Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

Here it is, my final column under the 

current administration. Will it be 

four more years of MAGA annoyingness 

and a roaring economy? Or six 

weeks of badakathcare and trunalimunumaprzure 

before George Lopez takes 

over? As I write (11am Sunday morning) we’re 

still a few days away from our eternal reckoning 

and just don’t know. But what I do know is that, 

finally, after four years of obsessive sharing, 

your pro-anti-Biden-Trump Facebook posts 

will DEFINITELY make a difference. Or most 

likely not. Because nobody cares how you vote. 

Though we appreciate all your virtue signaling. 

(Also, nobody goes on Facebook anymore 

because you’ve all ruined it with your politics.) 

It is my great hope that we can just turn 

the page on Tuesday night and go back to our 

normal lives, but if the last four years and, 

especially, the last eight months have taught 

me anything, it’s that nobody is happy no 

matter what. 

Speaking of unhappy, it is my solemn duty 

to inform you that I write to you this week 

through the fog of the worst flu I’ve had since 

I was probably 10 years old. Like, seriously 

bad. Used to be spending a weekend in bed 

was the dream. Now it just means my hips and 

shoulders are going to be really sore when I get 

up to feed myself because no one else in this 

goddamn house will feed me. (Sorry, sorry… 

that’s the Nyquil talking.) Anyway, if I’m lucky, 

I’ll be dead by Tuesday. 

Attention Whores of the Week: (Sorry! 

Sorry… it’s the medication, I promise.) Ginny 

and Hugh Murray just HAD to be on the cover 

of Exit Zero last week, didn’t they? Couldn’t 

even let me enjoy the afterglow of being the 

previous week’s cover boy, could they? I tell 

ya, if they weren’t two of the nicest people in 

Cape May who repeatedly go out of their way 

to support local arts and businesses, I’d be 

pretty sore. (And Ginny, you still owe me $1 in 

my G-string.) 

We’ve got some pretty cool semi-social 

event coming up at EZ. To begin with, our 

music schedule has been pared down to TNT 

on Fridays and Saturdays, Nancy Malcun on 

Wednesdays and Camille Peruto on any other 

night that’s over 60 degrees. This is one pretty 

talented, awfully good looking lineup, and the 

coolest part is this — on Saturday 12/5 (traditionally 

the night of the WCM Christmas 

parade) we’ll all be performing, inside and 

out, from 5-9, culminating in something of a 

super group as we all join forces for a final set 

of Christmas songs. I cannot WAIT to stand 

between these two incredibly gifted singers 

and drop in a few harmonies.

Then on New Year’s Eve, TNT 

will be bringing you an acoustic 

tribute night, featuring the music 

of the Eagles, Neil Diamond and 

Bruce Springsteen, 8-12. And… 

did I write about all of this last 

week? It feels like I wrote about all 

of this last week. Anyway, come 

one out, it’ll be a lot of fun.

I’m pretty sure it was Regina 

King asking for a table at EZ 

during our down hour between 

brunch and dinner last Saturday. 

Was hard to tell what with all the 

masking, but the eyes and hair 

were similar. For once I chose to 

be circumspect but am now deeply 

regretting not yelling, “I LOVED 

WATCHMEN!” Because I did. 

I pulled into Gaiss’ “parking 

lot” during delivery on Thursday 

(Gaiss’ is a fantastic deli in Villas 

with the best cheesesteaks in Cape 

May County, but the parking situation 

is hilariously nightmarish) 

and I kind of parked somebody in 

but I was only going to be there 30 

seconds when a hale and hearty 

voice booms, “Terry O’Brien!” 

This is it, I thought. This is how 

I die. Turns out it was just longtime 

reader Jim Howe. He asked 

after my kids (they’re fine), and if I 

still ran into Jason Black (sort-of), 

before pointedly staring at my 

Highlander. “Ah! You want to 

leave! Got it!” Marlene O’Brien’s 

boy is quick on the uptake. 

Speaking of deliveries, I know 

the little masthead on the first 

page of this rag says “Distribution 

Manager: Terry O’Brien”, but I’d 

be nothing without my righthand 

person, Melissa O’Donnell. 

I’ve been meaning to say this for 

months but, well, I’m really bad at 

giving other people credit for stuff. 

While I’m kind of the big picture 

guy, Melissa makes sure all the Is 

are dotted and Ts are crossed and 

she did a lot (meaning most) of 

the (figurative) heavy-lifting on 

our color issues and Cool Cape May 

books. There was plenty of literal 

heavy lifting, as well, but she had 

help with that. 

A couple of musical observations 

from the road — there’s a 

new Pearl Jam song that nobody 

asked for playing on XPN, and 

when I tell you that Eddie Vedder 

now sounds like David Byrne 

you’ll be unable to un-hear it. 

There is also a new Stevie Nicks 

song making the rounds that I 

thought was Miley Cyrus and I’m 

not sure what that says. 

My soap, Dove+ Men Care, 

has “a patented design and unique 

technology.” Does your soap? 

Got in the car on Wednesday 

and “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” 

by Poison was on the radio and 

if I had a hammer I would have 

smashed it into 1000 pieces.

Katie Dowe. When I was a little 

insecure after putting on an XL 

instead of XXL uniform shirt she 

said, “No, you look good. I’d tell 

you if you looked fat.” Somehow, 

I believe her. At least she wasn’t 

boasting about her flicking acumen 

this time. 

I know Cath is mad at me 

when I come home and the house 

is clean. I don’t like when she’s 

mad at me, but I do like a clean 

house. Welcome to my TED talk. 

I started and just as quickly 

stopped watching The Haunting of 

Bly Manor on Netflix. If I want to 

be lectured by humorless lesbians 

for 10 hours I’ll turn on Maddow. 

Almost forgot about my 

Weekly Weight Watch: 227.5, 

which is about where I’ve been 

hovering. But now that I’ve taken 

the ridiculous step of going public 

with it again, I will repeat my 

stated desire to get under 200 by 

the end of the year. That’s a big 

bite, but this flu should give me a 

pretty good running start.

The Theater Column 

By arts columnist Tom Sims 

With this long-awaited election, 

consider the cautionary words 

of Ambrose Bierce, “People have 

as good a government as they 

deserve.” The author’s life is the 

subject of Nothing Matters, a new online production 

from East Lynne Theater Company. 

Not a reading or staged recital, but an actual 

play. Watching this production will help those 

longing to experience a staged performance. 

Bierce says, “The simple way to correct 

public evils is to put wise and good men in 

power. And if you cannot do that you, you 

yourselves are not wise and good.” Bierce was 

a late 1800s American poet, author, journalist, 

war hero, and celebrated author of An 

Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. That work is 

often praised as one of the best short stories 

in American literature. He said of his own 

political aspirations, “I am a journalist and a 

poet, but I draw the line no lower.” 

In the play, Bierce is played by a genuine 

and passionate James Rana. He is visited 

by poet Amanda Wentworth (played with 

brilliant rapport by Gayle Stahlhuth), who is 

seeking advice on her own work. And she gets 

advice! She learns a personal history of Bierce 

that few know. Once again, ELTC brings a 

historical figure to life who may otherwise 

fade away. Bierce goes through his humble 

beginnings, a soldier during the Civil War, its 

aftermath, a journey west, and career in journalism 

in San Francisco. 

After a brief and stormy time in industry, 

Bierce returns to writing and begins to work 

at a satirical newspaper where we see much 

of his satire begin to surface. We begin to 

see some of his definitions, such as “Love: a 

temporary insanity curable only by marriage.” 

These musings will ultimately be the topic of 

his work, The Devil’s Dictionary. 

Bierce goes through the unthinkable — 

the loss of a child. You feel his recounting 

of the grief and understand his summary of 

the entire tragedy as he insists that “nothing 

matters.” In another story, Bierce was urged by 

eccentric, megalomaniac-millionaire William 

Randolph Hearst, who needed the journalist’s 

endorsement of the Spanish American War to 

help his hopeful bid for President. 

Nothing Matters is timeless and timely — a 

tribute to writers, poets and all who protect 

the truth and stand the test of time. In some 

cases, prophetic, at other times an insightful

I 

do love a bath. The thought came to me 

the other night as Kitchener and I reenacted 

the Battle of Jutland in the tub. I had 

just scored a direct hit on Derff linger and 

was signaling to Admiral Young Albert 

(commanding my reserves from the plug end). 

Through the steam and smoke, I could see 

Kitchener’s red face and wide mustache, and 

around the edge of the bath, the rest of the 

household staff, cheering on whichever side 

their family lineage demanded. I should mention, 

in case you are picturing us in what might 

be considered cramped and strange posture, 

that the tub measures 15 feet in diameter and 

reaches a depth of a fathom near the plug. 

Normally I occupy it alone, save for a lifeguard 

and a personal retainer — more than 

one D’Catur ancestor has been found f loating 

face down in their bath over the years. Most 

times overindulgence was the culprit, though 

assassination is not unknown, so the smarter 

D’Catur heirs have all their staff watching 

each other. I have, as an added precaution, a

drain is JUST able to accommodate a 

man of slim hip such as myself. 

My faithful manservant, Kitchener, loves 

our naval reenactments, though more than 

once I have caught him aiming at me, rather 

than my f leet — we use live ammunition, and 

a broadside could take a chap’s eye out, and I 

will not go into details as to the damage a stray 

underwater torpedo can inf lict. 

Mostly, though, I simply soak and think: 

most of my truly great ideas have come to 

me in that tub, and I confess some brilliant 

but ill-conceived ones — scientific study has 

shown that after exactly 57 minutes in water, 

not only do a person’s fingers go all wrinkly, 

but one’s head becomes porous and water plus 

whatever bubble bath solution one is using 

seeps in, clouding one’s mental processes. My 

scheme to make Cape May the world center 

for rescue apes from TV shows and movies, for 

example, was compassionate and genius. In 

practice, 500 neurotic monkeys in little waistcoats 

riding around town on tricycles was less 

tranquil than hoped for. On THAT occasion 

I had to hide under the bathwater breathing 

from a straw until my staff drove them off 

with flamethrowers and bananas. 

And once in a long while I host a bath 

party: I shall say no more about that, for fear 

of embarrassing many of you by name. Suffice 

of to say, if you scent lavender and see a loved 

one’s hair looking freshly washed, then they 

have attended. The scamps.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, relax with a game of bingo! 

Take a chance on an old game — bingo. 

Bingo is a derivation of Lo Giuoco 

del Lotto, a game of chance born in 

16th century Italy, played on rectangular 

boards, with nine spaces across 

and three down. The game was popular in 

Europe for centuries under names like keno, 

tombola, housy-housy and fortune. Toymaker 

Edwin S. Lowe promoted the game in the 

United States, adapting a carnival version 

known as Beano. With the help of mathematician 

Carl Leffler, Lowe sold game sets with 

6,000 combinations, thereby reducing duplications 

and double winners. Single winners 

became the norm so, prizes could be generous. 

Bingo was used to raise funds for churches and 

charities, as promotion in movie theaters and 

as a popular social activity for senior citizens. 

Bingo has kept military personnel distracted 

during wartime. Teachers use Bingo-style 

games to teach multiplication, sight words, 

fractions and shapes. During the pandemic, 

virtual Bingo games help keep communities 

connected. Social media hashtags let you 

publicize the alignment of your squares for 

“clapped for nurses,” “grouchy spouse,” “full 

dishwasher” and “abandoned jigsaw puzzle.” 

Make your own Bingo cards for a Zoom 

party. Print a blank, five by five board, put 

a free space in the middle and make copies. 

Label each space something unique — 

someone says, “long story short” or “back 

to normal” and even “argument breaks out,” 

“screen freezes” or “dog knocks something 

over.” Or, customize your Bingo cards for a 

reality show watch party, using buzzwords or 

common situations as spaces. Like, for House 

Hunters, spaces could include, “paint is cheap,” 

“light and airy,” and “the kitchen needs updating.” 

Or, re-watch a beloved movie together 

using memorable lines to fill the boards. Have 

prizes related to the theme, or a joke prize 

like a repurposed bowling trophy from your 

pre-pandemic days. 

If you prefer a traditional Bingo game 

with a caller and snacks, consider “Brunch 

and Bingo at the Beach,” presented by MAC. 

On Saturday, November 21, from 9:30 to 11:30, 

play at Aleathea’s Restaurant in the Inn of 

Cape May. Tickets are $25, seating begins 10 

minutes before ticket time, masks are required 

and parking is available in the lot across the 

street. Brunch at Aleathea’s is usually delicious, 

and they may be able to accommodate 

special seating or dietary restrictions if you 

make your request in advance, not on the day

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

We’re down to ducks. You folks 

who have waited for fall migration 

to kick into gear, dawdled, 

too long. Autumn migration is 

winding down. Songbirds are 

all but spent. Raptors are winding down. 

Shorebirds are gone. 

Cape May is however a waterfowl-rich 

environment. Bunker Pond and nearby 

Lighthouse Pond host hundreds of ducks of 

multiple species — Mallards, Rakish Northern 

Pintails and Dapper Gadwalls. American 

Wigeon with their comical, two-note toot and 

Ruddy ducks so amiable their bills are twisted 

into a smile. Offshore, groups of sea ducks are 

passing — strings of dark-bodied ducks that 

writhe like bands of smoke across the horizon. 

Black Scoters are compact, Surf Scoters 

are long-faced and White-winged Scoters are 

nearly eider-sized and flash white in the wing. 

Eiders are possible — mixed in with the 

scooters is the occasional puddle duck. Greenwinged 

Teal, Pintail and the occasional diver. 

Lesser Scaup, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck or 

Long-tailed Duck. The market gunners knew 

the Long-tailed as the “South Southerly,” a 

phonetic rendering of the males yodeled call. 

Canvasbacks are rare and may be found 

at Maurice River Cove. Harlequin Ducks? The 

jetties at the mouth of the Cape May canal 

host the birds in some winters. Barnegat Light 

is the regional stronghold for this colorful, 

rough and tumble duck of rocky coasts. 

The Delaware Bay hosts thousands of 

Black Ducks. These hardy birds winter farther 

north than any puddle duck and they are a 

favorite of mine. Every morning I watch hundreds 

of birds head out to the Delaware Bay. 

Mergansers? Red-breasted Mergs forage just 

beyond the breakers. The Second Avenue Jetty 

in Cape May is a favored location. Common 

Mergansers? This large sawbill likes freshwater 

but can occasionally be seen in the 

Delaware Bay. Hooded Merganser? Common 

but restricted mostly to tidal creeks, where 

the males purring croak alerts their presence. 

Good places to observe sea ducks include 

the Avalon Sea Watch — visit the CMBO website 

for directions — and the Coral Avenue 

crossover in Cape May Point. The concrete 

ship also attracts a feathered following including 

Red-throated Loons and Cormorants. 

Dress warmly and bring binoculars 

— spotting scopes are ideal for waterfowl 

watching. Zoom eyepieces work best. When 

birds are back lit, crank up the magnification 

which reduces the field of view and turns silhouettes 

into birds with color and detail.
