2 Autumn 2020 Newsletter
Editor’s column
Welcome to the latest edition of EDGE Services’
newsletter. As you know, EDGE works with
hundreds of clients and thousands of delegates in
the health and social care sectors. The whole team
stands in awe at the work accomplished, and the
sacrifices made, by you in these difficult times.
We have opted, in this slightly condensed edition,
not to focus too heavily on the impact of Covid-19,
instead bringing you news of the imminent arrival
of a new addition to our E-Learning package on
page 3. We do, however, also offer some guidance
on the use of PPE recognising the vital role it now
plays in controlling the spread of the pandemic.
Either way, I trust you will find something of value
to aid you in the incredible work you do.
Until next time, I wish you good health.

New Video of Practical Skills
making Distance Learning a
Possibility
EDGE Services trainers spent some time in August
filming an extensive range of people handling skills
as a resource to be made available to our Key Trainer
qualified delegates.
The new video is as a direct response to requests from
our customers received during the recent pandemic to
produce a video resource available to enable distance
learning.
The new video is split into five separate modules (four
out of the five modules have now been filmed with the 5th
expected to be filmed in early 2021.) The modules enable
the Key Trainers that we have trained, and who hold
a current certificate from us to deliver practical people
handling skills to their front-line colleagues remotely via
a video conferencing system such as Zoom or Google
Hangouts.
The modules increase in complexity as staff move up
the modules and cover over 50 individual practical
techniques in total. Techniques demonstrated and
explained that don’t involve equipment include:
• Getting the client ready to stand,
• Sit-to-stand techniques,
• Chair-to-chair transfer techniques,
• Managing the slouched client,
• Managing the falling client,
• Assisted walking etc.,
Plus, a very wide range of equipment (both small
handling aids and larger pieces of kit) are demonstrated
and explained including:
• Managing the fallen client with equipment,
• The use of handling slings and handling belts,
• The use of turntables/rotating boards,
• The use of transfer boards,
• The use of rotating turners and perched transferring
aids,
• The use of slide sheets and in-bed turning systems
• The use of oval gliding boards,
• The use of a very wide range of hoists and slings
including a gantry hoist system etc.,
The videos are expected to be available from December
2020 to all successful Key Trainers who have attended
our training, and we feel sure that they will prove yet
another invaluable resource from the team at EDGE
Services.

EDGE and the
Environment
One of our company New Year resolutions was to take
steps to further reduce our carbon footprint and we
are delighted to announce that we have partnered with
Make it Wild – a Yorkshire-based company whose aim
is to encourage a greater knowledge, understanding
and enjoyment of the natural world - and their Carbon
Mitigation through Tree Planting scheme.
EDGE have already taken steps to – we and continue to
look for new ways in which we can – reduce our carbon
footprint and we are thrilled to have found a way in which
we can offset some of what remains.
The scheme involves Make it Wild planting trees on their
nature reserves in Summerbridge, North Yorkshire and
ensuring that enough of them reach maturity in order to
offset your carbon footprint. You can choose how much
carbon to offset – for your business or as an individual –
and there is a handy calculator on their website for you to
work out how much to do.
As they grow, the trees will absorb and then trap
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Calculations have
shown that one tree can typically trap 3.7 tonnes of
carbon dioxide during its lifetime which is significant in
contributing to the lowering of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.
Like Make it Wild, EDGE Services believe that one of
the best possible ways to compensate for some of our
unavoidable carbon footprint is through the planting of
trees and we’d love to see more people and companies
– including our clients and delegates - getting involved in
this and similar schemes.
To find out more about Make it Wild and their carbon
offsetting visit their website www.makeitwild.co.uk.

Coronavirus:
Care Homes to get free
PPE until March 2021
The Department of Health is due to publish a plan, on 18
September 2020, to make PPE free for care homes until
March 2021. The plan, which forms part of a government
coronavirus plan for the winter, will also see a new chief
nurse, whose role it will be to provide a ‘stronger voice’
for nurses working within the care sector, appointed.
The government has already promised care homes
£546m to try to reduce transmission of the virus. This
money is intended to help pay care workers full wages
when they are self-isolating and to help reduce the
spread of the virus by ensuring that carers only work in
one care home.
The BBC’s social affairs correspondent, Alison Holt, said
that the plan is important, that it recognises increasing
supplies costs for the sector and that the role of ‘chief
nurse’ is a significant one.
Concerns from within the industry have been raised
however about the plan failing to address the need to pay
care staff better and how the government plans to meet
the expected increase in demand for care services over
the winter.
The head of charity Age UK, Caroline Abrahams, said
what she had seen of the plan was “promising” but
“the devil will be in the detail, which we have not yet
seen, on the face of it this plan seems to get some
important things right,” she said.
“The extra funding is welcome, though a little more
would give us, and no doubt providers, more confidence
that they will get through the next few months without a
financial crisis.”
Trainer Recruitment
EDGE Services have a small but VERY talented team of trainers but we need more!
We are looking to recruit either a full-time or part-time
post/s to join our team.
Are you a registered nurse, registered physiotherapist
or occupational therapist with an interest in staff training
and development? Ideally someone with a background in
manual handling, though in-house training will be given. It
is imperative that you will be willing to travel and be away
from home regularly and as compensation we offer a very
generous annual leave package. You need to have a full
UK driving licence and access to a car.
Salaries start at £30,500 p.a. and the successful
candidate will be part of the friendly and supportive team
of trainers welcomed into the EDGE family.
If this new post is of interest to you and you would like
to rise to this challenge then please email your CV to
klovett@edgeservices.co.uk. We would be delighted to
tell you more about the post and give you the opportunity
to ask any questions you may have.

Need to know
The Safe Use of PPE
Introduction
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
is now part of everyday healthcare
and the purpose is to minimise the
risks of cross-contamination between
clients/patients and between clients/
patients and staff.
However, effective hand hygiene
remains the cornerstone of infection
prevention and all healthcare and
social care workers must be aware
that wearing PPE does not replace
the need to carry out safe, hand
hygiene practices.
The guidelines below do not include
enhanced PPE.
Putting on PPE
When putting on PPE the following
sequence should be followed;
• Identify and select the appropriate
PPE that you are to be wearing,
ensure that you have the correct size
of gown, facemask/shield and gloves
etc.
• Decontaminate your hands as
per your organisation’s guidance
utilising appropriate soap and/or
hand sanitisers. Ensure hands are
washed for the advised time frame
(the NHS advise for at least 20
seconds or singing happy birthday
twice https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/
healthy-body/best-way-to-wash-yourhands/).
Ensure hands are fully dried
afterwards.
• If you are wearing a gown put this
on first, pick the gown up by making
contact with the inside material if
possible limiting cross infection to
the outward area that may touch
the patient/client. You may require
assistance to tie the ties at the back.
• Put on the plastic (disposable)
apron. Usually aprons are supplied in
a roll and are folded. Open the apron
outwards towards the patient/client
so any environmental contamination
on the outer surface does not come
into contact with the patient/client.
• Put on your facemask. The
facemask should fully cover your
nose and your mouth with the ties
secured firmly on the crown of your
head (top tie) and the base of your
neck (bottom tie). If the mask has
ear loops, hook them appropriately
around your ears. Secure the nose
strap across the bridge of the nose
sealing any flexible strap firmly.
• Put on your face shield or protective
goggles. Your face shield should
provide full face coverage from the
top of the forehead to a little below
the chin and wrap around to cover
the ears. Protective goggles provide
protection to the eyes only and
should cover the whole of the eye
sockets from the eyebrow area to the
cheekbone area, plus wrap around to
the side of the eye socket.
• Finally put on your gloves ensuring
they cover the wrist area and if
wearing a gown, they should be
placed over the cuff of the gown
sleeve. Remember, touching door
handles or equipment after putting on
gloves may contaminate them before
you reach the patient/client.
Removing PPE
PPE should be removed in the
following sequence to minimise the
risk of cross/self-contamination;
At each stage dispose of the item in
the appropriate receptacle.
• Remove gloves to ensure the
removal does not cause additional
contamination of the hands peel back
the glove from the cuff area folding
over itself on removal (contamination
is then on the inside). Folding the
second glove into the first on removal
limits contamination further.
• Remove the apron by touching
the ties at the back and the inside
area only. Folding or rolling it down
into itself keeping the contaminated
(outside area) inside the roll/fold.
Do this in a gentle, slow manner to
further reduce contamination flying
off the apron surface.
• Remove gown by untying the back
ties and like the apron fold or roll it
down into itself with the contaminated
area inside the material roll/fold. Like
the apron do this slowly and in a
gentle manner.
• At this stage you should wash your
hands as per NHS guidance.
• Remove face shield/goggles and/
or mask by taking the straps and
moving up and away from the face
area.
• Once again hands should be
washed and decontaminated as per
NHS guidance after the full removal
of all PPE.
Conclusion
Your employer should have carried
out a risk assessment to determine
when you should use PPE and what
type of PPE is required for different
tasks or individuals. Staff should also
be educated and their competence
assessed regarding its safe use.
Many on-line training courses exist to
assist here. If you are unsure about
using PPE your line manager should
be able to advise.
