Heart-warming

Italian Food

Rocco Italian Restaurant has to be one of my favourite places

to dine in the City, not just for its friendly staff and warm atmosphere

but for its traditional homecooked Italian food –

and portions!

Like everyone in the hospitality industry Rocco’s has

struggled to make it through 2020 and with the rule of six

and tier 2 being in place Christmas Parties may be a no go

this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a meal out

with your family and eat some quality food, especially as

Children are catered for and more than welcome. Which is

exactly what my partner Mike and I did on a Friday

afternoon.

The lunchtime menu is fantastic at Rocco’s, main course for

just £7.95, 2 courses for £9.95 or three courses for £12.95 and

believe me, its well worth the money! Plenty of choice and

available Monday to Saturday 12pm – 2.30pm.

It was Mike’s first time at Rocco’s and he was pleased to see

such good choice on offer for a lunchtime menu, pastas, pizza,

fish and much more. We decided on the Pate Della Casa and

Bruschetta Romano for starters.

Arriving swiftly both dishes were accompanied by a

beautifully dressed fresh salad, Mikes pate was smooth,

creamy and totally delicious, fantastic portion and toast

quantity. My bruschetta Was warm crunchy ciabatta oozing

with olive oil and garlic and topped with fresh plum tomatoes

and basil. Both starters were so full of flavour, very plentiful

and a perfect start to our Italian lunch.

Mike chose the Lasagne Al Forno for main and I had opted

for the Fettucine Con Pollo E Spinach. Both arrived sizzling

hot and looked mouth-watering, I could not wait to tuck in.

My pasta dish was flat pasta with roasted chicken, baby

spinach, baby plum tomatoes, shallots, white wine and a

creamy parmesan sauce, it looked fantastic and I can honestly

say it tasted better than it looked! Such a perfect combination

of ingredients brought together to create a creamy

masterpiece. The chicken was succulent, the tomatoes added

an extra flavour but best of all was the luscious sauce, I would

highly recommend this main.

Mikes lasagne was still bubbling, and was a pot of rich, juicy,

meaty lasagne. There was plenty of meat and a rich and tasty

tomato sauce, strings of cheese and lasagne sheets, this was a

proper heartly Italian dish that did defeat Mike. Baring in

mind it was cold outside, we really couldn’t have picked better

dishes to warm us up, although I would like to come back and

try their freshly baked pizzas soon (also available on the

lunchtime menu).

With bellies full we did debate a dessert but as it was only a

few pounds extra we opted for the homemade cheesecake and

tiramisu, both created on site. It would be a hard choice to decide

which was nicer, if you are a fan of tiramisu then this is

just a must, soft sponge layers of cream and the perfect taste

of coffee with creamy and topped with chocolate sauce, fantastic!

However I would say that the cheesecake does give it a

run for its money as the base was really buttery so it didn’t

just snap as the spoon cut through it and the topping was

light and airy a fantastic combination of textures and

flavours.

We were delighted with our choices and really enjoyed every

mouthful. On an evening, an á la carte menu is on offer and

during December a special set Christmas menu is available

along with a Christmas day lunch and New Years Eve set

menu, all sounding fantastic! Just pop inside for a menu or

see online.

If dining out isn’t for you at the moment, then let Rocco come

to you. Rocco have teamed up with Just Eat to offer a free delivery

service on orders over £20, same homemade Italian

quality delivered to your door!

Whether you dine in, delivery, lunchtime menu or a Christmas

special, you will not be disappointed. And being located

opposite Fold Street car park at the bottom of town easy access

and great parking is always available.

I hope you get to experience Rocco Italian Restaurant really

soon.

Bringing the Taste of Bangladesh

to Bridgnorth...

Early on in 2020 the award-winning

team from Eurasia Asian restaurant in

Bridgnorth toured some of the best

restaurants in Bangladesh to gain fresh

ideas and inspiration for its customers.

The team already have an extensive

knowledge of true aspects of

Bangladeshi cuisine and understanding

of the roots of its colour and flavours

and took this opportunity to bring more

exciting new flavours and inspiration.

The trip was to explore more authentic

flavours and the original spice trial of

Bangladesh. The visit was organised by

Silver Village Dhaka and certified by the

Bangladesh Food Association and

Chamber of Business and Commerce in

the historic city of Sylhet.

Picking up many ideas, they have been

able to bring back amazing new tastes

and flavours and transform them into

delicious authentic dishes for their

customers in Bridgnorth.

Whilst in Bangladesh, the team visited

two distinct districts, seeking advice

from different restaurants and experts

FIRSTLY, MORGAN

PAYNE & KNIGHTLY

ESTATE AGENTS HOPE

EVERYONE IS KEEPING

SAFE AND WELL DURING

THESE DIFFICULT AND

CHALLENGING TIMES.

Like majority of industries in the current market there

is a lot of uncertainty regarding the economy. Sellers

are questioning whether it is the right time to sell and

buyers are asking if it is a good time to purchase. In

fairness this is a fantastic time to sell and buy! With

the chancellor announcing the stamp duty cap lifting

from £125,000 - £500,000 we have been achieving

record breaking property prices for most of our

listings across the West Midlands and Shropshire. In

September 2020 Morgan Payne & Knightly achieved

sales equating to just over £2.4million! From first time

buyers to home movers looking to upscale or

downscale, through to property investors, these have

been great times to acquire property throughout the

region. We have witnessed some of the greatest rises

in property prices across the country where there has

been a national average of 2.1%, where we are seeing

on average 6% increase regionally!

Subsequently, this is a fantastic time for property

investors purchasing with rental yields surpassing

previous highs and demand for rental being more

prevalent than prior years. We have seen rents rise up

to a 15% increase in some areas and have vetted

professional tenants that have moved into these

properties with delighted investors / landlords.

Morgan Payne & Knightly can cater a personal

bespoke letting service that suits all landlords who

may have a single property to a large portfolio. We

will offer a personal service to cater for your individual

needs.

Furthermore, Morgan Payne & Knightly have recently

partnered with SDL auctions offering vendors a 0%

commission in selling their residential or commercial

properties through auction! The bidding is completed

remotely and again SDL auctions are recording record

breaking auction prices, maximising vendor returns.

You can contact us today for further queries regarding

the auction route.

You can call one of our property experts today for a

free no obligation valuation to ascertain a correct

price for your home or property! One of our team can

assist in valuing the property then arrange a sit down

with you to explain a strategy that Morgan Payne &

Knightly Estate Agents will employ to take your home

/ property to the market, maximising your return.

Following our success in the Wolverhampton Branch,

led by Ms Jules Deverux, we are pleased to announce

that we are opening our Telford office at 63 High

Street, Dawley, Telford, TF4 2EX in November 2020!

This branch will be headed by Mrs Samantha Brough,

with 14 years of experience in Estate Agency and

leading multiple branches throughout South

Staffordshire, bringing a wealth of experience to

Telford.

Morgan Payne & Knightly also specialise in

commercial property headed by our commercial

property director Mr Robert Ashley brining a wealth

of industry expertise to the Midlands and Shropshire.

From commercial lettings and sales to property

management, all aspects of commercial property are

catered for.

For all your property needs we specialise in:

Residential Sales, Residential Lettings and Property

Management, Commercial Property Sales,

Commercial property Lettings and Property

Management, Residential & Commercial Property

Auctions and can introduce clients to independent

Residential and Commercial financial advisors.

Being independent estate agents, we provide a

personal bespoke service that can cater to all your

requirements. Feel free to call a branch local to you to

When was the last

time you went

to Bilston?

You may have used the Black Country Route and passed

through it but one of the undiscovered gems of the Black

Country is Bilston.

First mentioned in AD985 as Bilsatena and later mentioned in

the Domesday Book as Billestune the town was mainly rural

up until the 19th Century.

Bilston then developed Coal mines and Factories and Many

thousand of houses were built to consolidate this new

expansion.

During the 20th Century Wolverhampton Council replaced

these houses with Council properties and this is the idea that

many people have of Bilston today, however, this could not be

further from the truth!

Bilston Urban Village is a development of 17 acres of Brownfield land which will be turned into 100,000 square feet of

Industrial and Commercial units. Bilston Urban Village is also turning 27 acres of land into 420 homes and with the

development of Loxdale Primary School and the South Wolverhampton &

Bilston Academy, your Children's education is supported and with the Bert

Williams Leisure Centre, your health is supported!

With the White Rabbit, a Marston's Family Pub, also forms a key component

of Bilston's Urban Village. On top of that with 35 acres of Landscaping,

developing green space into a conservation and recreation area, Bilston

suddenly becomes a desirable and comfortable place to live.

In the Centre of Bilston there is the Indoor & Outdoor Market. With a lot of

shops closing down this really is a place where you can get everything all

under one roof, from fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish to sorting

out all your Christmas presents, with that in mind pop and see N&R Gold

inside the market, they have all the Gold & Jewelry you could dream of and

if you take advantage of there Christmas Club you can pay for it weekly!!

Next to N&R Gold is Gails Blinds, a family business that you can trust!

Just up the road from the Market is the premises of Both Tile Choice and Bilston Bathrooms, two brilliant companies under

one roof on Millfields road, so if you're looking to do your house up for Christmas then this is well worth a visit.

All in all Bilston is well worth a visit, Pop along and discover a hidden gem!!

the wider West Midlands, Staffordshire and

Shropshire. Whether you need advice

It is very important to plan estates well in

Clairvoyant and Artist for details

Pisces - (19th February - 20th March)

The Waxing Gibbous Moon on November 23rd sees that

sense of 'Individuality' winning, as you seem to get chosen,

or your idea wins! Competitions are well worth entering at

this time... Adaptability and choices are tight as you have

to convince people that you will NOT go with the majority....

At home Christmas plans see you biting your tongue

around the December 21st First Quarter Moon.... Smile

sweetly and have a mince pie Pisces...

Aries - (21st March - 20th April)

Aries the dark nights late November sees the 25th and

26th in its Waxing Gibbous phase seeing passions

increase in the love life! By the Moon First Quarter phase

on December 22nd a sense of competitiveness builds, so

don't get drawn into any 'I can do better than you'

situations on the 'gift giving front' it's not about the cost,

it's the thought that counts, and that's what matters!

Taurus - (21st April -21st May)

Taurus the Waning Gibbous phase of Nov 1st is a time to

think about your reputation, so please don't be rash, hot

bloodied or impatient...However by the Christmas period

December 24th to 26th the Waxing Gibbous phase brings

you are feeling of being more recognised for your worth

and you’re a lot more settled, put your feet up and chill....

Gemini - (22nd May - 21st June)

The Full moon and Lunar Eclipse on November 30th sees

solutions appearing as if by magic! Powered up by the

eclipse this is a good time to strike out alone on projects...

Motherly issues should be addressed whether it be in role

as mother or as child, make sure 'Mother' figures are

recognised for all that they do....

Cancer - (22nd June - 22nd July)

Cancer, November 5th sees the Moon in its Waning

Gibbous phase so prepare at work to be adaptable and

to have to juggle! By December 30th the Full Moon brings

in feeling of fulfilment with a sense of achievement, you

did it! But let this new year’s resolution be to take a few

irons out of the fire, simplify life to make it more

enjoyable...

Leo - (23rd July - 23rd August)

Leo the Last Quarter Moon of November 8th brings in

challenges, 'riding the waves of emotional extremes', yet

the advice is to stick to your principles, your sense of

right! and do not change your mind! This December's

decisions are vital to your long-term plans...

Virgo - (24th August - 22nd September)

December 7th and 8th sees the Moon last quarter

bringing in a sense of 'peacekeeping', at home or at work

you may be the one negotiating, the voice of reason!

Other people’s passions are blinding them and making

them take knee jerk reactions, this sees you 'smoothing

things' behind the scenes, you’re the one who manages

to stay calm and ahead of the game... Deep breathes..

Libra - (23rd September - 23rd October)

What's got into you Libra? The Waning Crescent Moon on

December 9th sees your confidence going through the

roof, ignoring what others tell you, and jumping right in

to situations, BUT 'gambling type situations' actually

bring extreme good fortune, be it bringing money or

splendid opportunities or circumstances....

Scorpio - (24th October - 22nd November)

Wow it is a busy month for Scorpio! Mercury comes

November 10th bringing awaited letters, emails, and

news! The New Moon November 15th soon after sees

new beginnings! Venus then enters November 21st

bringing a wake up in the love life, and as well as that

there are your birthdays to plan for! All systems go

Scorpio!

Sagittarius - (23rd November - 21st December)

Sagittarius it’s about budgeting this yule tide, that

doesn't sound exciting but it is necessary, Mid December

around the 15th watch yourself at Christmas gatherings,

not everyone needs to know your business! But in

private regarding the relationship front speaking about

feelings helps.... If you’re single maybe it’s about telling

someone how you feel? If in a relationship, get your

cards on the table and chat....!

Capricorn - (22nd Dec - 20th January)

December 20th Mercury comes easing communications

and discussions that have been put off or delayed...

where as you may want to play it cool and dissociate its

actually better to be a team player... weighing up pros

and cons, discussions may be coming soon of important

house moves for you or someone close....

Aquarius - (21st January - 18th February)

Jupiter enters Aquarius December 19th bringing quite a

bit of change! Healing can be helped through 'talking' and

'listening' Prosperity and good fortune can come through

investment right now especially if linked to long distance

travel relating to business. Just keep an eye on your sense

of ethics and you’re onto a winner...

WINE:

SOME ROSEY

FAVOURITES

Rosé wines have been very popular for drinking during summer months.

But, I now find that ‘pink’ wines are a regular choice, for many,

throughout the year. Today, these wines are produced by a good number

of countries, globally, satisfying wine lovers (and demand), worldwide.

The rose colour adds ‘something’ to a dining table, including al fresco

dining. Events and numerous occasions are enhanced by these elegant,

colourful wines, in varying shades. They also make splendid pre dining

drinks, as well as being perfect accompaniments to a lot of cuisine, such

as seafood and pasta dishes, etc.

CANTI EXTRA DRY is a very popular choice for many (Italy 11% vol). I found

this Vino Spumante production to have a good, enticing bouquet of fruits and a

fresh mouthfeel, with a very pleasant flavour. The persistent perlage adds to the

experience, splendidly.

Other popular ‘sparklers’ – with a lower and alcohol free content – include

EXTRA SPECIAL PINK MUSCAT. Grape juice concentrate is blended with

sparkling water to produce this refreshing beverage. FREIXENET ALCOHOL

FREE SPARKLING (Spain) is a further production that pleases many., with its

light and fruity flavour.

EXTRA SPECIAL PINOT GRIGIO is a rosé from Italy (12% vol). This wine and

has a very pale pink colour, which attracts to the elegant experience for the

mouth’s pleasures and on to the palate’s enjoyment. Staying with Italian

productions, CANTI PINOT GRIGIO DELLE VENEZIE (12% vol) has many

devotees. Again, regularly selected by numerous ‘pink’ lovers, this wine certainly

does not disappoint.

Over in the France section, two that ‘caught my eye’ were VIN DE PROVENCE

(13% vol) and PROPHECY (12.5% vol). I found the former, with its delicate pink

salmon colour, to be refreshingly dry and elegant and the latter, which also has

good flavours of red fruits, to follow the nasal senses, wonderfully. Last, (but not

least) ROSE LES ESTIVALES (France 12% vol) is my finishing personal

selection. Refreshing and with a pleasant floral bouquet, leading to the fruit

flavours, right through to the palate’s sensation and enjoyment, to the end..

I located these wines at an Asda store, where I found great value on their

extensive drinks sections, which include award–winning productions.

As always, enjoy!

Fine and contemporary Art in Broseley

A creative couple with a life‐long devotion to art

have taken an active step in their determination to

share art with all.

Ann and Mike Fraser upped sticks from their idyllic

French home to open The Angel Gallery in

Broseley, inspired by their passion to reveal the

pleasures and rewards of art to as many people as

possible. “ Art is too important not to be shared”.

They feel that they have found a very special place

in Broseley, and local creativity inspires them

every day.

They opened a beautifully appointed exhibition

space last year – which is free and open to all ‐ .

and have already forged strong links with local

artists and art focused groups.

Ann, herself has been awarded a number of prizes

for her art, had her works accepted on a number

of occasions by The Royal Academy of Art Summer

Exhibition and had her works accepted in galleries

ranging from Paris to New York by way of

Brussels, London and Edinburgh.

At present there are 238 artworks being

displayed, complimenting the theme of

“Endangered Species” . From a tiger pondering his

lunch to a butterfly gathering nectar from a

flower. There is also a wide range of greetings

cards, many of which are hand made, and a strong

selection of art and craft works like wood turning

and creative glass.

Being a gallery, there is plenty of space to step

back and admire a work, which is also convenient

for social distancing.

The gallery, which at the top end of the

High Street in Broseley, is open from

11am to 5pm Wednesday to Sunday until

the 20th. Of December.

Home Cooking at Christmas

Try roast duck as an easy alternative to

the usual turkey dinner on Christmas Day.

A sticky Seville orange and marmalade

glaze makes it even more festive

INGREDIENTS:

1 oven-ready duck ,

about 2 kg

2 oranges , halved

60g Seville orange

marmalade

METHOD

STEP 1: Expose and cut out the wishbone. This makes the duck

easier to carve once cooked. A butcher can do this for you.

STEP 2: Heat oven to 240C/220C fan/gas 9. Lightly score the

skin on the duck all over, and make a deep cut from inside the

body into each leg.

STEP 3: Season the duck well. Heat an ovenproof frying pan

over a low heat. Place the duck on its side with the thigh touching

the pan for 15 mins. Turn and cook on the other side for 15 mins

more.

STEP 4: Turn the duck breast-side down, then transfer the pan

to the oven and cook for 5 mins. Drain the fat from the pan, turn

the duck onto its back and continue to cook for 15 minutes.

MARMALADE

GLAZED

ROAST DUCK

By Raymond Blanc

STEP 5: Meanwhile, cut both oranges in half, then cut 4 wedges

from half an orange. Heat a small frying pan over a medium heat,

then cook the orange wedges in the dry pan for 1 min on each

side to lightly caramelise.

STEP 6: Remove the orange wedges from the pan and set

aside. Squeeze the juice from the remaining orange halves into

the hot pan and reduce by half. Add the marmalade, take off the

heat, add 1 tbsp water and stir together.

STEP 7: After 15 mins of roasting, brush the marmalade glaze

over and continue to roast for a final 10 mins. Rest for 20 mins.

STEP 8: Carve by cutting the leg and thigh away, then

separating the leg from the thigh. Carve slices of breast and serve

with the orange wedges to squeeze over.

INGREDIENTS:

85g pack sage &

onion stuffing mix

300g sausagemeat

90g cooked chestnuts

, chopped

50g dried

cranberries

12 rashers smoked

streaky bacon or

pancetta

By Barney Desmazery

STEP 1: Put the stuffing mix in a bowl and pour over

150ml boiling water. Leave the mix to absorb. When cool,

add the sausagemeat, chestnuts and cranberries and

bring everything together with your hands. Cut each

rasher of bacon in half lengthways so you get 24 long

strips of bacon.

STEP 2: Cross two bacon strips, then roll a

walnut-sized ball of the stuffing mix and sit it on the

cross. Wrap the stuffing in the bacon and sit on a lightly

oiled baking tray, cross-side up. Repeat to make 12

stuffing balls. Can be made up to two days ahead and

chilled. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and roast the

stuffing balls for 25-30 mins until the bacon is crisp and

the stuffing is cooked.

SHERRIED SPROUT &

SAVOY GRATIN

By Sophie Godwin – Cookery writer

Take Brussels sprouts and cabbage to a new level with this festive

gratin containing cream, cheese and a slug of sherry.

Ideal for Christmas or Boxing Day

METHOD

STEP 1: Heat oven to 200C/180C

fan/gas 6. Toss the cabbage wedges and

sprouts with the oil, garlic and thyme in a

large gratin dish. Season well, then roast for

25 mins.

STEP 2: Meanwhile, melt the butter in a

saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook for a

couple of mins until it begins to turn golden.

Remove from the heat then, whisking

constantly, gradually pour in the sherry,

followed by the milk and cream. Put the

sauce back on the heat and cook for 3-4

mins, whisking constantly, until you have a

thick sauce. Grate in a generous amount of

nutmeg, season well and set aside. Mix the

breadcrumbs with the cheese.

STEP 3: Take the sprouts and cabbage out

of the oven, pour over the sauce and top

with the cheesy breadcrumbs. Can be made

a day ahead, and then reheated. Heat grill to

200C and grill the gratin for 15 mins until

the top is golden and crisp. Leave to stand

for 5 mins before serving.

LEMON

MERINGUE

FRIDGE

CAKE

INGREDIENTS:

150ml fino sherry

600ml whole milk

300ml double cream

nutmeg , grated

60g dried breadcrumbs

60g hard cheese , grated

(parmesan, comté or pecorino

all work well)

This tangy dessert looks impressive but takes very little

effort – most of the ingredients are ready-made, so it is

simply a matter of construction

INGREDIENTS:

2 x 750ml

bottles red wine

100ml Cointreau

peeled zest and

juice of 2 large

oranges

pared zest of 1

lemon

120g golden

caster sugar

2 cinnamon

sticks

3 star anise

4 cloves

slices of orange

METHOD

Put all the ingredients (except the slices of

orange) in a slow cooker on low for 1 1/2 - 2hrs

until hot. Ladle into heatproof glasses and serve

with slices of orange. Using the 'keep warm'

setting (if your cooker has one) will ensure the

mulled wine stays hot during the party.

INGREDIENTS:

Drizzle of sunflower oil for

greasing

1 ½ packs (about 300g) buttery

biscuits (we used Fox's Crinkle

Crunch Butter)

METHOD

STEP 1: Grease and line a 900g loaf

tin with baking parchment. Line the

base with a row of biscuits. In a bowl,

whisk the lemon zest and juice,

mascarpone, cream, sugar and 50g

lemon curd until thick and holding its

shape. Transfer roughly 1 /4 of the

mixture to a bowl and chill in the fridge

for later.

STEP 2: Layer the mascarpone and

biscuits into the tin, and add the

remaining lemon curd in spoonfuls

between the layers. Break some biscuits

to fill any gaps. You should have about

2 lemons , 1 zested and juiced,

1 sliced to serve

400g mascarpone

400ml double cream

25g icing sugar

100g lemon curd

10 mini meringue

four layers of biscuits, finishing with a

layer of cream. Wrap the tin in cling film

and chill for at least 8 hrs, or up to

48 hrs.

STEP 3: When you’re ready to serve,

unwrap the tin and turn the pudding

out onto a platter or board. Peel off the

parchment. Crush 4 of the mini

meringues to a rubble texture and stir

through the reserved mascarpone mix.

Spread across the top of the pudding,

then press the remaining mini

meringues and lemon slices on top.

Leftovers will keep for one day.

Health & Wellbeing

Uncertainty is something that the human

mind battles with, we try and make sense of

things. We like patterns and meaning and to

an extent we like predictability – it’s this that

makes us feel safe. In the absence of certainty

and amidst the presence of adversity, we

really do adapt and we all benefit from the

belief that things will change, improve and

ultimately give us an opportunity for

learning and improvement.

POWER

THE

HOPE

OF

As we approach the end of an incredibly challenging year, we thought we would

offer a message of hope to you all, we have all chartered these waters in our own

way but now is a time of great reflection and hibernation, a time to recharge the

batteries and take great care of ourselves and process what we have been living

through and the lessons we have therefore learnt.

Imagine for a second a person

in your life who you enjoy

spending time with, someone

who lifts you, who embraces

life and no-matter what has the

internal belief that we will all

collectively get through.

Call this person ‘Hope’,

visualise her. Maybe she

embodies or represents

someone you lean towards

when you have lost some

hope? Notice how she makes a

choice to gracefully accept a

situation, she chooses to take

courageous steps to change

anything about a situation that

she can, but she also knows

when she cannot make

changes. This kind of

personality type accepts that

you cannot control life, but

hope can give strength to keep

going. As Steven Hawkins once

said; “Where there is life there

is hope”.

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

Hope is a way of thinking based on a deeply held belief

system. It is not suggesting that there cannot be feelings of

sadness, despair or loneliness, it is not suggesting that we

deceive ourselves into accepting an unhealthy lifestyle or

partnerships either. Hope binds together our deepest human

motivations and triumphs and lights a fire within ourselves

that drives us through adversity, hope is both fierce in nature

but also mindful and graceful.

In Occupational Therapy we work with a person to assist

them to accomplish their goals. Hope related cognitions are

important, they drive us to make goals and to work towards

future change. For us to get through a tough situation and

remain hopeful we need to adapt our thinking styles and

improve some of our coping behavious… here are some tips

on living a hopeful life;

• Adjust your EXPECTATIONS

• Recognise that YOU have the power to change

things in your life

• Always remind yourself that there is GOODNESS IN

HUMANITY

• Look carefully at the things you are afraid of

• Trust that everything will inevitably change

• Don’t worry too much !

• You are enough – be kind to yourself !

• Surround yourself with POSITIVE PEOPLE

• Do things that inspire kindness in others

• Try to limit social media and the news

• Listen to music

• Do something creative

• SMILE….often

• Move your body … however, just move it!

Above all, always anticipate positive outcomes, acknowledge

that through perseverance good things will come and this

attitude will help you get through uncertainty.

My eleven year old son wrote a poem for

The Children’s Society website in April to inspire other

children and young people, he called it ‘Hope’ his

words have echoed in my mind ever since I read it

and I would like to share it with you – he wrote;

“Hope was lost, hope is found, hope is

everywhere around.

Hope blossoms like on trees, hope flies

around with the bees.

Hope is just around the bend, if you find

hope, you’re sure to mend.

Look for hope where ever you are, look for

hope while in the car.

And with this final verse I say, look for hope

EVERYDAY.“ By Noah Thompson

SCENE SPORTS review

Welcome to the first of our regular Scene's

Sports reviews and looking back at 2020 it

has been the most weird, surreal, sad year that

the sport community have ever had. This time last

year if you had said that most sports would have

been decimated by a virus I would have laughed

at you, unfortunately I'm not laughing now.

Tokyo Olympics 2021

Looking forward to 2021, with all the events that

have been cancelled due to Coronavirus, now

looks to be the most exciting sporting year for a

long time with the highlight of the year, the

Olympics in Tokyo, hopefully bringing us a bit of

normality in this crazy, sureall period in all our

lives.

On Friday 23rd July The Tokyo Olympics are due

to begin and the whole planet will watch the

greatest sporting event on their TV, but

unfortunately I cannot see any people being

encouraged to fly there to watch them! But who

from a British point of view should we be

watching out for to bring those Gold Medals

home to Blighty!

Ed Clancy will be chasing a fourth Gold medal in

Cycling which would put him equal to Sir Ben

Ainslie, Sir Mo Farah and Sir Matthew Pinsent, no

pressure then Ed! And by the way does that

guarantee you a knighthood!

There will be many more British Olympians that

will taste the ultimate prize of Gold Medal Glory!

and personally I can't wait for it to begin!

COVID19 has changed the way we watch and enjoy our

favourite sports, from Football to Cricket, from Rugby to

Horse Racing, From March as you know all sports stopped!

Personally I was one of those people that went to one of the

last sports events that allowed people to watch, the

Cheltenham Festival. If I had known that at the time I would

have taken it all in much more.

Now that we are coming to the end of the year sporting

events are slowly coming back, but unfortunately without the

most important ingredient, the FANS! Watching football

matches at the moment without the atmosphere of the fans

cheering on their favourite teams just isn't the same. Sports

MUST get their supporters back into their Stadia and as

soon as possible.

Adam Peaty will

surely get Gold.

The current 100m

Olympic Breaststroke

Champion, he is also

the current World

record holder in both

50m and 100m

Breaststroke events.

In fact he has broken

the world record an

incredible 11 times,

this man is the Usain

Bolt of Swimming!

Talking of cycling

what of the golden

couple Jason Kenny

& Laura Trott, already

between them they

have currently won

FIVE Olympic Gold

Medals, there is talk

that they want to

increase that to

TEN!! We shall see.

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

The European

Championship 2021

Looking ahead to next year which other sports

shall we look forward to, well Football for one,

The European Championship, postponed from

this year will begin in earnest in June and

hopefully England can finally win a major

tournament since 1966 (How many years of hurt

are we up to now)!!

Also can anyone explain to me how England

actually qualified for this tournament, because

I can't, but heyhoe we are there and at the time

of going to print our Welsh cousins have

qualified and Northern Ireland and Scotland have

a chance to qualify via the play-offs.

Domestically the Premiership again looks like a

two horse race between Liverpool and Man City

and hopefully the fans will be back soon, even if

there are a small percentage of supporters

allowed back that will give us atmosphere again!

Talking of Football, what about the lower

leagues? with no fans allowed into stadiums the

Premier league will be okay as they have got

there TV money to fall back on but in the EFL

(English Football League) they are desperate to

get the fans back as they massively rely on there

"Gate" money, already in the last 12 months two

clubs have gone bust, in. Bury & Macclesfield.

How many more will go under?? Surely the

Premier league has to support these historic

teams.

Tennis

The Tennis Grand slams are

back and congratulations to

Rafael Nadal in winning the

French Open and matching

Roger Federer's 20 Grand

Slam Men's Titles, I'm sure

there will be many more to

come from the Spaniard!

Well the 2020 sporting year is nearly at

an end but let's look forward to 2021

because it will be jam packed with

events to get us on the edge of our

seats and we'll review each momentous

event in The Scene!

Rugby Union

In Rugby Union they still have to finish off this years

six nations before they can look forward to next year's

tournament , so let's see how that turns out but on

the whole these sports are slowly coming back to

some sort of normality.

The Ryder Cup

And what of Golf, like the Olympics and European

Championships, The Ryder Cup has been postponed

from this year and will now take place at Whistling

Straits, Wisconsin in September next year and being at

home the Americans, they will be favourites against the

Europeans, but with "The Postman" Ian Poulter, we will

always have a chance (He always delivers).

Talking of golf one player to look

out for next year will be "One of

our own" Aaron Rai, the

Wolverhampton born,

Wolverhampton Grammar School

ex pupil has just won The Scottish

Open, not one of the Majors, but

it still carried a prize total of

£867,000, not bad for four days

work!!

Car Review

SEAT ATECA

By Sue Cooke

The compact SUV market is a popular

segment when you need a car for all

reasons and all seasons. The SEAT

Ateca which I drove this week was the

perfect companion to take me very

efficiently along narrow tracks and

country lanes and comfortably over speed bumps in town.

This SUV is the ideal match for urban and country life.

For 2020 the Ateca has grown in length due to the new

design of the front and rear bumpers. A new front grille,

bumper and full LED headlamp refreshes the front. Entry to

the impressive 510 litres load space is flanked by full LED

rear lamps with dynamic, sweeping indicators and on the

Black Edition model I drove, twin exhaust pipes. The electric

parking brake which easily flips up or down, includes

Autohold and Hill hold function. On the entry level, there are

front and rear parking sensors. There is even a tiredness

recognition system as standard.

In keeping with authentic Latin flavour, character and

personality, the Ateca derives its name from the Spanish

village of the same name which lies to the west of Zaragoza.

I may live in a less sunny climate, but the new exterior

paintwork of velvet red metallic certainly cheered me up

every morning.

The Ateca has become one of the brand’s more successful

vehicles, selling more than 300,000 units since its

introduction in 2016.

For 2020, the ever-increasing needs of our connected world

are catered for. I was impressed with the range of

connectivity powered by the latest infotainment technology

with Full Link – wireless access to both Android Auto and

Apple’s CarPlay – wireless (compatible) smartphone

charging and online-based functions and services, with incar

apps. Great, if you are a little more confident than I am

with new technology.

The Ateca now integrates some of the most advanced driver

assistance systems available, including Predictive Adaptive

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

Cruise Control, Side and Exit Assist and

Front Assist with Pre-Crash braking. I

would hope that I would never have to

use them, but knowing a car has this

technology gives a feeling of instant

safety.

There is a choice of five petrol or five diesel engines which

have been updated. I was lucky enough to drive the most

powerful petrol option - a 190PS 2.0 TSI which is linked to a

DSG dual-clutch transmission. When navigating on roads I

didn’t know it was great that I didn’t have to think about

changing gear. The 4Drive all-wheel drive system offers a

dynamic off-road driving experience which unfortunately I

didn’t have the chance to experience.

Expected to be the most popular model, the 1.5-litre TSI

150PS SE Technology, costs less than the outgoing model,

now £26,355, as well as benefitting from more technology as

standard, including connected navigation and wireless

charging for smart devices.

Visibility is good all round as there are no small windows front

side, just one large side window with no frames to get in the

way of vision.

Whether you are a city or a country driver, the 2020 SEAT

Ateca offers a spacious, practical and versatile SUV with a

unique style, added advanced technology, safety features

and greater comfort.

Education

Tettenhall College

My invitation to you.

Tettenhall College has a proud and illustrious history. You may

have often driven past our gates, perhaps you have visited our

beautiful campus, and you may even have enjoyed your own

school days here, being an Old Tettenhallian.

We celebrate our history; we cherish all that has come before.

Yet the focus of today is our pupils, from our youngest learners

starting their educational journey in our nursery from the age

of 2, to our Senior School pupils, preparing to follow in the

footsteps of this year’s A level cohort who are now starting their

degree courses at some of the finest universities in the UK.

Tettenhall College today is a school that is firmly focused on

preparing our wonderful young people for the world that they

will form. The challenges the world presents are many and

varied. It is our responsibility as a place of learning and growth,

to ensure that all Tettenhall College pupils are prepared in the

very best, fundamental ways, to meet these. Academically,

culturally, personally and spiritually. The Tettenhall College that

I am proud to lead is today a school that place the pursuit of

excellence in all that we do, at the very heart of our mission.

Of course, as all independent schools should, we offer small,

personal and tailored academic classes, delivered by

outstanding teachers. We have wonderful facilities and a school

site that is extremely conducive to learning. Our academic and

co-curricular programme stretches young minds and presents

opportunities to explore and strive through music, sport,

technology and much more. Pupils’ pastoral care is first-rate and

our boarding community fosters the most superb, cosmopolitan

group of young people whose contribution to our school

cannot be simply measured. You should expect all of this as a

minimum if you are considering independent education.

So, my invitation to you, is to consider visiting us here at

Tettenhall College to learn more about what we offer our young

learners today. Whilst the restrictions imposed upon us by

Covid-19 mean that we have adapted our approach to tours and

open events, we are safely and effectively welcoming visitors.

In particular, I would love to meet you to explain the new

‘Pathways’ Programme that will be offered to our Year 11 and

Sixth Form pupils. I will tell you about our academic offering and

how our Scholarships are designed to secure the very highest

outcomes. I will also be happy to talk to you about the Tettenhall

Bursary Scheme which strives to make this very special

education available to as many young learners as possible.

Yet most importantly, I look forward to listening and learning as

you explain what you are looking to secure for your family. The

pursuit of excellence in all that we do is not a strapline or a

motto. It is a conviction that by learning about every young

person as an individual, whose talents will be many and varied,

we can help them become the very best versions of themselves,

whatever this may be.

Relationships are built on communication. Please accept my

invitation to come and meet with us, so we might start a

conversation and perhaps take the very first steps on the most

important journey your child might take.

Mr Christopher McAllister

SKODA SUPERB IV HYBRID HATCH

By Sue Cooke

Heavy rain and wintry conditions are my

usual excuse for sitting in front of a cosy

fire. But this week the Skoda Superb I

am road testing is too enticing. The

updated hatchback is superbly

comfortable and superbly quiet. So why

would I want to be anywhere else than

behind the three spoke multifunction,

heated steering wheel, in the heated

driving seat. I actually felt sad when the

man came to collect this Skoda, an

emotion I only display when I’ve been

driving an expensive super car!

But the Superb and I formed firm bonds.

This is Skoda’s first electrified model, the

plug in hybrid (PHEV) iV. Powered by a

1.4 litre petrol engine and an 85kw

electric motor. The cabin is so quiet that

without looking at the information on the

dash, I found it difficult to work out if I was in all electric mode

or combustion engine mode.

On long runs, power is a voiceless note. There is however

an E-noise generator for the electric drive where noise can

be emitted up to a speed of 30mph. So avoiding startled

shoppers who cross the road with their ears, not their eyes.

Exterior design updates include new front and rear bumpers

and I adored the anthracite alloy wheel trims on the top of

the range Laurin & Klement trim. Lighting animations are

very entertaining and as I opened the driver’s door, LED

spotlights projected a halo around the word Skoda onto the

ground.

Style, elegance and sophistication continue in the quality

interior where there are new chrome highlights. Ambient

lighting illuminates the storage compartments below the

armrests as well as the spacious front and rear footwells. I

sank into the full leather seats and accelerated silkily and

smoothly forward. I could have driven forever in this cocoon

of luxury and tranquillity.

The five seater has an advanced range of technology,

including safety and convenience systems which would

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

traditionally appear in much more

expensive cars.

In the murky daylight, precise steering

and cornering fog lights highlighted the

curving tarmac as the large hatchback

effortlessly eats up the miles. And they

are definitely value for money miles

when this hybrid power will achieve

weighted combined mpg of 201.8-148.7.

There are many innovative features, but

I would suggest that in the monsoon like

weather, the most useful was the Skoda

umbrella in its water resistant storage

space. There are two umbrella

compartments in the driver and front

passenger doors. Park assist will park

the car in parallel or bay spaces and the

full colour rear camera makes for easy

reversing.

The automatic soft close tailgate encompasses a boot which

is the largest in its class at 625 litres and can be opened with

a kicking motion under the rear bumper. Increasing to 1,760

litres with seats down, it is so capacious that an 8-year-old I

borrowed, quite happily lay down full length in it, from front

to back! I promise I didn’t shut her in it!

Buy this gorgeous Superb and you will join the numerous JD

Power customers who named ŠKODA as the UK’s most

dependable brand and I have to say a brand which produces

some of the most enticing models.

Brewood CE Middle Academy are delighted

to have their pupils back into school...

Mr J Smith as Acting

Executive Principal

On Thursday 3rd September,

Brewood CE Middle

Academy opened up again

for all its pupils following the

national pandemic. Interim

Executive Principal, Jon

Smith explained that “it has

been a long wait for pupils,

staff and parents but we are

delighted to have our pupils

back into school and we are

all ready for a positive and

successful year ahead”.

The mission at Brewood has

always been to educate the

pupils within a safe, happy,

caring Christian environment, where all are valued

and encouraged to fulfil their potential in all aspects

of school life. The school motto of ‘Be the Best you

can Be’ exemplifies what the school expects of pupils

and adults alike. This is underpinned by the school’s

belief that all pupils should ‘live life in all its fullness’ –

John 10:10

In April 2018 our OFSTED Inspection judged the

school as ‘Good’ for overall effectiveness with

‘Personal development, behaviour and welfare’

judged as ‘Outstanding’.

British Values are embedded in the life of the school

and are actively promoted through spiritual, moral,

social and cultural education forming a part of the

school’s distinctive Christian character.

The school were delighted to join the St Chad’s Multi-

Academy Trust in 1 October 2019 and the many new

opportunities for the school, staff and pupils,

enabling them to raise standards further.

The strong pastoral care system within the school

helps them to develop pupils as confident individuals

who have self-discipline, respect for others and a

caring attitude towards the community in which they

live. Pupils are given opportunities to develop

leadership and life skills and are strongly encouraged

to take part in extra-curricular activities which

develop their full potential. At Brewood CE Middle

Academy, all stakeholders want all pupils to engage

in learning in a safe and welcoming environment.

Pupils at Brewood can choose from a wide range of

musical instrument lessons led by experienced

peripatetic teachers work in the school’s ‘Major Minor’

Music School. There is a thriving choir at school which

performs both in school and also at community

events.

A ‘virtual tour of the school’ can be found in the

‘Transition the Brewood 2020’ section of the school

website whilst a “Presentation to New Parents – June

2020” will also provide prospective parents with a

Family crafts

and fun this

Christmas.

The kids are excited and on Christmas break, so you might feel that you have a lot of pressure on your hands to keep them entertained

over the holidays.

There are so many fun, small and cheap activities that you can all get involved in over Christmas which will lift everyone’s

spirits and for you to spend some fun quality time together.

From cooking to craft making, read below to find our top activities to do with the kids over the holidays:

Bauble making and decorations for the tree

Putting up the tree is an activity that children love to do. It is the start of the Christmas fever by

putting up the festive décor around your house. By adding their own creative touch to the tree,

this will make the activity that little bit extra special. You can purchase some clear baubles and

fill them with anything of your choice, from confetti to sequins, or even colourful sweets!

A Christmas scavenger hunt - Hide some clues around the house and get the kids searching for their mystery

prize, which could be something as small as an advent calendar or a selection box of chocolates.

The best part of the activity will be the fun experience of the children searching around to find the clues

to see what Santa and his reindeers have hidden.

Make a Christmas Wreath - Some outdoors fun! Take the kids outside to gather some

branches, pine cones and leaves for you to make a festive wreath out of. Simply attach these to a wire

ring and decorate it with a pretty bow. The kids will love the fact that they created it from using nature

that they found!

Donate cards and presents to the less fortunate - Christmas magic is all being around your

loved ones, which is such a special thing, and it will be important to make sure that this is understood by your family. By

writing a special crafty card to someone in the special forces, or donating a present to local charities, it will be doing a great

deed and reinforcing the special meaning of Christmas.

Make some paper snowflakes - Make your home look delightful and icy with these homemade decorations to

hang around the house. All you need is some paper and scissors to make such an easy activity for all to enjoy. Starting simply

with a square piece of paper, you fold it diagonally in half, and then again down the middle to create a smaller triangle. Then

you have to fold it into three equal sections from the left to the right. You will be left with an arrow like shape, which you then

need to cut along the horizontal edge. You can then get creative and cut out random shapes at the edges, so that when you

carefully unfold the paper, it will reveal your very own customised snowflake.

Popsicle stick Christmas craft - Who would’ve thought you

could make so many craft activities out of popsicle sticks. From Santa, a

Snowman to a Christmas tree, it seems that you can make literally anything

Christmas related from this easy to find tool.

Write a letter to Santa - Letters to Santa really create the

Christmas magic in your home. These can be as crafty as the children want them

to be with colours and stickers to catch Santa’s eye.

Wealth is

Wealth is more than increasing the value of your

investments, it is about preserving and protecting it.

There is no point in building up a portfolio of

investments if tax planning has not been incorporated

into the financial advice. You do not want to see your

investments reduce by taxation or your children pay

inheritance tax on your estate when you die.

The value of investing with AJ Wealth Management is

directly linked to not only investment performance but

also tax, wealth preservation and long term care

planning.

AJ Wealth Management can also assist you with

changing your property to Tenants in Common in

order to protect your assets in the event of you

needing social care in the future.

Similarly, we are able to set up a Lasting Power of

Attorney for Health & Care and Financial Decisions.

This will allow you to nominate trusted individuals,

such as your spouse or children, to make important

decisions on your behalf at a time when you may not

be able to make decisions for yourself.

We always recommend our clients have a valid Will

as if there is no Will in place the rules of intestacy will

come into force and your estate may not be left to the

people you wish to inherit your assets.

The rules of intestacy are:

A surviving spouse/civil partner keeps all

assets including property up to £270,000 and

all personal possessions.

Spouse/civil partner gets absolute interest in

half of the remainder of the estate.

The other half is divided equally between

blood children and adopted children.

Stepchildren are not included.

If property is worth more £270,000 then the

children can force a sale of property.

If there are no children, surviving spouse/civil

partner receives 100% of estate.

WINTER DRIVING

Road Safety - Things to remember as

nights get darker & the weather changes..

Driving in the dark and in

difficult weather conditions

can make driving so much

more dangerous in the Winter

period. We understand that

you have places to go and

people to see, especially over

the Festive period but it is so

important to make sure that

yours and those in the car

safety is a priority.

1. You must make sure that you are in an energised state

whilst driving at all times regardless, but this is definitely

more important in the night and dark, when you

may be feeling more tired. As well as lights shining in

our eyes, you also tend to feel worn down and tired

later on, so you must make sure that you are in a state

to drive safely as soon as you get behind the wheel. As

well as this, it is important to remember that just because

it is the period of celebration and

festivities, driving under the influence of drink or

drugs is life threatening as well as being illegal.

2. Checking our car is even more important over the Winter period as these weather conditions can worsen the

condition of many cars, especially with unexpected weather. Make sure that your car battery and fluids

are all full, and your tyres are in good shape will benefit you during the colder months.

3. Organisation is key for driving during the Winter period. Please do ensure that before you drive that you

have planned your journey in advance and bring along any essentials for the worst scenario. This includes:

A first aid kit, a charger, a quilt, a torch and a map for any circumstances that you may (hopefully won’t)

run into.

4. Any unexpected weather conditions must be reflected as soon as they occur when you drive, including darker

nights or fog and adjusting your lights to reflect this so that other drivers can see you. Any ice or snow

must be cleared from your car before you start your journey, as well as judging your speed in these conditions.

Allowing space in between the cars in front will reduce the risk of accidents as well as being more

aware of your surroundings.

Paws

for thought Pet Page...

Please follow our Facebook pet page

@SocialSceneDogs and share photos of your

own furry friends - See you soon!

Christmas isn’t too far off, and experienced pet owners know that this

means a house full of potential pet hazards. Covid19 has seen an

increase in dog owners, so if this is your first Christmas with your

dog, don’t panic because we’ve got essential dog Christmas safety tips

to help you make it through.

The Festive season is such a busy time, and pet parents need to be

especially diligent. There are many Christmas dangers for dogs that

are specific to this time of year. As we're preparing to decorate our

homes, cook our Christmas feasts and travel to visit family and

friends(hopefully), we need to be wary of the dangers that may be

facing our beloved canines.

The TREE

DON’T USE HOLLY,

POINSETTIA OR MISTLETOE

These are all poisonous to your dog if

ingested. It’s safest to stick with

artificial plants instead!

DON’T DECORATE WITH EDIBLE

DECORATIONS

Don’t decorate with edible decorations

even if you’re placing them out of reach.

Edible decorations like Chocolate and

candy sticks etc. can encourage dogs to

jump and climb to get tasty snacks. Plus,

if these decorations are threaded, the

thread can cause internal complications

when ingested and cause stomach upset

in dogs.

KEEP WRAPPED GIFTS AND

WRAPPING PAPER OUT OF REACH

Wrapping paper can attract dogs and

when eaten it can cause blockages,

stomach upset, or even poisoning

depending on the paper composition.

ANCHOR YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE

Anchor your Christmas tree securely so

it doesn’t fall on your pup while they are

playing or running around the house.

GET A FAUX TREE

An artificial Christmas tree is healthier

for your dog, because it doesn’t drop

sharp needles that can be ingested. Real

trees can also harbour pests,

parasites and mites. If you have to have

a real tree, make sure that you regularly

clean up all stray needles from the floor

and treat it for pests before bringing it

indoors.

KEEP WIRING AND EXTENSION

CORDS OUT OF REACH

Playing pups can get tangled in wiring,

but younger pets can also bite into wires

or pull items off shelves causing shock

electrocution, crushing, or even death.

This isn't just one of the best dog

Christmas safety tips, it could save your

pet's life

DON’T OVERWHELM YOUR DOG

WITH FESTIVE DECORATIONS

Dogs are creatures of habit and too

many decorations at once or too many

loud and obnoxious decorations can put

your dog on edge. If you like to have

many decorations in your home,

introduce them a little at a time.

Woofwoof!

Food

KEEP CHOCOLATE OUT OF REACH

Chocolate is a popular stocking stuffer or

gift over the holidays, but make sure to

keep it out of reach of your pet at all

times! Chocolate contains theobromine,

which can cause organ damage or failure.

KEEP ALCOHOLIC DRINKS

OUT OF REACH

Alcohol and pets don’t mix, so keep all

alcoholic drinks out of reach of your pets

ALWAYS. This isn't just one of the best

dog Christmas safety tips, it's a tip that

you need to follow year round!

In minimum quantities, alcohol can cause

vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and

labored breathing. In significant

quantities, alcohol can cause death.

DON’T GIVE TABLE SCRAPS

A lot of the foods we eat at Christmas

time are high in fat and can cause a

condition called pancreatitis in pets,

according to veterinarians. Pancreatitis is

extremely uncomfortable and can be

dangerous to your pet’s health. You

should also skip those table scraps to

avoid packing unhealthy weight on

your dog!

KNOW WHAT MAKES

FOR A SAFE MEAL

If you enjoy making your dog a part of

the Christmas meal just make sure that

you feed them safe food – white meat

without skin, dog-safe veggies, and plain

rice is a great place to start.

DON’T GIVE YOUR DOG BONES

Cooked bones are easily splintered and

can cause dental damage and internal

perforations or blockages. Never give

your dog any household bones, stick with

raw lamb marrow bones instead.

Gifts!

CHOOSE EDIBLE GIFTS WISELY

When choosing treats and edible gifts for your

dog know what you are buying. Buy treats that

are made in reputable countries with healthy

ingredients from companies that have not had

recent recalls.

KNOW YOUR DOG’S HABITS

WHEN BUYING TOYS

When you choose toys for your dog know their

playing habits. For example, if you have a

heavy chewer, don’t choose a toy that they will

tear apart and possibly swallow pieces of.

STICK WITH TOYS MADE FOR DOGS

It can be tempting to buy kids toys for your

dog, but one of the most important dog

Christmas safety tips is to stick with toys that

are made for dogs. Human toys can contain

substances that are toxic to dogs, not

designed for chewing or have pieces that can

be pulled off and swallowed easily.

CHOOSE SIZE APPROPRIATE TOYS

Make sure that the toys you pick up for your

dog are appropriate for their size to avoid

choking or dental damage due to toys that are

too small or too large.

KEEP AN EYE ON DOGS INTERACTING

WITH OTHER PETS

If you have multiple dogs be wary when giving

gifts or special treats. Even dogs that love

each other dearly can become territorial or

aggressive over “special” items. It’s best to

give both dogs the same items or to separate

dogs when giving them items over the Festive

period.

KEEP OLDER PETS COMFORTABLE

A dog that was very sociable in their youth

isn’t always as sociable in their senior years.

Older dogs are easily bothered, easily

startled, easily overwhelmed, and sometimes

experiencing pain; these things can contribute

to snapping or uneasiness. If you have an

older dog, isolate them to a safe and calm

area of the home during your gathering.

Christmas Gatherings

IF YOUR DOG IS ROAMING AROUND THE HOUSE

Be sure that everyone at your gathering is aware that your dog is roaming

the house, so they know not to leave outside doors open. One of the

easiest dog Christmas safety tips to follow. All you have to do is chat with

your guest, which you're going to be doing anyway!

IF PEOPLE WILL BE DRINKING HEAVILY, ISOLATE YOUR DOG

Be sure that everyone at your gathering is aware that your dog is roaming

the house, so they know not to leave outside doors open. One of the

easiest dog Christmas safety tips to follow. All you have to do is chat with

your guest, which you're going to be doing anyway!

KNOW WHEN TO KEEP YOUR DOG ISOLATED

If you are holding a gathering and your dog is afraid of strangers, has

shown any signs of aggression in the past, is new to your home or does not

do well with groups of people, keep your dog in an isolated room of the

house. Make sure partygoers know not to go into this room.

DON’T SERVE DANGEROUS PARTY SNACKS

Undoubtedly someone will try to sneak a snack to your dog during the

party. Keep your dog safe by making sure that all snacks served don’t

contain toxic-to-dog ingredients.

IF OTHER DOGS WILL BE PRESENT INTRODUCE THEM

OUTDOORS FIRST

If other dogs will be at your gathering and your dog is not familiar with

them, have them both meet outside first. Dogs can be territorial over their

homes and their people, meeting on neutral territory first helps with a

neutral introduction.

MONITOR ENTRANCES IN POOR WEATHER

If there is snow or ice outside know that ice melting chemicals and salt can

be tracked into the house on guest’s shoes. These chemicals are toxic to

your dog if they are licked so have guests take off shoes to keep floors

chemical free.

BE WARY OF CHILDREN

If there will be children at your gathering, make sure that they are familiar

with dogs and how to interact with them. Also, know how your dog

interacts with children. If your dog has never met children before or the

child has never interacted with dogs before, a party is not the best time for

a first meeting. If this is the case isolate your dog because gatherings are

overstimulating, and children are easily left to their own devices.

KEEP TO YOUR NORMAL SCHEDULE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE

This is one of the most important dog Christmas safety tips. Dogs thrive on

schedule, so it’s important to maintain their regular feeding, walking, and

sleeping schedule even during holiday gatherings. Deviation from schedule

can cause changes in appetite, depression, anxiety, changes in bathroom

habits, or health changes.

CHRISTMAS

T R E N D S

Decorate your home this festive season with

our chic decorating ideas and inspiration.

DIY CHRISTMAS!

Make a fun afternoon project and decorate an

old glass or spray some sparkly snow and

decorate some old jars.

Skip that fabric table

runner in favor of

something that adds

a bit more color and

texture to your table -

white garland with

string lights and

colorful ornaments.

Create your own unique

welcome sign

Place your design onto a piece of stained wood and

hang it in your porch or entry. For something even

easier, simply slip the sign into an existing frame for

the season.

Bring Natural

Elements Indoors

Things you can find in your

very own garden, like

pinecones. Add a little

glitz, a bit of glitter or snow

spray, it never fails.

Hang Greens

Around Your Door

Greet guests (and yourself!)

with a little christmas cheer.

Pots of greenery and warm

lights are really all you need!

Go for a

Minimal

Vibe

You don't have to

go all out with the

glitter and lights to

create a warm

display. Less is

more and can look

just as striking.

Young family love their Bovis Homes

new-build so much they document

whole buying journey online

Second-stepper Emma Lissmore

immediately fell in love with her

new-build home at The Steadings

location in Essington. Here, she

describes why it’s perfect for her

family…

Emma, mum to young son, Oliver, ‘still pinches herself’ that

the family's Bovis Homes property is theirs. She has

documented the whole journey – from reservation to

moving in – on Instagram - aspenhouseex.

Why did you choose a Bovis Homes ‘Spruce’ house

type?

We initially wanted a Bovis Homes detached Cypress house

type as we thought the Spruce was a four-bedroom home.

We viewed the Spruce show home, fell in love and the rest

is history.

Is this the first home you have bought?

This is our second home; our first home has now become a

rental as a new venture for us.

Why did you choose a new-build home?

I just fell in love with the idea of buying a new-build home

that fits and meets all of our needs as a family. This home is

what we’ve dreamt of!

Why did you choose The Steadings in Essington?

funnily enough we only visited Essington to view the

development as we had never heard of Bovis Homes and

were originally interested in the housebuilder’s Fletchers

Rise location in Wombourne. We visited the development

several times and the more we saw it and the show home,

the more it felt right and felt like it could be home. Not to

mention the lovely countryside and amazing school on the

doorstep.

Why did you document your journey about the

buying process?

I chose to document our new-build journey as there is a lot

of negative stigma around new-builds. Our journey from

start to finish has been amazing and we’ve really built a

great relationship with the site and sales teams! That was

the only sad part of the process: finishing it!

What kind of questions did you have about buying

a new-build home?

I remember the first day we went into the sales office armed

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

with a list of questions, from the estate charges to the land

the houses are built on! Also, the leasehold of the house

and, more generally, the plots that would be available. The

sales advisor answered my very long list of questions and

that day we walked out of the sales office, we knew buying

with Bovis Homes was the right move.

What was the best part of the build process?

This is a hard question as the whole process has been my

favourite part. If I had to narrow it down, it would be the

first time we visited our plot and realised this would be our

home soon.

How often did you visit your new home during the

build process?

We visited our plot a few times during the build process

as I wanted to document the progress. When we couldn’t

get to the plot, we had updates from sales and site guys,

which was amazing, so we didn’t miss a single stage! It was

magical visiting our plot each time, watching it change and

grow into the beautiful home it is today.

How long was it from choosing your home to your

moving in date?

We reserved our home on 9th December last year. Our

completion date was June 2020, but with the Coronavirus

lockdown, it was ready by 31st July.

How did you choose the design theme and colours

in your new home?

The design and colours came from a lot of ideas on social

media platform Pinterest, plus homes I follow on

Instagram. I created mood boards for each room to help

me envisage what it would look like together.

What does your son, Oliver, think of his new

home?

Oliver absolutely loves the garden and his new big-boy

bedroom! We’ve started to accessorise his room with a

Disney theme – he loves cars and Toy Story.

Name five things in your new home that excite you

and why?

- Smart home features

- Kitchen design options

- Bedroom decor

- The projects we’ve got planned for the garden

- The amazing positioning of the house – it looks

incredible

Can you give three points of advice to anyone

looking to buy a new home?

- Ensure the garden is in a good position for the sun

- Upgrades are upgrades for a reason and they’re totally

worth it if you can afford it

- Do your research on the area and drive up and look

around, don’t be afraid to ask questions and be a bit

cheeky

How important was the open green space on the

development, in your purchasing decision?

To be honest, the green space wasn’t a deal breaker for us.

We love it as there is plenty of space for lovely walks with

our son and dog, but it wasn’t something that was essential

on our list – it was a nice added extra for us.

What is the most important room in your new

home and why?

The most important room to us is the kitchen. So many

memories will be made here, especially at Christmas time

with all the family round and we cannot wait.

Finally, what’s your favourite thing about your

new home?

My favourite thing is the whole house. It’s absolutely

stunning and we’re so looking forward to showing it off to

all our family and friends.

What was the best part of this whole journey that

you will remember in years to come?

My favourite memory will always be that first time we

walked into the sales office – just to have a look – and

walked out having reserved our forever dream home! I still

look at the house now and have to pinch myself that it’s

ours!

What was the least likeable part of the journey

that you would rather forget?

I don’t really have a least likeable part but, if I had to say

one, it would be the delays caused by Coronavirus and the

uncertainty. But this is not something Bovis Homes could

control and they soon pulled it back out of the bag.

Summing up your experience, how do you feel

about buying a new-build home?

I feel amazing about buying our new-build home. There

have been a few snags here and there, but nothing

unusual. All have been, or are being, rectified by the

amazing assistant site manager, Pete.
