Labour of love helps bring
comfort to children in hospital
FOR HENNY van Veen,
knitting toy dogs is a labour of
love that has been bringing joy
and calm to children having
ultrasounds at Christchurch
Hospital.
Knitted by the radiographic
assistant, the toys are given
to some of the hospital’s child
patients, aged between four and
10, to help them overcome their
fears.
For some children, an ultrasound
is a traumatic experience
and receiving a cuddly toy at the
end of it makes it a bit better, van
Veen said.
“We only get happy faces if
we give them a dog or one of
the little knitted teddies from
chaplaincy service,” she said.
Van Veen, of Burwood, was
inspired to start knitting about
18 months ago after seeing
the small teddies around the
hospital.
“I have never done it before
in my life and learned how by
watching YouTube.”
She usually knits in the evening
while listening to music or
watching television, “just to keep
my hands busy.”
It takes her four weeks to finish
a dog, as she only knits for
about an hour a day.
“And a lot of dogs are not to
my liking once finished so I
make another one.”
The patterns come from
library books or the internet,
and van Veen has made “just
about every breed of dog you can
name.”
Breeds she has knitted
include corgi, poodle, german
shepherd, jack russell, miniature
schnauzer, pug and border collie.
Petition demands action over palm tree
• By Bea Gooding
A PETITION demanding the
city council take action over a
potentially hazardous palm tree
in Shirley has garnered more
than 105 signatures.
Residents Jo Dickson and
Maurice Grant submitted the
petition to the city council over
their inaction to fix the broken
planter box the tree sits in for the
last six years.
The box, at the Palm Drive and
Laguna Gardens intersection,
has cracks along the side of it.
Residents are concerned that
the tree could fall onto nearby
pedestrians and cars at any moment.
But city council city streets
maintenance manager Mark
Pinner said the stability of the
tree was currently of no concern
as it did not present any immediate
danger to road users.
Dickson was told by the city
council that funding had been
set aside to fix the box in 2015,
but she said no work has been
done since.
“It’s just frustrating. A lot
of people have said if we were
on the other side of town, it
probably would’ve been fixed
already,” she said.
“It’s been put in the too-hard
basket. The palm tree is in good
condition, and they [council] say
it was the roots that caused it.”
Last year the Papanui-Innes
Community Board requested
council staff to consider a range
of options, such its removal,
repair or replacement.
However, the city council
decided to defer the decision on
the tree’s future to the urban
development and transport committee
due to the costs involved.
Residents said they did not
want the tree removed, or for
it to be placed directly into the
ground instead, like others in the
area. But council staff said this
would compromise the structural
integrity of the tree.
Dickson feared the city council
would delay work for another six
to eight years, which was why
INACTION: Clearbrook
Palms residents Jo
Dickson and Maurice
Grant started a
petition in a bid to get
the city council to fix a
potentially dangerous
palm tree, which has
been delayed for six
years.
PHOTOS: GEOFF
SLOAN
she started the petition in order
for them to take action within
the next few months.
Said Pinner: “As this feature is
unique to this location, council
were informed of the costs
which are between $20,000 and
$40,000.
“An arborist inspected the tree
and was judged to be in good
health. The planter box walls
are relatively low, and in a few
cases, rotated slightly due to root
growth.”
Dickson will be speaking more
about the issue at the Urban
Development and Transport
Committee’s meeting next
Wednesday.
Performing arts with a spotlight on mental health
• By Bea Gooding
DANCE STUDIOS and
performing arts centres across
the city are banding together and
using their craft in a bid to break
stigmas on mental health.
The 03’ Collective, by Zion
Dance Studios, Papanui, is a
mental health performing arts
showcase in collaboration with
Swarm Studios, The Compound
Studio, Levings School of Dance,
Anna-Lee School of Dance, Canterbury
Ballet, Common Ground
and Nathan Phillips Vocals.
Taking place next month in
The Aurora Centre at Burnside
High School, more than 150
performers will take centre stage
for hip-hop, contemporary, break
dancing, vocals and spoken
word.
Zion Studios dance and youth
development co-ordinator
Bronté Te Mete said the
showcase was an opportunity
for artists to use their talents
to address “a big issue in our
society.”
“With so many things being
cancelled, postponed and shutdown,
I decided to flip the script
and take it as an opportunity to
dive into something new,” she
said.
“Twenty twenty has been a
year of uncertainty, a year of
fear, change, self-discovery and
BREAKING STIGMA: Performers at Zion Dance Studios are teaming up with performing
arts and dance studios across the city to shine a light on mental health.
growth. What a perfect opportunity
to come together and showcase
our thoughts, challenges,
and achievements.”
Te Mete said it also offered an
opportunity for the dance and
performing arts community to
give back.
All profits from the show
will be donated to Youthline in
Christchurch, and to another
mental health organisation once
it was decided on.
The 03’ Collective was an idea
brought to life during a year that
“turned the world upside down.”
Te Mete said the theme was
inspired by this year’s events,
where there has been a push to
look out for your mental wellbeing
– something that could be
communicated through the art
forms.
“Performing art is something
creative and positive that we
can use to express ourselves. So
much can be portrayed through
movement, words and lyrics,”
she said.
“We aim to share our own
personal experiences to inspire
others to do the same, to show
people that they’re not alone and
to create a space where vulnerability
is welcomed.”
Putting a spotlight on the issue
was important for members at
the studio as mental health issues
were too often “ignored” or
“silenced.”
Said Te Mete: “We want to
break the stigma that being
vulnerable means being weak,
because it’s not. We need to
reinforce and normalise that
seeking help and admitting
you’re not okay is a sign of
strength.”
Collective can be found at
is the Council appointed
As a result of his trench warfare, the
Daniel Lechner-Page, owner of ITStuff[ed],
a computer repair, upgrade, web design and
migrated to New Zealand five years ago from
Austria. After completing his degree in Technology
and Business with further certifications as an
IT consultant and technician, his passion for
helping people led him to doing his Civil Service
as a paramedic and then completing a Diploma of
Nursing.
Feeling the call to travel, Daniel moved to Mexico
for 6 months teaching German as well as working for
a family as their Au Pair. He then travelled south to
Belize where he met his now wife and they travelled
together through Central and South America before
landing in his wife’s hometown of Christchurch.
Daniel has always loved the sea and dreamed of
living by the ocean. The idea of a community that
cares about each other and support and engage
locally has always appealed to him. Daniel and his
wife found this vibe in New Brighton and have never
looked back.
“New Brighton feels like home,” he says. “I’ve
always felt that if you look after your community,
your community looks after you and I love that my
son is growing up here. I am able to work with so
many local people and businesses.”
ITStuff[ed] specialises in home users, small
organisations. Their highly trained team of experts
have fine-tuned the skill of communicating computer
Some residents
on final warning
over bin misuse
More than 1450 residents have been
sent a letter warning them that their
yellow wheelie bin will be removed
unless they clean-up their recycling act.
Since the beginning of the year
Christchurch City Council has been
carrying out checks on the contents of
the yellow wheelie bins as part of its
effort to get people recycling right so that
less material ends up at the landfill.
Only clean cardboard, paper, tin and
aluminium cans, glass bottles and rigid
plastic bottles and containers marked
with the numbers 1, 2 or 5 should go
in the yellow wheelie bin. Those items
should be loose.
General rubbish can only go in the red
wheelie bin.
“Our preference is to educate people
rather than penalise them, but some
people have not responded to our
repeated efforts to inform them about
what items can be recycled,’’ says
Christchurch City Council Resource
Recovery Manager Ross Trotter.
“Our policy is to give people three
chances to correct their recycling. If they
don’t respond to the information, we give
them and it checks show they continue
to put general rubbish in their yellow
wheelie bin, then we will no longer offer
the service to them,’’ Mr Trotter says.
“To date we’ve sent out 1452 letters
informing people that they are on their
final warning and that further misuse of
the recycling bin will lead to their yellow
wheelie bin being removed.’’
In some cases, the warning letter has
been enough to prompt a change in
behaviour.
“We’ve actually ended up giving gold
stars for recycling to 56 of the residents
who were on a final warning because
they have stopped putting rubbish in the
bin and are now using it properly,’’ Mr
Trotter says.
“Unfortunately, in 180 cases we
have had to remove the bin because
the misuse continued, contaminating
the recycling of the residents who are
recycling correctly.’’
Those residents who have their bins
removed can get them back if they pay
a fee and sign an agreement stating they
will use it for its proper purpose.
“The majority of Christchurch
residents do make an effort to recycle
correctly and we are really thankful for
their support. Some are doing a fantastic
job - we’ve given out 39,396 gold stars for
excellent recycling,’’ Mr Trotter says.
“Others are trying but are still a little
confused about what can be recycled.
Of the 152,380 bins checked so far
this year, 92,416 have had a small level
of contamination in them. In those
cases, we’ve provided residents with an
information flyer about what can be
recycled.’’
Mr Trotter says anyone who is
uncertain about what belongs in the
yellow wheelie bin should download the
Christchurch Wheelie Bins app or look
on the Council’s website.
BANKNOTES and SCRAP GOLD in Christchurch.
The Stamp and Coin Exchange on Riccarton Road, next
to Westfields Mall, has been looking after Cantabrian
Collectors for many years. The Owner, Matt Power is
a born and bred Cantabrian and has over 40 years of
experience.
My whole focus is to look after the client and make sure
they get the best result for their Stamps, Coins, Banknotes
and Gold. It has been my passion since I was six years old. I
was milking cows to pay for my regular trips to the Stamp
and Coin events in Christchurch, on the bus from Rangiora, even at that
early age. With me, you will get genuine and honest advice on the value
of your collections and holdings.
Owner, Matt Power
Gold and Silver are at ALL TIME highs and the Stamp and Coin market is
actually stronger now than ever, in no small part due to Covid 19, as
people stay home and re discover their hobbies. So, now is a great time
to sell!
“The greatest thing about collecting,
is the people and the fun. At some
stage it is time to move on and
sell. Especially if the family has no
interest in those things. There are
still lots of passionate collectors out
there who will love the work you
have put in. So, why not get in touch
and pass those items to people who
really care?”
It is SIMPLE. Just give me a call,
