there’s a Oxygenating Vitamin A Facial -
highly effective for revitalising and boosting tired skin. Naturally rich in Vitamin A
(hello carrots), it tightens and firms the skin, stimulating micro-circulation which
increases oxygen and nutrients to the cells. This facial is rich in powerful antioxidants
to help protect the skin from harmful free radical damage, a major cause
of ageing. Then there’s the Betanin Hydration Facial... an intensely cooling and
hydrating facial which contains Betanin, a potent anti-oxidant that protects cells
from free radical damage and gives beetroot its deep red colour. Rich in Vitamin
C to boost immunity and stimulate cell function, plus generous quantities of
essential skin health minerals, such as iron and folate, and with beetroot’s deeply
detoxifying properties, this facial leaves the skin feeling refreshed, renewed and
energised. These facials cost from R475 to R525. Details: For your closest Placecol
The Berry Body and Skin Clinic
originated from the well-established
practice of Dr Berry Dermatology and
Berry Cosmetic, situated in the heart of
Mbombela at 10 Ferreira Street.
The need was recognised to offer the
usual, but also the latest and mostadvanced
available body and skincare
technology to improve overall wellbeing.
Advances in dermatology have filtered
through and have changed the way
in which skincare, female wellness and
antiageing are practised, now in a noninvasive
way.
The use of radiotherapy and LED
light treatments are already changing
the shape of the cosmetic industry,
leading to better results with different
skin conditions such as acne, scarring,
pigmentation, rosacea and ageing.
Berry Body offer first-class, exceptional
services, including advanced skincare,
injectables, facials, massages,
Skincare ranges we offer include Essel,
NeoStrata, Heliocare, MD Lash Factor
and Pro-active Liquid Collagen.
Why is skincare important to us...
Life expectancy is increasing year
by year and given the advances in
antiageing medication coming to the
fore, it is becoming more and more
important to protect your skin in
order to look youthful for as long as
possible... if not forever.
The sooner you start looking after your
skin, the better, but it is never too late
to get going with a proper skincare
regimen. The basics are still the use of
the correct routine, including a facial
cleanser, the correct night cream and
most importantly, a good sunscreen.
The most recent idea with regards
to good skincare is to optimise your
products and combine them with alternating treatments such as Dermalux Flex
LED, Exilis Ultra 360, mesotherapy and chemical peels. We are the first clinic in
Mpumalanga to offer the Dermalux Flex and the Exilis Ultra 360, and we have
received excellent results with these.
A success story
Vanessa Roets
Someone once said, “Behind every successful
woman is herself”, and the same can be said for
Vanessa Roets. Vanessa joined Essel Products in
2007 after working as a personal assistant for a
financial planner. This was a huge shift for her
as she was now faced with the challenge of not
only managing the entire Mpumalanga, but
establishing herself in an entirely new field.
Vanessa’s driving force has always been her love
of the product. Essel Products is a South African
pharmaceutical production company with four
skincare brands, covering the skin’s various needs.
Essel caters to a variety of clients; namely medical
doctors, aesthetic practioners, beauty salons and
spas. The effectiveness of the products has led to
not only national popularity, having numerous
professional skincare awards, but has also claimed
international admiration in South America,
Australia, America and Europe.
A huge contributor to Essel’s success has been
the dedication of the distributors who made it all
possible, Vanessa being one of these contributors.
She has been appointed as the top-performing
distributor in South Africa twice. She has also
established herself in the industry in Mpumalanga,
being known for her excellent client relationships
and extensive knowledge of the products. In
Vanessa’s eyes, no task is too big or too small, and
her attention to detail is what puts her a step
above the rest. Although she is a natural achiever
and excellent businesswoman, she has also
established herself in her family, being a mother
of two boys, Shimon (24) and Reinhardt (21),
and a wife to Anton Roets, a financial planner for
Momentum. The best interests of her family have
always been a priority for Vanessa, making her an
outstanding multitasker.
For Essel Products, her success in all aspects of her
life has made her an awesome example, as well
as a role model to current and future distributors,
thus she is a treasured asset. To end off, in the
words of Serena Williams, “Every woman’s success
should be an inspiration to another. We are
strongest when we cheer each other on”.
Vanessa’s business motto is : Be yourself!!! Energetic,
excellent, client- focused service. Details: 084 626 4007
Lockdown locks
Salons are open (three cheers!) but for some of us, a weekly or even
monthly visit isn’t possible. Here are the products we’re using at home.
Two Oceans has an excellent, affordable range of hair
care products, and during lockdown we’ve been using
Two Oceans Keratin + Argan Range - Hydra Smooth.
There’s a smooth shampoo which hydrates, shines and
softens your hair and scalp. Infused with antioxidants to
deeply condition and revive your hair for soft, glossy results,
we found our hair soft and moisturised. The conditioner is
infused with vegetable-derived keratin and argan oil, which
is naturally rich in vitamins E, F, A & C, so helps to replenish
and condition. R99.95 each for a massive 1000ml, from
Dis-Chem, Pick n Pay and Checkers.
Vegan, made with 100 per cent
natural cold-pressed oils, free
from all things artificial... the new
Nature Box range is really fabulous.
Priced from R100 from takealot.com
If you want to look as if you’ve just
stepped out of the salon, you really
do need to use the right tools.
And there’s nothing better than
the new ghd Helios professional
hairdryer. Light and fast, it offers
ultra-powerful drying and ultimate
styling control... exactly what we
want. Features include technology
for reduced frizz and flyaways, a
cool shot button for a quick blast
of air to fix your style, a contoured
nozzle for a concentrated airflow
- and it’s really quiet, too. It comes
in four colours - black, navy, white
and this rich, deep burgundy, and
costs R2900 from hair salons. An
exceptionally good buy... great
quality, and these dryers last forever.
And while we’re using ghd (at every
opportunity!), we rave, too, about
the Heat Protect Spray (R280), the
Smooth and Finish Serum (a lifesaver
for those of us with frizz, R280), and the
classic Paddle Brush, for mid to long
hair... its broad, flat base lets you blowdry
large sections of hair smooth and
straight (R400). All from ghdhair.com
Tastes from a
Levantine kitchen
When life gives you lemons... you’d better hope it gives you chickpeas too.
Then, with just a few more ingredients, you’re set for a celebratory feast. Dip into the
new Hummus to Halva cookbook for the most delish dishes for a spring party.
Mint & Ginger Lemonade
Easy to make and really refreshing on a
hot summery day, this drink is great for
parties, too. Just scale up the quantities
and, for those who like an extra hit, try
it with a splash of white rum.
(Makes: 6 glasses. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook:
5 minutes. Chill: 2–3 hours)
Garlic & Lemon Sauce
This is a mixture that adds a different
dimension to any hummus dish. We
don’t put garlic in our hummus but we
love drizzling this sauce over the top
– the acid from the lemons together
with the bitterness of the garlic and
spiced saltiness of the pickled chillies
make it irresistible.
(Serves 4. Makes 150ml . Prep: 5 minutes.
Stand: 30 minutes)
You’ll need:
Juice of 3 lemons; 3 garlic cloves,
very finely chopped; 2 pickled chilli
peppers, drained and finely chopped;
sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
To serve:
Hummus and warm pita breads
To make:
Put all the ingredients into a bowl
and using a fork, stir together to mix.
Alternatively, put in a jam jar, screw on
the lid and shake well.
Leave to stand for 30 minutes or so for
the flavours to develop, then strain.
Drizzle over plates of hummus and
serve with warm pita breads.
You’ll need:
150g granulated sugar; 150ml water;
70g piece fresh root ginger, scrubbed
and sliced (there’s no need to peel
first); juice of 8 lemons
Compiled by: KYM ARGO
To serve:
Chilled water and ice cubes; 6 fresh
mint sprigs; wafer-thin strips of fresh
root ginger, cut with a vegetable
peeler (optional)
To make:
Put the sugar, water and ginger into
a small saucepan and heat over a
low heat, stirring until the sugar has
dissolved. Bring to the boil, then take
off the heat, cover with a lid or plate
and leave to cool at room temperature
for two to three hours for the flavours
to develop. Strain the lemon juice into
a large measuring jug – you should
have just over 400ml. Strain in the
ginger syrup and stir to mix, then top
up to 1.7 litres with chilled water and
ice cubes. Stir together, then pour into
6 glasses and add a mint sprig and
strip of ginger, if using, to each.
From Hummus to Halva... hello spring food
Winter’s been great... all heavy stews and lovely warm puds
with custard or cream. But we have to admit, we love it when
the weather turns a little warmer, and spring is a fabulous
season ... all new beginnings and light food and dining al
fresco. Hummus to Halva is the most wonderful cookbook.
Crammed with recipes from a Levantine kitchen, it’s been
compiled by Ronen Givon – born and raised on a kibbutz
in Israel and, he confesses, obsessed with hummus, and
Christian Mouysset – who didn’t taste hummus until he
went to uni ... then he ate it with anything and everything
he could. The book is just a fantastic celebration of food to
share. There’s hummus every which way (with mushrooms
or slow cooked chunky beef (Christian’s favourite dish in
the book), with lamb and pine nuts or Moroccan meatballs.
There are lovely salads – tabbouleh and fattoush, and breads
and dips and gorgeous labaneh – sour yoghurt cheese. The
halva cookies, cardamom coffee and ouzo and grapefruit
slush round off a delicious book. Food to make, to share, to
celebrate. Published by Pavilion.
We do drink pink... all Summer long
Oh... we do so drink pink. Particularly if it’s this lovely De Krans
Pinotage Rosé. De Krans Wines is in the warm Klein Karoo, giving
its grapes more intense fruit flavours, and the Pinotage Rosé 2020
- all delicately light pink with a refreshing, crisp acidity - has loads
of red fruit flavours on the palate. This wine is currently the fastest
growing wine in the De Krans Wine portfolio and for good reason
- since changing to the Pinotage grape around three years ago,
the wine has quietly been racking up multiple awards... winning
golds and double golds left, right and centre. You’ll find it for
around R68 a bottle. • De Krans The Original Cape Pink is made
from traditional port varieties Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and
Tinta Amarela and is a wonderful, vibrant, rose petal pink portstyle
wine, with soft, elegant, red fruit flavours of strawberries and
cherries, and a hint of candy floss. It’s really sensational on crushed
ice, but can also be used creatively in cocktails. It costs around
A TASTE EXPERIENCE
effectively in a way that builds the other.
We studied together, we work together and
now we are married - and we love it.
“I am good in the cold kitchen (salads,
pastry and such) while Patrice is excellent
in the hot kitchen (curries, main course
and meat). Everything is fresh. Natural
and authentic - no packets of this, that or
the other, and we source everything from
local suppliers. And no microwave heating
either!” she laughs.
Monique adds that, “We are meticulous
in terms of our specialities, but we have
enough insight to also support and
enhance the capacity of the other to create
stunning dishes with love and goodness.”
Last year, she accepted a challenge and
entered the Melktertdag competition, in
the professional category, with a traditional
recipe. She added a French twist with
freshly ground nutmeg, and she won!
“I am just me - food perfectionist, stubborn
but peaceful, and if I don’t cook, I rest. But
even when I do, I am thinking about food,
trends and how to improve what I - we - do.”
Oh, and she loves talking, a lot, adds Patrice.
“I love Italian food, like pastas and salads,”
says Monique. “I hate service that is not up
to standard - it gets me edgy in no time. At
the other end of the spectrum, I am just so
grateful for the talents and opportunities
that God has blessed me with, and the
ability to stay true to who I am and who I
want to be.”
“The challenges that we all face at this
time seem to have unearthed compassion
towards one another, and this is something
we both enjoy and appreciate deeply,” says
Patrice. “Monique is the patient one - I am
not - that’s why I love the hot kitchen,” he
laughs. Monique is an extrovert, Patrice the
introvert, and like salt and pepper, together
they create magic, authentic food, and
dining experiences that nourish both body
and soul.
Monique is a French toast fine artist. “It is
something that one can eat any time of
the day and there are literally hundreds
of things one can do to up the status
of French toast; a humble and often
underrated dish,” she says.
Monique is a born and bred
Nelspartan. She attended Nelspruit
a journey which included studying at
the Capitol Hotel School in Pretoria.
Both she and Patrice went on to work
at various restaurants, in the hotel
industry and at catering companies
but eventually, in 2019, the dream
opportunity - for both of them (and
they’ve been together for eight
years) - of doing their own thing,
manifested. And they are deeply
grateful. Yin and yang has found its
niche within their love for each other
and the food they prepare.
“Being a chef is hard work, long
hours and not necessarily always
easy, but working for oneself
brings peacefulness within and the
opportunity to really live and work
your passion - which for us, is being
chefs. It is just such a wonderful
privilege,” says Monique.
“One of the greatest negatives of
this profession is that time to spend
with family and friends is limited, but
fortunately for us we understand the
dedication and demand required and
we are able to support each other
A POT OF
SHOPPING LIST
• Terracotta pot
• Some colourful serviettes
• Chalk paint sealer
• Prestik
• Chalk paint and brush.
Text and photographer: MATTHYS FERREIRA
Step 2: Your serviette has three layers.
You only need a single one. To separate
the layers, take a small piece of Prestik
between your thumb and index
finger (both hands) and then dab your
serviette from either side on the same
spot. Pull your hands apart - this will
separate the layers, make sure to remove
both the white ones and use only the
top patterned layer.
Step 4: Then carefully stretch
the serviette on this.
Step 6: Once you have covered the chosen
surface, apply another thin layer of sealer and
allow it to dry.
Step 7: Once dry, use a fine sandpaper to
smooth out any irregularities.
Step 8: Apply another layer of sealer and
allow to dry. This will improve the pot’s
resistance to water and sun.
Step 9: Plant your chosen flower/plant/
succulent - add some small stones to round
it off neatly.
Step 10: Place your pot in an appropriate
spot and enjoy watching it grow.
Step 1: Paint your pot with a
neutral colour and allow it to dry.
Step 3: Paint a layer of sealer onto the
part of your pot where you want to
add the patterned serviette.
Step 5: To ease the flattening of the
serviette and to prevent the sealer,
which will press through it, from
creating a mess, cover the piece of
serviette with Glad Wrap. This will enable
you to smooth it out with ease and
without fuss. Repeat this process to
cover the surface around the pot with
the serviette.
Woo bees with a
pink rose bush
Did you know that pink (as well as
white, and yellow single and semidouble)
roses are magnets for bees?
With their exposed stamens and pistils,
the pollen is always fresh, and the bees
love it. Because roses have such a
long flowering season, there are
always flowers, and pollen, for
the bees. Bonus... they attract
butterflies, too. Lovely!
Gloria Mthunzi (LUDbabfil) is a
Ludwig bred rose, that is a vigorous,
tall and upright growing hybrid tea
with exquisitely shaped blooms in
a blend of orange, pink and cream
shades. What’s to like? Well, the large
blooms hark back to the days when
perfect exhibition-shaped blooms
were popular. The blooms are carried
on long stems and last well in the
vase, so this is a very good garden
cut-flower variety. As for garden uses
plant it towards the back of a rose
border or group three or five together,
with lower growing roses planted in
front. The plants will also stand out as
a feature in a mixed border.
50 shades of pink...
What’s the most popular rose colour? Pink, by
a pretty mile. And while we haven’t actually
counted, there could very well be 50 or more
shades of pink roses. There’s certainly a pink
for every mood ... soft and dreamy, playful and
happy, flamboyant and feisty.
Here are the newest pink roses:
Pink Polo is a tall, vibrant pink rose that opens
from a classically shaped bud into a sumptuous
quartered bloom, the size of a side plate! The
lightly fragrant blooms are carried on long,
straight stems ... this is a really lovely picking
rose. The bush grows to just above shoulder
height. It is a white ribbon rose, and a portion
of the sales go to CANSA Paarl.
Manuela Crabbia is a nostalgia rose with
huge blooms on strong stems that display
many shades of pink. The silvery-pink broad
outer petals are edged with carmine, and as
the rose unfolds, the centre becomes a soft
salmon pink.
Colette Stella is the epitome of a dreamy
pink rose, with a distinct rosy perfume. As the
many-petalled blooms open into an antique
cup shape, the petals become a deeper, warm
pink. The two-metre high bush flowers from
top to bottom.
Nautica offers just a whisper of pink as an
undertone to the soft lavender shades that
become a silvery sheen as the rose opens. This
is a classical hybrid-tea, with long lasting large
blooms on a tall, neatly upright growing bush.
It provides an endless supply of blooms.
Gloria Mthunzi has exquisitely shaped,
exhibition-class hybrid tea blooms in a blend
of pink, orange, and cream. The rose is tall and
vigorous, standing out in a mixed border.
The glorious Pink Polo
Fresh ideas for garden roses
Mix roses with grasses for a natural look, one that
brings movement and texture. Bushy, free flowering
groundcover Sunsation roses, Deloitte and
Touche, My Granny and Butterfly Kisses go well
with compact ornamental grasses like Carex China
Blue, Carex Amazon Mist, Carex Oshimensis, and
Juncus Blue.
Feed body and soul... grow roses and veggies together.
Plant leafy veggies as a border for roses and under
standard roses or use tall roses as a backdrop for herb
and veggie beds. They all like the same treatment - full
sun, fertile soil, and regular watering.
Turn your palisade fence into a feature by espaliering
roses against it. Tie the stems of a climbing rose in
a fan shape onto the palisade. The trick of tying the
stems that way forces the rose to flower all along each
stem. Result, a wall of roses.
What’s new in roses
Eco-chic: no need to spray for fungus disease. That
is the priority for modern roses that are bred with
disease-resistance in their genes. Look out for the
‘ladybird’ logo that indicates the Eco-chic diseaseresistant
roses.
Drought-tolerant: roses that can withstand irregular
or limited watering are those with spreading bushy
growth that shades their powerful, extensive roots.
They still produce beautiful pickable blooms on
shorter stems. The new group name for them is
Stamina roses.
Easier, quicker rose care with controlled release
fertilisers and long-lasting pesticides. Controlled
release Vigolonger fertiliser provides a continual,
steady release of nutrition throughout summer. Dig
it in at root level after pruning. Koinor is a drench that
keeps roses free of sucking insects, especially thrips
and aphids for up to six months.
HOMESCHOOLING
pros & cons
With the onset of lockdown, homeschooling rapidly
became the educational vehicle of choice for many South
Africans, for a number of reasons.
In some cases, this was simply the final push; mainstream
schooling isn’t always the ideal option for every child and
parents who have been toying with the idea may well
have seen this as the time to make the leap. Different
people will consider homeschooling for various reasons,
for example private school fees can be prohibitive, and
government schools often lack the personal touch due to
larger classes. Homeschooling means an end to bullying,
more flexibility for both the kids and parents, school safety
and the fact that you can tailor your child’s learning to suit
their aptitude.
Advantages
Responsibility
When they are being homeschooled, their success - or
lack of - is to a large extent in the learner’s own hands.
Assignments must still be completed within a specific
time frame, but there is no teacher policing homework or
deadlines.
Time
One of the major benefits of homeschooling is that your
time is your own; you decide when and where you will
be teaching your children. You can structure your holiday
times to suit your schedule (going away out of season
has many benefits), make appointments around your
timetable without needing to make special arrangements
with your school, and schedule your class times to best
suit your child - just like adults, some kids work better later
in the day.
Social integration
It’s a misconception that children who are homeschooled
miss out on socialisation. They can take part in sporting
activities, field trips, join clubs or groups that are centred
around specific interests that appeal to them, such as a
photography, birding or hiking club. Bullying is also not an
issue.
Adaptability
There is complete freedom in homeschooling, you set
the bar on how to teach and what to teach. You can
encourage a specific interest in your child, developing and
playing to their strengths, customising how they learn to
suit their needs. Taking them to the Kruger National Park
for the day can be part of a lesson,
as can spending time in the Lowveld
Botanical Garden or Sudwala Caves.
The sky is the limit.
One-on-one focus
Another big advantage of homeschooling
is that your child is not part
of a classroom of other kids, and the
focus can be on them completely.
You can tailor your curriculum to suit
them specifically, slowing down when
they get stuck or don’t understand
something, giving extra attention to
tricky bits, or moving quickly through
work they have mastered.
Family bonding
It goes without saying that when
your kid is being homeschooled, you
are there for every milestone they
undergo. You won’t miss out on any of
their important moments and the time
spent together during the schooling
process strengthens the bond being
parent and child.
Disadvantages
Adjustment
The process of moving your
children from a traditional school
to homeschooling can be stressful,
you are never sure if it’s the right
decision and it may seem like
quite a big leap. Finding out your
curriculum choices and deciding
which school to go with can be
challenging, there are so many
options out there and you need to
find the one that is right for you.
Also, amending your mindset from
a rigid classroom scenario to the
more relaxed, customised learning
environment can be quite an
adjustment.
Apprehension
Taking your child’s education - of
the most crucial of their building
blocks - into your own hands is
a huge responsibility; one that
many parents might feel is a task
too big and too important to
leave to the inexperienced. It can
be overwhelming, and the parent
must ensure that it is the right
decision; the bottom line is that
homeschooling is not for everyone.
Lifestyle
Deciding to homeschool could
have an impact on how you have
lived your life up until now, and
Covid-19 has affected everyone
in some way. Perhaps one of
the breadwinners lost their job,
or schooling has become too
expensive, but whatever the reason,
if you decide to homeschool it
means that changes will have to be
made. A designated area must be set
aside as a “classroom”, and set times
for schoolwork and learning need
to be decided on and adhered to,
kids need routine, and also
supervision. A little patience and
understanding will go a long way
towards making the transition easier
for both you and your child.
This project is run by LES and TRAC
finances it in numerous schools along
the N4.
From assisting 40 pupils at the start
of our partnership with LES in 2015,
TRAC’s e-learning initiative is currently
available at nine schools with 13
maths and 10 science classes. More
than 7 000 learners, from grades eight
to 12, are being assisted through this
programme, which also offers teacher
development to all beneficiary schools.
It works through a remote system
which connects pupils from rural
and underperforming schools,
training centres and boardrooms by
using laptops, desktops, interactive
whiteboards, desktop sharing and
audio/video streaming to Ligbron
High School. This enables the educator
Trans African Concessions, aka TRAC, manages the N4 Toll Route between
Tshwane and Maputo. We are the caretaker of this road and are therefore
responsible for designing, building and operating it until the concession
contract comes to an end in 2028, after which it will be transferred to its
owners, the South African and Mozambican governments.
The communities along the Maputo Corridor are valuable to TRAC and
our community social investment (CSI) programme ensures that we
focus on key development issues along the route. That is why one of our
key CSI portfolios is education.
The importance of education in South Africa cannot be overlooked.
For this reason, we have dedicated much time and finances to provide
platforms to assist learners and facilities in dire need. Our support is
varied and we are involved in projects ranging from building schools in
partnership with the Department of Education, funding initiatives such
as the Penreach TRAC N4 Asifundze (Let’s Read) Literacy Programme and
implementing remote teaching and learning programmes such as the
Ligbron E-learning System (LES). The latter assists high school pupils with
The importance
of education in
South Africa
cannot be
overlooked
The national lockdown this year
caused major challenges to education
institutions and learners throughout
our route. But it has not deterred
Ligbron from continuing to assist
the children on the programme.
It continued to offer lessons to
matriculants on various platforms
such as YouTube and TV channels. It
also created a cell phone application
for matriculants that focused on
quality educational maths and science
material for grades 11 and 12.
The benefits of the Ligbron/TRAC
e-learning programme became
evident during the past few months
as schools throughout South Africa
rode the Covid-19 tsunami. Suikerland
Secondary School in Malalane is one
of the schools that benefited from the
initiative during the national lockdown,
by using the technology at hand
to keep its learners up to date. The
school has two maths and two science
classrooms and during the pandemic,
one teacher, Thokozani Mthewthwa,
went the extra mile to ensure that the
matriculants received all the academic
support possible.
Thokozani teaches maths and life
sciences at the FET (grades 10 to 12),
and has been a liaison educator for the
University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)
Targeting Talent Programme (TTP)
since 2007.
He says teaching at Suikerland has
been an amazing and challenging
journey. “I have been able to teach the
pupils and other educators how to
use the e-learning equipment, and its
benefits are obvious. The end results
have been amazing and are evident in
the overall performance of the school.”
According to Thokozani, the greatest
challenge during lockdown was the
time lost. This added pressure to both
the learners and teachers. However, as
an innovative and passionate educator,
he did not let the lockdown status quo
get him down and simply adjusted
to the pressure and began to teach
his learners online. While the school
was closed, he used WhatsApp and
the Ligbron app so that no time was
wasted.
“I strongly believe that this will assist
the pupils in achieving their greatest
academic potential, regardless of
Covid-19. The digital era is here and it
is always good to adapt. Technology
is our new normal and therefore our
learners should be taught with it
because that is what they understand
and are interested in,”
he says.
Another venture that Babs carries close to
his heart was the rebuilding of Cashbuild
in Mbombela. “We had to demolish the
build it up from scratch. It was definitely an
interesting situation,” this big man laughs. He
is also extremely proud to add his name to the
exceptional Voltex building in the city.
Some of his other projects that stand out include
specialised blasting work on the Old Pretoria
It is obvious that there is nothing plain or
mediocre about Babs, and that the way he
tackles his projects is simply a reflection of
how he handles life in general - with gusto and
passion. It comes as no surprise then that one of
way to make it work.”
As owner of the company Bulectric,
that is exactly how Babs had handled
to his passionate and goal-orientated nature is most certainly the Bulec Park
townhouse complex in Mbombela built on the corner of Dr Enos Mabuza Drive
and the Barberton Road. At first glance, one cannot imagine that anyone could
build anything on that inhospitable mountain rock, yet Babs and his Bulectric
team managed it in less than two years.
“It was not easy, in fact, that project was probably one of the greatest challenges
of my career so far.” Yet it was one of his proudest moments. “Nobody wanted to
build there, or take on something of that magnitude. But you know, I have never
been afraid of taking on a difficult task.”
Babs admits that the Bulec Park project brought out the obstinate and stubborn
side of his nature. “That mountain was a big issue, a big challenge, and required
meticulous planning. Yet, look at it; there the complex stands today and I take
red Ferrari. A fast car for a man who lives life
in the fast lane. As a self-confessed adrenalin
junkie, no other vehicle would suit Babs’
needs.
Bulectric has been synonymous with the
Lowveld since 1980, when he started doing
electrical work in Mbombela. The company
soon grew in leaps in bounds, mainly due to
the thoroughness and detail that he put in all
his projects.
An attribute that all of his friends and
business associates agree on, is that he is
loyal, and will continue to support people
once a relationship has been established.
“Yes, it’s true, I will continue to use the same
suppliers granted they give me quality. I
believe that once a relationship is formed,
you should continue to work at it and build
on it so that it becomes a mutual, respectful
journey.”
It is for that reason that Babs has always used
the same architect, and also why he has
never wavered from BUCO since it opened
its doors, also in 1980, in Brown Street in
Mbombela. BUCO was then known as
Laeveld Bou, and Babs struck up a friendship
with Callie Olivier. Callie played a leading role
for 40 years in BUCO Nelspruit’s history. When
Laeveld Bou migrated into BUCO Nelspruit,
Babs simply continued his loyalty and has
now worked closely for 22 years with Pottie
my bike. I have been involved with Zwelisha Cycling Club in
the KaBokweni area for a long time, as well as the Ride For
Rhino/Project Rhino. I rode over 1 000km raising money for
this initiative. We also do a yearly 340km one-day cycle to
raise awareness and funds.”
Sponsored by Mopani, Hennie played rugby before
deciding he wanted a bit more adventure and exploration
to his life. “I’ve been mountain biking since 2004, a decision
helped along by the fact that my friend was the manager
of a bike shop and assisted with the gear, the bike and
accessories,” he smiles. “Mountain biking has so much to
offer: to have fun outdoors with friends, to be out in the
forest exploring and to get the best views... It has become
a lifestyle now and I love every moment of it! Cycling is
for everyone, it is for friends and family... It is great for your
health and good for anyone who wants to get their fitness
back.”
There are different budget levels if you decide to take up
this sport, although it is generally accepted that cycling can
become quite pricey. Starting out, however, needn’t cost
the earth. “You would need a mountain bike, helmet, shoes,
sunglasses, and cycling kit gear. The cost for the entry level
mountain bike would be around R7 500, and the rest would
cost you around R3 500 for shoes and helmet etc.” The
Lowveld is also the ideal place to cycle. We have Mankele
MTB Park situated at Sudwala, MTO trails in White River,
then the Kaapsehoop area has many routes, and the tracks
in Sabie and Barberton are endless and a joy to ride.
“There are many benefits to mountain biking,” says Hennie.
“It is great for your heart health - cardiovascular training
with good, all round rests in between, such as when you
are on the downhills. It’s also a good sport for anyone who
has come back from an injury or who has gone for an
operation and needs to get back into fitness slowly. Cycling
has no big impact on joints, and the benefits far outweigh
many other sports.”
The romance of a safari
Leadwood Villa,
Luxe
safari
A once-in-a-lifetime
offer at what is arguably
the finest safari lodge
in the country.
Thornybush’s Saseka
Tented Camp is, quite
simply, beyond perfect!
Let’s be honest. It’s been a long, hard slog this year. Lockdown. Curfews.
Restrictions. But now travel’s open. We can cross borders and head off to
hotels and guest houses and lodges. And we can have a glass of wine
when we get there. Life is good. And particularly good, we have to tell
you, if the escape you’ve planned is to Saseka Tented Camp.
The jewel in the crown of the Thornybush collection of lodges,
an escape here is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. Not only because it’s
sensationally beautiful, but also because of the special end-of-lockdown
rates ... it’s one of the few times - heck, perhaps the only time - this lodge
will be South African friendly, cost wise.
So what’s so special? Designed by architects and designers Silvio Rech
and Lesley Carstens, the lodge cleverly and seamlessly combines classical
style with cutting-edge design, and takes attention to detail to a whole
new level. From the roof over the massive, tiered deck which mimics
the dappled light of a tree canopy to the botanical prints on the tents’
ceilings, which, besides being aesthetically pleasing, also educate since
they include the Latin names.
The colours used throughout the lodge delight and surprise... although
they shouldn’t, since they reflect the hues of the surrounding bush.
Think ivory for the environmentally-friendly flooring that mimics the
colour of the sand in the river below, dark olive, sage and apple from the
Jackalberry, Apple Leaf and Leadwood trees, and occasionally touches of
pink, picked up from the flowers in the area.
The main area, with a sexy little bar and wide open deck, overlooks the
dry, seasonal Monwana riverbed, and has comfy intimate areas for sitting
and doing as little as possible, and dining tables set along the edge so
you don’t miss the ellies stroll past while you’re lingering over breakfast.
Glamping is taken to luxe new heights in the tents... it’s all eye-catching
black mosquito nets, draped floor to ceiling windows, bespoke furniture,
a romantic bath and adventurous outdoor rainfall shower, and each
with a private deck and plunge pool. It would be unusual for you not to
sometime during the night hear the low grunts and moans of a lion or
the whooping call of a hyena.
For groups of up to six, there’s an uber luxury, private Villa, with its own
central lounge, dining area, pool and an outdoor area which you’ll find
it difficult to tear yourselves away from. Villa guests also get their own
private game vehicle and chef, and children are welcome. Massive spoil!
Meals, too, are created to surprise... so dinner may be around a fire in the
river bed with traditional - albeit really glammed up - lodge options, or
up on the deck with true gourmet options. It’s all great platters of tapas
or grilled calamari or tempura prawns or lamb loin, it’s mango salsa, and
ashed brinjal, and smoked raisin puree. Sounds pretentious... it’s not.
Obviously, game drives are the highlight of any trip to the bush...
and with exceptional trackers and guides and an animal-attracting
combination of terrain, rivers and vegetation, sightings are frequent,
close up and exciting. Although nothing’s guaranteed, this area is known
for it’s leopard... spotting a massive male leopard on the hunt (we did), a
female with her kill up a tree (we did) and a mum with her babe basking
and playing in the sun (we did) made for an unforgettable trip.
Okay... let’s chat about the once-in-a-lifetime offer. A stay at Saseka
usually costs R15805 a person a night, but the post lock-down special
(for South African residents only), is R4999 a person a night, with a
minimum two night stay. This includes accommodation, all meals
(breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner), hot beverages, early morning and
late afternoon game drives, and local sundowner drinks. Extras include
optional guided walks, and laundry, and the lodge does (unfortunately)
have Wifi. These rates exclude peak season (December 16, 2020 to
January 5, 2021). Details: www.thornybush.com
Extraordinary attention
to detail throughout
First impressions count. And a collection of blue and white Delft-inspired
vases and pots on an entrance table make a stylish, classic statement. The idea
is to have a collection of different sizes and shapes (matchy-matchy doesn’t
work here), displayed together. We’ve searched, and found the best selection
of different vases at Biggie Best (we should have known!). Tall and shapely
urns, round little ginger jars, flat plates for your keys and loads that would be
perfect for pot plants... simply stunning. More good news... Biggie Best
is now stocked in selected Volpes stores... so double shopping
fun. Details: volpes.co.za/biggie-best. We’ve got a set of these
to give away to one lucky (and stylish) Get It reader... simply visit
