Side Trip:
At the end of the day Sunday, both our
chest-style freezer and our recycling
container were filled to the brim.
I was excited about the former, but
bummed about the latter as it wasn’t our
week for recycling
pickup.
It started Saturday
when I decided to tidy
up the garage. Plastic
grocery bags, cardboard
shipping boxes,
a stack of egg cartons
and a sizable pile of
newspapers quickly
filled our recycling
can.
On Sunday, my husband
and I decided it
was the perfect day for
our annual soup-making marathon, which
progressed from three soup recipes to four,
and then two freezer casseroles with ingredients
I had purchased previously but never
got around to making.
The stew recipe makes a huge batch, with
a long list of ingredients — beef, pork,
bacon, chicken, sausage, onions, celery, carrots,
potatoes, green beans, green peppers,
corn, tomatoes and beef consommé. Our
chili recipe calls for two kinds of beans,
three types of tomato and beef broth. And
the chicken and wild rice soup includes a
gallon of chicken broth — that’s four cardboard
cartons, in case you’re counting.
By the end of the day, every surface in
the kitchen had been utilized, every large
pot we own was filled and the entire house
smelled of savory goodness.
We set aside enough soup for a couple of
meals, and the rest I portioned into smaller
freezer containers. What I failed to remember
was that we purchased a side of beef and
half a hog back in May.
With a little rearranging, everything fit in
the freezer, and by leaving the lid off, all the
cans and cartons made it into the recycling
bin.

FALL FUN IN
WORTHINGTON
Grandpa’s Fun Farm offers
family activities
The name “Grandpa’s Fun Farm”
isn’t a misnomer or an exaggeration.
It really is a lot of fun.
Grandpa’s Fun Farm is located just
outside of Worthington, MN, and for
the past 18 years or so they’ve offered
up fun for the whole family during
the fall months.
Marlyn Nystrom, the Grandpa of
Grandpa’s Fun Farm, runs the farm
with his wife, Jolene. From the beginning,
opening up Grandpa’s Fun
Farm has always been about the fun
factor.
“We originally started out with
just one small miniature golf course
and after that it just kept snowballing.
One thing led to another until
we have everything we offer now,”
Marlyn said.
And they have a lot of offer.
They have an animal exhibit, corn
maze, an arts and crafts barn, a fun
house, trebuchet which launches
pumpkins, a pumpkin cannon, an
apple cannon, zip line, rides, pedal
trikes, play yards, livestock maze, gardens,
music area, pumpkin painting,
two mini golf courses, a concession
stand, air gun apple shooters, adult
trikes, tunnels and a farmers market.
They try to add a new attraction
or re-imagine an old one every year,
and this year’s attraction was inspired
by NBC’s “American Warrior
Ninja” show.
“We had been watching the ‘Ninja’
show on TV and my wife asked if
we could do something like that,”
Marlyn said. “It took a while to
come up with the right angles and
everything, but we’ve got the salmon
ladder, the one where they jump
from one side to the other then the
pole climb where they use a peg and
move it from one spot to another,”
Marlyn said. “Next year we are hoping
to put up a climbing wall alongside
it.”
His favorite attraction though is
one that has quite an impact.
“I love the air cannon. We shoot
a pumpkin right close to a quarter
of a mile,” Marlyn said. “We went
down to an entertainment farm near
Gretna and they had one. I said, ‘I
need one of those,’ and I started putting
it together.”
Marlyn enjoys coming up with
new ways to entertain all those who
stop by the farm, but he really enjoys
just meeting the people who do.
“I really enjoy meeting people and
talking with them. We have a lot of
repeat customers who keep coming
back. We’ve made some good friends

throughout the years,” Marlyn said.
“There’s this one grandparent set who
comes every year since we started.
They were bringing their grandkids
and now they are bringing their great
grand kids. Things like that are my
favorite.”

In light of the continuing coronavirus
pandemic, they are required this
year to get information from each
party just in case something does happen.
Besides that, the fun is still the
main event at Grandpa’s Fun Farm.
“We just have fun and we want
families to have fun,” Marlyn said. F

CANDY
IN THE
VALLEY
Rock Valley
hosts event
downtown
Candy is a major part of Halloween. In fact,
Rock Valley has named their Halloween
celebration in it’s honor. Once again this
year, they’ll be hosting their annual Candy in
the Valley event.
Downtown Rock Valley will become a Halloween
paradise for kids and their families
3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.
“Candy in the Valley is a retail trick or
treat event for kids and adults. Kids can walk
around and show off their costumes and get
candy and treats from the different businesses,”
said Adam Rosman, the Rock Valley Chamber
Director. “It also brings adults downtown to
remind them of the different opportunities for
sales and the businesses that we have in our
downtown area.”
Candy in the Valley is an event that has been
going on for a number of years and is always
a treat for both the families who come to the
event and for the businesses who participate.
This year’s event will be different from years
past.
“The chamber board reviewed and discussed
the event and we decided that if we could do
it in a way to direct traffic and keep families
spaced out and moving throughout downtown

in a safe way, then we wanted to host it,” said
Rosman. “It’s an outdoor event and we are
spacing people out.”
In the past, they also hosted pumpkin painting
or cooking decorating, but they won’t be
doing those things this year.
In general, Rosman is excited about being
able to bring people downtown.
“It’s a community building event. We do a lot
of different programs and business investment
pieces and this is our chance to see the kids and
families coming out,” Rosman said. “It’s also
a chance for these younger families to come
downtown and see the economic impact they
could have by shopping in our downtown.” F

Hartley Halloween
Spectacular on Oct. 30
Pumpkins are out on the porch
and the weather is steadily
changing.
It must mean Halloween is right
around the corner and this year
in Hartley those pumpkins on the
porch just might earn you a prize.
As part of the Hartley Halloween
Spectacular, residents and businesses
can register through
Oct. 25 for the Fall
Porch Decorating
Contest.
“That’s something
that gets more people
involved that might
not usually do a lot
of chamber activities.
It’s easy to participate and an easy
way to earn some chamber bucks,”
said Alexa Albert, a Hartley Chamber
of Commerce board member. “We
did that last year and the year before
that it was scarecrow decorating, so
we’ve kind of broadened the criteria
and now with the porches they can
be either Halloween or just fall decorations.”
Winners will be announced on
Halloween with Hartley Chamber
Bucks awarded to the top three contestants.
Next up on the agenda is the Trunk
or Treat hosted by the Chamber of
Commerce on Friday evening, Oct.
30, starting at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall.
“We do that on Central Avenue
and all the businesses in town are
invited to join in,” Albert said. “We

For many adults the event is just as when so many community events
have been canceled due to the ongoing
coronavirus pandemic.
Having had to cancel the annual
summer celebration, Albert says it’s
especially nice to get back out in the
community and see things at least a
little bit back to normal.
Residents will get to continue that
bit of normalcy the following night
as the citywide trick or treat will take

COSTUMES
& CANDY
Trick-or-treaters parade downtown
The Rock Rapids Halloween Parade is going
on as planned, but one question remains.
What will be the most popular costume
this time around?
The answer is a little bit harder to predict this
year.
“Usually we have a year of movie releases
and we haven’t had that this year,” said Angie
Jager, director of the Rock Rapids Chamber
of Commerce. “So it will be interesting to see
what costumes we have this year.”
Maybe it will be parade of classic, traditional
Halloween ghosts and witches, or princesses,
cowboys, mummies and zombies.
The ever-popular “Frozen” characters are
sure to be in the mix along with many other
Disney favorites.
Of course the ongoing coronavirus pandemic
has been the reason for the lack of movies
and the resulting shortage of costume inspiration.
In regards to the Halloween
Parade, Jager expects
everyone knows the risks
involved and encourages
those who choose to participate
to do so responsibly.
“The main thing will be
for businesses participating
to put the candy in
their treat bags versus
letting kids dig through
a bowl and I think most
them do that anyway,”
Jager said.
Jager also expects the time frame for the parade,
which begins at 4 p.m. in the parking lot
of Sunshine Foods, to expand just a bit.
“Our line at Sunshine gets pretty long so
parents should be conscious of that and the
parade may go a bit longer this year as parents
may choose to
show up later to
not be in as big
of a crowd,” Jager
said. “Everyone
knows the rules
by now — keep
your distance,
stay home if you
or someone in

your family doesn’t feel
good.”
The route itself stays
the same with downtown
businesses typically setting
up shop just outside their
own doors, while those
located away from the route will spread out to
less populated areas of downtown to allow for
plenty of distance between trick-or-treat stops.
This is Jager’s 14th Halloween Parade and
she’s enjoyed seeing familiar faces grow up at
the event.
“It’s always fun to see kids growing up. Last
year maybe they were in a stroller and now
they’re walking on their own,” Jager said. “This

Normal in this case means pint-size goblins,
ghosts and most likely a Princess Elsa or two
strolling along the downtown sidewalks of
Rock Rapids. F
