S disappointed as we
were with how things
panned out on Tuesday
night, we have no
choice other than to quickly put
it behind us and try to get back
to winning ways against Warrenpoint
Town this afternoon.
We played very well for long
spells against Glentoran, especially
in the first-half, but when
you don’t take your chances, you
always leave yourself open to
being punished at the other end
and that’s exactly what happened.
There were plenty of positives
we could take from the game but
the biggest positive of all would
have been a place in the County
Antrim Shield Final and we didn’t
achieve that, so we have to learn
our lesson and make sure that
we capitalise when we are on top
in games.
That’s exactly what happened
against Carrick Rangers last
week and it was frustrating that
we weren’t able to put the ball in
the net against the Glens when
we were clearly on top in the
game.
Another disappointment was the
loss of Aaron Donnelly to injury
and we really are having no luck
when it comes to things like that
at the minute.
On top of Donal Rocks and Calvin
McCurry being out with cruciate
injuries, Levi Ives is also back in

the boot after damaging his
metatarsal again, both Chris and
Ryan Curran have been carrying
little niggles recently, Conor
McMenamin has had a problem
with his hamstring and Garry

Those are the sorts of injuries
you expect to mount up over a
couple of months, not a few
weeks into the season.
Again, though, we’re not looking
for excuses because we have a
lot of talented young players
on the books who are itching
to be given their chance and I
think I’ve proved in my time here
that I am always willing to give
our up and coming
players an opportunity
to show what
they can do.
We saw what Warrenpoint
can do
just over a month
ago when we
played them
here in a friendly
so there might
be a bit of familiarity
with
one another,
but I believe
we have
kicked on
since then
and, judging
from their
results, you
could probably
say the
same about
Warrenpoint.
We know it
will be a battle
and it’s vital
we take our
chances
when they
come.

FTER an opening few
weeks that have delivered
plus and minus
points, Cliftonville
captain Chris Curran insists
there’s no value in reading too
much into things one way or
the other at this stage of the
season.
Abiding by a mantra that dictates
focus solely on the next
game while maintaining an outlook
that will neither let him get
too carried away with a good
result nor too downhearted by a
bad day at the office, the former
Ballinamallard United ace believes
the Reds are still finding
their feet as the campaign unfolds,
as has been evidenced by
results since the long-awaited
return of competitive action.
After expected County Antrim
Shield victories over both Knockbreda
and Dundela, Cliftonville
began their Danske Bank Premiership
programme with a dramatic
late win against Glentoran
at Solitude.
A narrow North Belfast Derby
defeat to Crusaders - when the
hosts capitalised on a rare moment
of indecision at the back -
was followed up by a patient but
rewarding triumph over Carrick
Rangers last Saturday ahead of

the Glens exacting revenge of
sorts by booking their place in
the County Antrim Shield Final in
midweek.
“It’s too early to be making any
predictions about the League or
the season as a whole,” insists
Curran, who nursed an injury
through a second-half substitute’s
appearance against Carrick
before catching the eye with
another typically committed
display on what was an ultimately
disappointing occasion
on Tuesday night.
“We’re just taking it one game at
a time and hopefully we can get
more points on the board
against Warrenpoint and build
on what we did in the Carrick
game.
“It was all doom and gloom after
the Crusaders game but it’s too
early to be reading too much
into it.”
One thing Curran is analysing,
though, is the challenge that will
undoubtedly be presented by
Warrenpoint Town this afternoon.
Having been appointed skipper
during Barry Gray’s spell as
Manager at Solitude, the 29-
year-old knows all too well
about how well-drilled and motivated
today’s opponents will be,
especially off the back of an
encouraging start to the season
that has already seen them
claim vital points against the
very teams that many observers
predict will be their main challengers
for survival in the Premiership,
even if the County Down
outfit are setting their sights
higher than involvement in another
nerve-jangling relegation
battle.
There’s familiarity, too, in the
fact that little more than a
month has passed since the
sides met in a friendly fixture
that saw the Point hit back from
2-0 down to bag a draw in the
aftermath of Michael McCrudden’s
double and Curran is expecting
another close contest in
the 90 minutes that lie ahead
today.
“They always make life very
difficult for us and Barry knows
us inside out,” he explains.
“It won’t be easy by any means
and Barry will be coming here
trying to prove a point I’m sure.
He’ll have Warrenpoint fired up
for it too, but we’ll look forward
to it.
“We should be going in with
confidence but it’s an old cliché -
we’re just taking it one game at
a time at the minute.”

AVING become accustomed
to relegation
drama of one hue or
another since first
reaching the Danske Bank
Premiership back in 2013, Warrenpoint
Town are striving for
the mediocrity of mid-table - or
higher!
Barry Gray’s charges had rescued
themselves from a seemingly
inevitable drop into the Bluefin
Sport Championship at the end of
last season long before football’s
coronavirus-enforced shutdown.
While basement side Institute
retained a mathematical hope of
catching the Milltown men, the
truth is that Warrenpoint were on
something of an upward curve
and, while that may or may not
have been enough to lift them
out of the play-off spot had the
campaign been allowed to run its
course, what is not up for question
is the Club’s ambition to
avoid another nail-biting finish
this time round.
Their start to the campaign
would certainly suggest they are
capable of doing just that, with
last week’s draw at home to
Portadown - when the hosts
finished with just nine players on
the park - coming hot on the
heels of a superb victory over
Dungannon Swifts which had in
itself been preceded by a narrow
loss at the hands of Crusaders.
A busy summer of wheeling and
dealing saw former Cliftonville
boss Gray add to a raft of January
recruits to build a squad that,
while not necessarily packed full
of household names in Irish
League circles, certainly carries
its fair share of experience from
back to front.
Perhaps the most well-known
addition was much-travelled
former Glentoran central defender
Gavin Peers, whose capture
was regarded as something of a
coup both inside and outside
Milltown.
Though a suspension incurred by
last week’s red card against the
Ports will rule him out of action
this afternoon, Peers’ know-how
in a backline playing in front of ex
-Drogheda United and Dundalk
goalkeeper Gabriel Sava could
well prove the difference in
Town’s chances of avoiding an
end-of-term slog in the division’s
lower reaches.
In the middle of the park, skipper
Fra McCaffrey - who previously
plied his trade with the Glens and
Ballymena United - is now back in
action following a hellish year
that first saw him struck down
with injury before his attempted
return last month was delayed by
a self-isolation alert on the Covid
app.
Up front, meanwhile, is the ever
reliable figure of Alan O’Sullivan,
whom Reds fans will well remember
thanks to his injury-time
winner when the sides met in
September 2018.
Though much has changed on the
playing front at the County Down
club in recent years, O’Sullivan
has remained one of the few
constants where personnel is
concerned and it is he whom boss
Gray and his assistant Gavin
Dykes will look to spearhead the
team’s charge away from the
drop zone and build on the good
work recorded immediately prior
to football’s shutdown in March.
Underdogs they may be, but
make so mistake that Warrenpoint
will be relishing the chance
to prove even more doubters
wrong today.
