2019 COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT | YMCA OF GREATER SAN ANTONIO
THE POWER OF US
Your YMCA of Greater San Antonio put your
strong support to work in 2019 resulting in an
exceptional year providing programs and services
for the communities we serve. We continue to make
significant progress in the three focus areas of our
mission: Youth Development, Healthy Living, and
Social Responsibility. We are pleased to have the
opportunity to share this progress with you in the
pages of this report, along with an update on the
work we have been doing since March 2020.
In 2019, our reach expanded with three exciting
additions.
• A new Y branch in Cibolo opened in partnership
with the City of Cibolo.
• New sports fields and a pavilion were added at the
Mays Family Y at Potranco.
• At Roberts Ranch located outside of Comfort, we
have a beautiful 1,200-acre ranch that is now
available for scheduled family hiking and nature
education programs.
The needs of the communities we serve are diverse,
requiring a variety of skills and resources to address.
We have found that combining our strengths with
the strengths of other community members through
partnerships improves the success and outcomes of
our initiatives. Here are just a few examples from
this year:
• With the support of the CDC and Metro Health, our
chronic disease and intervention programs provided
life-changing guidance to over 500 members of our
community.
• Partnering with Roy Maas Youth Alternatives, all of
our branches are now designated Safe Places for
young people needing immediate help due to family
problems, abuse, or homelessness.
• With Culinary Health Education for Families (CHEF),
we instruct members how to cook and eat healthier
in our branch teaching kitchens as well as some of
our out-of-school-time locations.
• In cooperation with area school districts, we serve
over 3,000 children with afterschool programs and
early learning centers.
• Our teen programs continue to provide platforms
for youth to learn supplemental academic skills,
vocational skills, and lifelong wellness habits.

As you can see, the Y offers much more than our
well-known gym, swimming, and sports programs. Yet,
these cornerstone programs for the Y continue to grow
and build mind, body, and spirit for our families. We
taught over 5,966 children how to swim in our aquatic
programs. Over 15,000 children participated in seasonal
sports programs. And our branch Y membership
continued to grow at record levels.
The YMCA of Greater San Antonio could not have had
such a remarkable impact on so many lives in 2019
without the support of donors and volunteers like you.
We appreciate the confidence you have in our leadership
and organization.
Fortunately, your support has placed our Y in a
good position to react to the challenges of 2020.
We pledge to continue to work with you in 2020 so
everyone—no matter who they are, where they come
from, or what their current circumstances—will get
the support they need when they need it to face life’s
challenges and reach their full potential. Just like the Y
has done in San Antonio for the last 164 years, we will
continue to serve our community.

HONORING DANIEL (Dan) GEORGE WEBSTER III
1939-2019
Not many organizations are blessed to have a
volunteer who dedicates over 50 years of their life
nurturing and supporting the organization’s mission.
Dan Webster was that person and more for the YMCA
of Greater San Antonio. Day in and day out, Dan was
always there for our Y providing his insight, wisdom,
and guidance.
No matter what opportunity or challenge we faced,
Dan always had a clear vision of how we needed to
approach a situation. He helped us maximize our
strengths and good fortune and, more importantly,
navigate the rough waters.
To honor Dan’s legacy, we will be renaming our
highest volunteer award to the Dan Webster
Red Triangle Award.
• Dan Webster grew up in Dallas, Texas, where the Park
Cities YMCA was a significant part of his family’s life.
After graduation from Texas Tech and UT Law in 1964,
Dan moved to San Antonio to join Cox, Smith and
Smith Law Firm (now Dykema Gossett PLLC).
• In 1966, Dan was introduced to the YMCA of Greater
San Antonio and our Y was a large part of his life ever
since. Dan was privileged to serve on the Y’s Board of
Directors and as the Y’s attorney.
• He served on the Y Board of Directors from
1965 to 2019 and as Board Chair from 1996 to 1999.
• In his 54 years of service, Dan was involved in building
14 Y branches, starting with Westside in 1978 and
renaming of Davis-Scott in 1994 and with the latest
being Cibolo Family in 2019.
• In 2005, Dan received the Red Triangle Award, the
highest award given to a volunteer by the YMCA of
Greater San Antonio.
“Integrity, quiet wisdom, servant leader;
by faith in action seeking the common
good for children and families throughout
our region; a steadying influence in
turbulent times; a friend. Dan was these
and more. He was a current of good that
informed the life of our Y, a repository
of its history, and a light toward its
future. He was an example and a mentor
to staff and volunteers … steady and
reassuring through the ebb and flow of Y
organizational life. During my 20 years as
CEO, Dan had my back countless times. He
was a grace gift to us all. I miss him.”
- Larry Crutsinger,
President and CEO 1983 to 2003

“Dan was always kind to me and cared
about me as a person. He wanted to
know where I grew up, where I went
to school, and took the time to know
me, to know my family, to know my
story. I will not forget our talks or how
he made me feel – as if I were the most
important person he saw or spoke to
that day. Dan encouraged me to make
a difference in our community, the
community he truly loved.”
- John Poe
Association Board Member
Dan
“Our friendship didn’t span a lifetime, but
close to 25 years, and it began and grew
out of our mutual love and service to the
YMCA of Greater San Antonio. He was our
E.F. Hutton: When Dan spoke, everyone
listened, not because he commanded the
room with his personality, but because
we knew what he had to say would be
correct and seasoned with uncommon
wisdom. And, his uncommon wisdom was
always offered in genuine humility and
kindness.”
- Steve Green,
Former Board Member and CVO
