Tech to the rescue

As travel and tourism experience the

toughest crisis in their history, all cards are

on the table when it comes to staying ahead

of what will be an ever increasingly tough

and competitive pack when the big machine

gets back up and running.

Numerous are the ways in which businesses

are learning to survive the storm and set sails

towards better climes. One of the keys is

the savvy utilisation of technology to hone

efficiency to the Nth degree.

With Travel Tech Asia debuting in

Singapore, co-located with ITB Asia 2020

Virtual and MICE Show Asia, this is now the

“Premier Travel Tech Show” in Asia. Here, the

latest technologies, emerging trends, leading

travel brands and innovative start-ups are all

at one place to create the new possibilities of

travel. At the same time, the Hotel Revenue

& Distribution Summit also brings together

key industry players - including top, midsize

and emerging hotels, resorts and other

accommodations - to share thoughtprovoking

ideas, solutions and innovations

for hotel revenue management and

distribution in Asia. Topics include: How

hotels and suppliers are changing the game

for everyone; Hotel 2.0: What will the hotel of

the future be like?... and - Coopetition: Direct

booking & working with OTAs.

These are integral, essential elements in

the success recipe for travel and tourism

players today. We recommend not missing

a moment!

Highlights

Travelling … and leading

… in the new normal

Today’s list of conferences is so rich,

it’s impossible to cover everything in

a few sentences. For this reason, I’ve

decided to really spotlight our three

main keynotes this morning, which will

be setting the stage for another highly

productive day at ITB Asia 2020.

The first is Travelling in the New Normal, with

Axel Hefer, Managing Director & CEO, trivago.

The WHO is warning that it could take up to

five years before the pandemic is truly under

control, and the virus may never go away. This

session will explore how it’s like to travel – and

do business in travel – in the new normal.

The second is entitled “Leadership in Times

of Crisis” – with Deep Kalra, Founder & Group

Executive Chairman, MakeMyTrip, hosted by

Philip C. Wolf, Founder, PhoCusWright, Mentor

& Serial Board Director. Enduring a crisis of this

magnitude calls for leaders to demonstrate visible

decisiveness, to proactively address human

aspects of the crisis, reflect optimistic yet

realistic outlook – while taking decisions in the

of Messe Berlin (Singapore),

the organiser of ITB Asia

best interest of every stakeholder. Companies

and leaders have to reset for growth beyond the

COVID-19 crisis and deal with the multitude

of challenges while continuing to inspire and

motivate.

The third keynote today is entitled, “The

Experience Starts Online: Attracting Travellers

With Memorable and Easy to Book Tours and

Activities” with Ben Drew, President, Viator,

Kristin Dorsett, VP of Supply, Viator, and Shiyi

Tay, Manager, Business Planning, Tour East

Group. Join us for this keynote as we rediscover

and modernise our view on what makes a

tour or activity truly awesome – easy to book,

expectation-exceeding and memorable. Sharing

key traveller insights from the past year and

looking towards the future, we’ll share actions

you can take – and operator examples – to reinvigorate

your experiences for the new traveller

journey.

It goes without saying that the list of C-Suite

talks today is also mind boggling. Please take

the time to consult the programme and take in

as many as you can!

I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I

AmEx launches Travel Vitals

to help travel managers

and travellers in turbulent times

Exclusive Interview: Joanne Sully - Vice President and General

Manager - American Express Global Business Travel (GBT), Asia Pacific

AmEx GBT has been working hard in APAC to counter the

effects of the Covid-19 situation. We asked Joanne Sully, Vice

President and General Manager for American Express Global

Business Travel (GBT), Asia Pacific, how the organisation has

been helping its clients and partners at this time.

When the world went into

lockdown back in March, our first

response was to mobilise our

incident management response

team and implement a business

continuity plan. In these early days,

our travel counsellors around the

world repatriated more than 35,000

passengers and we processed

more than 100,000 refunds.

Our teams went all out to locate

travellers, supply travel managers

with reports and analytics and get

people home to their loved ones.

We were an essential partner in

supporting companies to fulfil their

duty of care obligations.

WE ARE ARMING

TRAVEL MANAGERS

AND TRAVELLERS

ALIKE, AND

MAKING SURE

THEY HAVE "KNOW

BEFORE YOU GO"

INFORMATION AT

THEIR FINGERTIPS

Traveller confidence though has

been shaken. Gaining this back is

essential to get the world moving

again.

Now, we are arming travel

managers and travellers alike,

and making sure they have "know

before you go" information at their

fingertips. We’ve launched a new

tool called Travel Vitals which

aggregates information from

hundreds of sources to provide

the essential Covid-19 information

a traveller needs, all in one place.

We can help clients pinpoint and

communicate with travellers in a

crisis by using GPS and recent

credit card data combined with

itinerary information. In everyday

travel, we have numerous channels

for travellers and travel managers,

such as in-app messaging, and live

webchat with travel counsellors, as

well as phone, SMS and email.

Managing forward-looking

traveller data is also critical: In this

vein, we’ve helped thousands of

clients look at forward bookings

by proactively pulling data,

identifying and communicating

with clients and employees that

needed support.

What sectors are you seeing

emerging at this point and what

are the most challenging?

Our data tells us domestic travel is

returning more quickly and more

strongly than international travel,

primarily because there are less

restrictions from governments.

Around the world, economies have

been severely impacted by the

lack of travel. Perhaps the biggest

challenge we have is restriction,

rather than demand. And we

can’t really gain confidence

in travel without governments

looking to open-up borders again

internationally.

We can see some proactive policy

in places like Singapore with the

establishment of Safe Travel Pass

schemes with countries including

China, Malaysia and New Zealand.

But for business travel to play a

vital role in restarting the global

economy, we need to see more

governments embrace proactive

policies. Only then can we get the

world moving again.

Joanne Sully

Vice President and General Manager

- American Express Global Business

Travel (GBT), Asia Pacific

What were the key messages in

your presentation at ITB Asia 2020

Virtual ?

Building traveller confidence and

how TMCs partner with companies

and travel managers to do this is

the key message for our session.

This is a defining moment for TMCs

and we are uniquely positioned to

build trust back in business travel.

We are well placed to partner

with our clients, travellers and

their companies in this new era of

travel

National Park Hohe Tauern

Monte Carlo –

a very “Suite”

experience

AUSTRIA +

SOUTHEAST ASIA:

GROWTH BOTH

OUTBOUND AND

INBOUND

While Southeast Asia (SEA) is a preferred

holiday destination for Austrians, by the

same token, Austria has become more and

more popular over the past years as a tourist

destination for Southeast Asian's (SE Asians).

The numbers of guests and room nights for SE Asians in

Austria have almost tripled within the past five years. In

2019, 257,000 guests from the SEA-region visited Austria

and generated almost half a million room nights. The

most important source markets from SEA for Austria are

Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

The most frequently visited destination is Vienna followed

by the city of Salzburg (Mozart's birthplace), the alpine

city of Innsbruck and the picturesque Salzkammergut

lakes and mountain area. Guests from the region are

known to visit the country for the rich cultural highlights

as well as for the beautiful nature and alpine landscapes.

The past year has seen a number of major announcements in the

world’s capital of glitz and glamour.

The renovation of Monte Carlo’s the Hotel

de Paris resulted last year in the total

transformation of the landmark property.

The hotel has written a new page in its

history, with transformed guestrooms

and spaces, the creation of an interior

Patio (an ultra-exclusive showcase

for luxury jewellery brands), and the

launch of ÔMER, the new Alain Ducasse

restaurant. The crown jewel of the hotel’s

metamorphosis has been the creation of

Suite Prince Rainier III, the largest suite

in Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo in terms

of interior space, with 600 m² of refined

luxury. A "Rooftop Villa" is the jewel in the

crown of the new Hôtel de Paris Monte-

Carlo

To complete the transformation that was

initiated in 2014, Hôtel de Paris Monte-

Carlo reunites the Principality’s most

iconic couple – Princess Grace and Prince

Rainier, Suite Princesse Grace, launched

in 2017, inspired by the timeless elegance

of Grace of Monaco, is now joined by

Suite Prince Rainier III, the largest suite in

the hotel in terms of interior spaces, with

600 m² of refined luxury. It is completed

by a rooftop villa - a unique creation -

with an additional 135 m² of exterior

space offering breath-taking views over

the mythical Place du Casino.

To celebrate the 15 th anniversary of

the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel on the

Larvotto seafront, the exceptionally

luxurious Diamond Suite Eleven has

opened. Perched on the hotel’s top

floor, it offers one of the most beautiful

views of the Mediterranean in a refined

setting. This is the latest addition to

the hotel's prestigious range of suit

accommodation, such as the Rafael Nadal

Suite, chosen by the tennis champion for

his stays in Monaco

View from the new Prince Rainier III Suite in Monte Carlo

Austria is a small country: compact, easy to get to know

and delightful to see. It boasts a spectacular scenery

and a rich cultural heritage. In some way, one could say

Austria is Europe in a nutshell.

Austria prides itself on its outstanding natural beauty

and spectacular scenery; crystal clear lakes ringed by

deep green hills and domineering mountains. Wooded

hills rising out of lush farmland, Alpine peaks reaching for

the sky, peaceful pastures and quaint villages resting at

their feet as well as vineyards, ancient castles and grand

abbeys.

Due to the Covid-19 situation, leisure travel on both sides

is currently not possible, but tourism authorities are

looking forward to further enhancing the touristic ties in

the near future
