Magic Moments

I’m going to show my age just a bit here, but I just love the lyrics

and the melody of the old Perry Como song — Magic Moments.

It was both written and recorded by Como and first came out in

1957. Our readers likely won’t have this song in their collection, but

try Googling it. It’s one of those carefree songs that was so typical of

the ’50s – it just made you feel good. And even if I can’t croon like

Como, Bing Crosby, or Frank Sinatra, I find myself singing along.

The lyrics reflect a much simpler time and era with the notion of

“caring and sharing.”

While the song is about romance, magic moments and sharing

and caring are certainly all important in child development. Think

about all of the magical moments a young child experiences on a

daily basis.

For a baby, it starts with that magical first touch of mama’s skin after

birth. That baby knows his or her mama intimately well from inside

the womb, but now it’s different. It’s a magic moment for mom,

too, finally holding and seeing her baby’s face. And for others, too,

who will play a significant role in baby’s life — dad, grandparents,

etc. Every new and loving touch is a caring and sharing moment.

Fast forward through those early years and you’ll encounter thousands

of other magic moments. A first smile and the first belly laugh!

That first taste of fruit, perhaps a sweet bit of watermelon, or a crisp

apple. Rolling over, taking a step, saying “mama” or “dada” — as parents

and caregivers we treasure all of those firsts!

And while the adults are in awe of these moments, the children

are taking them in stride: growing, experiencing, wondering,

learning, mastering, caring and sharing!

All too quickly it’s time for preschool or kindergarten. Caring

and sharing become even more important to the independent,

social life of a child.

First as a parent and now as a grandparent, my words of advice

would be to take note of Perry Como’s message and enjoy

each and every magical moment that you can!

Magic moments, mem’ries we’ve been sharin’

Magic moments, when two hearts are carin’

Time can’t erase the memory of
