SOMERSET COUNCIL’S
2019/20 ANNUAL REPORT
RELEASED
Somerset Regional Council has released its
2019/20 annual report.
Somerset Chief Executive Officer, Andrew
Johnson, said the 2019-2020 year has
presented many challenges.
“This year will go down in history books as a
year like no other. It has been a challenging
year with the Somerset region enduring
the ongoing effects of drought, devastating
bushfires, storm events and associated
infrastructure damage followed by the
impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic,”
Mr Johnson said.
“Council had a deficit of $1.3 million in the
2019/2020 financial year however, albeit
understandable, this was the right thing to
do to support the community.”
The annual report is available on Council’s
website: www.somerset.qld.gov.au.
IMPROVEMENTS TO
KILCOY AQUATIC CENTRE
CONFIRMED
Somerset Regional Council will contract a
Kilcoy business to undertake immediate
improvement works to the Kilcoy Aquatic
Centre.
Last month it was identified that the sealing
of the pool had become hazardous and
immediate repairs were needed to prevent
further damage to the pool shell and tiling.
SOMERSET LAND
RATIONALISATION
PROGRAM
Somerset Regional Council will reduce
its land holdings by a further seven lots
following a Council decision.
Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the changes
were to reduce costs.
“We are focused on managing avoidable
costs like State government levies and
other costs of freehold land ownership,” Cr
Lehmann said.
“We have sold several freehold titles in recent
years, particularly in rural areas where State
law prevents subdivision but Council decided
to not try and sell any of these seven blocks
because of flooding and access issues.”
The Council also made policy changes to
save on procurement costs.
SOMERSET COUNCIL’S
CYBER SECURITY REVIEW
Somerset Regional Council has adopted a
cyber security policy in response to a review
by consultants Crowe.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said
the policy was a proactive step towards
managing cyber risks.
“Like businesses and organisations
everywhere, it is an unfortunate part of life
that we all need to protect our systems to
keep out literally thousands of cyber-attacks,”
Cr Lehmann said.
“We are aware of another council being the
subject of a successful ransomware attack
just this month.
“Our new policy will assist in preventing a
similar successful ransom attack here.”
COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE
Queensland kids will have
more access to shade thanks to
funding from the Queensland
Government.
The 2020-2021 funding round of SunSmart
Shade Creation Initiative is closing soon.
Eligible Queensland organisations should not
miss this opportunity to apply for funding for
extra shade.
The initiative, led by Queensland Government
and Cancer Council Queensland, provides
80% funding with a maximum of $2000
for portable shade and up to $30,000
for permanent shade, for not-for-profit
organisations that cater to children 0-18 years.
Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris
McMillan urges eligible schools, sporting
clubs, childcare centres and community
groups to apply for the SunSmart Shade
Creation Initiative.
“We’re proud to partner with Queensland
Government to help provide shade and
improve the sun safety of Queensland kids,”
Ms McMillan said.
“Protecting your skin from the sun and other
forms of UV exposure is important at any age,
but sun protection is especially important
during childhood and adolescence.
“Skin damage can occur in as little as 10
minutes if you’re outdoors without sun
protection. Creating more shady spaces in
settings where young Queenslanders spend a
large portion of the day will help reduce their
exposure and skin cancer risk.”
The Mackay Brothers Football Club is a junior
sporting club that received funding for shade
through the 2019-2020 SunSmart Shade
Creation Initiative.
Vice President Gene Paterson says their
decision to apply for funding for shade was
driven by the hot Queensland sun and the
impact it had on community attendance to
games.
“Prior to the construction of the roof over the
deck, the players and supporters (parents,
grandparents, siblings) were exposed to
the tropical sun for most of the day,” said Mr
Paterson.
“People can now come early in the day and
sit on the deck in the shade and stay all day,
whereas in the past if you came to an Under
19’s game at 10 am, because of the exposure
to the sun (which does not go behind the
Clubhouse until after 2 pm) you would be
wanting to go home.”
Mr Paterson explained that the passing of
valued club members and supporters from
cancer also motivated their application for
better shade.
“If you live in North Queensland you become
conscious of skin cancer and its effects on
families.”
The comfort and safety of the Mackay Brothers
Football Club community has vastly improved
since the construction of permanent shade
earlier this year.
“The construction of permanent shade with
the support of Cancer Council Queensland
and Queensland Government, keeps people
out of the sun, avoids the necessity of putting
up and taking down tents and provides more
room and comfort for everyone.”
Applications for this round of the 2020-2021
SunSmart Shade Creation Initiative close
at 5pm on November 9, 2020. To apply,
complete the online application form on the
A brazen fuel thief has targeted
a cherished store in a small-town
community, inciting anger from
owners and customers alike.
The theft took place on Monday, October 26,
at the Blue Teapot corner store on the main
street of Coominya.
After driving past the store and parking further
along the road, the thief approached the
bowser, filled up a container with fuel, then
ran back to his car and drove away without
paying.
Fortunately the thief and his vehicle were
caught on CCTV, and images and video have
already been distributed to authorities, and
the local community.
Unfortunately, the number plate of the vehicle
is difficult to discern. Blue Teapot owners
expressed their disdain for the theft.
“This is why small family business go broke
or stop doing fuel, because people like this
think they have the right to take what doesn't
belong to them,” they said.
Community members have been enraged
by the incident, and have vowed to keep an
eye out for the car and its driver, with some
threatening violence or vandalism against the
thief and his car. As with any crime, anyone
with information is urged to contact police,
and should not take matters into their own
hands.
THE SOMERSET - Wednesday November 4, 2020 - Page 2
Written by John Somerset,
youngest child of Arthur and
Dorothy Somerset
Born 30 May 1926 at Caboonbah
Homestead, Esk Kilcoy Road,
Arthur was the eldest child of
Rollo and Glory (nee Turner)
Somerset and grandson of Henry
Plantagenet Somerset (HP) after
whom the dam and region is
named.
Arthur (my father) lived a long, fruitful, and
content life, passing away on 15th October
2020 aged 94 years, just ten months after
the passing of his wife (my mother) Dorothy
Somerset.
Arthur was originally home-schooled at
Caboonbah before attending Mt Beppo
school to which he rode his pony to and
from, with a gallop on the way home. HP
made his stirrups and bridle. His memories of
growing up at Caboonbah include making a
cup of tea with his father for the awakening
family members in the house and receiving a
bullseye lolly from HP, which he used to keep
in a jar on his bedside table, as a reward for
the morning cuppa. Arthur maintained this
early morning tea tradition for his entire life.
I recall studying at 4am and Dad bringing me
tea and toast at about 5.30am.
Rollo (Arthur’s father) passed away when
Dad was 10 years old after which the family
moved to Redcliffe in Brisbane. Arthur
attended school at Humpybong State School
and completed his senior schooling at The
Southport School with fond memories of
rugby, rowing and swimming across the
Narang river to Macintosh Island, now one of
the most expensive pieces of real estate on
the Gold Coast.
After finishing school in 1942 he worked for
Dalgety’s stock and station agency filling and
dispatch station supply orders – a job that
he loved. Dad joined the navy in 1943 (aged
18 years) and saw active service in the South
Pacific. Up until his death, Dad was an active
member of the Corvette (ship) association
and we were honoured to have high level
navy officers and a bugler attend his funeral
including conducting a poppy ceremony.
After the war Arthur married Dorothy Harrison
and working in the family automotive
business for the next 30 years while raising
his family initially at Redcliffe, but for 46 years
at our Aspley home. Mum was a city girl and
Dad a country lad. In 2012 Arthur realised his
long-awaited dream of a country life, living in
a purpose built home co-joined to his eldest
son Rollo’s home near Stanthorpe.
Dad worked hard but always had
time to invest in his children’s and
grandchildren’s activities including
he and Mum travelling around the
UK for a period while visiting his
daughter Andrea who was living
there at the time, and visiting his
son Rollo in PNG and USA when
he was living abroad. I have many
fond childhood memories including
the regular trips to the Caboonbah
Church, Mt Beppo Caboonbah road,
to maintain the church property and
grounds, followed by a family picnic.
This tradition continues as I am
currently president of the Caboonbah
Undenominational Church Inc. and
we have our annual service/open
day coming up at 11am Saturday
21 st November 2020. All community
members are welcome subject
to Covid-19 number restrictions.
We also plan to live stream the
service through the Caboonbah
Undenominal Church facebook page.
I am fortunate to have had a wonderful life
teacher in Dad and appreciate many do not
have this luxury. But Arthur lost his father at
aged 10 years and was mentored by others in
the family, perhaps teaching him one of the
most important lessons that he passed on
to us of working with the circumstances as
presented.
His grandfather has a plaque at Caboonbah
Undenominational Church saying “write me
as a man who loved his fellow man” which is
equally true for Arthur. Arthur demonstrated
servant leadership throughout his life, was
a dedicated and resourceful person, very
content with life. Arthur and Dorothy’s ashes
will eventually be placed in the Caboonbah
cemetery alongside other family members.
Thankyou Arthur/Dad for a job well done.
Show societies in Rosewood and
Marburg will receive a share of
more than $2.1 million from the
Queensland Government’s Show
Societies Grants Program, to help
conduct their annual show.
Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden said
that with many shows having to be cancelled
in 2020 due to the pandemic, their return
would give local communities a much-needed
lift.
“The local show is such an important part of
the fabric of our regions, towns and cities,
and offer a terrific opportunity for locals
to showcase their produce, livestock and
artisanship,” he said.
Mr Madden said it was important to recognise
that the shows give local economies a boost.
Across the region, the grants will assist
Show Societies including:
• Marburg & Dist A&I Assn - $8,656
• Rosewood A&H (Show) Assn - $7,025
• Ipswich Show Society - $27,535
The Show Societies Grants Program provides
financial support for operating costs associated
with conducting annual agricultural shows,
and costs towards the construction and
maintenance of showground assets.
Additionally, Show Societies who own their
grounds may use up to 50 per cent of their
funding towards new infrastructure works
that meet the required timeframe and
program objectives.
The 2020-21 Show Societies Grants Program
allocations range from just over $6,000
for small show societies up to more than
$151,000 for the Royal National Agricultural
and Industrial Association of Queensland to
conduct the Ekka.
THANK-YOU FROM DEB
JIM MADDEN’S POST ELECTION STATEMENT
“It is a great honour and a privilege to be
elected for a fourth term as the Member for
Nanango,” Mrs Frecklington said.
“I am very humbled and sincerely thank the
community for putting their faith in me. I
took on this role to make a difference in our
regional areas, and I will continue to fight for
our fair share in the Nanango Electorate.
“There is so much opportunity right here, but
it needs backing with better roads, better
health services and less red and green tape for
our primary producers and small business.
“This is what I’ll be working to achieve for
our Nanango Electorate communities – right
across the South Burnett, Somerset, northern
Toowoomba, Cherbourg and western Gympie
areas.
“I’ll continue to work hard each and every day
because I love this area, and the people who
NATHAN GREAVES
The Somerset Regional Council
have been forced to fork out
thousands in recent weeks to
cover the cost of vandalism
committed in late September.
As has become far too familiar in the region in
recent months, public toilets were once again
the prime targets out the callous vandals,
with Kilcoy’s Anzac Park toilets being attacked
twice, on September 16 and 28.
Damages included the toilet seat in the
disabled bathroom being broken, as well as a
stainless steel rubbish bag holder.
Also reported on September 28 was a
stainless steel toilet seat being broken at the
of the Mt Crosby Road Warrego Highway
Interchange and the $650,000 synthetic
Soccer Pitch at Ipswich State High.
I have enjoyed serving on various
Parliamentary Committees and as the
Government’s representative on the Rural
Drought and Debt Taskforce and Chair of the
Western Queensland Community Forum.
In the 57th Queensland Parliament I am
pleased to serve in any capacity that the
Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, can make
best use of my skills as a lawyer, agronomist,
small business owner and a former Local
Government Councillor.
Thank you to the residents of Ipswich West for
placing your trust in me, I won’t them down.
Minden Village Toilets, and a toilet seat being
stolen from the Coach Stop toilets in Kilcoy.
Councillor Sean Choat expressed his
exasperation at the ongoing issue.
“I can’t believe that people have nothing
better to do than damage a public lavatory,”
he said.
“It’s ridiculous. To steal a toilet seat? It’s a sad
sign of the times.”
The total cost to ratepayers for repairing the
vandalism damages caused in September
was $2,242.
Fernvale’s expanding health
services are continuing to grow
with STAR Radiology’s new
addition, the Ultra Low Dose
Computer Tomography (CT)
machine.
STAR Radiology in Fernvale is now a full
comprehensive radiology centre providing
all general x-ray, dental (OPG), Ultrasound as
well as Interventional ultrasound (cortisone
injections) and Ultra Low Dose CT.
Dr. Andrew Timbs the owner of STAR Radiology
says “The new ultra low dose CT technology
is amazing. It allows us to perform many CT
scans for the equivalent does to a standard
x-ray. It is the safest CT scan available”.
STAR Radiology has been in Fernvale for 2
years now and has been striving to increase
their medical radiology services continuously.
Dr. Timbs says “It has been a tough two years
but it is very satisfying to finally have a full
service radiology centre for the community.
Everyone continually mentions how much
they dislike having to travel for radiology
services into Ipswich or Gatton. There are
very few radiology services we are unable to
do. It is very gratifying to know that everyone
no longer needs to travel and can get their
radiology services locally”.
A little known fact with radiology referral
forms is that it is the patients choice of what
centre they attend. It does not matter what
referral form you receive from the doctor it is
your choice what centre you visit. Dr. Timbs
says “This is a very important point for the
public to be aware of. Most doctors in the area
still for some reason do not use our referral
forms regularly and do not make the patient
aware that there is a local imaging centre. This
creates significant confusion for the patients
as most believe they need to attend that
centre on the referral form. We have patients
on a daily basis complaining to us that their
doctor has been sending them to Ipswich and
Gatton for the past two years and they did not
know we where in Fernvale.” This makes it an
easy decision to support a local business with
the added benefit that you no longer need
to travel the 20-30 minutes to Ipswich and
Gatton and fight the traffic, parking and wait
times.
Dr. Timbs says “The technology we use for
our reporting is the leading in the industry.
Doctors have direct access to their images as
soon as the procedure had been completed
and all our reports are completed within 24
hours, most times far quicker. If an urgent
report is required we can complete it in a
matter of hours.”
Fernvale and the surrounding areas continue
to grow and having adequate medical
services is critical. Let's spread the word
and support our local businesses so we can
continue to have these amazing service in our
community.
goes back to a time when her mother’s
family owned a farm on Cressbrook Creek
in the 1940’s. In the early 1980’s, her family
moved to a farm on Fulham Road, outside of
Toogoolawah and her brother still lives and
works in the Valley.
“I am so happy to be part of the Heritage
Festival. Many times my dad and I would
spend time, driving and exploring The
Brisbane Valley, and it’s beauty never ceases
to amaze me” Barbara said.
For this performance a string quintet will be
playing.
NATHAN GREAVES
For almost two decades, residents
living near a Hazeldean property
have had to deal with an unsightly,
unsafe house on their doorsteps,
and now they’ve finally had
enough.
In September of this year, a petition was
received by the Somerset Regional Council,
with twenty signatories demanding that
council take action over building issues at 37
Davis Court, Hazeldean.
The property in question has already been on
council’s radar, since before the councils were
amalgamated.
When discussing the issue at last week’s
council meeting, Director of Planning and
Development Luke Hannan said Show Cause
and Enforcement notices had been issued to
A Deb Frecklington LNP
Government will reduce electricity
costs to support irrigators and
supercharge regional economies.
LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said ending
Labor’s high electricity prices would increase
production and create more secure jobs for
Queenslanders.
“Within the first 100 day of forming
government the LNP will task the Productivity
Commission to develop a new set of modern
and affordable agricultural tariffs to reduce
the skyrocketing cost of electricity,” Ms
Frecklington said.
“The Commission will overhaul the current
system and introduce a new demand-based
tariff structure that rewards productivity and
efficiency.
“This is all part of the LNP’s ambitious food
and jobs security plan, which has a goal of
increasing the value of agricultural production
by 2035, from $18 billion to $30 billion and
then doubling it to $60 billion by 2045.
“The centre piece of this bold plan is the
the property owner in the past.
“There is a significant history of compliance
matters at this property,” he said.
The fiasco began in October of 2002, when the
Kilcoy Shire Council gave a building approval,
with a condition that the work be completed
in six months.
It wasn’t.
Many complaints were received from
neighbours regarding the unfinished works,
including substandard construction and
plumbing work.
In January 2009, the Somerset Regional
Council approved a new development to add
a veranda and storeroom to the property,
which was intended to resolve the existing
building matters.
This approval had a condition that work be
completed within two years, and once again
this condition was not met.
Residents in the area raised numerous issues
in their petition, providing photographic
delivery of water infrastructure which includes
the drought-busting New Bradfield Scheme
and more dam projects throughout the state.
“We have a plan to grow agriculture in
Queensland, including a commitment to
reduce the costs of critical inputs and end
bad regulations that impact the profitability,
productivity and ultimately jobs throughout
the entire agricultural supply chain.”
LNP Shadow Minister for Agricultural Industry
Development Tony Perrett said cheaper
electricity for farmers is in addition to slashing
nearly 20 per cent off the price of water
for Queensland’s 5,000 Sunwater irrigation
customers from 1 July 2021.
“By getting the basics right, an LNP
Government will secure Queensland’s food
and fibre first, backing local farmers and
supporting local jobs,” Mr Perrett said.
“Labor’s plan for tariffs will result in even high
price spikes and even more businesses pulling
the plug.
“The LNP knows that modern agricultural
businesses have a wide variety of needs and
demands when it comes to electricity that
cannot be solved with a blanket tariff.
evidence to confirm a lack of safety rails on
the stairs, and boarded-up, broken windows
with pieces of broken glass still visible in the
frames.
They also raised concerns about rubbish
strewn on the property posing safety and
fire hazards, the health issues associated
with a lack of working sewerage, and that the
property owner was operating a business out
of the unsafe house.
Councillor Jason Wendt expressed his
sympathy for the plight of residents, but
noted that the council were limited by how
they could take action.
“Everyone’s got someone like this living near
them,” he said.
“As frustrating as it is for residents, we have a
process we have to follow. We can’t just go in
and clean it up for them.”
Council officers have been corresponding
with the owner of the property in question,
and some progress is beginning to be made.
“That is why we will deliver a complete
overhaul to our farmers’ tariffs to make them
cheaper.
“The Commission will work with industry to
achieve an outcome that delivers upon the
LNP’s vision to more than double agriculture
by 2035.
“This is not about throwing out the progress
already made by industry and farmers but
building upon it with a new set of priorities
based on increasing production, not gauging
users.
“The LNP is the only party with a
comprehensive plan for rural and regional
Queensland to grow agricultural production
and secure the thousands of jobs that comes
with them.
“The LNP will build a stronger economy and
get Queensland working again.”
The LNP has also committed to lowering
electricity costs for Queensland manufacturers
by around 20% through a $493 million
community service obligation that will deliver
millions in savings to businesses through the
agricultural supply chain.
NATHAN GREAVES
A truck driver’s hopes to bring
their B-double home have been
dashed, with their application for
a new route being shot down by
the Somerset Regional Council.
The owner submitted a request to establish
a new B-double route from their property
on Edinburgh Drive at Mount Hallen to the
existing B-double route along Gatton-Esk
Road, allowing them to bring the truck back
home on some evenings and weekends.
The application was refused by the council at
their meeting last week, due to the disruption
it would cause to neighbouring and nearby
properties in terms of dust, noise, and
vibrations.
“I like development, I like people coming to
the area, but looking at this, it’s going to be a
very disruptive route,” Councillor Jason Wendt
said.
“If they were surrounded by 50-acre Lots,
that’d be one thing, but there’s a lot of
residents who would be impacted.”
A similar request was submitted by another
property owner on the same road back in
March of 2017, which was also rejected by the
council.
A massive expansion is set to
get underway at the Kilcoy State
High School in the near future,
following the approval of a
development application by the
Somerset Regional Council.
The school’s existing basketball court building
will be redeveloped into a multi-purpose hall,
with the planned new additions to include a
performance stage, changing rooms, toilets,
extended storage space, and a mezzanine
control room.
Councillors were in full support of the plan,
expressing that it was long overdue, given
the school’s continued growth in recent years.
“This represents much-needed development
for the school,” Cr Cheryl Gaedtke said.
“The school’s need for growth was identified
some years ago, but lacked funding support
at the time. It’s great to see this finally go
ahead.”
Cr Seant Choat voiced his agreement, but
noted the approval had come too late for this
year’s graduating class.
“It’s sad, in a way, that this couldn’t be there
for this year’s Year 12’s, as they haven’t had
the best year a senior student could hope for,”
he said.
A date has yet to be set for when work will
begin on the development.
NATHAN GREAVES
Somerset residents have reached
their breaking point following yet
another weekend of damage and
disruption at local waterways and
parklands.
Since lockdown and travel restrictions were
relaxed earlier in the year, there has been a
rise in visitors to areas such as the D’Aguilar
National Park, Wivenhoe Dam, and Savages
Crossing, and thought the tourism is a boon
to the region, some visitors are doing more
harm than good, and residents caught up in
the problems have had enough.
“Myself and a few other local property owners
have observed a significant level of antisocial
behaviour from people either coming into or
from our region,” landowner Grant Neilson
said.
“Places like Savages Crossing, Twin bridges
and the D'Aguilar National Park are continually
being treated in a disrespectful way by various
people.”
Local councillors have insisted discussions are
underway with key stakeholders to manage
these problems, but this isn’t happening
quickly enough, in the view of some residents.
In response to the growing problem, Mr
Neilson launched a public Facebook group –
Clean Up Somerset Waterways and Parklands
– for residents to discuss their views and
suggestions for dealing with the issue.
The page was launched on Sunday, October
25, and managed to attract more than two
hundred members in two days, with numbers
continuing to grow in the time since.
Mr Neilson stressed that the point of the
group wasn’t to deter tourism, but to improve
conditions for tourists doing the right
thing, and residents paying the price for the
misbehaviour of others.
“This is NOT an anti 4-wheel drive, anti dirt
bike, or anti camping group,” he said.
“We want people to have fun, but we also want
people to do so in a legal and safe manner, as
well as do so in a way that allows everyone to
enjoy our beautiful region.”
Members of the group have identified a
variety of issues plaguing the region, the
vast majority of which stem from people
deliberately ignoring signs in the impacted
areas.
Savages Crossing and nearby Twin Bridges
were identified as being main problem areas,
with repeated instances of 4-wheel drives
illegally driving through the water at the
crossing, and even boats and jet-skis using
the river further upstream.
This risks the lives of swimmers and kayakers
who use the water, and also causes damage to
the local environment and ecosystem, which
according to locals, is a habitat and breeding
area for protected species such as the lungfish.
There are also ongoing issues with hoons
and dirt bikers damaging roads and trails in
the area, and illegal campers leaving rubbish
and human waste in these areas, as well as
breaking fences and trespassing on nearby
properties to steal firewood.
Mr Neilson called on more locals to
get involved with the group, and start
brainstorming practical ideas to help address
the issues.
He also asked for residents to help collect
evidence in their local areas to help prove
the extent of the issue, by photographing
damaged areas, and tracking down websites
and posts that encourage the illegal
behaviour.
“We are interested in finding a solution in
order to make our region more family friendly,
and rid the region of these antisocial people
who show no care or respect for the region or
those that live here,” he said.
“If you have contacts in government
departments, know local councillors or people
that can help us find a common solution...
please invite them to this group.
MURPHY’S PUB
Two men were sitting next to each
other at Murphy’s Pub in London.
After awhile, one bloke looks at the
other and says, ‘I can’t help but think,
from listening to you, that you’re from
Ireland’
The other bloke responds proudly,
‘Yes, that I am!’
The first one says, ‘So am I! And where
about from Ireland might you be?’
The other bloke answers, ‘I’m from
Dublin’
The first one responds, ‘So am I!’
‘Mother, Mary and begora. And what
street did you live on in Dublin?’
The first one says, ‘A lovely little area it
was. I lived on McCleary Street in the
old central part of town.’
‘Faith, it’s a small world. So did I! And
what school did you go to?’
The first guy answers, ‘ Well now, I
went to St Mary’s, of course.’
The other bloke gets really excited
and says ‘And so did I. Tell me, what
Esk & District Junior Cricket
KILCOY GOLF
A home game on Saturday at Toogoolawah State school for the Tigers.
This time against Forest Hill.
The Tigers won the toss and chose to bat first.
Dean and Nate opened the batting and got the innings off to a good start scoring 9 and 8
respectively.
Isaac came in at third and top scored with another good innings of 19 including one six. Brodie
added to the tally with a valuable 10 runs and Jai followed up with 7.
The team had three players unavailable this week so Carter and Samuel from Esk and District
one came across to help out.
Carter scored a well played 13 and Samuel added to that with 7.
The Forest Hill bowling and fielding was pretty good and made runs hard to get.
After a well-earned drinks break it was the Tigers turn to bowl.
After a few loose overs the Tigers bowlers started to get their line. Dean and Nate took 1 wicket
each and Isaak did well taking 3 wickets.
Brodie added to the tally taking 1 wicket and Jai , Carter and Samuel did well each taking 2
wickets.
Fielding by the Tigers was very good with everyone backing up and encouraging the bowler.
The under 10s games go on a points scored and wickets lost format so a team may score more
runs than the other but if they lose more wickets they can still lose the match.
So in the end it was a win for the Tigers on their home ground.
Esk and District 7/73
Forest Hill 22/113.
Player of the match was Jai and he will be Captain next week.
A great effort by the team with only seven players on the day.
Thanks to Carter and Samuel for helping out and also to Forest Hill for giving us a player to
help in the field.
Thanks also to all parents who helped on the day scoring, setting up and getting the kids
organised.
Esk1 travelled to the scenic Glenore Grove cricket oval on Saturday.
Philippa was captain and after the toss we were sent into Bat in windy conditions.
Our Openers Ben (18) and Louis (36) had us off to a great start making the most of the fast
outfield hitting many boundaries.
Holly was next in and she continued her good form with the bat to make an impressive
29 runs. Pip (22) and Grace (36) made their highest ever scores hitting eleven boundaries
between them. Girl Power!
Millie was next in and she powered to 26 with lots of running between the wickets. Paul
(5) was our finisher and made sure our total 5/172 (avg 34.4) was maintained by holding his
wicket with great defence. Pauls running between wickets with Millie’s encouragment was
very impressive.
Bowling was never going to be easy bowling into the extreme wind. Our change of inning talk
revolved around getting the ball up on the batsmen’s toes and creating pressure with great
fielding. Ben, our opening bowler, had a dream start clean pitching the ball up as discussed
and bowling the batsmen with the very first ball of our innings! The Tigers were up and about
with the chat in the field prominent all day. Ben finished the day with outstanding figures of
3/11. Millie chipped in with1/16. Louis was hard to score against as always with 1/5. Pauls
bowling has improved greatly and did the team job of keeping the score down with some
tight bowling. Pip bowled her best spell of the season to capture 2/16. Grace was sending
them down quick and took 1/13. Holly bowled with great control and accuracy to capture
her best ever figures of 2/4. This great bowling was backed up with even better fielding with 3
runouts and Louis taking a great catch.
Our team is playing with great spirit and sportsmenship which is great to see.
This dominant performance left Glenore Grove at 12/83 (avg 6.92) thus the mighty Tigers
season marches on. Thank you to Sue for scoring and the parents for warming the kids up and
having them ready to go.
A special thankyou to Carter and Sam for playing for ESK2 this week to balance up the playing
numbers. We look forward to welcoming you back this week in the local derby playing against
our club partners Esk2 in Toogoolawah.
We would love to see a big crowd come on down and watch these little kids playing cricket.
Bring down your picnic chair and enjoy a relaxing morning in the fresh air. We have shade
marquees for the spectators or you may choose to sit under the beautiful gum trees (keeping
in mind social distancing regulations).
We are running a raffle on the day to support our club. There will be a BBQ for players at the
conclusion of the game at around 11.30am.
A truck driver’s hopes to bring
their B-double home have been
dashed, with their application for
a new route being shot down by
the Somerset Regional Council.
The application was refused by the council at
their meeting last week, due to the disruption
it would cause to neighbouring and nearby
properties in terms of dust, noise, and
vibrations.
“I like development, I like people coming to
the area, but looking at this, it’s going to be a
very disruptive route,” Councillor Jason Wendt
said.
“If they were surrounded by 50-acre Lots,
that’d be one thing, but there’s a lot of
residents who would be impacted.”
A similar request was submitted by another
property owner on the same road back in
March of 2017, which was also rejected by the
The owner submitted a request to establish
a new B-double route from their property
on Edinburgh Drive at Mount Hallen to the
existing B-double route along Gatton-Esk
Road, allowing them to bring the truck back
home on some evenings and weekends.
