PRESIDENT’s
WELCOME
As the new President of Connacht
Rugby, it gives me great pleasure
to introduce this digital programme
for our opening game of
the 2020/21 season.
I’d like to begin on a personal note by
thanking all those who have sent me well
wishes since my election a number of
weeks ago. I am truly honoured to hold this
position and, while it will be a season unlike
any other, I hope to make the most of it.
I am of course conscious that my election
is also a significant step for every woman
involved in Irish rugby. I’d be lying if I said
the all the attention hasn’t been slightly
overwhelming at times, but I am extremely
proud that my own province has become
the first professional rugby team in Ireland
to elect a female President.
My hope now is that my election inspires
more women to get involved in rugby, not
just in Connacht but anywhere in Ireland.
Rugby has given me so much – going back
to when I grew up in Mayo to my association
with Tuam RFC and the Connacht
Rugby Supporter’s Club. If you are on the
fence about joining your local club – no
matter your gender – I cannot encourage it
enough.
Today marks the culmination of months of
hard work both on and off the field to make
this day a reality. We have had some dark
days as a society in the past few months
as COVID-19 affected all walks of life, and
unfortunately, we are not out of the woods
yet. However, my wish today and for the
rest of the season is that this Connacht
Rugby team becomes a beacon of hope
and inspiration for you when times are
tough. For two hours each week you can
put aside any worries you may have and
support your local province who are there
to represent you.
I’d also like to welcome today’s visitors Glasgow
Warriors to The Sportsground, and to wish them
a safe & healthy journey back to Scotland later
today.
To our Official Partners and Business Club
members, thank you for your ongoing support,
particularly in such a challenging economic environment.
Finally, I would like to thank every volunteer
who, in some shape or form, has helped us towards
a ‘Return To Rugby’ at pitches all around
the province. Your efforts and commitment
have been an inspiration to all us and have
shown the very best of the Connacht people.
Whether you’re one of the very fortunate at the
ground, or one of the thousands watching at

Last season was another thrilling season of
epic tackles, running rugby and history-making
tries that culminated with Leinster Rugby
defeating Ulster Rugby in an exciting Final in
AVIVA Stadium.
We are delighted that fans of the GUINNESS
PRO14 will be able to continue to watch all
GUINNESS PRO14 matches played live with
our broadcast partners and are looking
forward to the introduction of Monday night
rugby into the GUINNESS PRO14 schedule.

a year unlike any other, one that none of us
could have predicted and one that continues
to challenge us all daily. Over the course of
the year, the absence of sport left a gap in so
many people’s lives. The return of rugby has

able to be together again in the stands.
