It is a great place to live. Statistics released by Dot Loves Data last week shows there are 12.68 crimes committed in Selwyn per 10,000 people per month. The data company has analysed crimes from theft to assault. The big question though, how will the data look in five to 10 years. The district is expanding rapidly, young families are descending on Selwyn in the biggest wave since it was settled 150 years ago. As the teenage population mushrooms it will bring with it social issues commonplace in bigger urban areas. Wednesday November 11 2020 Selwyn Times A MEETING to discuss nearby residents’ concerns with the Weedons Rd overbridge is yet to take place, causing frustration. Former district councillor Gary Doyle, whose house is beside the overbridge, has requested a meeting to discuss his concerns with the New Zealand Transport Agency, which has contracted Downer and McConnell Dowell to do the work. He was told it would take three weeks to have a meeting to discuss his concerns with NZTA but this date has now passed. NZTA portfolio manager Colin MacKay did not answer a question from Selwyn Times as to why this meeting has not happened yet or when it will happen. Work on the overbridge is part of the Southern Motorway project. Doyle said there are a number of issues, including a roundabout sign on the overbridge that does not show the direction to the section of Weedons Rd where he lives. Motorists have to slow down dramatically to make the turn to get to this section of the road and because it is not marked on the sign, Doyle said he has nearly been t-boned on a number of occasions by drivers not expecting turning vehicles. Selwyn Times reported in July NZTA agreed to make upgrades to this signage near the Southern Motorway but this hasn’t happened yet. MacKay did not say why the upgrades have not been made or when they will be made. Doyle’s wife is unwell and the work taking place on the overbridge is negatively impacting her and has made his house shake, causing things to fall over inside. He said the project has also caused diesel fumes to waft into his property. Said Doyle: “I want the issues that we have here attended to, answered, and something done. This whole project is two years behind schedule.” Doyle said the issues that need addressing include the state of the water race beside the overbridge, which Doyle called “a disgrace,” and spraying which took place as part of the project, which he believes resulted in the death of two of his granddaughter’s budgies, several bonsai trees and a number of hedge plants on his daughter’s property. Doyle’s other concerns include street lights on the overbridge shining down into his property, a camera on it that looks down into the property, breaching privacy. The height of the roundabout and the road it is on, which is considerably higher than it was in the original plans, is also a concern for Doyle. MacKay did not respond to questions about Doyle’s list of concerns. Instead, he said: “There are many issues to be resolved including some with individual property owners. The project team is in regular contact with Mr Doyle and his son-in-law, and we have met with him many times since the project got under way to help resolve any issues raised. “In any major project with several interchanges and bridges, work will not always proceed exactly as anticipated at the outset. If it is wet, weather dependent parts of the project may be delayed and other work will advance or be rescheduled,” he said. But Doyle said the project team has not been in contact with him regularly and he has raised his concerns with NZTA “15 or 20 times.” NEWS 3 No date set to hear concerns of motorists • By Matt Slaughter CONCERNS ABOUT the Southern Motorway’s Springs Rd/ Halswell Junction Rd on-ramp will be discussed with New Zealand Transport Agency staff. But a date has not been set for this yet. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board chairman Mike Mora told Selwyn Times last month he would ask for a meeting to be held between the two organisations to discuss safety concerns for motorists trying to get onto the on-ramp. Motorists coming from the Prebbleton direction have less than 200m to cross to the onramp lane. They have to navigate their way across, avoiding vehicles from the Sockburn side of Springs Rd, and traffic coming through the roundabout from Hornby. Mora said it is important the meeting happens as soon as possible before a serious crash happens. Deputy mayor Malcolm Lyall said he will consider going to the meeting, if he is invited, to ask for more signage telling motorists how to get to Prebbleton along the Southern Motorway. However, Lyall said he’d prefer less talk and more action from the NZTA.
