Anti-Racism Day of Learning On Friday, October 23 Selkirk College and School District #8 are partners in hosting an anti-racism and intercultural awareness event for all citizens in our region. The event, called Perspective. Learning. Hope: Shifting our Focus Through Awareness, is intended to deepen understanding of racism on a global and local level and to enable us all to work together in moving toward change. The day will include a Mir Lecture featuring award-winning journalist, POWER THROUGH THE TOUGHEST WINTER STORMS anti-racism activist and author, Desmond Cole; a facilitated de-brief; a panel of Selkirk College and high school International students sharing their local experiences; a facilitated inter-cultural awareness activity; and a lunchtime drop-in where you can explore future PD development opportunities with providers of anti-racism tools and trainings. wWe will take time for action planning in which we can discuss what initiatives are already happening here and the next steps we can take in our respective workplaces and sectors. that will support the long-term stability of jobs and economic recovery in the sector. In 2019, government made changes to the Labour Relations Code that were supported by recommendations put forward by an independent and expert review. This review was completed in 2018 by a balanced committee of special advisers, including an employer and a labour representative and included recommendations based on a thorough public consultation. The review identified one important area regarding successorship protections for the forestry sector that needed further consultation before any further recommendations could be made. For this reason, government intends to establish an industrial inquiry commission (IIC) under the code to review contract tendering in the forestry sector, outside the scope of any Indigenous or First Nations interests. “Protecting workers’ job security and benefits will help with the economic recovery of the BC forestry sector,” said Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “That’s why we’ll appoint an IIC to reach out to industry experts, unions and employers to better understand successorship and contract tendering in the sector.” The outcome of an industrial inquiry commission will help guide future potential changes to the Labour Relations Code or the code’s regulations. Improving fairness for workers and ensuring balance in workplaces are shared priorities between government, the BC Green Party caucus and Andrew Weaver, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, and is part of the Confidence and Supply Agreement.
