Since the publication of our last 

Boker Barber‘s Corner Catalogue 

(especially during the pandemicrelated 

forced pause of the 

barbers) not only an incredible 

amount of beard hair has grown, 

but once again a lot of blood 

and sweat has been put into the 

Boker novelties of this catalog. 

Full of pride we present after 

decades of abstinence for the 

first time again real broadswords 

in the exceptional size 8/8 

inch. By the way: inch is not 

equal to inch. We, the citizens 

of Solingen, are special and 

still base our razors on the long 

outdated and largely unknown 

„Rheinish inch“ (26.2 mm). 

In the style of the pithy, almost 

massive Sheffield Throat Cut 

Razor of the Wilhelminian era, 

a truly exceptional knife was 

created at the request of Joth 

Davies from Sheffield, England. 

The bulbous hornbeam handle 

with the 8/8 inch wide blade, 

which is provided with a filigree 

negative etching, does not only 

look good in the skilled hands of 

the barbers of Savills Barbers, 

but certainly also in yours. 

That barbers still like to reach for 

forged razors today is proven once 

again by Alexander „Herr“ (Mr.) 

Feldmann from Mönchengladbach. 

His strictly limited dream razor 

will not only cause a sensation 

in his home salon, but also in 

his mother‘s New York barber 

store. Similar to equipping his 

razor with Barber‘s Notch and 

colorful etching, Mr. Feldmann 

spared no expense or effort in 

equipping his salon. Barber chairs 

from the 1920s, which performed 

their most prominent service on 

the luxurious German cruise ship 

Cap Polonio, and an American 

foaming machine show what his 

customers can look forward to 

in addition to a perfect shave.

eye. But a glance at the details

made of gold-plated Damascus 

and is visible through an elegant 

recess in the desert ironwood

BOKER DAMASCUS STRAIGHT RAZORS 8/8 

The widths of razor blades are 

traditionally given in eighths 

of an inch. So an 8/8“ blade 

is about one inch wide and a 

4/8“ blade is half an inch.

The basic shapes of the dies in 

which our razors are still forged 

today were already made at the 

beginning of the 20th century. 

This explains why they do not 

correspond to the Anglo-Saxon 

unit of inch (25.4 mm), but to the 

long forgotten „Rhineland inch“ 

(26.2 mm). 

The 5/8“ wide blade is probably 

the most common and widely 

used razor shape. Narrower 

razors with a maximum width of 

4/8“ are mainly used by hairdressers 

for shaving the neck or 

for thinning, because the smaller 

blades make it easier to work on 

precise inner radii and contours. 

A wide blade, on the other hand, 

glides more smoothly over the skin 

thanks to its weight and can also 

hold more soap and beard hairs 

before you have to wipe them 

off. Quite apart from the functional 

differences, the rare broad 

blades immediately make the eyes 

of every razor enthusiast shine. 

At this point we therefore recommend 

to all better halves of the 

above mentioned enthusiasts:

A long-cherished wish has finally 

come true with the Boker Master 

Cutter Damascus: an 8/8 inch 

wide dream made of damascus. 

Even though a lot of time has 

passed until the forging of the 

first blank, the efforts have been 

worthwhile. The mighty blade 

with serration on both sides is 

equipped with a Barber‘s Notch 

and is of course sharpened extra 

hollow with ridge on complex 

tone. The bulbous handle made of 

desert ironwood is, unlike all the 

other razors in our range, not classically 

riveted, but rather screwed 

together decoratively. Desert 

ironwood is relatively heavy, very 

hard and extremely tenacious. 

Because of these characteristics it 

is difficult to work with, but at the 

same time it is also particularly 

durable and weatherproof, which 

makes it an ideal material for razor 

handles. To match the Barber‘s 

Notch of the blade, the handle has 

a recess towards the tip of the 

blade. This allows a clear view of 

the decorative intermediate piece, 

which is also made of damascus 

in this extraordinary model. With

The Damascus straight razors are 

an absolute highlight in the more 

than 100-year history of worldwide 

renown collection of high 

quality straight razors by Boker. 

The special exclusivity comes 

from using powder metallurgical, 

stainless Damascus steel from 

Sweden. In a very technically 

demanding and complex process, 

160 layers of Damascus steel are 

produced in a sintering process 

to create the perfect starting 

material for the fine hand-sharpening 

of the blades. The traditional 

extra-hollow grind and the 

exceptionally fine edge harmonizes 

the beautiful, extraordinarily 

fine grain of the natural Damascus 

pattern. The 5/8” wide blade has 

a two-sided serration for a safe 

grip. Boker Damascus straight 

razors are completely handmade 

in the Boker knife manufactory in 

Solingen, in a 150-step process. 

All razors come complete with 

a certificate of authenticity in a 

refined presentation display, serial 

numbered.

the precious wood emphasise the 

elegance and noble appearance 

of this unique piece of craftsmanship. 

The valuable, certified 

imported ebony is very robust 

thanks to its high density and has 

a high resistance to ageing, which 

makes it a preferred choice not 

only for decorative applications. 

As an additional decoration, the 

historical Boker tree emblem is 

expertly inserted into the handle, a 

craftsmanship that is rarely found 

nowadays. The tang is provided

The handles of the noble Boker 

Damascus Burl Birch are made 

from the wood of the burl birch, 

which is native to the far north 

of Europe. The already special 

grain of this wood, which due to 

its special characteristics is often 

used for extraordinary models, 

is further exposed by the stabilisation 

and by the complete 

colouring. The modern handle 

shape fits perfectly to the 6/8 

inch wide blade made of Damascus 

steel with French head and 

is completed by the fine Boker

Even though damascus steels 

have long since ceased to be 

the preserve of an elite minority, 

damascus straight razors 

remain an absolute rarity. 

With conventional damascus 

steels, the extremely thin blade 

grinding with wall is a great challenge, 

as the material tends to 

show nicks and chipping in the 

area of the cutting edge if the 

layers are not in the right position. 

For this reason, we only use 

powder-metallurgically produced 

stainless Damascus steels from 

Sweden for the high-quality 

Damascus razors in our range. 

In a technically very demanding 

and complex process, 160 layers 

of Damascus steel are produced 

in a sintering process to create a 

perfect starting material for the 

fine hand sharpening of the blades. 

The traditional extra-hollow cut 

makes the fine edge sound and 

brings out the beautiful and 

exceptionally fine grain of the 

natural damascus pattern to its 

full potential. The 5/8 inch wide 

blade has a double-sided serration 

of the tang for a secure 

grip. The historical blade stamp 

is carefully laser engraved into 

the fine damascus structure. 

The Boker Damascus razors are 

completely handmade in 150 steps 

at the Boker knife manufactory in 

Solingen. They are delivered with 

certificate in a presentation display 

and with individual serial number.

The combination of hand-selected 

horn handles and a completely 

gold-plated 5/8 inch blade made 

of stainless damascus makes this 

Boker razor a unique one-off. The 

high quality appearance of the horn 

handle is also underlined by the 

use of a third rivet. The Damascus 

blade is additionally decorated by 

the Spanish head. The Spanish 

head is particularly suitable for 

particularly precise shaving and 

the exact processing of the beard

BARBER STORY: SAVILLS BARBERS 

In the case of Savills Barbers, there is 

so much to write about the place and 

person that we hardly know where to 

start. Let‘s start with Sheffield, a city 

that is known to have been shaped by 

steel like Solingen. Inevitably, the backdrop 

of old brick walls and founding 

villas reminds us of the BBC‘s gangster 

epic „Peaky Blinders“. The barbershop 

Savills Barbers by Joth Davies contributes 

a not insignificant part to this 

impression. Here the British tweed is 

still worn in a classically elegant way, 

without appearing to be a disguise. 

At Savills Barbers the handcraft is in 

the foreground and in the centre point. 


Joth started his training as a hairdresser 

and barber in 1988, opened his 

first barbershop in 2006 and a second 

salon followed just three years later. 

When he was finally able to move into 

a time-honoured barbershop with ten 

chairs and washbasin, he merged the 

two previous locations here. 

To be able to serve up to ten customers 

at a time, Joth personally trained the 

appropriate number of barbers. This 

is the only way he can ensure that his 

excellent employees meet his self-imposed 

high professional standards. In 

the meantime, he also sets these high 

standards for the specially developed 

grooming product series Copacetic and 

his renowned Barber Academy. While 

Copacetic cosmetics and accessories 

are the result of professional experience 

and perpetuate the elegance of 

the Golden Twenties, the Shop and 

Academy regularly receive awards at 

barber contests. 

There are again many good barbers 

these days. But the best ones are in 

close corporation, who know how to 

be found internationally. It is therefore 

not surprising that the contact with 

Joth was established through Leen 

and Bertus, the Schorem barbers from 

Rotterdam. For the Boker Barber Story 

razor, it was especially important for 

Joth to orientate himself closely to the 

world-famous massive, pithy Sheffield 

Throat Cut Razors of the Wilhelminian 

period, in addition to his professional 

preferences.

limited to only 99 pieces, is a real 

broadsword. The mighty 8/8 inch 

wide blade is provided with an 

elaborate negative etching, so that 

only in the area of the filigree logo 

the highly-polished blade front is 

visible. The model with serration on 

both sides is also equipped with a 

Barber‘s Notch. At Josh‘s request, 

hornbeam is being used for the first 

time in our range as a staple material. 

The handle is finished with 

a decorative rivet as well as with 

the Boker tree emblem, which is 

carefully inserted by hand into the

This high quality, pure camellia oil 

is made according to a traditional 

Chinese recipe, and has many 

uses. The thin oil is extracted 

from the seed of the camellia 

tree, is taste neutral, odorless, 

and does not dry. The camellia oil 

is food safe and impresses with its 

special purity. 

Corrosion protection 

The acid-free, non-resinous, 

and non-evaporating camellia oil 

is traditionally used to protect 

from corrosion in the care of high 

quality knife blades made from 

carbon steel, as well as tools and 

weapons. It is purely organic and 

perfect for preserving non-stainless 

kitchen knives and straight 

razors as – in contrast to other 

care oils – does not form an emulsion 

with water. 

Wood protection 

The low-viscosity oil quickly 

absorbs into the wood and 

protects from moisture, dirt, and 

UV radiation. Camellia oil is clear, 

does not discolor the wood, and 

brings out the grain beautifully.

While forged razors and the 

classic wet shave are experiencing 

a renaissance, genuine broadswords 

are still rare. For the first 

time in decades, perhaps even 

centuries, 8/8 inch wide razors are 

back in our range. In times when 

the mighty blades were even more 

common, 8/8 inch wide razors 

with straight heads were called 

14s. This marking was stamped 

into the tang of the blade before 

the forged blades were hardened. 

We did not miss this special 

feature and also implemented it in 

our Böker 14. The 8/8 inch wide 

blade not only bears a historical 

blade etching with partial gilding, 

but also a gilded blade back and 

tang, which is elegantly decorated 

by a filigree and detailed laser 

engraving. The complete polishing 

of the blade and the serration on 

both sides of the tang round off 

the features of this knife. 

We have also used historical 

models as a basis for the material 

used for the handle. The handle 

made of dark, slightly transparent 

acrylic blends harmoniously 

into the overall picture due to the 

subtle brass inlay. With authentic

BOKER COUNT OF BERG 

Not far from the company headquarters 

of the Boker Manufactory 

in Solingen, we find the hallmark 

of the Bergisches Land region, the 

castle Burg an der Wupper. It is 

also one of the largest castles in 

western Germany, and the largest 

reconstructed castle in the state 

of North Rhine-Westphalia. The 

famous history of Castle Burg is 

inseparably linked to the Duchy 

Berg and the Count of Berg (Haus 

Berg, 1068-1225). 

On this occasion we decided to 

dedicate a series of straight razors 

to the three counts of Berg, which 

symbolizes parts of their lives. 

This tribute is reminiscent of the 

remarkable property and influence 

of the counts with impressive 

adornments made from 24-karat 

gold. Adolf II, Count of Berg, built 

the new castle (”Novus Mons,“ 

today known as Castle Burg) at 

the Wupper, erected on top of 

a preceding for tress from the 

10th century. The influence and 

wealth of Count Adolf II of Berg 

in the Rheinland-Westfalen region 

was tremendous. In those days, 

it was commonplace to split the 

inheritance among the six sons 

of Adolf. However, this represented 

a problem for the house 

of Berg, since this division would 

reduce the value and cost the 

Berg dynasty its influence. Since 

his eldest son (also Adolf) had 

already died in 1148 at Damascus 

during the Second Crusade, his 

sons Friedrich and Bruno entered 

into the clergy, and his youngest 

son Adolf was excluded from the 

inheritance due to his young age. 

In 1160, the Bergish realm was 

split between Adolf’s sons Everhard 

and Engelbert. 

EVERHARD, COUNT OF THE MARK 

Everhard, older than Engelbert, 

received the Westphalian 

possessions with the castles 

Altena and Hovel, and the abbeys 

Werden, Essen, and Cappenberg. 

This shows that for Adolf II, the 

Rhine-Franconia possessions 

were likely of lower value 

compared to the Westphalian. 

Everhard founded the Altenaer 

line - his descendants later called 

themselves Counts of the Mark. 

ADOLF III, COUNT OF BERG 

Engelbert I of Berg received 

the Rhine-Franconia inheritance 

and continued the name Berg 

in his family. The center of his 

domain was the castle Burg an 

der Wupper, which was built by 

his father (Adolf II). Engelbert 

I died in 1189 during the Third 

Crusade. His oldest son, Adolf III, 

succeeded him as Count of Berg. 

His reign fell on a period of warring 

conflicts, which led to his participation 

in the Crusades. Adolf went 

to the Holy Land during the Fifth 

Crusade in 1218, and died from an 

epidemic on August 7 of that year, 

as Commander of the Rhine and 

Friesian siege troops at Damiette 

in the Nile Delta. He had no son, 

therefore the Altena-Berg branch 

ceased. 

ENGELBERT II, COUNT OF BERG 

After the death of Adolf III, the 

House of Limburg, into which 

Adolf ‚s daughter Irmgard had 

married, staked its claim to the 

entire Bergish estate. While the 

daughter of Adolf III was entitled 

to an inheritance even in that 

time, Engelbert II, the brother of 

Adolf III, claimed the inheritance 

for himself. The resulting dispute 

was not settled in a legal process, 

but by violence over the course of 

two feuds. Engelbert rejected the 

Limburg claim through the force 

of arms and took over the rule 

of the County Berg as Engelbert 

II. Engelbert II, Count of Berg, 

later called ”The Holy,” was also 

known as Engelbert I, Archbishop 

of Cologne. With his murder in 

1225, the Bergish counts in this 

line came to an end, as the male 

line of the Bergish counts ended 

with the death of Engelbert II. 

As a result, Berg went to House 

Limburg, which was thus finally 

able to assert its inheritance claim.

The strikingly ground and gilded 

back of the polished 5/8“ blade 

is an absolute highlight in the 

Boker selection. The elements of 

the blade etching, adorned with 

gold, are reminiscent of the realm 

of Count Everhard of the Mark, 

with the coat of arms of the city 

of Hamm, which is derived from 

House Berg. The tang as well 

as the blade with rounded head, 

features a double-sided serration. 

Hand selected horn scales with 

decorative pins. Delivered in a 

refined presentation display with 

certificate of authenticity and 

individual serial number.

2 COUNT ADOLF III. 

This extraordinary 6/8“ straight 

razor symbolizes the death of 

Adolf III, Count of Berg, during the 

Fifth Crusade in Egypt. The end 

of the polished blade is lined by 

a French head, which underlines

intarsia or mother-of-pearl clips. 

Employing cutting-edge production 

methods, a wafer-thin layer 

of colorful abalone is applied to 

a carrier and encased in transparent 

acrylic. The resulting durable 

material is perfect for making 

straight razor handles, enriching 

the piece with unusual colors and 

a three-dimensional look. 

Paua are shellfishs of the abalone 

genus, but unlike abalones they are 

only found in the unspoilt nature 

of New Zealand‘s coastal waters. 

They have been used by the Maori 

for many centuries as traditional 

body ornaments and are still used 

today as decorations for figures, 

weapons and meeting houses. 

The impressive handles are absolutely

methods, a wafer-thin layer of

BARBER STORY: HERR FELDMANN 

Differently than the name could let 

it assume, the pilgrimage place for 

followers of the skillful beard care 

in the Marienhof passage in Moenchengladbach 

has nothing to do with 

a Marienerscheinung. The creator 

of this secular place of pilgrimage 

is Alexander „Herr“ Feldmann, who 

effortlessly succeeds in once again 

clearly standing out within the colorful 

and versatile barber scene. 

Already the straightforward, sober 

appearance of the name „Herr Feldmann 

| Barber - Hairdresser - Second 

Hair“ reveals that Alexander Feldmann 

somehow grasps his profession 

differently and even more broadly 

than his professional colleagues. 

This perceptible difference has developed 

completely out of his craft, 

because his parents have both always 

been hairdressers. His mother still 

runs a popular barbershop in New 

York, where he was also allowed 

to learn the basics of his trade. He 

regularly visits her in the States, of 

course also to exchange professional 

experiences. And gradually it is no 

longer clear at first glance from which 

direction trends and techniques are 

changing across the Atlantic. 

Unlike most barbers, Mr. Feldmann 

naturally uses only traditionally manufactured 

razors and no interchangeable 

blades for a wet shave. He 

carefully prepares the skin for this 

in several steps. First a treatment 

with shaving oil follows, then a hot 

compress is applied to the face. 

Then a high-quality shaving cream is 

applied, which is then covered with 

heated shaving foam from a foaming 

machine specially purchased in the 

USA. 

The customer experiences the careful 

shave with elaborate preparation on 

one of the two Barber Chairs manufactured 

in Chicago in the Golden 

Twenties, which performed their 

most prominent service on the luxury 

German cruise ship Cap Polonio. 

This type of classic shaving is only 

possible thanks to the consistently 

implemented hygiene concept. The 

disinfection of all tools after each 

customer and the weekly hygiene 

briefings that Alexander Feldmann 

and his staff have always held are all 

the more important, especially in the 

era of COVID-19.

coating on the base of a complete 

24-carat gold plating, we would like

racing mare Schwarzgold (Black 

Gold). In order to do uncompromising

sovereignty of the mare in the knife 

dedicated to her, we had to come up 

with a number of ideas. 

Finally we came to the solution to 

completely coat the extra hollow 

and wall ground blade with gold in 

the first step. This is the only surface 

on which the ruthenium coating, 

applied using the negative process, 

adheres optimally and obtains its 

incomparable anthracite color and 

silky sheen. Ruthenium is a chemical 

element with the element symbol Ru 

and atomic number 44. It is an extremely 

hard platinum metal that is

congruent with the exceptional 

character of the razor‘s namesake.

CONSTRUCTION AND MANUFACTURING 

Despite all industrial progress 

since the foundation of the Boker 

Manufactory in 1869, some historic 

production methods are still used 

for making a Boker straight razor. 

We definitely preserved the passion, 

experience and perfection in choosing 

our materials and executing 

each of the production steps we 

would like to explain to you here. 

We exclusively grind our straight 

razor blades extra hollow with belly. 

The belly lies in front of the strong 

in the world that have mastered 

this ultimate skill in straight razor 

production. 

The scales department manually 

assembles nickel silver pins, 

washers, and spacers to the 

blades. Wood and stag require 

special dexterity, as these natural 

materials can tear when too much 

pressure is applied. 

At the forge, the basic material is a 

round rod cut to length to create the 

so-called cropped piece. The splitter 

is heated until red hot, and drop 

forged with a 1,500 lb rammer. Next, 

the slugs have to cool to 392° F for 

two days in an annealing furnace.

in which the blades can be ground 

out so thin and still retain sufficient 

stiffness, despite their flexibility. 

There are only a handful of the 

best and most specialized grinders 

The slugs are once again straightened

thermic treatment the perfect combination 

of edge-holding property and 

flexibility of the steel is created. 

In the grinding shop, the extra 

hollow grind with belly is created. 

The slugs are ground in 18 individual 

steps, from rough grinding, to 

milling, to glazing. 

Finally, the blade is honed by hand 

on several bench whetstones with 

increasingly finer grits. After the 

final stropping, the sharpness of 

the straight razor is tested on a 

freely suspended human hair.
