SD8 purchases

giant floor map

The Aboriginal Education department in SD8 Kootenay

Lake has purchased two giant floor maps as supplemental

resources for the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada.

The map measures 11 metres by 8 metres. It includes language

families, traditional territories, traditional place names,

treaty information, geographical and topographical layouts,

Indian Residential School locations, Metis settlements, Indian

Reserves, cities and towns with significant First Nations,

Metis, and Inuit populations. There is a timeline around the

edge of the map which includes Indigenous events, people,

places throughout the history of Turtle Island.

This resource assists educators in addressing and teaching

big ideas, critical thinking, personal and social responsibility,

communication, connections, equity for Indigenous students,

confronting implicit biases and privilege, and informs an

anti-racist perspective.

ZOOM WORKSHOP: “Gone From My

Sight: Moving Through Personal and

Community Grief”. Saturday, Nov. 14,

10-11:30am. Everyone Welcome! In

this workshop we will look at how we

approach living, dying, death, grieving

and mourning and how we can support

one another. We can’t talk about

dying without including living. Are we

afraid of life? Is it difficult to “let go” in

life? Do we have a habit of “unfinished

business”? Duncan will speak to this,

using the Medicine Wheel teachings

of the Siksika/Sauk and the Perennial

Tradition. Duncan’s professional experience

includes 36 years of psychotherapy

in addictions, trauma, death

and dying. He has a Masters Degree in

Counseling Psychology and a Doctorate

of Divinity. He is an Elder of the Circle

of Indigenous Nations Society. He

currently co-leads retreats and works

with communities impacted by lateral

violence, drug overdose and death.

Duncan provides training and consultation

in health, well-being, spirituality,

Visiting Runes

The Illustrated Book of Runes is a project currently

in the crowd-funding stage being created

by Nelson area artist Dawn Ravenwind aka.

Steeves. The project is to create a comprehensive

art book of the Elder Futhark runes, also

known as the Viking runes. The Illustrated Book

of Runes will be the first artbook of the runes

and it uses the symbology each rune represents

to create the illustrations. The art is a collection

of strikingly detailed watercolour paintings,

and the write-ups about them are inspiring and

thoughtful.

The Elder Futhark is an alphabet that was created

by the ancient Germanic peoples. Not only

was it used for writing, but it was also a system

of divination and magic. The premise is that

each sound is a vibration and each vibration is

an energy that relates to a universal concept and

is linked to higher wisdom. The Illustrated Book

of Runes will have detailed illustrations with

the symbols each of the Elder Futhark runes

represents.

RDCK wins award

In collaboration with the Regional District of East Kootenay

(RDEK), the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB)

and Columbia Basin Trust, the Regional District of Central

Kootenay was selected as a winner of a 2020 Sustainable Communities

Award for exceptional work in the Visionary Award

category for Accelerate Kootenays. The award honours and celebrates

the most innovative environmental initiatives in cites

and communities across Canada. The Accelerate Kootenays

Project was the first community driven collaborative strategy

charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EV) throughout

the region within communities. It was coordinated over three

years, at the cost of $1.89 million and involved multiple partners

with varying expertise to transform a rural region into

“Bats in BC help control agricultural and forest pests, as

well as mosquitoes in our yards but now bats need our help,”

says Mandy Kellner, coordinator for the BC Community Bat

Program.

“The conservation of bats in BC has always been important,

since over half the species in this province are considered at

risk. With the continuing spread of White-nose Syndrome in

Washington State, bat conservation is more important than

ever as we expect to see impacts in BC in the near future. ”

Late fall/early winter is also the time to say ‘so long’ to bats

in our neighbourhoods, until the return of insects with the

warmer weather in spring. As insect-eaters, our BC bats must

leave their summer roost sites and migrate or hibernate to survive

the winter. This absence means that this is the time of year

to do home renovations that you have delayed due to bat presence.

You can clean out and repair a bat box, or do bat-friendly

exclusion work, without disturbing or injuring bats.

If you do see a bat in winter, please report it. Monitoring for

White-nose Syndrome in BC will continue this winter, with

Community Bat Programs requesting reports of dead bats or

sightings of winter bat activity starting November 1.

The BC Community Bat Program provides information

about bats in buildings, conducts site visits to advise landowners

on managing bats in buildings, and coordinates the BC

Annual Bat Count.

You can report winter bat sightings, find out more about the

BC Community Bat Program, BatWeek activities, and options

for helping local bat populations, at www.bcbats.ca, info@

bcbats.ca, or 1-855-922-2287.

Grace grew up in Trail and spent

her summers at her family’s lake

house in Harrop. She spent her

adult life living on the Procter

side of the lake, working on the

ferry and living in the country

where she surrounded herself

with her dogs, horses and other

animals that she loved so much.

In 1989 she met Jack, they

married and built a beautiful life

together for more than 30 years.

Grace was always surrounded

by family and friends. Her home

and deck was the hub for everyone

she loved and was often filled

with people visiting and having

fun. Grace loved her home and

community. Her travels took her

to Prince Rupert fishing and to

her heritage roots in Scotland

and countless road trips with

friends and family.

A best friend to many was lost

that day. Grace is predeceased

by her parents Johnny and

Bessie Woods. Left behind are

best friend and husband Jack;

her stepchildren Brad (James,

Courtney), Brenda (Gus) and

Cheri (Brittni, Sammi); her sister

Catherine (Laurryn, Lindsey,

Matthew, Kate and Brooke);

brother Jack and sister-in-law Jan

(Casie, Jason, Molly) and sister

Jeanie and brother-in-law Harold

(Jackie, Jillie, Johnny).

Grace was a source of unconditional

love and support, truly the

greatest cheerleader, and memory

maker. She was a saviour to

anyone in need, and the person

we turned to when we wanted to

have a whole lot of fun. She provided

us with cherished memories

we will carry forever.

Grace was a devoted wife, step

mom, nana, sister and friend.

She truly was “Amazing Grace.”

Our hearts are broken, we will

miss her beyond words.

’Twas grace hath brought

us safe thus far,

And grace will lead us home.

We hope it won’t be too long,

perhaps the spring, when everyone

who knew and loved her can

gather together safely in celebration

of Gracie’s life.

SUDOKU

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,

broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve

a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill

each row, column and box. Each number

can appear only once in each row, column

and box. You can figure out the order in

which the numbers will appear by using the

numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

The more numbers you name, the easier it

gets to solve the puzzle!

Celebrating the Métis

Each year, the Kootenay Lake School

District honours our Métis community by

observing Métis Awareness month. The Métis

Nation is a distinct Indigenous people with

both First Nations and European ancestry.

SD8 respects, honours and acknowledges all

Aboriginal people residing within the boundaries

of the school district and throughout

November is hosting several activities to celebrate

Métis culture.

“Students and families can engage in a variety

of safe ways,” says Danica Weager, District

Indigenization Coordinator, “There are video

resources, zoom meetings being planned,

youth circles and even a book club to join!”

Métis Awareness Month is developed and

planned in partnership with the local West

Kootenay Métis Society. This community-based

partnership provides guidance and

connections and helps to connect students

with the local nation through localized presenters

and knowledge keepers.

students to learn more about Métis culture, history, language by

participating in a variety of educational initiatives this month.

“It is important we look to our Métis elders to share words,

wisdom and intentions this month,” commented Weager.

In the spirit of honouring Métis contributions to literature, a

special conversation with elder and author Maria Campbell is

open to all staff, students and families. Campbell, author of her

memoir Half-breed, will join those interested in a conversation

on November 10th. Contact the Aboriginal Education department

for more details on how to sign up.

In addition, the book From the Ashes, by Jesse Thistle will be

the featured piece of literature in a special book club that is open

to everyone to join. Email Danica.weager@sd8.bc.ca to sign up.

For Métis youth, Grade 8 and up, the Aboriginal Education

department will be hosting a series of youth circles with LVR

graduate and Métis youth role model Charly Defouw. All youth

programming details and additional resources can be accessed on

the Aboriginal Education website: https://aboriginal.sd8.bc.ca/

“By learning about Métis culture, we encourage discussions

about the gifts that different communities bring to our lives

and help us shift our narratives,” shared Weager. “We encourage

everyone to get involved!”

School District 8

Know a kid who loves to tinker?

The Kootenay Contraption Contest is back! This annual GLOWS

event invites students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 to imagine,

design and illustrate a “contraption” that solves a problem.

Through this contest, GLOWS is encouraging students to use

critical thinking, problem solving and innovation. It will also

help them develop creative pitch skills! Students love the opportunity

to use their limitless imaginations and experience their

ideas as they evolve into design concepts.

The theme of the 2020 Kootenay Contraption contest is Education.

For this year’s Kootenay Contraption Contest, we challenge

individual students and entire classes to come up with the

most creative, imaginative “contraption” they can dream up to

solve this challenge:

• Think about a tricky or difficult issue you’re facing at

school or homeschool.

• Create a contraption using STEAM (Science Technology,

Engineering, Art and Math) to overcome this problem so

that students/educators of the future won’t have the same

challenge.

In 2020, education has been both renewed and altered. We

can’t wait to see even more innovative ideas students in our

region share with us during the contest running October 26

November 20, 2020. To learn more about the Kootenay Contraption

Contest, or to enter, visit: www.kast.com/kcc

Report measures

the benefits of BC’s

community forests

The BC Community Forest Association

just released the 2020 Community Forest

Indicators Report. The Indicators Report,

now in its 6th year, contains analysis of 18

different areas where community forests

deliver economic, social, cultural, and

environmental benefits to their rural and

Indigenous communities and to the province.

Along with the quantitative information,

the report is filled with stories and photos

that further demonstrate the importance of

community forests to the sustainable future

of these communities and the land that

surrounds them.

“Community forests are showing British

Columbians that forest management can be

much more than timber harvesting and the

economic bottom line. By supporting the

success of existing community forests and

by investing in the creation of more and

larger community forests, the province can

solve multiple problems. The time is now to

empower communities to become true partners

in modern, collaborative, and sustainable

land management,” said Jennifer Gunter,

executive director of the BCCFA.

Thirty-two community forests participated

in the 2019/2020 survey, providing data from

their last reporting year, specific to their

operations. This sample represents 73 percent

of the operating community forests in

the BCCFA. Most are small rural communities,

Indigenous and non-Indigenous, with an

average population of 3,965.

Community forests are creating more jobs

in rural communities. This year’s results show

that community forests are creating 85% more

jobs/m3 than the industry average in their

forestry, logging and support services. They

operate in sensitive areas and are reliably supplying

logs to both major processing facilities

and small manufacturers. They are generating

economic activity, while contributing to local

projects.

With community forests located primarily

in the land surrounding communities, they

are acting on the urgent need to manage these

areas to adapt to climate change and mitigate

the risk of catastrophic wildfire. This year’s

results show a tripling of the community

forests’ own investments in wildfire management

evidence of the leadership role that

community forests are playing. They are managing

for ecosystem resilience and investing

in forest stewardship, above and beyond legal

requirements.

Mountain bike exhibit

receives provincial

recognition

In the summer and fall of 2018, Touchstones

Nelson Museum celebrated the history

of mountain biking the thrills, spills and

tales in Nelson and area. It was one of the

museum’s most popular exhibitions ever, with

hundreds attending the opening and closing

events, and thousands of people visiting the

show from Nelson and far beyond. Not only

did the community celebrate the success of

the show, but now the greater museum community

in BC has recognized the relevancy

and reach of the exhibition.

A Mountain Biking Retrospective was chosen

by the BC Museums Association to be

honoured with a BCMA Award of Outstanding

Achievement. Only two other museums

in BC received awards the

Museum of Surrey received the

Award of Merit, Excellence in

Community Engagement; and

Two Rivers Gallery received

the Award of Merit, Excellence

in Exhibitions. The BC Museums

Association jury decided

that A Mountain Biking Retrospective

deserved special

recognition and received a

BCMA Award of Outstanding

Achievement: Honourable

Mention for Impact and

Engagement. As Mark Holt,

owner of The Sacred Ride, trail

builder and one of the great

Nelson biking champions said:

“We got third—that’s a bronze

medal!”

This exhibit responded to

an unexplored yet vital part

of the community’s identity

and contemporary cultural

development,” the BC Museums

Association stated in a

press release. “The exhibit was

multi-faceted and strategically

executed. This museum understood its community

and stimulated museum interest by

exploring an activity many in the community

embraced wholeheartedly.”

“We are thrilled to receive this award,”

said Astrid Heyerdahl, executive director of

Touchstones Nelson, and the curator of the

exhibition. “The list of individuals, trail builders,

riders, local mountain bike stars, community

groups, mountain

bike associations throughout

the Kootenays, artists,

filmmakers, historians, and

businesses that contributed

to this exhibition is exceptional

it was truly built

by those who created this

history, and further form

the mountain bike culture

today.”

“The Nelson Cycling

Club was pleased to partner

with Touchstones Nelson:

Museum of Art and History

on this project,” says Deb

MacKillop. “We believe the

outcome has increased local

understanding of the role

that mountain biking and

mountain bike trails have
