Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
At least the election was uneventful
and is in no way going to devolve into
a series of prolonged legal battles
and screaming head punditry until
January. But 2020 being what it is,
there really was no other possible outcome.
I’m just super-glad that all those Biden voter
block parties are incredibly safe, but going to
church or saying goodbye to a loved one is still
volcanically deadly. Great job, everyone!
This is going to end up making Bush v
Gore look like Election. (If you don’t get the
reference, check out the excellent 1999 film
starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew
Broderick, but brace yourselves for the first
five seconds.)
I try to be as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed
as possible when I write to you on these glorious
Sunday mornings, but I spent most of
last week in bed with the flu, emerging long
enough to work my TNT gigs on Friday and
Saturday, during which I cultivated a persistent
migraine, blurring my vision and causing
explosions of stars when I look left, right, up or
down. At least there was no Eagles game this
week. This is a long-winded way of saying — I
don’t care if you enjoy the column this week, all
I want is two Tylenol and a bed.
For those wondering, yes, I did have a
Covid-19 test. Multiple Covid-19 tests. And
one flu test. They all consisted of some nice
young lady jabbing a Q-tip into my brain pan
and calling 15 minutes later to say I’m negative.
All very pleasant. With each poke I feel
less smart and think less good cuz poking.
Sniff. (And why does everything taste like
Styrofoam?)
As such, since I didn’t do much this week,
so get ready for 20 paragraphs of recycled
jokes and bits I wrote six months ago but never
found room for! It’s like your favorite band’s
greatest hits album or a clip show from your
favorite TV show except none of it is any good.
So let’s start with a retraction.
Retraction of the Week: In a fog of Nyquil
and flu sweats, last week I mistakenly included
a joke about the Netflix show, The Haunting of
Bly Manor. The joke was… okay, but was based
only on my impressions of the show; trailers,
reviews, etc. I didn’t start watching it until
Wednesday and it was… okay. Not as good as
the first installment, The Haunting of Hill House,
not as bad as, say, Hubie Halloween.
‘Atta Guy of the Week Part 1: Continuing
the saga of Terry’s Flat Tires, I pulled into Cape
Harbor Shell during delivery on Thursday
morning and asked owner/operator Jerry
Mancuso if I could bring the Highlander back
in a couple hours to plug my slow-leaking tire.
In true mechanic fashion he said, “Pull her in
and we’ll do it right now, it’ll take 10-15 min-
wise men say
only fools rush in
but i can’t help falling in malt with you.
utes.” Thirty minutes later I pulled
out with the confidence that only
a fresh tire plug can give you and
continued my route.
‘Atta Guy of the Week Part 2:
From the aforementioned Cape
Harbor Shell, my man Andrew
“Footer” Foote, who asked the
magic question; “Are you slimming
down?” I always liked him.
For the record, I deliver 100%
of Exit Zero magazine with a blue
cover. I deliver about 65% of the
red ones.
So I notice it’s November,
which is known for not shaving
and not having sex. One of those
things I can do, one of those things
I can do for a very long time.
Song of the Week: “I don’t
Know What it Is” by Rufus
Wainwright. Kind of Beatle-y,
kind of Rufus Wainwright-y.
You’ll know it when you hear it.
It may seem like I talk about
El Pueblo Taqueria (Ruben
Nunez) and Antojos (Jehovanny
Nunez) in North Cape May a lot,
but it’s only because I’m angling
for a free taco or smoothie. It’s
also because these excellent, family-run
businesses deserve your
support. I may also owe them
some money…
Why is it when I drive to the
gym to do my hour of cardio that
I get so upset if I have to park far
away from the door?
After months ( years?) of
scrolling past Mack Weldon ads
on my Facebook, last week they
were pushing what looked like
some pretty comfortable sweatpants.
As I lack sweatpants at
this time, I thought I’d click in
and check out what they have.
And they have sweatpants. $78
sweatpants. I hope to one day be
wealthy enough to spend $78 on
sweatpants.
My eldest son Owen this
week came out as anti-Pit Bull.
The animal and the rapper.
I finally watched Cats recently,
and it was just as awful as I was
expecting, but it was also kind of
endearing. It’s like they knew they
were making a movie for the 600
people on Earth who would enjoy
it. There’s something noble in
that. Also, I’ve been a theater guy
for over 30 years and the father
to a dance kid for 17 and the Ian
McKellen scene in Cats is the gayest
shit I’ve ever seen...
One of the great, under-theradar
shows on TV right now is
the Epix adaptation of Get Shorty.
It’s loosely based on the Elmore
Leonard novel and even less so on
the 1995 John Travolta film. Ray
Romano is perfect as the loser
movie producer, but Irish actor
Chris O’Dowd walks away with
the show. If he seems familiar it’s
because he’s been tending bar at
Exit Zero Filling Station disguised
as Lawrence Green.
Every time I use the restroom
at EZFS I like to take a moment to
look around at all the old timey
photos and, through a mist of
nostalgia, wonder, “How long
have these people been dead?”
I, for one, am stunned that
here has not been an outbreak
of bank robberies since we’ve all
been forced to wear masks since
March. (Hey! You! Don’t steal my
idea…)
Message from Charlie the
Dog: My tail is furry and my feets
are a tippy-tappin. So many rabbits.
14/10. Would dog again.
So… there you go. Another
week in the books. Don’t forget
to join us on Saturday, December
5, aka Not the West Cape May
Christmas Parade, for music
inside and out with TNT, Nancy
Malcun and Camille Peruto, and
New year’s Eve for an acoustic
tribute to The Eagles, Neil
Diamond and Bruce Springsteen.
Oh, and something about a winter
carnival. More next week.
How To Be a Good Restaurant
that restaurants are likely operating
below usual staffing numbers.
How To Be a Bad Restaurant
CURBSIDE SERVICE AVAILABLE

The Theater Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
Sure, we all miss theater but how
about those who long for the lights
of Broadway? Cape May Stage has
plenty to give you the ix you need
until everything opens back up. Visit
www.capemaystage.org to learn more about
any of these productions.
Adam Pascal has had a long and decorated
career on Broadway. In the 90s, he got
his start in the original production of Rent.
He went on to play in Elton John’s Aida and
most recently he played Shakespeare in the hit
Something Rotten.
But how did Adam get his start? What
song did he perform for his very irst Broadway
audition? Well, why would you want to hear
that from me? Why not hear it from Adam
himsel? In an exclusive “bedroom” performance
from Adam, exclusively created for
Cape May Stage, he provides amazing insights
into his early career. Of course, this is complete
with performances from the singer/
musician.
In the online performance, Adam Pascal:
So Far… A Musical Retrospective prepare to be
serenaded by the high energ Pascal. You’ll be
surprised by the warm biography of a young
man apprehensive about his audition for a
new musical called Rent. As to the song he
picks, let him tell you which one and how the
whole experience went. You will feel closer to
getting back to the Big Apple to catch a show.
The online readings from Cape May Stage
continue to impress. In previous columns, I
talked about Happy, one of my favorite readings
they have online that is a must-catch!
There is another for Halloween and it comes
as a reading from Roy Steinberg, Cape May
Stage Artistic Director.
I am a sucker for anything Edgar Allen
Poe, and Steinberg did a reading of The Raven
and The Tell-Tale Heart. Both were outstanding,
but The Tell-Tale Heart was exceptional. Had I
known he was going to read it, I would have
said the same thing I did in in my high school
English class when they were going to recite
the classic — “Ooh, ooh, let me play the part
of the beating heart!”
One play that I’m hoping Cape May Stage
brings back is Rasheeda Speaks. Chase Jackson
was outstanding as Jaclyn, a receptionist at
a doctor’s ofice who is pushing others in
the ofice to the edge of their own ignorance
and fear. Every line was genuine, and rapport
among the readers was nothing short of brilliant!
THANKSGIVING
TURKEY HARVEST
at Beach Plum Farm
At Beach Plum Farm, we value and celebrate the connection between
our land and animals, and the food that they provide. This year, we invite you
to participate in this special connection with our Thanksgiving Turkey Harvest.
We believe knowing exactly where your food comes from—the knowledge of an animal’s living
conditions, treatment and preparation—is obfuscated in our modern food system. This Thanksgiving,
we extend the invitation to all interested to harvest your own turkey from Beach Plum Farm.
This year’s annual Turkey Harvest is timed to coincide with Thanksgiving; we want to give you the chance
to witness how your turkey has been raised, to work with our farmers in the Harvest,
and to prepare your own turkey to serve on your family’s Thanksgiving table.
The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
Did I mention we are becoming
a Free Range Turkey City this
Thanksgiving? We had a meeting of
the Cape May Inner Privvy Council
(if you have never heard of this body,
then you are not on it, but worry not: we operate
behind and above all of the usual oficialdom,
to ensure things in this city stay as
they are/hidden/buried depending on need
and how many questions they insist on asking
about the Privvy Council) and decided that
we shall have no more of those huge chemical-illed
monstrosities that weigh more than
the family car, and trigger puberty in anyone
over the age of 12 months.
No, we have secretly been genetically
engineering a version of the original Cape May
Wild Turkey that roamed this land before the
Lenape, and last month released 1,000 pairs
into the countryside. If you thought you saw
something unusual stirring in the woods at
night, fret not, it wasn’t the fabled Cape May
Medium-sized Foot, or an escaped Panther,
but a Wild Turkey. These birds are closer to
their dinosaur ancestors than those feathered
ninnies you see peering brainlessly through
fences, and are possessed of a few traits of
the fabled velociraptor, thanks to a perfectly
preserved specimen of that beast we found
in a peat bog just outside of Ocean City. They
weigh in at a lean but muscled 140lbs and can
run at a top speed of 42.55mph for exactly 91
seconds (we ascertained this from a series
of scientiically controlled experiments — we
rounded up a few score random Wildwooders,
itted them with trackers and let them loose in
the forest as we watched from a circling blimp.
It was a very interesting afternoon, though the
spine-chilling shrieks and screams rather put
me off the delicious packed lunch my staff had
made up for us to eat, which was, I thought,
typical Wildwooder lack of consideration).
Now I think about it, perhaps giving the
birds razor-sharp talons the size of bananas
was a touch too much, but really, what is the
vital lesson about Thanksgiving that we have
forgotten? Yes! That it wasn’t easy! That such
a feast comes at a price, and I do not mean
$19.99 with a bag of giblets thrown in. So, you
will be doubly pleased to learn that while all
of the birds are free for the taking, that only
traditional hunting methods are to be used:
ball and powder muskets, bow and arrow and
of course bare hands. I admit, in tests thus
far, only my old .50cal machine gun from The
War managed to bring one down, but this way,
friends, those of you who survive to sit down to
dinner will be truly thankful.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, dive into the world of birding!
Many of us are dreaming of travel
right about now, and New Jersey
Audubon offers a way to take
a virtual journey. The Birder’s
Bucket List Bash is a four-day
series of birding lectures that will take you all
over the world.
Backyard birding is a growing hobby
during the pandemic. Birds offer a welcome
respite from the worries of the human world.
Start by researching a bird from your neighborhood
— once you know its species, you
can learn its song and habits and start to predict
its behavior. Before you know it, you’ve
gotten to know many of the birds of your
hometown. You’ll be looking and listening for
their return if they migrate. You’ll spot their
mates and offspring — and their predators.
This tiny taste of nature can’t help but cheer
you up. Bird Twitter will let you know when
unusual visitors are in your area, giving you
an excuse for an impromptu walk in the middle
of winter. You don’t need to be an expert
to have a good time, nor do you have to be a
senior citizen. Hipsters have discovered birding,
as have celebrities, who perhaps enjoy
being the watcher instead of the watched.
New birders learn, as sparrow scholar Corina
Newsome says, “Birding is a hope-giving
activity.” According to Newsome, the knowledge
that a tiny bird can make it across the
Gulf of Mexico, with no land in sight, lends us
conidence that we can get through our own
perilous journeys. Birds can also restore the
connection to the rest of the world that many
of us are missing. Missing your dad? Spend
Veteran’s Day googling the birds of Korea —
where he served — and consider the music
that greeted him each morning. Dreaming of
a jungle adventure? Learn about the hawks of
Costa Rica. Need some color? Consider the
tropical birds of Florida.
The Birders’ Bucket List Bash is New
Jersey Audubon’s series of webinars designed
to explore 18 different locations from
November 11 to 14. Tickets range from $39
to $49 and include recordings after the event.
Visit njaudubon.org/bucket-list for more
information. Sponsored by the Cornell Lab
of Ornitholog, each webinar is 50 minutes,
including a question and answer session. The
webinars are designed to spark interest in
travel for birders to destinations including
Minnesota in Winter, Uganda, Antarctica,
Panama, Portugal, German and the Galapagos
Islands. It’s a little bit educational, a little bit
promotional, and a lot better than watching
another reality show marathon.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
It’s got to be about Pine Siskins, this column,
I mean. These tiny, nomadic finches
are staging what may be their greatest
irruptive migration in history with millions
of these streaky, squeaky, bratty
acrobats flocking to backyard bird-feeding
stations across the Northeast. With the species’
fondness for thistle seed that borders
upon frenzied addiction, anyone who hangs
a thistle sock should plan an escape route
before becoming immeshed in siskins caught
up in in the throes of thistle lust.
Thistle seed is smaller than a grain of
rice and dispensed from specialty feeders
with tiny, siskin-calibrated ports. If you don’t
want to shell out the dollars for thistle, siskin
are also partial to black oil sunflower seed.
Unfortunately so are lots of other species. I
offer both, as well as mixed bird seed that I
scatter on the ground for juncos and other
sparrows. If concentrated in piles, you court
the risk of drawing skunks and rats but scattered
they satisfy the foraging proclivities of
ground-feeding birds.
Back to siskin, these nomads of the boreal
forest head south in droves when the cone
crop fails. This is such a year and the feeding
frenzy only begins with siskin. Purple Finch
and Pine Grosbeak are also flooding south, as
well as hordes of Common Redpoll.
The trick to attracting the greatest variety
of birds is to offer a variety of seed types.
Shelled peanuts are popular with jays and
woodpeckers. Suet blocks which are dis-
pensed in wire cages are a hit with chickadees,
titmice and nuthatches. Both White-breasted
and Red-breasted Nuthatch abound this winter
and few observers fail to be charmed by
these “upside-down” birds as my non-birding
father-in-law used to call them.
Bird feeding is the most popular brand
of bird watching. No matter what feeders or
seed you choose to offer, make sure they are
elevated above the reach of marauding cats
and keep them away from plate glass doors
and windows. Birds striking glass result in
fatality half the time.
Bird-catching hawks. Yes, you’ll attract
them. Place feeders close to protective cover
(rose bush, hedge or conifer). Birds don’t like
being in the open and a place to bolt to when
a Sharp-shinned Hawk arrives on the scene
inspires confidence.
As for the hawk. consider it just one more
species coming to your feeder. By feeding
birds you are not causing them to be killed.
The Sharpie is going to take two birds a day
one way or the other. It’s Ma Nature’s way.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I am being cyber-bullied by an old girlfriend.
She is married with two small children
but the minute I announced my engagement
on Facebook, she started posting all kinds of
allegations and accusations. It’s insane. Naturally,
she is blocked from my page but we have
a lot of common friends who are allowing her to
ran rampant. Is there nothing I can do? It is so
ainful for my fiancée. — Bullied
Dear Bullied
The Answer Lady thinks the lady doth protest
too much. She must still have feelings for
you. The one thing you do NOT want to do is
respond. These things have a short cycle, even
though it may not seem that way. Live your life.
Reassure your fiancée that this is why you are
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
no longer involved with this vengeful woman.
Defriend anyone perpetuating this and stay
off Facebook. The Answer Lady thinks people
spend way too much time sitting in front of a
computer. Go take a walk with your fiancée on
the trails at Cape May Point State Park. Read a
book. Cape Atlantic Books is open. Focus on
the happiness ahead.
Dear Answer Lady
My seven-year-old daughter has a birth-
day coming up and desperately wants to have a
Princess Party for about 10 cousins and friends.
How can I give her a party with this COVID
nonsense still going strong? It is so hard to
explain all this to children. — Virused Out
Dear Virused
We need to keep thinking out of the box in
these challenging times. Contact Historic Cold
Spring Village. They are technically closed but
might be available for a private gathering. Exit
Zero’s Filling Station is another perfect spot for
an outdoor gathering, complete with burgers
and fries for all to gobble up. Remember, they
are kids and being outside is not a big deal. If
you prefer to have the party at home, pick up
pizzas at Lucky Bones, JoJo’s on the Washington
Street Mall or Five pub West. We also
have that little thing we all a beach. Not too
shabby a place to play and then gather for cake
and food after. The Answer Lady also strongly
suggests a list of activities – plenty of Princess
costumes, tiaras for all and make-up, plus art n
crafts. If on the beach – a shell gathering contest.
Do not be defeated. Be determined.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
KIRA is three-year-old girl with a happy outlook
on life. She came to the shelter as a stray
and has quickly adapted. Kira has wonderful
leash manners but also loves to sit at your feet
and be pet. She knows many behavioral cues
and is crate trained. Kira would be best suited
in a home with older children and one where
she would be the only pet.
EASY is an athletic and active four-year-old
boy. He loves to play and chase balls in the
yard. Easy is startled by loud noises and hides
in the bathtub during thunderstorms. He has
excellent leash skills and would be best in a
home with no other dogs, cats, or children. He
needs an active home and one willing to continue
his training.
MARCY is a young, 55-pound girl who came
to the shelter as a stray. She is learning good
manners along with agility skills and tricks.
She enjoys running and playing with toys in
the yard and has excellent leash skills. Marcy
would make a good companion for someone
willing to continue her training and as the only
pet in the house.
