Back to Church Month
October is normally the month when
the early momentum of a new season
in Church life begins to gather pace.
Students have begun to appear after
their summer hibernation, among
them Freshers and Internationals. It’s
often a time when people move into the
conurbation with a new job. Relocating
to a new area, they are also relocating
to a new Church.
This is the stage when, typically,
evangelism and teaching courses
recommence- Alpha, Christianity
Explored and the like.
All our familiar and regular mid- week
patterns and routines as a Church
family are re -established. Life feels
reassuringly normal, if busy. Back to
school, back to Church, back to what
we have known for years!
But after six months of Covid and a
bewildering number of Government
Guidelines and U turns to to navigate,
there is nothing remotely normal
about life this Autumn or therefore our
Programme!
Face masks are still mandatory in some
places, social distancing is an ongoing
requirement, hand sanitizing stations
are ubiquitous, households and bubbles
are frequently debated topics; worklife,
for many, is still lived remotely
and in front of a screen.
Some of the Staff have designated
October at Lansdowne as the
“experimental” month! That’s
particularly a reference to our pilot
plans for in person worship at
Woodbury Avenue on Sundays.
The time has come for us to gather
safely, as one, in larger groups to pray,
hear the word of God and sing the
praise of God.
So as we continue to respect each
other’s personal judgement on
how we each return to some sort of
normal gatherings in the Church
building, there are three things worth
underlining.
Corporate worship is not optional. We
need it as believers like we need oxygen
to breathe. And so do our children and
young people. The virtual world which
we have inhabited since March needs to
be married to the “real” world.
The Mission of the Church is the same.
At one level, nothing has changed
for us. The mandate to go and make
disciples hasn’t been rescinded. The
Lord is on the throne of the universe
and building the Church across the
world. People are coming to Christ
online and being discipled, as well as
through socially distanced connections.
There is much land to be possessed.
This was God’s charge to the tribes of
Israel as they moved into the Promised
land to conquer it. The various tribes
of Lansdowne are moving back into
formation ready for battle- Small
groups, Life, Students, Internationals,
Children, Youth. We are excited by the
opportunities on the Townsend estate,
we anticipate what might be possible
out of the new Centre on Lansdowne
Road as a hub for Christian mission.
We have all to play for. And what is
more victory is already ours in Christ.
So, Lansdowne, let’s step up to
the gospel of prayer, praise and
proclamation!
Peter Baker | Senior Minister
Normally at this time of year we would
have had a Harvest service where we
collect a wide range of goods for the
In Touch ministry which provides
meals and support to the Homeless and
Disadvantaged in Bournemouth.
However, due to the COVID-19
pandemic and the resulting restrictions
on gathered events, this has not been
possible. Nevertheless, the In Touch
Ministry is still operating under
these restrictions as the need to care
for the most vulnerable in society
is increasing. It has therefore been
decided to have a Harvest Appeal
where people can bring food items to
the church during October to support
this vital work. The list of what is
requiredcan be found below.
The church will be open on a Tuesday,
Thursday and Sunday from 10am to
12pm. If, however, you are unable to
get to the church then please contact
the Church Office and arrangements
can be made to collect the goods from
your home.
We hope that you will be able to
support this important work as it
is likely that the need will grow as
restrictions continue and the economic
impact on the country becomes more
apparent.

In Lansdowne
for good
At the recent Members’ Meeting an
overview of the progress of the new
building was provided. A number of
pictures were presented and a selection
has been provided on this page.
The scaffolding has been erected and
works are progressing well on the roofs,
brick parapets and windows. Internally
the Baptistry and lift shaft have been
constructed together with the plywood
decking for the balcony seating. The
mechanical and electrical installations
are well advanced with boilers, water
tank and pumps fitted in the plantroom.
Progress is in line with the construction
programme with completion expected
on 4th June 2021. Expenditure is also on
budget and the cashflow.
Orders are now being finalised for the
fit out works in particular the cabling
for the audio visual systems, kitchen
equipment and balcony seats and these
works will commence on site before the
end of this year. The £350,000 cost of
the fit out works needs to be secured and
further information and the opportunity
to donate is available on the church’s
website, under the heading ‘Let’s Finish
the Job’.

Update
We have continued connecting with
children and families in creative and
innovative ways online.
In September we launched our new
‘Big Bible Curriculum’ for the year
ahead. Our first topic was ‘Creation.’
The under 5s focussed on ‘The Big
Start’ theme and our Ground Breakers
theme was ‘Creation Station.’ We
began with a video overview and for
the end of topic finale we had a ‘Big
Start Story & Song time’ for Under 5s
and a ‘Creation Station’ Craft time
for Ground Breakers. Our under 5s
enjoyed an interactive session where
the story was brought to life through
actions, lights and toy animals. The
‘Creation Station’ session involved
creative storytelling and creating their
own ‘Story of Creation’ booklet. The
children had fun engaging in this!
We continue running Hi5 online and
providing activity resources. Last
month we had a ‘Hi5 Games night.’ We
played games such as, ‘The Generation
Game.’ ‘Pictionary’ and ‘Read my lips.’
The session concluded with a bible
focused epilogue and prayer. We also
continue provide resources for our
toddler group children.
For families we continue to run our
Mum’s Bible Study group and Parent
Prayer Line online. This has been a
great way to keep families connected.
This October we are excited to be
launching a new group called ‘Digging
Deeper’ for school years 4-6. We will
provide opportunities for children
to ‘dig deeper’ into God’s Word. We
are also making plans for physical
gatherings and our Families team are
busy producing exciting Light Party
resources!

Gathered Service 4 October 2020
“Let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good
deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but
encouraging one another – all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Hebrews 10:24-25.
On the 4 October Lansdowne Church held the first gathered service since March
2020. Over 70 people attended under COVID-19 restrictions, meeting in both the
chapel and the hall
We were also joined by a greater number online. It was a different experience,
given the current restrictions, but it was a major step forward from which we can
learn from as we plan further events. On the 11 and 18 of October, there will be the
opportunity to meet at Woodbury avenue to watch the online service and there
will be the 2 nd gathered service on 25 October.
For all these events you will need to book on-line prior to the event. If the event is
full then please advise the Church Office and you will be given priority for the next
event. In addition, we will be endeavouring to ensure that those who are not on
the internet will have the opportunity to attend and if you are aware of anyone in
this situation please encourage them to contact the church office.
We look forward to seeing as many of you who feel able to attend and we will of
course ensure that the online offering is maintained for those who, at present,
prefer to participate in this manner.
