How is Halloween

celebrated at your

Well Halloween is not celebrated

in my country. That is why no one

knocks on the door. We do celebrate

it, but just with my family.

Every Halloween we spent like

this. This is why all Halloweens

are best.

Halloween is one of the best

celebrations of the year. In my

home every Halloween we bake

special cookies, decorate the house

and gather with family and watch

horror movies.

More and more communities here

are doing organised trick or treating

these days for kids, and I always

have treats for the little wizards

and witches ready by the door.

A few years ago, on my way out to a Halloween

party, I was in a full zombie costume and a

little kid in my building saw me and started

crying. I had to give him some candies to

convince him that zombies can be friendly as

well, and that absolutely made my evening.

Since I’m from China I didn’t

exactly grow up celebrating

Halloween. But these years it’s a

must to put on scary costumes and

makeup and go out with friends

to have some blood themed fun.

My best Halloween was in Nanjing,

an organisation had a community

Halloween event. It had a maze, a

hunt for clues and drinks and food.

Great event for families.

Halloween is a block party in downtown

were I’m from, everyone gets dressed up.

Many people love doing group dress up,

that is always fun. Each community also

does its own celebration, like Halloween

trick or treat.

October is Halloween month.

Everyone is waiting for the

chance to dress up and

celebrate with friends and

family. I bet we have all dressed up for

Halloween at least once, but do we really

know the history of this festivity? Do we

really know what we are celebrating?

Usually people, including myself, seize

the opportunity of Halloween

to dress up - the darker the

better - and celebrate a

second carnival. But it was

not always like this.

The story begun in Erin - the

current Ireland - hundreds of

years ago when the Celts were

living there. This festivity coincides

with the Celtic New Year’s Eve Samhain

(pronunounced “sow-in” where sow

rhymes with cow), which means “summerend”

in the ancient Celtic language.

The Celtic were a population of

shepherds, therefore their life was marked

by the cycles of breeding. For them the

end of summer represented the start of

the cold season and therefore a new year.

It was a beautiful period, when they could

rest and thank the gods for the past year.

Samhain was happy moment for the

Celtic population and this may sounds

strange since death is the main topic of

the festival, but there is a reason also for

this. They were celebrating death because

it was reflecting what was happening in

nature during those days. For doing so

they had long celebrations: they gathered

in the woods and in the hills where they

lit the sacred fire and made animal

sacrifices, then they returned

to the village taking the

sacred fire with them

inside lanterns made from

vegetables - from this the

iconic Jack-o’-lantern.

Halloween arrived in the

United States by emigrants,

who, driven by the terrible famine

of the 19th century, went in large

numbers to the new land. The word

Halloween comes from “All Hallow’s Eve”,

where Hallow means Saint in ancient

English, and therefore Halloween means

All Saint’s Eve. This is one of the biggest

holidays in America, but the holiday, or

versions of it, has a history all over the

world. From Ireland to Japan, countries

across the globe have their own festivals

celebrating the afterlife, and the practices

vary wildly from nation to nation.

If you ever watched Coco, the

famous Pixar movie, you already

know what I’m talking about. To

find the origins of the modern

Mexican holiday we must go back

in time to indigenous observances

and to an Aztec festival dedicated

to the goddess Mictecacihuatl.

Dia de los Muertos, or "Day of

the Dead”, fell in the ninth month

of the Aztec calendar, about

the beginning of August, but

after the Spanish colonisation

the celebration was gradually

associated with October 31. During

Dia de los Muertos locals dress

up as their ancestors and build

private altars called “ofrendas",

which they used to present gifts

- from sugar skulls to tequila -

to the dead. In Mexican culture,

death is viewed as a natural part

of the human cycle, that’s why

this is not a day of sadness but a

day of celebration. It differs from

Halloween substantially, however

as Halloween does not focus on

relatives and the afterlife alone. 7

All Souls Day is a religious affair in

Italy, called Festa dei morti, where

people remember their late loved

ones, but people on the island of

Sardinia called it Is Animeddas,

Su mortu mortu, Su Prugadoriu

or Is Panixeddas depending on

the area. This festival is an ancient

tradition that has many similarities

with the ancient rituals of

Shamain. The children go around

the houses of the villages to ask

for a small offer and adults, on the

other hand, remember their dead

with a dinner, then gather around

the fireplace to tell facts of the past

or legends of the area. They then

leave the table set for the dead all

night and in some countries even

the beliefs remain open for them

to feed. Pumpkin is also not a

Halloween prerogative. In Sardinia

they were carved to represent

ghostly beings, to entertain and

scare children.

Originated from the Chinese Ghost Festival,

the Japanese Buddhist Obon ( お 盆 ) is

a festivity to honour the spirits of one's

ancestors. It has been celebrated in Japan

for more than 500 years and today this

Buddhist–Confucian custom has evolved

into a family reunion holiday. During

three days of celebration people return to

ancestral family places and visit and clean

their ancestors' graves when the spirits

of ancestors are supposed to revisit the

household altars. Traditionally the festival

includes a dance, known as Bon Odori (Bon

dance) which differs from region to region.

Halloween lasts one day in western countries

but in Asia ghost and spirits are the leading

actor of a whole month: the seventh month or

the so called Ghost Month. The Hungry Ghost

Festival -Zhongyuan Jie ( 中 元 節 ), Gui Jie ( 鬼

節 ) or Yulan Festival ( 盂 兰 盆 节 ) in Chinese -

can be defined as the Chinese Halloween and

is celebrated starting on the 15th night of the

seventh month for a whole month. During this

month people honour the spirits including

deceased ancestors, which come out from

the lower realm. Festivities include parades,

operas, burning incense, food for the dead and

operatic performances to entertain the spirits.

Gai Jatra is a festival of dancing, singing,

mirth and laughter. The festival (also called

the festival of cow), is celebrated in the

Kathmandu Valley to commemorate the

death of loved ones. As part of the festival

family members of the deceased of the

past year send people mostly children,

dressed as cows to parade on the streets.

Fête Gede or "Festival

of the Ancestors," is the

Haiti's 'Day Of The Dead'

Celebration. It is one of the

most important voodoo

festivals celebrated in Haiti

and many other Voodoo

communities around the

world. In Haiti the event,

which is commemorated

yearly on the first and

second days of November,

is marked by converging

on cemeteries to honour

Haitian ancestors with

rituals and sacrifices.

People take part by lighting

candles, journeying to their

ancestors' burial places

and drinking rum infused

with chilies. Singing,

dancing, and drinking are

accompanied by animal

sacrifices, various other

offerings, and “actual”

possessions by the spirits.

Zhejiang region is characterised

by mountainous landscape

surrounded by green and lush

nature reminiscent of those of

the famous Chinese landscape

paintings. Having read about

some fascinating scenic

destinations to visit in this

region, I got advice from some

Chinese friends to visit some

beautiful rural places, and the

choice fell on Tonglu.

Tonglu County is under the

administration of Hangzhou and

is only 80 km away. Even if the

city itself doesn’t offer that many

attractions as other places around the

Zhejiang region, my stay was a pleasant

surprise and an exciting experience of

what is “authentic China”: a nice way to

escape from a crowded Hangzhou during

the National Holidays, or if you have a few

days to travel.

My adventure to Tonglu began on

October 1, 2018, with a group of friends.

We got on a bus that shuttles between

Tonglu and Hangzhou every day. It is

possible to take the bus to Tonglu from

Hangzhou South Railway Station. After an

hour and a half, we arrived very hungrily

in Tonglu, greeted by street food vendors

who surround the area near the bus

station, aware of finding tired travellers

with grumbling bellies.

We had booked a hotel in the suburbs of

Tonglu, one of the few in the area that

accepts foreigners: it is essential to know

that not every hotel in China, especially

in small cities, are allowed to have foreign

guests, and do not forget to carry your

The small suburb where we found the

hotel was away from the city centre,

perhaps also for this reason that the

arrival of my western friends and I was

greeted with curiosity and amazement

by the locals, not used to having many

foreign visitors in that area. Within a few

hours, the whole neighbourhood was

aware of our arrival!

To register at the hotel, it took almost two

hours. The lady at the reception had a

lot of trouble typing western names and

passports data on the computer since

she was not used to seeing many non-

Chinese documents.

The first day ended with a typical Chinese

dinner in a nearby restaurant that warmly

welcomed us arranging table and stalls

along the street, because the inside of the

restaurant was too small to seat our large

group. As far as I remember that was one

of the best dinners I ever had in China.

生 活 方 式

The day ended slowly on the banks of the

Fuchun River, that runs through the city of

Tonglu, admiring a beautiful sunset with a

We spent our second night in Tonglu

singing and dancing Chinese songs at KTV,

the only nightlife option available in Tonglu.

We made friends with the KTV 老 板 (owner)

who invited us for a hike in nature.

The next morning the atmosphere around

our hotel was different: a lively fruit and

vegetable market filled the streets with its

sounds and smells. All over there were men

riding rickshaws full of tangerines and old

ladies sitting on the sidewalks offering fresh

cabbage. Life in that place was going on in

its calm chaos, and I had the intense feeling

of being out of place in that environment

still in its everyday routine.

We had a typical Chinese breakfast sitting

on one of the many stalls along the street in

front of the hotel: warm steamed buns and

juicy fried dumplings gave me the energy

to face the hike we planned for that day.

One of the most touristy destinations in

the city of Tonglu is the Daqishan National

Forest Park ( 大 奇 山 国 家 森 林 公 园 ): a

pleasant path at the foot of Daqi Mountain

bordered by crystal-clear streams and

green shrubs in an almost fairy-tale-like

atmosphere. Located at the south bank

of Fuchun River, Daqi Mountain National

Forest Park is a comprehensive forest park

integrated Jiangnan graceful hills and water

with grassland scenery.

the park was not too crowded, and the walk

in the mountains was pleasant. I enjoyed

the quiet of the place and the relaxing

sound of gurgling streams: the few people

we encountered during our path were

surprised to see foreigners hiking there

and we exchanged smiles and had a few

interesting talks.

The nature at the foot of Daqi Mountain

is luxuriant, the air clean and the water so

clear that one would want to bathe in it if

it were not forbidden. It is possible to do

the hike in just half a day, leaving in the

morning that day we had a chilled picnic

along the trail.

The rest of the day was dedicated to a

walk in the city of Tonglu, that was quiet,

green and completely deserted. I had the

impression of being in a ghost town: it

seemed that everyone had fled elsewhere

on the occasion of the national holiday.

On our last day in Tonglu, after a few hours'

sleep, we followed our improvised Chinese

guide to one of the hills near our hotel:

what was supposed to be a quiet walk

turned into a real climb on not exactly

frequented trails.

The view at the end of our endless climb

into the wilderness of Zhejiang Nature

was spectacular. Among the trees, it was

possible to glimpse Fuchun River crossing

green mountains in a landscape that

seemed to be painted in watercolours.

From the top of the hill, we saw one of the

tourist attractions that unfortunately we

didn’t visit during our stay: a boat trip along

the Fuchun river that ends in a visit at the

Yaolin Caves, a stunning series of limestone

caves that formed around 350,000 years

ago. A reason to visit Tonglu in the future.

The trip to Tonglu is one of my sweetest

China memories because it allowed me

to experience life far away from touristic

spots and crowds. China will never stop to

surprise me: even in the most anonymous

places, you can have exciting adventures.

Reaching the park is very simple because it

is well connected by bus and easy to reach

by taxi too. Even though we visited the

Daqishan National Forest in high season, 11

It is again this time of the year, and many are

already struggling with the same question: what

costume should I wear this year for Halloween?

You already have many

Halloween parties

planned and coming up

with an original idea is

not easy, especially if you are

planning what to wear on a low

budget and last minute, as usual.

If you think that dressing up

as Freda Kahlo or the Joker

is already too much of a

cliché, this year you should

try one of these ideas.

This heavenly combination of angel

and avocado makes a beloved (not

to mention, punny) phrase come

to life. On Taobao, there's plenty of

green t-shirts featuring an avocado

print, and it is not difficult to find a

pair of wings and a halo.

Budget: around 60 RMB

Pun costumes are an essential

part of any Halloween party. If

you love plays on words and

being the funny one in the

group and/or you’re too lazy to

go OTT with your Halloween

costume, then you should take

a cue from the ideas below.

These super-easy but hilarious

costumes will guarantee

laughs—or maybe earn you

some eye rolls. Pun costumes are

original and creative by nature

and can be pulled together

with simple materials, crafts

and clothing you have at home.

So if you’re in a last-minute

costume jam, a pun costume

is the perfect way to go!

The unofficial French uniform (striped

Gene Simmons' and Paul Stanley's

iconic makeup created an oddball

match made in heaven. If you're not

sure the joke will be obvious enough,

add a flag and baguette for an extra

hint: et voilà le French Kiss! On Taobao,

you can buy one of the many cosplay

makeup pads and a cute French hat.

Budget: 70 RMB

Give your Halloween party guests the

fright of their lives and cloak yourself in

the real evil of "Dead Battery" and "No

Wifi." Although, you're gonna have to

resist checking your phone all evening,

so it's not for everybody. Surprisingly

Taobao has shirts designed with low

battery and low wifi logo, and you can

make your costume scarier combining

it with a creepy classical makeup.

Budget: 40 RMB

This easy, affordable DIY option will

undoubtedly get laughs from all the fans

of the movie in the room. Just print all the

different palette of grey you can find on the

internet and stick them on a black t-shirt.

Budget:0 RMB

If you find your classical explorer

costume too trivial for this year

Halloween, add to it the famous logo

of the Microsoft web browser: you are

Internet Explorer!

You need a cowboy hat and a brown

leather jacket to recreate something

that reminds people of Indiana Jones,

and a printer for the logo that you will

stick on your shirt.

Budget: 30 RMB

When life gives you lemon...make lemonade! For

this effortless and funny pun costume, all you

need is a yellow top or dress, a name tag with

the word "Life," and a basket of lemons.

“The Four Arts of the Chinese

Scholar” or Si Yì ( 四 溢 ) was the

title given to the academic and

artistic skills that the Chinese

aristocrat scholars must have.

Hand-picked by the Emperor

of China, the Chinese literati

or scholar-officials must have

mastered not one but all

four arts. These four arts also

referred to as Qín Qí Shū Huà ( 琴

棋 书 画 ) are as follows: Qín ( 琴 )

refers to the stringed Chinese

musical instrument known for

its grace and serenity. Qí ( 棋 )

is the strategic board game

now known in the West as Go.

Shū ( 书 ) represents Chinese

calligraphy with all of its

brushes and strokes while Huà

( 画 ) denotes Chinese painting

– the ultimate outlet for one’s

文 化

In last month’s issue, I wrote about the

seven-stringed plucked instrument: Qín

( 琴 ) or Gǔ Qín ( 古 琴 ). In this month’s

issue, I will be focusing on the second of

the four arts – Qí ( 棋 ):

Qí ( 棋 ) or Wéi Qí ( 围 棋 ) translates to the

“encirclement board game” but is more

commonly known in the West by its English

name “Go”. It is a complex adversarial board

game with two players playing against each

other head-to-head to capture pieces and

seize territory. Invented sometime between

2,500 – 4,000 years ago, Go is believed to

be the oldest board game that is still played

in its original form. The International Go

Federation estimates that there are 20

million current Go players with over 46

million people who know how to play the

game worldwide.

At first glance, Go seems to be a simple

children’s game. Unlike chess where each

player is equipped with specific pieces

which move in specific ways, Go has just one

type of piece called a “stone”. Players take

turns placing “stones” on the intersections

of a 19 by 19 square grid called “points”.

These intersections or “points” represent

territory that can be owned by either player

with the placement of their stone.

The objective of the game

is also simple: capture

more territory than your

opponent. To capture

opponent’s stones,

you must surround the

opponent’s piece or pieces

on all orthogonally-adjacent

sides. Simply put, a stone

must be surrounded on the

top, bottom, left and right

of it by enemy stones to be

captured. In the end, the

player with the greatest

area covered (live stones

on board plus the area

captured by live stones)

wins the game.

Though the rules and

objective of Go are simple, the strategy and

gameplay of Go is ridiculously complex and

likely not for small children or dumb adults

(me). This is due to the endless possibilities

of moves and the various strategies that

both players can employ to win the game.

Interestingly, there are 2.089 x 10170

possible combinations of moves in Go

which greatly outnumber the estimated

number of atoms in the observable universe

at 1080. This is why professional games in

Go can sometimes take up to 6 hours long!

Go has recently become a hot topic in

the tech world. Due to the vast number

of possibilities in its game play, those

who study artificial intelligence had been

challenged to figure out a program that can

play Go at the highest level. Computers like

IBM’s 1997 Deep Blue had already achieved

victory against world champion chess

players but no computers were able to

beat Go players until recently.

One of these programs

is Google’s self-learning

AlphaGo. In March

of 2016, the AlphaGo

program beat Lee

Sedol, one of the highest

ranked Go players in the

world in a heavily televised

5-game match between man

and machine. The year after,

AlphaGo beat Ke Jie, a professional

Go player who was ranked number

one in the world. Unfortunately, or

fortunately, depending on which side you’re

on, machines won.

Go is a game that has transcended time

and technology. Some thousand years

ago, Chinese aristocrats would have never

imagined that in the 21st century, people

would still be playing the same game based

off some lines and rocks. Even more so,

that same game remains embedded as a

rich piece of Chinese heritage and history.

If you’d like to learn more about Go, the

strategies of Go, or the complexities of the

game, feel free to enroll yourself in a 围

棋 school on 大 众 点 评 . Classes are around

150-200 RMB per hour and will help you

to develop some strategies of the game.

Perhaps one day, you’ll represent the

human race and face off against robots in a

life and death match of Go! 15

After meeting Anita Araujo and

learning about her passion for

boxing, you might do a doubletake

- probably because you are

seeking signs of a boxer’s physique, a

bias we are taught to look for. Standing at

158 centimetres and weighing 51 kg, the

Peruvian native who was raised in Argentina

punches with power and is used to people

feeling astonished after learning she is a

“Why are you doing this kind of sport?” “It’s

just for boys.” “You will have a body like a

boy.” “They will destroy your face and the

punches will affect you.” These negative

comments were often expressed to Anita

once people found out she was a boxer

growing up. However, this MBA shero didn’t

listen to these comments and fortunately

for the Hangzhou community, she is here

sharing her love for the sport in an inclusive

and encouraging environment.

Introducing a male-dominated sport to

the Hangzhou community isn’t the first

time Anita punched boundaries in the

boxing ring. At the age of 12, she began

participating in boxing workouts alongside

a group of older boys and young men -

initially to lose weight in an activity she

thought she would enjoy. She was the

only female training at this gym during

a time when there weren’t many female

role models to look up to within the sport.

At that moment, there was only one

Argentinian female world boxing champion.

“I always felt some kind of attraction to this

kind of sport since my father watched the

fight events every Saturday,” said Anita.

It was sort of a tradition for us - every

Saturday we would watch the fights and go

to boxing events.”

Anita’s father supported her desire and

decision to take up boxing and played

an active role in ensuring his daughter’s

success in it. After three months of

training, Anita’s coach felt she was ready

to participate in her first fight where she

fought another female at the same skill

level but a decade older than her. Anita won

her first fight, and she feels her first match

was a success due to training with males

that had an excellent grasp of the sport.

Anita’s dedication and hard work earned

her an invitation to the Argentina Boxing

Federation where she trained with other

high-level boxing athletes - some who

人 物

eventually became national champions.

At the age of 18, she left the sport to pursue

a university degree and then moved to

China to start her career in the hospitality

industry. After feeling she hit the glass

ceiling at work, she decided to pursue a

master’s degree in International Business

at Gongsha University in Xiasha - initially

to attain a higher-level management

position at a company in the future. Since

she couldn’t find a quality gym when she

first arrived in China, she didn’t work out for

three years. Then, COVID hit.

“The situation made me think about so

many things and analyse my life one more

time. I realised that I have to stick to things

that make me feel happy, things that I like,

and enjoy - like boxing,” said Anita. She

put into practice the lessons she learned

from her master’s education and created a

marketing plan to attract students to her

first boxing bootcamp held in April 2020.

“Fitness, social, family, and inclusion” - these

are the words that best describe Hangzhou’s

boxing community according to Anita.

The class is suitable for all ages and all skill

levels; her youngest student is 10 years old

and her oldest student is 65 years old. Anita

feels a sense of fulfilment when spreading

her passion for boxing to the Hangzhou

community and enjoys watching her

students’ progress unfold. When asked what

advice she would share with beginners

interested in trying the sport, Anita said,

“Not to give up and be committed. Usually,

boxing can be a little bit intense at first.

You will feel a bit more pain than a normal

workout which may scare you at first.

However, just try it for a couple more days,

which will give your body time to adjust to

the workout.”

Anita also hopes more women will take

up boxing and wants them to know that

this intense and aerobic workout doesn’t

make your physique more muscular. She

doesn’t feel this sport is just for men; she

thinks it is a great workout to tone arms

and muscles. Anita exclaimed, “I would

like to show women that we are strong

and we are smart. If we are committed to

something, we can achieve our goals.” Anita

feels it is important to share this message to

women, especially from where she is from.

She considers herself a person who fights

for her dreams and is a strong, confident,

and empowered woman. Despite boxing

globally is becoming more inclusive in this

time period, there are still a lot of taboos

when it comes to women participating in

the sport.

“It doesn’t matter who you are; everyone is

welcome. I want everyone to learn boxing

because it is a beautiful sport.”

It’s been coined as the “queen-bee syndrome,” by The Leadership

Quarterly, although there are more unconventional ways to refer

to it. Call it cattiness, pettiness, or just plain survival of the fittest,

our corporate culture has a long-standing reputation of pitting

women against one another in a professional environment.

Some may argue the traditional maledominated

office culture fuels it, and

they’d be right, but there is also a

personal dynamic on the inside that

promotes it.

Why are we, as women, still caught up in our

sick cycle of comparison, pettiness, bringing

one another down, or not being genuinely

happy for one another’s achievements? Why

is there a lack of recognition, support and

guidance amongst us as women?

The Leadership Quarterly by Belle Derks,

Naomi Ellemers, and Colette Van Laar,

reviews and defines the phenomenon

as, “Women leaders assimilate into maledominated

organisations (i.e., organisations

in which most executive positions are held

by men) by distancing themselves from

junior women and legitimising gender

inequality in their organisation.”

It’s the same age-old tale, and yet, it seems,

us women, can’t seem to shake it. Why?

Well the reality is as harsh as it is clear:

because we’re still behaving the same way.

Or is it the unfortunate, and misogynistic

culture that surrounds our workplace

The Leadership Quarterly concluded that

these “queen-bee” behaviours were based

on two central factors, one of which stems

from “discrimination and social identity

threat that women may experience in

male-dominated organisations,” and that

the behaviour is not a “typical feminine

response,” but rather a “group distancing

response that is also found in other

marginalised groups.

A friend of mine recently shared a story of a

recent experience she encountered while on

a casting call for a live-streaming job. While

waiting for her co-host, one candidate, who

had deemed herself as someone with more

“experience in the industry,” was asking a

barrage of questions about who her fellow

host will be. “Who is she, what country is

she from?” “Is she the same colour as her?”

she also asked, referring to, and pointing

towards my friend.

Why was this girl so hell-bent over knowing

if her colleague will be more attractive than

her? And what did skin colour have to do

with it?

Globally, this is a shared struggle across

the world, but in more recent years, it may

depend on which country you’re looking

at. Whereas in America, “women remain

underrepresented at every level, despite

earning more college degrees than men,”

it’s a different story in China. A recent report

from the World Economic Forum states,

“China has improved in gender equality and

has the second highest percentage of firms

with female participation in ownership

across Asia.”

In fact, the under-representation rate

in America and the West for women in

leadership positions is still greatly off

balance when compared to men. The

number is even more prevalent for woman

of colour. The McKinsey report “Women in

the Workplace,” details these disadvantages,

anywhere from women being promoted

less than men, lack of support from

management, and less woman to men

being hired at entry-level.

One of the ways China is one of the Asian

countries leading the way for equal

women’s rights in the workplace, is in their

maternity and paternity leave policy. The

maternity policy includes a much longer

leave than other countries (98 days paid)

and issued by both the government and

employer, and China was one of the first

countries to roll out statutory paid paternal

Despite these structures, room for

improvement still grows. More and more

companies are implementing strategies

from the inside. Networks and resources

for only-women entrepreneurs are steadily

rising, encouraging women to create more

safe-spaces and dialogue for fellow women.

Men are also encouraged to be aware of the

setbacks and disadvantages the workplace

may carry and stand as an ally to any and all

underrepresented minority groups. Even in

China, where women are often faced with

the expectation to get married, it is slowly

shifting, with women opting to marry later

and focus on career.

Anne Welsh McNulty offers some words on

how women can continue to build support

for one another at work, from her article on

the Harvard Business Review: “The antidote

to being penalised for sponsoring women

may just be to do it more — and to do it

vocally, loudly, and proudly — until we’re

able to change perceptions.” 21

By Sabrina Valles

Siyang ( 泗 阳 ) and Sihong ( 泗 洪 ) typically aren’t listed on foreigners’ China travel bucket lists. Even when I

shared the names of the cities with my Chinese friends, they too hadn’t thought much about travelling to either of

these cities. I was fortunate to be invited to attend a weekend excursion to both of these cities by Go Jiangsu, the

government’s tourism bureau for Jiangsu Province. Before the trip, I had no idea what to expect and I ended the

trip leaving with a greater appreciation for China’s diverse culture. These snapshots taken during the excursion

exhibit the knowledge I gained from my unexpected weekend getaway.

One doesn’t need to

understand the Chinese

language to appreciate the

beauty and the artistry of

Huaihai Theatre Company

of Siyang County’s

opera performance. I

personally was enamoured

by the traditional,

colourful costumes, their

melodic voices, and the

The boat ride at Hongze

Lake Wetland Park offered

me a getaway from the

hustle and bustle of city

life. The tranquil scenery

allowed me to escape

and meditate on my life’s

purpose while admiring

the plants and lotus flowers

along the waterway.

Did you know Siyang County is

China’s “Hometown of Poplars?”

The Chinese Poplar Museum

exhibits the importance of

this tree as well as a variety of

beautiful pieces made from

the tree’s wood. From the

museum’s figurine collection to

this abstract piece, I will never

overlook a poplar tree again.

These intricate

carvings are on an

unlikely canvas,

a peach pit. I met

several masters

of this art form at

Peach Fruit Park,

located at Luji Town

in Siyang County.

The level of detail

of these peach

pit carvings truly

showcases the

masters’ decades of

dedication to this

art form.

Have you ever wondered

how baijiu was made

in ancient times? The

Shuanggou Liquor Culture

and Tourism Area offers

reenactments for visitors

to get a sense of how this

popular drink was made.

These performers showed

tourists how baijiu’s

ingredients were transported

to the factory.

These vessels

lined up play an

important role in

baijiu’s creation.

Known as tan, they

are stored in cooler

temperatures so

baijiu can ferment

- turning the liquid

mixture into alcohol.

The lotus flower is one of the most

important flowers in Chinese culture -

representing long life and honour. The

flower also symbolises the ultimate

purity of heart, mind, perfection. When

the flowers are in full bloom from the

end of June to October, Hongze Lake

Wetland’s lotus flower garden will

enchant your reality and will serve as

the perfect backdrop for your photos. 23

告 生 活 方 式

By Maddalena Depalo

生 活 方 式

All around the globe young

people decide to spend months

or years working as an Au Pair

in a family in US or France.

Since a few years ago this is now also

possible in China. Being an au pair in

China is exactly the same as in US or

Europe, but this time the culture would

be very different and I believe this is is

a great opportunity for those wanting

to have a real Chinese experience

In the summer of 2018 I decided to

come to China. I wanted to continue

to learn the language, to do so in

another way. So I Googled ‘Au pair in

China’ and discovered a few interesting

websites. Once I found the most

suitable one, I contacted them and in

August set off for China to start my

first au pair experience. The Shenzhenbased

agency I chose specialised in au

pair programmes in China. I have been

an au pair with a family in Hangzhou

for almost 6 months and it has been a

beautiful yet challenging experience.

Just as in other countries, an au

pair is expected to spend around

30 hours per week with the child,

and the tasks are: taking care of the

child from when they wake up till

night time, sending them to school,

playing with them and teaching

them English (or other languages).

The au pair will be living with the

Chinese family, they will provide you a

separate bedroom and all your meals.

Housework doesn’t have to be done,

besides cleaning your own bedroom

and washing your own clothes.

Taking part in this programme won’t

be just like teaching English to a child.

In China au pairs have the chance

to learn Chinese, in fact the agency

usually arranges a few hours of

Chinese classes per week, if they don’t,

you can always join one of the many

Chinese courses in your city. Sometimes

the agency organises various social

activities, like cooking class or parties,

even trips to local sites, so as to create

a community of all the au pairs of the

city. But this wouldn’t be your only

chance to travel around. Most families

will treat their au pair like a member

of their family, so they will invite you

to travel with them and to take part in

their family meetings and gatherings.

In this way you will have the chance to

have a real Chinese experience, getting

to know all the traditions of the most

famous festivals around the country.

This experience will give you the

opportunity to enhance your

knowledge of Chinese culture and

language, together with sharing

something about your culture with the

family. This mix of culture, language

and knowledge exchange will leave

you overwhelmed by happiness and

good vibes. This is the opportunity

to have a home far from home and a

second family in this beautiful country.

The au pair will be living with the

Chinese family, they will provide you a

separate bedroom and all your meals.

Housework doesn’t have to be done,

besides cleaning your own bedroom

and washing your own clothes. 31

告 生 活 方 式

If you’re a young woman or man (usually

between 17 and 29 years old) who wants

to have a different Chinese experience,

but also have the possibility to work in

China, you’re perfect for this programme.

Being an English native speaker is not

always required, families often accept

non-native speakers with a good English

level, sometimes even German, Spanish or

French native speakers. If you meet this

requirement you’re ready for your application.

The first thing is to choose where you

would prefer to be located and for

how long. The families are based in big

cities all around China, from Beijing to

Shanghai, and the programme lasts

from 2 to 6 months or even 1 year.

After you send the application, the agency

will manage to find a match between your

availability and the requirements of the

family. As soon as they find a match, you’ll be

contacted and you’ll have the chance to meet

the family on Skype. If both the family and

the au pair are happy, there will be nothing

left to do than book your flight and start this

amazing experience. Don’t be afraid. The

process seems to be long but is actually quite

fast, in fact it usually takes 1 or 2 months

from the application to the arrival in China.

Example Au Pair Duties:

• Cleaning your own bedroom

• Washing your clothes (note

that most of the Chinese

family also have a nanny

who takes care of the house)

Child / Children

• Assisting with daily

life, such as: dressing,

washing, brushing,

lunch, bathing etc…

• Pick up from school

• Help with homework

• Play, such as: indoor and

outdoor activities, tell

stories, sing songs, etc…

• Put away toys and books

Foreign Language Learning

• Oral practice

• Teach learning skills of

foreign language

• Improve family members’

English level

Example Agency Services:

• Free lodging and

boarding in host family

• Support for Chinese

visa and visa renewal

• Airport/Train Pick up

• Full support during

your stay with 24/7

emergency call number

• Orientation

• Assigned coordinator

Au Pair Benefits:

• Pocket money: depending

on your working hours

and on the agency

• Flight reimbursement:

sometimes agency

repay the flights for

long period programs

• Insurance: hospital

insurance and accident

insurance is usually included

• Language classes: paid

Chinese classes throughout

your stay (not always)

weird make-up on but also

about having fun, carving

pumpkins into jack-o’-

lanterns, trying unique food,

and spending time with

family. Halloween is a great

chance to set an amazing

party table full of unique

and delicious food. These

recipes are all quite easy

and delicious. Making them

will bring fun to you and

your kids.

Jack-o’-Lantern Cheese

These are such a fun and

easy idea for Halloween.

All you need is tortillas and

cheese. From 10 pieces

of tortillas you can get 5

quesadillas. Using a knife,

cut 2 tortillas in the shape

of a pumpkin, then cut out

a jack-o'-lantern face into

the ‘top’ tortilla and then

set it aside. Sprinkle grated

cheese onto the ‘base’

tortilla (you can also add

some green onions if you

wish), and then place the

‘top’ tortilla (with the cutout

face), on top of the cheese

filling. Brush with some oil

and put in the oven. Bake

approximately 10 minutes.

Serve them with sour cream

and/or salsa.

Witch’s Broomstick

Another great recipe to

fill your Halloween dinner

table. You will need only

three ingredients: String

cheese sticks (8); Pretzel

sticks (24); and fresh

chives. So how will you

make it? Just cut each

cheese stick into three

pieces. Make cuts around

the cheese stick to about

halfway up. Place a

pretzel stick at the uncut

end of the cheese. Bind

with a piece of chive

and don’t forget to take

a picture of these cool

Witch’s Broomsticks.

A fun and healthy treat

for the kids. Just give

some bananas to your

children and make them

draw a face as shown in

the photo. Easy peasy!

Black Olive Snake

All you need for this recipe is

a very small piece of cheese,

a carrot and some black

olives. Just place the olives

on a plate in the shape of a

snake. Make a small tongue

from a piece of carrot, make

two eyes from the cheese

and small pieces of black

olives, and here you go!

Spooky Halloween

Popcorn Bags

Super cute popcorn bags

for Halloween. Draw a face

on a plastic bag with a black

permanent marker. Fill the

bag with popcorn and bind

it with ribbon. Done!

Spider Deviled Eggs

This really scary Halloween

appetizer is a fun recipe to

let your kids decorate. Cut

the boiled eggs in half and

remove the yolks. Put the

yolks in a dish and mash

them with a fork. Add a

little bit of salt, mustard,

and mayonnaise, mix

everything well. Put around

a tablespoon of the mixture

into the hollow of each half

of egg white. Place half of

an olive in the center of the

yolk. This will be the spider's

body. Use tiny slices of black

olives for making the legs

of your spider. This recipe is

very original and definitely

will make your kids excited.

Do not let the virus to

destroy your wonderful

Halloween!. Make a plan

of the activities, costumes,
