Real life thrillers and in-your-dream chick lit
and great wine. Swoon
The Family Holiday by Elizabeth Noble is just the most delightful book we’ve
read in ages. It’s light and easy, with lovely characters you long to be your newbest-friends.
Teenage angst, family tragedies, new wives and single dads and a
holiday in an gorgeous luxury retreat in the country ... a warm, witty and really
wonderful weekend read. • Equally as light and enjoyable is Sophie Kinsella’s
irresistible new novel about falling in love with someone - but not necessarily
with their life. A writing retreat in Italy and a holiday romance sounds lovely.
But back home - with his eccentric, naked-sauna-loving family and her terribly
behaved, shirt-shredding dog - things don’t look as rosy. We love a good chick lit
read, and Love Your Life is really fun.
There is so much to love about Groote Post Seasalter wine ... the elegance and purity
of fruit, the vibrant acidity, the oyster shell minerality and saline finish, typical of Sauvignons
from the maritime cool-climate Darling Hills terroir. Even the name captured the essence of
the wine. Seasalter 2020 has just been released ... and it’s a summer beach escape in a bottle.
Think grapefruit and zesty lime with hints of fynbos, sea-breeze and a touch of oak. Serve it with
seafood, of course. Around R150 from wine merchants or groote-post-wines.myshopify.com
Pretty
Alida
therapeutic
Change and growth in the beauty industry have been
remarkable through the years. When Alida Fourie entered
the industry, beauty treatments were seen as a luxury, with
only a select few going for regular treatments. Over the
years, various treatments have become more specialised
and people have become more aware of what the industry
has to offer. People are generally living, working and staying
active much longer, therefore the need for products and
treatments that slow down the process of skin ageing is
constantly increasing.
Alida’s interest in beauty started when she was nine years old,
and like many small girls, she was interested in modelling.
Her parents enrolled her in modelling classes to encourage
her and to build her self-confidence since she was a shy
child. This triggered her interest in the beauty industry,
but it wasn’t until high school that she realised this would
be the career path that she would follow. The meaningful
and rewarding results within the beauty industry caught
her eye. “By applying one’s knowledge, one can create a
positive impact on how a person looks and feels, and then
it is also the diversity of the industry.” To her it is much more
comprehensive than people think. It is more than only
makeup and nails. The pathways of this career are limitless.
Alida was born and raised in Pretoria. She moved to
Bloemfontein at the end of her matric year and planned to
return to Pretoria after her studies. “Although I only knew my
sister when arriving in Bloemfontein, I felt right at home and
decided this is where I wanted to stay.”
Alida completed her B.Tech Somatology degree at the
Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein (CUT).
Later on, she also studied a B.Com Financial Management
through UNISA. While completing her B.Tech year, she
started working as a laboratory assistant at the CUT. She then
became a part- time lecturer at a private health and beauty
college as well as a part-time laser therapist. “After a year of
teaching part time, I knew my passion lay in education and I
started my career as a full-time lecturer,” she shares.
Alida has always had an interest in specialised treatments, for
example microneedling, chemical peels, microdermabrasion,
etc. “This part of the industry is constantly evolving and one
needs to keep on learning to stay up to date with the new
techniques and technology.
“I am also passionate about the different massage
techniques and the benefits that go with these treatments.”
Fourie is
definitely not just
a pretty face. She
daily lives out her
passion, paving
the way for the
next generation of
beauty therapists.
Currently Alida is the franchisee and principal of Beauty
Therapy Institute Bloemfontein. Beauty Therapy Institute
started in 1996 and currently has 13 branches nationally and
internationally. They are internationally recognised colleges
within the beauty industry. “We pride ourselves on offering
flexible, part-time modular training courses in Health, Beauty
and Skincare Therapy.”
According to Alida the beauty industry will continue to grow
rapidly in the future as it’s not only a versatile industry but
easily adapts to new trends and demands. Beauty bloggers
add value to the industry by creating awareness among
the general public. Most beauty bloggers are either subject
experts or people seeking advice from a subject expert.
“Always do your research before trying out a new beauty
trend,” warns Alida, emphasising that one should never DIY
high level treatments on your skin such as microneedling,
microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Specialised
treatment products and equipment can now be purchased
online by anyone. These types of treatments can be
detrimental to one’s skin if not done correctly. The go-to
skincare product Alida can’t live without would be her
exfoliator, the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. “Whenever my
skin appears tired and dull, I use this to instantly brighten and
smooth the skin, leaving it rejuvenated.”
As a mother of three, the key to balancing work and family
life is routine. “When there are set daily routines, it is almost
as if things happen automatically. Routine gives children a
sense of stability and security and they are less likely to forget
things. Obviously, some days there are a few deviations but
even then, we still try to stay with our routine,” adding that
skin care and protection should always be part of a child’s
selfcare framework. “Most of our skin damage happens
during our childhood years. It is important to teach children
about sun protection as part of their normal daily routine.
When a child’s body shows signs of puberty changes, it is
good to introduce your child to a good skincare routine. Stay
with mild dermatologically tested products such as Cetaphil.
These changes can start as early as nine years old.”
Alida has great plans for the future. “Since the beauty industry
is constantly evolving, we need to stay up to date with new
developments and technology. Expanding our scope of
training is essential. We would like to expand our college in
order to accommodate more students. Opening up more
branches in the Free State and Northern Cape forms part of
our future goal.”
VALUE
Professional makeup
is keeping her eye on
the ball and making
industry. As wife,
owner she still finds
how she does it.
Born in Qwaqwa, the skillful makeup artist, hair stylist and
nail technician has been residing in the City of Roses since
the age of two. For Thato, it’s much more than just putting
on makeup; it is about feeling good, looking good and
having the confidence boost that comes with it. “Doing
makeup is one of the things that boosts my confidence and
makes me feel good about myself. Since I love seeing other
women happy and feeling confident about themselves, I
thought to myself, how about doing this professionally and
seeing where it takes me.”
Thato is currently working for one of the biggest make-up
brands in the world and has also recently spread her wings
to start her own business in the city. Her business, Crest
Beauty Boutique, offers makeup services for various types of
occasions, from hair purchasing, hair installation, hair styling,
washing and treatment.
Starting her own business is the definition of a dream
come true, shares Thato. She opened her business in 2016
after having her first child and needing a second income.
“It was not easy and people around me doubted me as I
was a performer (dancer) before having my babies. I had
no knowledge of the beauty industry but all I knew, is that
I loved it and was willing to start from scratch and learn all
the way. So fours year later, here I am, not where I want to be
yet, but on my way to turn my wildest dreams into reality.’’
Her secret to keeping all the balls in the air is having found
the perfect balance between being a businesswoman,
mom and wife and still making time for herself. “This
is a question I get a lot. I don’t even know how I do it
sometimes, I just do it. I honestly try to balance everything,
respecting that things need to be done, and no matter how
tired I am, I do not stop until I am done. I respect the time
I have to spend with my children, the time I have to share
with my husband and the time I have to do my work – I can
never mix them all at the same time.”
Apart from perfecting her craft, Thato is known for always
being makeup ready and in an interview with Get It,
expresses that her secret is to get up super early as her
makeup can sometimes take her up to two and a half hours
to complete. This while getting ready for work, preparing
lunch for her husband and children and making breakfast
as well.
For the makeup lovers, Thato advises that you should always
invest in good quality primer, setting spray and good quality
foundation. But before investing in expensive makeup
products, make sure your skin is taken care of. According to
her, skin care is very important and the end result of wearing
makeup depends on how your skin looks.
With summer at our doorsteps it is always a good idea to
go for a colourful and fun makeup look. Thato advises that
you should work with what you have. “Depending on your
undertone and skin complexion, I’d say cooler colours for
cool undertones and warm colours for warm undertones
but it also depends on your hair colour and the colour of
the clothes you wear.”
Another part of Thato would have loved to be in the
entertainment industry as she is a performer at heart and
loves the world of creatives. The 28-year-old has been in the
beauty industry for four years now and has worked with a
list of A-listers. Follow her on Instagram and Facebook at
Crest Beauty Boutique for more.
Mooi in ‘n
‘OOGWINK’
Die skeppende oog agter
die mooiste wenkbroue
in die stad, Jeakita Holder,
is in Kaapstad gebore,
maar is reeds ‘n gesoute
Vrystater van 15-jarige
ouderdom af.
ir solank Jeakita Holder kan
onthou, doen sy hare en
grimering vir haar vriende vir
danse of spesiale geleenthede.
Van daar af het dit stadig ontwikkel
totdat sy hul hare en grimering
gedoen het vir hul troues. Die
volgende stap was natuurlik om ‘n
gekwalifiseerde grimeerkunstenaar
te word – en dit is dan ook wat sy
gedoen het. Jeakita het ‘n basiese kursus
geloop in wenkbrouvorming en wenkbrou-threading, ‘n
tradisionele behandeling waar ‘n haartangetjie gebruik
Cherryink-skoonheidsgroep. Dis hier waar my loopbaan
in permanente grimering begin het.”
Jeakita se eerste kwalifikasie as grimeerkunstenaar het
internasionale meesters soos Mariana Freitas, Sviatoslav
skoonheid. “Dit is soos wanneer ‘n kunstenaar beter word
hoe meer hy skilder en elke skildery beter uitdraai as die
vorige.” Vir haar is die uitdagings van ‘n perfekte tegniek
dit wat haar daagliks inspireer – om vir ure te sit en dan
suksesvol te wees, besorg haar groot vreugde. “Ek is mal
oor die transformasie en die resultaat. Wenkbroue is so
“Daar is ‘n sekere manier hoe ‘n
wenkbrou moet of nié moet lyk nie. Wenkbroue moet
altyd so natuurlik moontlik lyk.
gewoonlik baie goed. Sy het reeds
drie internasionale kompetisies
gewen. “Die grootste uitdaging vir
enige iemand in hierdie bedryf is dat
daar so baie skoonheidsterapeute en
permanentegrimering-kunstenaars is. Dis
bly haar eerste prioriteit.
MAZARS
A brand-new day is dawning for Mazars Bloemfontein. Not only is this local branch part of an
international rebranding campaign which sees them sporting a fresh new look and logo, but they
have also moved into their new ultra-modern offices at 101 Olympus Road, Wild Olive Estate, in the
North of Bloemfontein.

Mazars is an international audit firm with
offices in 92 countries across the globe.
They are boasting a total of 11 branches
in South Africa alone with over 1100 staff
members.
According to Thinus de Vries, one of five
partners at Mazars Bloemfontein and
Head of Audit at Mazars Central, this is
a very exciting time for their company,
which is considered to be an integral
player in auditing, accounting, tax and
advisory services in South Africa.
“The whole renewal process is partly to
emphasise the fact that Mazars is one of
the most progressive businesses in the
financial services sector. We have always
moved with the times and we keep on
rediscovering ourselves. We hardly ever
stagnate,” says De Vries.
He adds that a big part of the renewal
strategy has also been done with their
clients in mind, especially when it comes
With over 18 years’ experience in the security industry, the seven
times Best of Bloemfontein Award-winning Armed Response and
Guarding group, Bloemsec, recently introduced their most costeffective
and state-of-the-art artificial intelligence, Bloem Eye.
This enables you to enjoy the benefits of utilising affordable
analytics to complement the guards on your site while also
staying compatible with all major CCTV brands. The professional
security service has once again bagged the Best of Bloemfontein
Award. Bloemsec is also the winner of the BESTof2020 Voters’
Favourite special category sponsored by FNB. Managing Director,
Vernon van der Westhuizen, said this award makes them proud as
it shows they are reaching their goals to be the best local security
company in the city.
When driving around the city, you might have noticed cameras
popping up on street corners. This is all part of Bloemsec’s
strategy to keep an eye out for intruders. The utilisation of
artificial intelligence technology enables them to not only pick
up unusual behaviour from someone peeking over your fence,
but also of vehicles entering your premises. The Bloem Eye, which
is a virtual guarding service, was introduced by the company as
a first-of-its-kind that is a non-sleeping, all-weather and 24/7-
guarding system for your property, business and farm. The Bloem
Eye saves you thousands on your guarding bill and gives you the
option to upgrade your current CCTV system with analytical
software. This is the most cost- effective way of guarding your
premises. Save up to 70% on your guarding bill and receive
state-of-the-art security with virtual control room monitoring,
which includes human behaviour modelling such as loitering.
Deeper insights include facial recognition and tracking.
Bloemsec believes in building bonds with their clients and has
gone the extra mile to make each neighbourhood feel extra
safe. Their dedicated armed reaction team is stationed at the
same officers, allowing them to become familiar with you,
your community and even your pets. When you feel unsafe,
Bloemsec offers you a “meet and greet” where you can request
an officer via the control room in your area to meet you at the
entrance of your residence to ensure that you enter your home
safely.
Their dedicated control centre team monitors their WhatsApp
crime group for each area of the city in order for any
community member to notify others of any strange activity
happening in their area. Bloemsec will then dispatch an
officer on duty to go and investigate. The Armed Response
and Guarding group also offers you 24-hour access to view
cameras on your phone and also provides you with video
footage of an incident at your request.
WHO, WHAT,
WEAR?
Do you spend most of your time standing in
front of your closet not knowing what to wear?
Has keeping up with the latest trends become
too much for you? Don’t worry, Get It called in
qualified image consultant and stylist, Minnette
Oliver from We Wear What, to tell us all about
the latest summer trends for 2020 that will make
choosing a wardrobe easier and much more fun.
What are the big fashion
trends to look out for in
November?
• Go baggy – highwaisted
oversized
jeans, paired with a
white top. A new style
denim is the number
one way to update
your wardrobe this
summer.
• T-shirts with shoulder pads
• Sporty casual outfits with accents or sneakers in
neon.
• Crop tops if you’re lucky enough to be able to
wear them, and even a bra-like top under blazers.
• Puffy sleeved dresses
• The summer slip dress, in silk.
When it comes to tropical colours for
clothing, what advice do you have for our
readers?
• Colours like butter yellow, mint and violet purple
will be making the rounds this summer.
• If you don’t know which colour suits you, wear
the colour on the bottom half of your body to
make the effect on your skin tone less.
Which colour is always a YES and why?
Everyone who knows me, knows the answer is beige.
Any form of beige, for example white, off-white,
creams, nudes, stone, etc., is always elegant and
flattering on all skin tones. It also works with any other
colour, and is a great replacement for black as a staple.
What is a big NO NO when it comes to
picking a nice tropical outfit?
Keep the pattern size small and delicate. Patterns that
are too big and bold may overwhelm you and not
create an expensive look.
Which trends are cool in your opinion?
Chunky boots with dresses
Mom jeans (high-waisted and baggy)
How would you style a typical
tropical outfit for a day out?
This would be high waisted shorts for me in a print
or colour like yellow, worn with either a crisp, white
blouse or a body-hugging top. Pair with sneakers or
square-toed sandals.
Short dresses paired with espadrilles are a must.
Any additional comments and
information?
Finish your tropical outfit with a gorgeous beach bag
in an oversized, neutral colour and golden accessories
like chunky earrings and oversized chain.
Looking your best doesn’t have to mean
blowing your budget when you have these
skin essentials and treatments at your
fingertips.
TOP 3
The term “organic” has various
meanings, but typically means
that there are no unwanted
chemicals and that the ingredients
used are grown organically.
This trend is making its way to
the surface due to the fact that
most women today do thorough
research before buying into a
new skincare product. We look
for products that are less harmful
to our skin and for those that can
create the perfect skin complexion
naturally.
Do not let your skin down by not
using sunscreen daily. Sunscreen
is the most effective anti-ageing
regime out there. Do your research
and find a facial sunscreen that will
protect your skin this summer.
Many conventional mascara
products are hard to imagine
putting into your eyelashes, and yet,
the mascara ends up in your eyes at
the end of the day. Find yourself a
mascara that has organic materials
in that are not harmful to your eyes.
3 CLEAN LIPS
Did you know that you eat a large
percentage of the lipstick you use
on your lips? One would not think
of lipstick in this way, but it is about
time. Find a lipstick with natural
minerals and colorants which would
in turn not be harmful to your body
when ingested.
LASER sharp
Fraxel laser treatment targets
ageing and sun-damaged skin with
microscopic laser columns that
penetrate deep into your skin to
stimulate collagen production.
Compiled by NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE
The laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, so it
leaves the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes
very rapid healing. The treatment resurfaces your skin by
stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin cells from the
inside out.
Fraxel has been shown to improve skin issues such as fine
lines and wrinkles, surface scarring, pigmentation and
sun damage. Clinical studies suggest that on average, an
effective treatment regimen includes three to five sessions
spaced about two to four weeks apart.
Depending on the treated condition and schedule, you
may need to space treatment sessions further apart.
Results are immediate and progressive, with optimal
improvement usually visible in two to three months. This
time frame and treatment structure allow for healing and
the production of new collagen to replace damaged tissue.
During the session, your skin will first be cleansed. Then,
about 60 minutes before treatment, a topical anaesthetic
ointment will be applied to the area being treated. The
procedure takes between twenty to twenty five minutes
for a full face.
The results may include smoother, fresher, younger-looking
skin, improved tone and texture, including acne scars and
surgical scars. There will be a reduction of unwanted brown
spots as well as a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
around the eyes.
Although the treatment isn’t known to be painful, most
patients describe an increased sensation of heat during the
treatment. To minimise discomfort, topical anaesthesia is
applied before the procedure and cold air is used on the
area being treated during the procedure.
After the treatment, most patients feel like they have a
sunburn, which usually diminishes in one to three hours.
So it’s important to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen of
SPF 30 or higher and avoid direct sun exposure for at least
three months after your last treatment.
