ENTRY
REQUIREMENTS
Students studying A Levels at Embley will normally
have attained a minimum of five GCSEs grade 9-5
(A*-B) and ideally 7 (A) in the A Level subjects they
wish to study, or an equivalent subject. In order
to study Further Mathematics, we expect a level 8
or above. For students that have studied Double
Science at GCSE and want to go on to study a
Science subject at A Level, we would expect them
to have achieved at least a double level 7. However,
all cases are looked at on an individual basis.
EXTENDED PROJECT
QUALIFICATION
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a
research-based qualification that is completed in
Year 12 and complements an A Level study portfolio.
Students research a subject of their choosing before
producing a dissertation, investigation, performance
or artefact.
Embley students achieve excellent results in the
EPQs - 100% of our students achieved A* - A last
year. The qualification is worth half an A Level
and it is well-respected by universities. It teaches
students essential research and writing skills that
are required to succeed in higher education and the
qualification is invaluable on a personal statement,
CV or at interview. Many of our students applying to
universities often receive reduced offers for A Level
requirements if an A and A* grade is achieved in the
EPQ.
discussions are a regular feature of the process and
we use the vast experience of our staff and network
with industry and higher education to support each
student in the process of creating their project.
Furthermore, we have close links with Southampton
University’s staff and facilities to support learning
and can arrange visits to the university to help with
development and research.
Students taking three A Levels are expected to
complement their academic portfolio with an EPQ.
A LEVEL SUBJECTS
Choosing A Levels is a finely wrought process and
our highly experienced senior teaching staff are
available to help you make these important decisions.
Our advice is to choose a manageable combination
of subjects that you enjoy and, if new subjects, will
play to your academic strengths and interests. In
our experience, this combination is likely to lead to
achieving the best grades.
Most universities usually offer undergraduate places
based on three A Level grades with very few requiring
a fourth subject at A Level. In light of this, and the
increased rigour of the linear A Levels, we would
anticipate that most students follow three A Level
subjects and an Extended Project Qualification.
A lot of our students choose to study an area that
will contribute to their university course or a future
career. In recent years, projects have ranged from
designing and building a hybrid paddle/surf board
to conducting meta-research analysis on the diet of
the Maasai tribe (the latter was highly commended
by The Peter Watson International Scholarship).
Other projects have focused on such things as laws
on capital punishment in the US and Iran, George
Orwell’s political views, as well as the design and
materials used in eco-house building. The options
for topics are limitless.
Although the nature of the project is individuallydriven,
students receive one-to-one guidance to
support the requirements of their title. Tutorial
central processing unit, data exchange, software
development, data types and legal, moral, cultural
and ethical issues associated with the subject. In the
second year, you will study computational thinking,
how computers and programs can be used to solve
problems and produce algorithms in order to describe
and solve problems.
There are two written examinations at the end of
the course and you will complete a programming
assignment in Year 13, where you will apply the
principles of computational thinking to a practical
coding programming task of your choice.
DRAMA & THEATRE
The course is highly-regarded by universities due
to its focus on critical thinking and analysis within
the different components. Despite the fact that the
written element of the course comprises 70% of the
overall grade, there are also regular opportunities for
pupils to develop performance work; the practical
elements include devised work and two scripted
performances. Pupils study a range of set texts and
explore these practically and theoretically before
developing their production concepts for the written
paper.
Embley offers workshops with professional theatre
companies as part of their study of Drama and
Theatre, in order to deepen their study of key
practitioners and theatrical styles. We also offer a
wide range of theatre trips for pupils, as part of the
Live Theatre review component of the course and
to inspire the development of practical work. Our
lessons are delivered in our specialist Performing
Arts facilities.
There are opportunities to develop design and
technical skills, with support from our visiting
theatre technician, as part of our numerous theatre
productions. Pupils can also offer design as their skill
for the practical components in the course.
The Drama co-curriulum offers pupils a plethora
of opportunities to perform each year, with firm
favourites being the school musical, the Senior Play
and showcases. A Level pupils also take active roles in
facilitating co-curricular Drama activities for younger
pupils, including directing productions and leading
clubs and workshops.
ECONOMICS
Our A Level Economics course involves lively
discussion and debate in lessons as we analyse the
current economic climate through the news and
live data to develop an understanding of economic
theories and the interrelationships between micro
and macro economies.
Because many economic problems have more
than one solution, you will learn how to evaluate
information for its relevance and quality. In addition,
you will become proficient in using quantitative
methods effectively across a range of problems and
learn how to apply economic reasoning to policy
issues in a critical manner. The insights this provides
are powerful and can help make sense of some of the
challenges facing societies today.
We use a range of engaging teaching methods,
including class discussion, group work, workshops
and simulation games, such as Student Investor, that
allow you to acquire deep subject knowledge and to
develop a range of interpersonal and critical thinking
skills. Our Economics Society helps prepare you for
national essay writing competitions and the Bank of
England challenges.
To inspire and broaden your horizons further, we
have a programme of specialist guest speakers and
field trips, which include visits to the City of London,
and we run extension classes for those applying to
Oxbridge.
At the end of this two-year course, you will be
assessed through three written papers on markets
and market failure, the national and international
economy, and economic principles and issues.
ENGLISH LITERATURE
English Literature is a very popular and highly
successful A Level subject at Embley. More than any
other subject, it is one which will help you to grow
as an individual and to develop critical cultural skills.
During the course, you will enjoy a wide range of prose,
poetry and drama and, through close critical analysis
and group discussion, learn to read critically, analyse,
evaluate and undertake independent research. These
are all highly valuable skills for higher education and,
more importantly, for life beyond education. Regular
theatre trips are arranged in order to support set
texts and to allow for alternative interpretations and
a range of TV and film interpretations are studied
alongside the reading.
In Year 12, you will study a Shakespeare play, an
anthology of poetry and two prose texts, while
considering the presentation of Love through the
Ages. While in Year 13, you will hone your critical
thinking skills and, following an independent reading
path, you will carry out a critical study of texts
across time, whether it is the Gothic genre, satire and
dystopia, or representations of race and ethnicity,
for example. The course is assessed by two written
papers and a 2500 word essay, but offers far more
than that to those that engage with it.
FRENCH
Studying a Modern Foreign Language at A Level
can open up a wealth of new opportunities and
experiences. French A Level builds on the core skills
of listening, reading, writing and speaking gained
through GCSE. During this course, you will develop
a deeper understanding of French in a variety of
contexts and genres, and learn to communicate
confidently, clearly and effectively in French for a
range of purposes.
What could be better than learning about the lives,
loves, hopes and jealousies of people, both real and
fictional, throughout the ages? Understanding the
methods used by writers, to make political, social and
historical comments about the world as they see it,
is a great foundation for understanding humanity in
general.
SPANISH
Studying a Modern Foreign Language at A Level
can open up a wealth of new opportunities and
experiences. Spanish A Level builds on the core skills
of listening, reading, writing and speaking gained
through GCSE. During this course, you will develop
a deeper understanding of Spanish in a variety of
contexts and genres, and learn to communicate
confidently, clearly and effectively for a range of
purposes.
Our lessons are largely taught in Spanish and our small
class sizes mean that you will quickly develop your
oral fluency and confidence, with individual guidance
given in every lesson and plenty of opportunities for
pair work, group discussions and lively debates.
As part of the course, you will study a wide range
of topics including: social issues and trends; political,
intellectual and artistic culture; immigration and
multicultural societies; and the Arts, literature and
history - such as the Spanish Civil War and magic
realism in Latin-American literature. As well as
textbooks, we use newspaper articles, magazines,
books, online resources and study trips which
provide you with plenty of opportunities to immerse
yourself in the language. At the end of this two-year
course, you will be assessed through three exams:
two written assessments and an internally conducted
and externally assessed speaking paper.
“The teachers’ love for the subject
really comes through in their
teaching.”
At the end of this two-year course, you will be assessed
through three exams: two written assessments and
an internally conducted and externally assessed
speaking paper.
Where could this course take you?
Our students have gone on to study Spanish at
a number of Russell Group universities including
the University College London and the University
of Birmingham. The skills and qualifications that
are gained from studying a language at A Level
are incredibly important tools and Spanish can be
combined with and can complement many courses
at university. With the globalisation of the world
economy, many businesses are keen to employ
students who can speak a second language to a high
level.
SCHOLARSHIPS
We make a limited number of scholarship awards
each year following a competitive process. They
recognise and reward outstanding achievement and
potential in a range of areas that are important to
the school. In return, we expect our scholars to:
• have a strong work ethic,
• take a leading role in all aspects of their
scholarship subject and contribute positively to
school life and our local community,
• act as role models, setting a good example to
those around them.
There is an expectation that scholars will normally
take their discipline at A Level. The value of award
is determined by the Headmaster and scholarships
are reviewed annually against criteria such as talent,
effort and progression.
The Nightingale Scholars’ Society
The Society meets regularly and follows a programme
of talks by experts on a variety of topics. Scholars are
expected to attend small group tutorials with scholar
mentors and complete mini projects each term. The
mini projects enable our scholars to build a portfolio
of work throughout their time with us. The depth and
expectation of these projects will increase as our
scholars progress through the school. Nightingale
scholars are expected to participate fully in the life
of the school. This includes attending co-curricular
events as organised by the Head of Scholars and
scholar mentors and, when appropriate, lead cocurricular
events.
• Academic scholarship applicants will be invited
to an interview with a member of the school’s
Senior Leadership Team.
• Candidates applying for Art & Design, Drama,
Music and Sport scholarships will be invited
to attend an assessment led by our Heads of
Department.
• All candidates will receive a briefing about what
to prepare and what to expect at the assessment
ahead of time.
Honorary scholarships recognise a pupil’s potential
and commitment to a discipline but without a
financial benefit. Pupils are encouraged to take part
in the scholarship programme and benefit from its
opportunities to develop their talent. Honorary
scholars are either identified during the scholarship
application process or during their time at Embley.
They are often invited to apply for full scholarships at
the next available application window.
Academic scholarships
Our Academic scholars show high academic
attainment across the curriculum and contribute to
the intellectual life of the school. They have a thirst
and passion for the academic opportunities at Embley
and take a leading role in relevant co-curricular
enrichment programmes. Academic scholarships
are awarded to pupils who show commitment to
their studies and demonstrate all round academic
excellence. This will be supported by high attainment
in internal and external examinations, the interview
process and a supporting report from the Head of
their current school.
Applying for a scholarship
To support all scholarship applications, each applicant
should complete and return a scholarship application
form. Applications must also include:
• A brief personal statement, written by the
candidate, to explain why he/she should be
considered for the scholarship.
• Provide any certificates/evidence of achievement
to support the application.
Scholarship assessments take place in the January
before September entry.
Art & Design Scholarships
Drama Scholarships
Our Art & Design scholars either demonstrate skill
and ability in a range of artistic areas or a creative
a portfolio of work, produced at home or school
by early January the year before entry. Candidates
will be selected for interview on the quality of their
portfolio.
In the portfolio, we are looking for:
• A range of work showing a variety of skills.
• An ability to use a range of media and techniques
in 2D, 3D and digital media.
people.
• Sketchbooks, scrapbooks and journals which
show genuine commitment, idea exploration and
• For designers, evidence of an understanding of
design and production methods.
Our Drama scholars are talented performers who play
a leading role in all aspects of Drama and Performing
Arts at school and within the community. Scholarships
are awarded based on a candidate’s performance
during an audition and interview with our Head of
Drama. Drama scholars require focus, discipline,
creativity and passion; not just talent. Therefore, we
look at how candidates create, perform and respond
in the audition, as well as their attitude and approach.
Candidates do not need acting or musical theatre
grades to be able to apply. Pupils may wish to submit
any records of achievement in Drama, certificates or
public speaking awards to support their application.
During the audition, candidates will be asked to:
• Perform a monologue learned and prepared
previously (a choice will be sent in advance to
candidates).
• Participate in a group workshop, which involves
a range of practical activities (there is nothing to
prepare in advance for this part of the audition).
All artwork should be mounted and every portfolio
must be clearly labelled with the pupil’s name.
would be expected to participate in a minimum
with our Director of Music. For the auditions,
candidates will be asked to prepare two contrasting
pieces of music:
Our Sport scholars perform to a high standard in
one or more sports, represent the school in a range
of competitive sport within the school programme
and display an excellent standard of personal health
and fitness. Sports scholars are expected to play for
Embley at weekends throughout the year when they
Music that one will need to be arranged.
of instruments or voice.
