EDITORIAL
Good News, but you
will have to lobby for it
▲ Stefanie Unland Editor
& Publisher, The Recycler
As we went to press the EU’s new Green
Procurement Policy (GPP) Criteria for
Imaging Equipment was published. Big
deal you say? Well it is. GPP for Imaging
Equipment applies to printers, copiers,
multifunctional devices and scanners,
enabling public authorities to endorse
sustainable printing by lowering the
environmental impact of devices purchased,
and favouring the use of remanufactured
cartridges. Yes, you read it correctly -
favouring the use of remanufactured
cartridges.
The challenge for the reuse channel is to
get active and lobby local and national public
bodies in every member state to ensure they
follow the GPP.
Continuing on an EU theme, the draft
Voluntary Agreement (VA) will have been
published by the time you receive your copy
of The Recycler.
The VA between a group of OEMs,
remanufacturers, EU officials and others
has to be agreed ahead of the EU’s January
2021 deadline. In the event that a VA is
not concluded the EU would introduce
legislation as part of “The Green Deal”
published earlier this year.
Would a VA work for the whole industry?
Our view is that legislation could be enacted
within 2 - 3 years as most of the groundwork
has been done in developing the GPP.
Legislation would apply to the whole market
and would avoid a two tier market.
Unless something significant happens,
Paperworld is going ahead in January 2021
event, to see, touch and order new products
show is as busy as a week in the office, but
the buzz, the ideas, the opportunities all
make it worthwhile. Look for our feature in
It seems that in six months of the dreaded
C word (COVID) the market has contracted
We have invited Keypoint Intelligence’s
Christine Dunne and John Shane and
Lightwords Peter Mayhew to share their
perspectives on the events this year, the
trends and what they see happening in
the market. Ahead of that here is our take
on the market from The Recycler’s audience
perspective.
It should not be news to you that no matter
whether you are an OEM, remanufacturer
or a reseller, the market shrank rapidly as
a result of the pandemic. Everyone felt the
impact, but some felt it more than others.
The market
Year-on-year the market has contracted
about 1.6%, but fell off the cliff in the first
half of the year with estimates of a market
contraction of 80% at its peak. Fortunately,
growth has resumed in the couple of
months and we estimate is at around
50% of 2019.
Going forward it is too early to see how
much market share changes between the
OEM, reuse and new build channels.
The OEMs
In the consumables market contractual
supplies sold via MPS programmes are
the bread and butter earners for the
OEMs. As work and home schooling
became the norm, office based MPS
revenues plummeted in March, April
and May as much as 85% for some
OEMs and only started to rise again is
June and as we went to press our best
guess is that MPS revenues are at
45% – 50% of 2019 revenues.
If there was good news for the OEMs
it was that small desktop printers and
2020 Imaging Market Covid Trend
consumables were flying off the shelves
to support work and home schooling.
Good news, but not really. First of all,
the supply chain could not react quickly
enough and by April it appeared to be
easier to find a four leaf clover than a
printer and a set of consumables.
A couple of firmware updates did not
endear HP to their consumers, judging
by the number of complaints we received.
If there was good news for thee OEMs
it was that small desktop printers and
consumables were flying off the shelves
to support work and home schooling.
MPS at home has started to emerge, but
the challenge is to persuade consumers to
enable that concept. MPS programmes
can collect a lot of data and do consumers
want to share their domestic / work print
activities? The jury is out on that one.
That said, app based printer management
has had a good reception from consumers.
The challenge for every OEM now is to
understand what businesses are going
to do. Will everyone return to the office
and get back to whatever normal will be.
Which they would want, especially for
their 2021 forecasts.
But as one OEM told us recently: “Being
an OEM at the moment is like driving in
the fog, we think we know where we are,
but we are not sure. We don’t really know
where our competitors are and we are not
sure where our customers are, what they
are doing and that makes it hard to plan.”
The unspoken challenge is how consumers
are thinking. The historical reliance on
brand loyalty in the imaging channel is not
as strong as it once was. Consumers have,
are and will rethink their brand choices.
New build
If you are into conspiracy theories, you
might think the virus was a deliberate plan
because the impact happened on the peak
of the supply chain.
In November, December and January
production increased in China to ensure
there was maximum stock in the channel
ahead of Chinese New Year at the end of
January. While China remained closed for
several weeks, the stock was on its way to
market. Perfect timing because just as the
OEM channel was starting to dry up, new
build stock was arriving to fill the gap.
Remanufacturing
The remanufacturing channel probably
needs to reposition its image as the reuse
channel because reuse was a winner in
many ways.
Some companies closed their
remanufacturing operations for several
weeks depending on local regulations,
but sales teams were working seamlessly
from home processing orders. Stock and
availability were issues that were overcome
by collaborating with other businesses.
On the surface the traditional silo style
of business positively mutated into a
collaboratively thinking business. One
remanufacturer who did not close saw
their core sales drop 50% compared to
2019, but they picked up 30% new business
producing for other brands.
Work and home schooling also created a
demand for reuse printers and consumables,
and the normal brand barriers don’t appear
to have held up. Buying a reused printer
with a warranty anecdotally overcomes
barriers to buying a reused cartridge.
Reused printer warranties are easy to give, as
one company explained. For every hundred
used printers we buy in, we know that even
though the printer is three years old, it has
hardly been used. 60% will have printed less
than 50,000 pages, 28% will have printed
between 50,000 and 100,000 pages and 12%
will have printed more than 100,000 pages.
It is easy to give a warranty on printers with
low print volumes and we have seen an
uptake in demand across Europe. However,
this presents other challenges as our market
has reversed from exporting 80% of our
printers outside of Europe. Now only 20%
Reuse, especially of printers, appears to be
a catalyst for reused consumables. It will
be early 2021 before the OEMs really have
a feel for how well MPS has recovered and
what share has been lost to reduced overall
demand to alternative and reuse brands.
Move to A4 Devices, Home
Working Shaping OEM
Cartridge Use and Purchasing
Three outcomes of the COVID-19
pandemic and a shift to working from
home are lower overall print volumes, a
shift to greater reliance on A4 laser and
inkjet technology versus A3, and a potential
increase in third party supplies use due to
many home users paying for their own ink
and toner.
Reused printers were the big winner in
the reuse channel. Typically sold into
other markets, the demand or reused
printers took off in Europe. Several factors
created the demand, mainly workplace
social distancing rules where the printer
is a people pinch point, so more printers
facilitates social distancing.
get exported and we see a clear ongoing
demand for reuse that is growing.
It is too early to determine the impact
of the virus on the market or how it
will impact long term, but there are
green shoots of a change in perspectives
towards brands. A recent report by the
UK consumer organisation Which? saw
According to Keypoint Intelligence
estimates, office print volume is expected
to decline about 30% this year in the
United States and Western Europe
— driven by former office workers working
at home and industry job losses. Some of
the pages lost in the office will re-emerge
in homes as workers continue to try to do
their jobs at home. While some pages will
be lost forever, the home environment is
expected to see a 130% increase in printing
in 2020.
More A4 inkjets being
used for work
As workers and pages move to the home,
it is more likely that A4 inkjets are being
used but A4 laser will also have a role. In
a new Keypoint Intelligence survey titled
The Future Office Survey: Working from
Home During COVID-19, slightly over
two-thirds of new at-home workers in the
United States and Western Europe were
using an inkjet printer or MFP for work.
This number is probably higher as we find
people often mistake inkjet printers for
laser technology.
Of these new at-home workers, about 60%
of those in the U.S. and 44% of those in
Western Europe said they pay for the ink
or toner that they use for work-related
printing. The number could be lower in
Western Europe as businesses in this region
Whether companies
cover consumables costs
may shape use of OEM
cartridges at home
We have found that within traditional
office environments, IT decision makers
and procurement professionals tend to
purchase supplies that are made by the
printer/MFP manufacturer, followed by
those that are remanufactured by a third
party. They often have relationships that
encourage the use of these products and/or
they perceive them to be of a higher quality.
Within home office environments,
however, the use of original supplies may
be less prioritised—particularly when
the worker is responsible for purchasing
his or her ink and toner. He or she may
be more likely to opt for much lowercost
options, including clone cartridges
available on websites like Amazon. That
said, considering that many employers
cost of at-home workers’ cartridges—it is
and requirements for OEM versions.
How employers pay for
consumables may shape use
of OEM cartridges at home
One factor may be how the cartridge is
purchased. If the employee buys it on his
own, and then expenses it, it’s perhaps more
likely he or she will opt for a non-OEM
product (though some companies may have
guidelines for the type of supply that is
permitted). But if the company purchases
the cartridge, or an auto-resupply plan is
Potential move to A4 print
devices in traditional offices
With many employees having moved out
of traditional offices, the sale and use of
A3 print devices is suffering. Not only
are fewer workers in the office to use these
devices, but there’s a potential move to
A4 products for safety reasons.
Indeed, some workplaces may choose to
move away from centralized (A3) printing
to having more A4 lasers and/or inkjets
distributed about the office (e.g., small
workgroup class or even personal class
printers on individual desks or individual
offices) as a way to help encourage social
distancing and prevent workers from
touching shared surfaces—helping to
slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Kyocera Document Solutions America
is one vendor taking advantage of this
opportunity. In a letter to partners,
President and CEO Óscar Sánchez stated:
“The physical layout of the offices we
return to will have changed. There will
be a focus to limit the sharing of office
equipment such as MFPs and printers.
Therefore, after many years of centralised
printing and a reduction in the number
of desktop devices, it is likely that
we see a reversal of this trend:
companies will revert back
to decentralised printing and
individual desktop A4 MFPs
and printers.”
Some sectors experienced unprecedented
growth while others have seen the opposite
effect on their business.
Wide-format printing
In 2019, Lightwords estimated the Wide
Format printing market to be worth about
$25 billion (€21 billion). By August 2020,
billions of dollars of business had shifted
from one wide-format market segment to
another, with some segments experiencing
high, double digit increases.
The speed with which this industry pivoted
to target new applications was impressive.
All those distance markers on floors in
of the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of
square meters of floor graphics media were
air freighted to keep up with demand.
The advertising industry also realised that
new media and adhesives meant every
surface is a candidate for a social distancing
Expect more and bigger graphics, placed
almost anywhere.
Then there is Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE). Want your logo, brand,
or logo on the fabric, then its likely to be
wide format printed onto the fabric.
It is the same solution for customised,
colourful facemasks.
State of the Industry:
Wide-format and
commercial printing
The first six months of 2020 have had a
dramatic effect on the printing industry.
shops, restaurants, and public spaces;
most were produced by wide-format inkjet
printers and, cut to shape by the same
service providers. The partitions and new
signage appearing between counters, cut
to size and installed by the wide-format
industry. Many prompting previously
unplanned, simultaneous brand and
signage refreshes.
The industry worked 24/7, three shifts a day
to keep up with demand. In the early days
Fashion brands learned a lot from the
pandemic, they see opportunities for more
personalised clothing designs. Expect to see
greater use of digital technology to print
fabrics and shorten supply chains.
There are losers as well. The premium
photography market has stalled because
graduations, weddings, and other
celebratory events were postponed or
remain restricted. But there has been
unprecedented demand for photobooks.
sporting events meant fewer graphics
or banners to be produced.
The consequence of all this disruption
is a decline in sales of printers, a
dramatic change in the types of inks
and paper demanded by the market
(see chart below) and a big shift in
demand towards sustainable and
responsibly produced media.
Commercial printing
Another story of market bubbles, winners,
and losers. Remember the shortages of
essential foods and household goods
caused by just-in-time supply chains
unable to meet demand? Part of the
problem was long lead times for packaging
and labels printed lithographically. This
meant digital presses were used to produce
smaller batches with a greater range of
customized messaging to meet the targeted
demand required by the market.
There has also been strong demand for
flexible packaging. Specifically, the
bags, pouches and bottle wraps used
for everything from candy to cat food.
Although flexographic printing takes care
of the longer print runs, smaller batches
can be produced digitally. Technologies for
these applications only came to market in
the last few years. Until the pandemic they
were considered unproven. Now digitally
have” for many brands and marketeers.
The corrugated box and luxury packaging
markets, already growing before the
pandemic, have seen a steepening of
demand caused by online shopping. The
Until the pandemic they were considered
unproven. Now digitally produced flexible
packaging is the “must have” for many brands
and marketeers.
most practical way to get many products
to consumers securely is in a cardboard
box. That packaging requires branding
and labels which reflect the goods
within. Marketeers want that packaging
personalised. Again, digital presses provide
the answer, consuming huge quantities of
cardboard, paper, and ink.
The corona virus pandemic was not good
news for general, commercial printing,
a market already under pressure from
shortening print runs. Although there
remains a market for thousands or millions
of the same printed page, these jobs are in
decline. Production capacity now exceeds
demand and many Litho presses sit idle
for many hours a day. A recent British
Printing Industries Federation (BPIF)
Printing Outlook report identifies that
in May 2020, 51% of British printers were
operating and less than 50% capacity.
Both the wide-format and commercial
print industries are seeing pockets
of opportunity, many of these new
applications are likely to continue
for the foreseeable future. The key
advantage many print service providers
are realising is that their digital printers
can produce more than just one
application or service. And there
is where the opportunity exists. ■
EUROPE ETIRA, Open Letter, Circular Economy
ETIRA demands ‘fast action’ following
EU’s Circular Economy report
The European Toner and Inkjet Remanufacturers Association (ETIRA) has issued an open letter to the EU, demanding
‘fast action’ to stop the ‘devastating impact’ the printing industry is having on the environment.
The letter, published on ETIRA’s
website, responds to the EU’s Circular
Economy report, stating that at present,
consumers and small business owners
are currently tied to buying expensive,
environmentally damaging ink cartridge
replacements from the Original
Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), rather
than being given the choice to reuse them
time and again.
ETIRA is calling on the European
Commission to end this negative cycle,
by banning chips and firmware updates,
introducing a minimum number for reuse
cartridges, and by stopping the import of
cheap and polluting single-use cartridges
from outside the EU.
Javier Martinez, President of ETIRA,
said: “We need fast action to stop
consumers and smaller business owners
being held hostage by the big OEMs.
“A change to the rules would give
consumers the freedom to choose the type
of ink cartridges they purchase, putting
environmentally friendly reuse cartridges
on the table. This will lead to a true
business model change, completely aligned
with the EU’s Green Deal and the EU’s
2020 Circular Economy Action Plan.
“It is hard to believe, but today you need
26 cartridges to print 10,000 pages vs just
one cartridge 20 years ago!
“With green issues so high on the agenda
across Europe we need to see legislation
to help us in the printing industry work
to reduce, remake and recycle – creating a
circular economy in printing, in line with
the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan.”
According to ETIRA, “The current
printing business model has a devastating
impact on the environment, creating huge
waste due to the short operational life of
the printing hardware, combined with
single-use cartridges.”
ETIRA cites a recent EU report on
a voluntary agreement in the printing
industry, found that:
• Cartridges create 2.5% of total small
and medium electronic appliances waste
• Both the Small Office (SOHO) and
home printer repair rate is zero
• The average operating time for home
printer usage is only five hours during
its expected four years of operational
life.
• The average total cartridge operating
time is just 19 minutes
Martinez added: “Sadly, buying a new
machine is often cheaper than buying
a new set of cartridges, meaning people
throw away both the device and reusable
cartridges. This has to stop.
“We support the EU’s 2020 proposal for
a Circular Economy. However, its current
suggestion to reduce the environmental
impact of printing through a Voluntary
Agreement for the printing sector can only
be a real solution if it stops anti-cartridge
reuse factors such as chips and firmware
updates, creates a minimum number for
reuse cartridges, and stops the invasion of
cheap and polluting single-use non-OEM
cartridges from outside the EU. “
ETIRA points to some new EU Circular
Economy Action Plan highlights: “(…)
have reduced impact due to the limitations
of voluntary approaches. In fact, there is
no comprehensive set of requirements to
ensure that all products placed on the EU
market become increasingly sustainable
and stand the test of circularity. Priority
will be given to addressing product groups
identified in the context of the value chains
featuring in this Action Plan, such as
electronics, ICT and textiles”.
Martinez added: “We hope our Open
Letter is effective in communicating
this message and raising awareness
of the urgent need for change”. Can
anybody present an abuse case which
is similar to the actual linear razor and
blades printing model?
"ETIRA believes there is a real
opportunity for change. New legislation
in this industry would see environmental
improvements and generate up to 25,000
new jobs across Europe.
“There is so much good to be gained
from changes to this sector and we want
to see this pushed up the agenda and
discussed,” concluded Martinez.
Epson loses patent and
legal costs awarded
against them
The Argentine Federal Courts has confirmed Seiko Epson’s
abandonment of its patents and ordered Epson to pay
GTC’s costs.
In the long running patent dispute
between Seiko Epson and Argentinian
based GTC a Federal Judge confirmed
the abandonment by the Japanese
company of its patent and its withdrawal
of infringement claims against the
Argentine company GTC. The Judge
also ordered Seiko Epson to pay GTC’s
attorneys fees, court costs including
experts’ fees.
The lawsuit relates to validity of
patents connected to Epson Seiko printer
cartridges that were very popular in
the Argentine market. Seiko Epson had
accused GTC of infringing several of its
patents and had then blocked the GTC
sales in Argentina for several years.
In November, The Recycler reported
that Seiko Epson lost a patent lawsuit
in Argentina and quit patent claims on
several of its printer cartridges. Based on
this decision, GTC would move on to sue
Epson Seiko for damages.
There remains other pending litigation
involving Seiko Epson in the federal
Argentine courts, where Seiko Epson has
also withdrawn its claims and requested
not be sanctioned by the court as in the
previous case.
The Recycler understands that
the Federal Trade Ministry is still to
decide on the final settlement of the
Seiko Epson patent conflict after
the Japanese company requested the
abandonment of its patents with the
Argentine Patent Office. ■
HP: More firmware pandemic issues
A UK care home is impacted by HP’s latest firmware actions affecting HP 903xl
and 953xl cartridges in the United Kingdom market.
Richard Pateman of UK based World
of Inks Ltd reports again that customers
are experiencing problems when installing
remanufactured cartridges and the cartridges
will not work again until new chips are
available.
Commenting that HP “strikes again”
Pateman reports that the latest firmware
update dated 14/15 July that the following
updates are now locking out v9 chips installed
on non-OEM cartridges:
• 903XL – MCP2CN2025AR
• 953XL – ELISXLP1N003.2024A.00
Commenting on the HP action, Pateman
said: “During lock down, luckily I was open,
a care home rang me to say they have put a set
of inks in their printer, they were desperate to
print and had the message damaged cartridge
and to replace.
“(953xl printer) They had a few spare sets
which I told them; they must contact the
seller as they will no longer work due to the
update.
“They did not buy the inks from me,
they were buying from Amazon, but were
not given any sheets or information about
turning off this update (I give a sheet to every
sale on 903 and 953xl inks).
“This is also something every seller should
be doing. Educating customers to turn off
and to explain about firmware updates.
“Luckily, I had one set in stock of the
originals which they came and collected
which got them out of trouble.”
If the printer is set to automatic update
the updates in question allow the installed
cartridges to continue to work until they
are empty. When installing replacement
cartridges, they fail to work.
HP carried out a similar firmware update at
the height of the pandemic in Europe on the
17 March 2020 when the following updates
locked out v8 chips installed on non-OEM
cartridges:
• 903XL Printers = MCP2CN2006BR
• 953XL Printers = ELLISXLP1N003.
2007A.00
Commenting further Pateman said: ”Also
with the shortage of HP items in the market
at the moment, these updates cause even more
stress to the consumer when they do, I cannot
believe they did a update in lockdown (March
2020) and then again in July 2020.”
To check your current firmware status,
print a status page from the LCD screen
menu, this can be found in reports. this will
have the firmware version on it.
To turn off automatic firmware updates:
• Click “Setup” on printer screen (this looks
like a cog or wheel)
• Click on “Printer Maintenance”
• Click on “Update the Printer”
• Click on “Printer Update Options”
• Click on “Do Not Check”
You then need to select “No” on the
question that pops up.
If you clicked yes on the last message, it
would discard the change.
A few days later HP announced that
effective 1st December 2020 certain HP ink
cartridges may no longer work in HP printers.
HP advises consumers that from the 1st
Brother busts counterfeit
network in Germany
ICCE reports on Brother’s recent success in Germany where Brother discovered
a network of counterfeiters selling fake toner cartridges on Amazon.
Brother International Europe Ltd. is the
European sales headquarter of Brother
Industries, Ltd. Towards the end of
2019, Brother received several customer
complaints and negative reviews on
its products sold on marketplace giant
Amazon, the Imaging Consumables
Coalition of Europe, Middle East and
Africa (ICCE) reported.
According to the report, after months
of conducting investigations, Brother
discovered a network of counterfeit sellers
that led to a highly successful raid operation
in conjunction with German authorities
in Berlin. During the raid in late 2019,
thousands of counterfeit Brother retail
packaging boxes with fake holograms were
seized. Amongst the findings, there was a
clear lead to additional implicated sellers in
this criminal network.
ASIA Ricoh, Manufacturing, Automation
Ricoh looks at automation
In early 2020, Brother conducted a second
successful warehouse raid in conjunction
with German authorities where thousands
more counterfeit products were confiscated
which included pallets of counterfeit flat
packaging and retail boxes, fake labels
and other packaging materials bearing the
Brother trademark.
A spokesperson from Brother said:
“Brother places its customers first
everywhere, every time. We are committed
in detecting counterfeits online by working
with our partners and law enforcement
authorities in order to protect our
customers.”
Brother is a member of ICCE, the
Imaging Consumables Coalition of
Europe, Middle East and Africa. ICCE
has been operating since 1997 and is an
authoritative, effective and respected global
voice leading the fight against intellectual
property crime in imaging consumables.
It is the collaboration between law
enforcement and ICCE members that
enables the effective pooling and exchange
of intelligence which achieves results in the
fight against counterfeiters. ■
The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a look into factory floor
setups due to the new social distancing rules.
Reuters reported that Japans
manufacturing sector is taking the
COVID-19 pandemic to focus on a
rethink of setups on factory floors. The
report says that new social distancing
rules have stimulated “increased use of
robots and other technology for quality
control, including remote monitoring
which was already being adopted before the
pandemic.”
As part of the group of manufacturers,
Reuters writes that Ricoh Co Ltd is
looking into automating “all of the
production processes for drum units
and toner cartridges at one of its Japan
plants by March 2023. Robots perform
most of the processes already, and since
April, technicians have been monitoring
equipment on the factory floor from home.”
This could eventually mean that staff
numbers can be reduced and monitoring of
robots could be done from home. Kazuhiro
Kanno, General Manager at Ricoh’s
printer manufacturing unit explained: “Of
course, you need to be on site to assess and
execute solutions when issues come up but
identifying and confirming are tasks we can
now do from home.” ■
ASIA IDC, China, Printer Shipments
Record high for printer
shipments in China
IDC’s latest "China Printing Peripheral Market Quarterly
Tracking Report (Q2 2020)" shows that in the second
quarter of 2020, China’s print peripherals market shipped
5.438 million units.
This latest quarterly report shows that
the market has seen a year-on-year increase
of 19.1%. Inkjet accounts for 1.871
million units, a year-on-year increase of
42.5% and laser printers count for 2.958
million units, a year-on-year increase of
19.9%; thermal print technology accounts
for 607,000 units, a year-on-year decrease
of 22.4 %.
According to IDC, the consumer
demand in the market remained strong,
and the shipment of inkjet products
in the consumer market reached 1.277
million units in the second quarter. IDC's
latest consumer printing user behaviour
research report shows that ink cartridge
products account for more than 40% of
the overall consumer market.
IDC said that as manufacturers
continue to improve the awareness of ink
tank products among consumer users,
coupled with its lower printing cost
advantages, ink tanks have greater growth
potential in the consumer market. IDC
predicts that in the second half of 2020,
the pandemic situation in some areas may
see a second wave. There will be some
home users preparing for home office or
online learning, so there is still a need to
buy printers. In the second half of the
year, consumer market shipments can still
maintain positive year-on-year growth.
There are regional differences in the
degree of recovery of commercial demand
in the laser market: the procurement of
commercial printing equipment in the
eastern and southern coastal areas have
recovered faster, while the northern and
western regions have been affected by
repeated local outbreaks and the recovery
of commercial equipment procurement
has been slow.
In addition to regional differences,
shipment channels have also been
adjusted, IDC said. Manufacturers
and channel vendors are paying more
attention to online live broadcasts,
short video e-commerce, corporate
procurement e-commerce and other
diversified customer acquisition methods.
In the second half of the year, there
are still two major uncertainties in the
commercial market. One is the recovery
speed of the economic environment,
and the other is the degree of progress in
digital transformation of new formats
such as online services and collaborative
offices. IDC added that the acceleration
of digital transformation will inevitably
lead to a decrease in print volume.
Because the digital transformation of
enterprises will promote the paperless
process, traditional printing requirements
such as online approval of all processes
and online cross-regional meetings may be
affected, which will result in print volume
reduction in the commercial market.
The thermal printer market is facing
greater risks this year. The latest
document issued by the State Council
requires that “by the end of 2020, special
VAT invoices will be basically realised
electronically, and the main tax-related
services will be basically handled online”.
As local tax authorities accelerate the
process of upgrading public service
platforms for VAT electronic invoices,
the application scenarios of printing
bills on devices will shrink sharply. IDC
expects annual shipments to decline by
approximately 28.9% year-on-year.
IDC Imaging, Printing and Document
Solutions Market Analyst Cao Min
believes that manufacturers and
distributors should be more cautious
in formulating production and sales
plans for the second half of the year.
On the one hand, with the traditional
off-season in July and August, the pace
of thermal printer sales has slowed down
significantly, and the inventory turnover
cycle of distributors has been lengthened.
It is necessary to prevent the risk of
inventory backlog.
On the other hand, as the overseas
pandemic has not been effectively
controlled, and the COVID-19 outbreaks
have been repeated in some parts of
the country, manufacturers need to
make preparations for "anti-pandemic
normalisation", optimise supply chain and
sales management, and develop flexible
supply and marketing plans. ■
WORLD FOCUS
IMEA Middle East, Africa, India, HCP Market
News from India, Middle East & Africa…
The overall Middle East and Africa (MEA) hardcopy peripherals (HCP) market contracted in both units and value
in Q2 2020, according to the latest insights from International Data Corporation (IDC).
The global technology research and
consulting firm's Worldwide Quarterly
Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker shows
that 1.01 million units were shipped in
the region in Q2 2020 for a total value of
$263.81 million (€221.68 million), down
16.5% and 38.7%, respectively, year-onyear.
These declines can primarily be
attributed to supply-chain disruptions
and subdued demand caused by the
outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic,
IDC said.
According to the latest research, the
performance of the region's major markets
varied widely. While demand for HCP
products in South Africa, Turkey, and
the UAE was adversely impacted, Saudi
Arabia saw notable unit growth due to a
surge in consumer spending ahead of the
rate of VAT being increased to 15%. It is
also worth noting that the Kenyan and
Ethiopian markets experienced tripledigit
unit growth in Q2 2020 due to
upcountry expansion and an online sales
push by certain vendors.
Looking at the MEA region as a whole,
inkjet shipments were up 7.5% year-onyear
in Q2 2020 to total 218,241 units,
while the segment's value was up 21.2%
to $25.27 million (€21.24 million). This
growth was primarily driven by demand
for entry-level inkjet devices from the
Hubei Dinglong reports
H12020 results
The company celebrates their 202020 birthday this year
with a tough Q1 but a positive Q2.
In the first quarter of
2020, the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic, led
to the company’s Wuhan
headquarters, factory and
subsidiaries outside the
province being closed for
a period of time while
inspections were carried
out in accordance with
the announcement and
requirements of the local
pandemic prevention
guidelines.
Delays in kickstarting the
in resumption of work were
caused by various factors from
traffic restrictions, prevention
of personnel returning to work
and the company’s factories
had insufficient capacity
utilisation led to some limited
product delivery delays.
In the second quarter,
the company proactively
responded by continuously
increasing investment,
expanding sales channels and
ensuring the rapid recovery
of production and operations
and a steady increase in overall
performance compared with
last year.
At the end of the reporting
period, Hubei Dinglong
Group recorded an operating
income of RMB 811.016
million ($117.340 million/
€99.133 million), a 45.16%
increase compared to the
same period of the previous
financial year. Net profit was
attributable to shareholders
of listed companies was RMB
199.147 million ($17.238
million/ €14.563 million), an
increase of 41.52% over the
previous year.
For the consumables
segment, its three core
products (colour polymerised
toner, chips, and developer
rollers) sales slightly increased
for the colour polymerised
toner, chip sales remained
stable and Dinglong’s new
material development roller
sales increased by 90% yearon-year.
Its finished cartridge
sales increased, and the
incorporation of the inkjet
segment has been progressing
and sales increased 34%.
In its report Hubei Dinglong
said: “The company has
formed a full-industry chain
model with a competitive
advantage in the printing and
copying general consumables
industry and has mastered
the core materials of the toner
cartridge industry.” ■
EUROPE Turbon AG, Financials, Business, Remanufacturing
Turbon AG‘s printing segment
impacted by COVID-19
COVID-19 impacts on sales, but the company expects
their electrics division to grow against a decline in print
as the company continues its business transformation.
Turbon AG (Turbon) has released figures
for the first half of 2020 and its outlook for
the full year and beyond.
The company commented that the
measures taken from March 2020 to
contain the effects of the Coronavirus
pandemic affected both its electrics and
printing segment in the second quarter
of 2020.
Over the last three years the company has
been restructuring the former core business
of producing remanufactured laser toner
cartridges (printing segment) with and in
particular the extensive debt relief achieved
in the course of the measures. The company
added that it expects the Group will emerge
from the COVID-19 crisis as a stronger
business.
In the first six months of 2020, the
companies in the Turbon Group achieved
Group sales of €21.5 million ($25.47
million) compared to €29.5 million ($34.95
million) in the same period last year.
The printing segment accounted for
€14.9 million ($17.65 million) compared to
the previous year’s €22.9 million ($27.12
million) Within the printing segment €6.6
million ($7.81 million) of business were due
to remanufactured laser toner cartridges
sales, compared to €13.9 million ($16.46
million) during the same period of the
previous year.
Turbon said that the decline in sales in
the group of €8.0 million ($9.47 million)
exclusively concerned its printing segment.
Earnings before taxes for the printing
segment were -€0.6 million (-$0.71
million) compared to -€2.2 million (-$2.6
million) in the same period of last year,
whereby within the segment the result in
the business with laser toner cartridges was
-€0.9 million (-$1.07 million) compared
to -€2.5 million (-$2.96 million) in the
previous year.
Turbon adopted its forecasts for the
printing segment sales, which it now
predicts to be in the region of €29.0 to
€30.0 million ($34.33 to $35.51 million),
revised down from its original forecast of
€30.0 to €33.0 million ($35.51 to $39.06
million). In this amount are one-time
expenses for inventory devaluations
(printing segment, laser toner cartridges)
of €0.4 million ($0.47 million) and for
brokerage costs in connection with the
letting of the property in Hattingen.
Turbon AG said that the sale of the
properties in Thailand is still planned but
the COVID-19 restrictions have delayed
this for the time being.
The company sees an ongoing
demand for digitalisation in the
COVID-19 era and core growth for the
electrics division, weaker sales for the
printing division especially the sales of
remanufactured laser toner cartridges.
The company said it will particularly be
looking at its investment in Dubai and
focus on Berolina’s end-user business. ■
Office Depot
sells Spanish
Viking business
Office Depot Europe is set to sell
its Spanish direct business unit to
strategic buyer Bruneau Spain.
Earlier this month, Office Depot
Europe, a portfolio company of
AURELIUS Equity Opportunities SE &
Co. KGaA has agreed to sell its Spanish
contract business unit to Lyreco, a
provider of office supplies headquartered
in Marly, France.
Office Depot Europe has now also
agreed to sell its Spanish direct business
unit, which runs on the commercial
brand Viking, to strategic buyer Bruneau
Spain, a subsidiary of French Bruneau
Group. Bruneau is a mail order company
for office supplies headquartered in
Villebon sur Yvette, France.
Office Depot Europe said it will
hereby completely exit the Spanish
market following the successful sale of
its Spanish contract business unit on to
Lyreco on 23 July.
Bruneau said it will integrate the
business into its existing platform
and further develop it. The business
has excellent sales capabilities and
the buyer is ensuring continuity for
its approximately 24,000 existing
customers.
Since Office Depot Spain was acquired
in January 2017 commercial and
technological ecommerce capabilities
have been strategically developed as part
of a digital transformation project.
The sale of the Spanish direct
business unit is part of the ongoing
transformation of Office Depot Europe.
AURELIUS said that the sale will allow
Office Depot Europe to focus on its
core European markets and ecommercecentric
business.
It is the fourth exit of an Office Depot
business to complete in the past nine
months. Office Depot Europe sold its
Central Eastern European business in
November 2019, its Nordic division
in May 2020 and its Spanish contract
business unit as of 23 July 2020.
ASIA Ninestar, Lexmark, Pantum, Static Control, Financials, Business
Ninestar releases half-yearly results
Pantum shipments were up 50%, while Lexmark maintained profitability,
consumable sales up 23%, with remanufactured 50% year-on-year. SCC sales were
impacted by COVID in US and European markets with revenues down 25%.
During the reporting period, the
COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread
around the world, causing substantial
economic turbulence, also impacting the
Ninestar Group of companies.
The economic situation of various
countries in the world continued to decline,
and more and more users and enterprises
chose home office working environments,
and the printing volume of SMB corporate
offices decreased. However, with the
implementation of remote office and home
learning, the demand for home printing
increased significantly.
During the reporting period, the company
achieved a total operating income of RMB
9.988 billion ($1.455 billion/ €1.211 billion),
a decrease of 8.26% from the same period of
the previous year. Net profit attributable to
listed companies was RMB 358.91 million
($51.279 million /€43.031 million), a yearon-year
decrease of 3.72% over the same
period.
Pantum’s various operating data continued
to grow rapidly. Global printer shipments
increased by more than 50% year-on-year, and
shipments of original consumables increased
by 60%. Sales revenue maintained continuous
growth.
Lexmark achieved operating income of
RMB 7,220 billion ($1.05 billion/ €883
million), a year-on-year decrease of 13.39%,
and net profit of RMB 112.94 million
($16.46 million/ €13.81 million), an increase
of 290.62% year-on-year. Ninestar explained
that affected by COVID-19 pandemic in the
first half of 2020, the global printer industry
was severely hit, and the overall business of
the industry fell by double-digit numbers.
Ninestar reported that Lexmark has
effectively maintained the company's
profitability by implementing a series of
effective cost reduction and management
cost saving measures.
During the reporting period, the
consumable asset package achieved operating
income of RMB 1,491 billion ($217.21
million/ €182.45 million), an increase of
23.37% year-on-year. The company recorded
net profit of RMB 154.35 million ($22.48
million/ €18.88 million) for the segment,
an increase of 1.98% year-on-year. The main
reason why the increase in revenue was
higher than the increase in profit was that the
sales growth in the first half of the year was
dominated by household models and highvalue
products, Ninestar explained.
The company said that gradually normal
production capacity resumed from March,
with continuous innovation in toner
cartridge shipments from April to May. Since
May, the shipment volume of ink cartridges
has continuously exceeded 10 million,
achieving a record high. In the first half of
the year, the company actively expanded
overseas online sales by more than 40% over
the same period last year.
In terms of products: the sales of
remanufactured toner cartridges and
remanufactured ink cartridges increased by
more than 50% year-on-year.
SCC achieved operating income of RMB
320.83 million ($46.73 million/ €39.25
million), a year-on-year decrease of 25.49%,
and net profit of RMB -12.55 million (-$1.83
million/ -€1.53 million), a year-on-year
decrease of 307.44%. The main reason is
Europe and the US market has been affected
by the new crown epidemic, the demand
for core products has dropped sharply,
and the scale of manufacturing costs and
procurement costs is uneconomic, Ninestar
explained. During the reporting period, more
than 250 new products have been launched. ■
AROUND THE INDUSTRY
NORTH AMERICA Brother, Aster Graphics, USITC, GEO
Brother v Aster USITC “to and fro” continues
Earlier in July, Administrative Law Judge Clark S. Cheney (ALJ) recommended that the Commission issue a general
exclusion order and various cease-and-desist orders following Brother’s complaint to the USITC.
Aster responded to the initial
determination (ID) of Administrative Law
Judge Clark S. Cheney, requesting that its
newly designed cartridges specifically get
excluded from any
of the GEOs, LEOs or CDOs issued
by the USITC.
Aster said in its statement: “Were the
ID to be adopted without making clear
that Aster’s Newly Designed Products are
outside the scope of any remedial orders,
the parties’ agreement regarding the new
designs would be nullified against their
wishes and the exclusion of Aster’s Newly
Designed Products would adversely affect
competitive conditions in the United
States economy by depriving United States
consumers of non-infringing
toner cartridge product choices.”
Aster states that “there is nothing
in the ID reflecting or appreciating
the significance of the Joint Stipulation or
the Agreement Aster executed with Brother
with regard to Aster’s new designs.”
Within days of Aster issuing the statement
to the USITC, Brother responded with
a motion to strike Aster Graphics, Inc.’s
statement. Brother requests that “the
Commission strike Respondent Aster
Graphic’s Statement on the Public Interest
(“Aster’s PI Statement”) (EDIS Doc
ID 717995) for failure to comply with
Commission Rule 210.50.”
Brother states: “Aster’s PI Statement,
which alleges that the ALJ made an
“error” and seeks a carve-out for certain
of its products from the recommended
General Exclusion Order (“GEO”), is an
impermissible petition for review of the
ID/RD, rather than a true public interest
statement under Commission Rule
210.50(a)(4)(i).”
Brother also corrected in its motion
that it has not stipulated that Aster’s new
designs do not infringe, but that “the Newly
Designed Products “will not be covered
by any remedial order that issues in this
Investigation” and that Brother “will not
argue or otherwise contend” that the Newly
Designed Products infringe the Asserted
Patent Claims in this Investigation—a
stipulation Brother made solely “to avoid
litigating certain issues relating to certain
products in this Investigation and to
streamline this Investigation.” ■
in the face of the advancing pandemic
and its implications for our sponsors,
AROUND THE INDUSTRY
EUROPE ECS, The Greener Side, Circular Economy
ECS expands to Australia, reports impressive growth and
calls for increased efforts towards a circular economy
Effective Consumable Solutions (ECS) announced the addition of a new distributor as part of their already
successful distributor scheme and its collection arm, ECS The Greener Side (TGS), the Collector of the Year,
has experienced exceptional growth for their toner cartridge recycling service despite current circumstances.
The Remanufacturer and Collector
of the year is delighted to announce
the addition of Toner On Demand
to their portfolio of distributors as their
Authorised Distributor for Australia.
Toner On Demand are one of the largest
distributors of toners and inks in Australia
who aim to provide superior quality at
competitive prices. With an already large
range of products, Toner On Demand
will now gain complete access to ECS’s
complete range of remanufactured,
compatible and original consumables
across all major manufacturer brands.
Director Chris Fink added: “We’ve
gained yet another fantastic partner
in Toner On Demand as one of our
authorised distributors – a Partnership
which will be extremely beneficial
to both sides. ECS’s remanufactured
products will continue to grow their
reputation overseas while providing our
Partners’ customers with fantastic, high
quality UK remanufactured toners
at competitive prices”
The company added that the benefits
of being an authorised ECS Distributor
go far beyond performance, profitability
and convenience and that one of the main
advantages of their distributor agreement
is the ability to gain exclusivity within an
area/region/country for their entire range
of products.
Where other areas of the recycling
industry have struggled due to forced
closures and difficulties to meet new
COVID-19 operating requirements,
The Greener Side said it has pressed on,
working closely with more and more
local authorities, OEM manufacturers
and signing new government and council
contracts.
Adrian Lovatt, Director of Recycling,
said that The Greener Side’s ability to
operate seamlessly regardless of the change
in circumstances, combined with their
already high standard of service is what
has allowed them to reach their recent
achievements.
Director of ECS, Chris Fink, said:
“The Greener Side is a major branch
of our business providing a key
function in returning cartridges to our
remanufacturing plant where they can be
remanufactured into fully functioning
products, reducing the amount of
empty cartridges on the market that are
incinerated or sent to landfill. TGS is also
a major factor in our contribution to a
UK circular economy, which has always
remained one of our priorities.”
The Greener Side recycle over 1,000,000
toner cartridges every single year,
preventing thousands of cartridges
from entering landfill and reducing a
potential enormous negative impact on
the environment. The remanufacturer
and recycler strives to reuse every single
cartridge that it can, and even ones which
cannot be remanufactured are stripped
down to each raw material and recycled
with their approved recycling partners
who reuse each raw material in entirely
new products.
ECS has suggested that all industries,
including the remanufacturing industry
must increase efforts to push towards
circularity - a more circular economy
which reuses resources rather than
requiring the constant use of new
raw materials. The Study by The Pew
Charitable Trusts suggests that at the
worlds current rate of operation there
will be double the amount of plastic
on the market in 20 years’ time, while the
amount of plastic entering our oceans will
have tripled.
ECS’s Director Felicity Rabbitte said:
“Working towards a complete circular
economy will enable us to reduce the
amount of plastic entering our oceans by
80%, reduce greenhouse gas emissions
by 25% and create thousands of jobs,
however, at our current rate of production,
combined with our methods of packaging,
we’re going in the opposite direction to
where we should be heading.”
For our industry, ECS suggests that the
use of remanufactured cartridges and
increased level of recycling are becoming
more necessary in order to combat the
consequences of our current levels of
pollution. The remanufacturer has also
suggested three major goals to keep in
mind for all businesses:
• Eliminate plastics which are not
necessary – in particular the plastics
used in packaging
• Design effective products – ones that
are made of materials that can and
will be recycled and don’t use any
product that cannot be reused
• Innovative – create business models
and actions which work towards a
circular economy rather than away
from it
During their own processes, ECS
explained, that not a single material goes
to waste during their remanufacturing and
recycling processes, even parts which are
no longer required or are damaged. These
specific items are sent to their approved
recycling partners who make further use
of the materials, therefore prolonging their
lifecycle and reducing the need for more
raw materials. ■
A busy month for Ninestar….
The company has had a busy month receiving prestigious Blue Angel Environmental Award, announcing the first
Chief Printing Officers, adding a new automated production line in its factory and announcing the start
of the building project for its employee complex.
G&G, a leading provider of printing
consumables has announced that their
range of replacement HP / Canon
cartridges has received the prestigious
Blue Angel certificate for environmental
excellence.
The Blue Angel award is issued to
products that meet a high standard of
ecological performance. Certified products
are recognized for achievements such
as efficient energy consumption, use of
recycled paper and recyclable materials,
and low waste. Systems must meet strict
regulations for emissions of dust, heat,
ozone, and noise.
Started in 1978, the Blue Angel is an
environmental certification recognized
and respected worldwide. Backed by the
German federal government, the Blue
Angel is supported by the Environmental
Label Jury, the Federal Ministry for the
Environment, Nature Conservation,
Building and Nuclear Safety, the Federal
Environmental Agency and RAL gGmbH.
It highlights products that are more
environmentally friendly than alternative
products. In addition, products with the
Blue Angel label fulfil their intended
function to a high level of quality.
G&G said it is China’s first-ever
compatible printing supplies brand to
receive Blue Angel certification. “The
standards set by the Blue Angel place a
particular focus on examining the impact
that products have on the environment,
which require G&G to design and
manufacture products with environmental
responsibility in mind,” said Ni Ming,
Director of Ninestar Quality Management
Department. “We are honoured to
receive this certification because it is
promoted by respected, independent and
credible German public institutions.”
Ninestar continues to invest in the
manufacturing automation and has
recently launched a new fully automated
production line dedicated to the assembly
of patented and dependable replacements
for HP CF226 series toner cartridges.
Ninestar explained that implementation
of this line was to stabilise quality and to
keep up with the demand for Ninestar’s
popular product, its patented replacements
for HP CF226 series, which feature
Ninestar’s latest patented workaround for
the Canon dongle gear products.
“We believe that the opening of this
new fully automated line will elevate
customer benefits to the next level,” said
Johnson Qiang, Vice General Manager of
Ninestar Image and Vice General Manager
of Printing Consumables BU, Ninestar
Corporation. “This new intelligent
manufacturing line supports fast delivery,
increased cost efficiency and consistent
high quality standards. We’re confident the
products manufactured by this new line
will amaze our partners and users.”
Ninestar began investing in automation
in 2012. Today, much of Ninestar’s ink
cartridge production has been automated
and four fully automated toner cartridge
production lines have come online.
The first CPO announced was Joewan
centre located in Seoul, South Korea.
Although any individual, organisation
or company can apply for CPO, Jesaeng
Hospital’s participation was still a
surprise and welcome news to G&G,
the company said.
The Ninestar employee residential
project is located on 78,000m2 of land in
Pingsha Town, Zhuhai, near the popular
Wenloushan Park. The land was acquired
by Ninestar in December, 2019 for CNY
634 million (€78 million / $92 million).
The employee residential project is located
3.5 kilometers away from Ninestar’s highend
reduced to just 10 minutes.
In a deal recently signed between Ninestar
and Foshan based Country Garden, the
property development and management
company will firstly develop and then
operate the Ninestar residential project.
With 125,000 employees and revenues
Print-Rite Pelikan expands Synaxon relationship
and announces new hires
Following the successful launch with Synaxon UK, Print-Rite Pelikan Germany have
expanded the relationship to launch the Pelikan printing supplies range with Synaxon AG in Germany.
This partnership will mean that Synaxon
dealers in Germany will be able to access
and supply their customers with the Pelikan
brand laser toner cartridges, ink cartridges,
ribbons and labels and from August
onwards, the Pelikan bio-based cartridges.
Steve Weedon, CEO of PrintRite Pelikan
GmbH commented: "We are very excited
about the launch with Synaxon Germany.
There is a natural synergy between their
approach to the market and their dealers
and the way we have been developing our
business in Germany and across Europe".
Weedon went on to say: "The Pelikan brand
delivers consistent high quality, backed up
by a three-year guarantee. In fact, the Pelikan
brand was actually founded in Germany
nearly 180 years ago and as such it has
incredible brand recognition with End Users
and Dealers".
Synaxon’s members will be automatically
approved to join the Pelikan Rewards Club.
This is a rewards programme which allows
dealers to claim points for every Pelikan
product that they sell. The points can be
accumulated and claimed against hundreds
Print-Rite Pelikan said that in addition to
rewards for dealers, Pelikan have gone even
further to help dealers win business and retain
customers by extending the Pelikan Rewards
Club to end user customers. They too can
register to benefit in exactly the same way.
When asked to summarise his strategy for
growth in Germany Weedon said: “This is
an incredibly exciting time. We have joined
forces with Synaxon Germany, who are very
strong and well placed to help customers
benefit from Pelikan printing supplies. We
have a fantastic way of rewarding dealers and
end-user customers and to help increase repeat
purchase with our Pelikan Rewards Club
and we have a robust channel pricing strategy
which helps encourage high margin sales.
“But there’s more - in August we will
finally launch the Pelikan bio-based cartridge
range. These amazing new products will
change the game! 48% of the toner powder
is derived from organic material and 57%
of the actual plastics are also derived from
organic materials. The cartridges are specially
“But, if they were to end up in landfill
they would actually start to decompose
at around 180 days in typical composting
conditions. These new Bio Based cartridges
will completely change the game and any
end-user customer who genuinely cares
about the environment or has serious CSR
targets or ambitions simply has to consider
using them.”
The company also announced new
additions to its management team.
Print-Rite Pelikan Solutions announced
that Henrik Montgomery joins the
Steve Weedon CEO of Print-Rite Pelikan
Solutions and Print-Rite Europe Limited.
The company said that Neil’s contribution
to take the platform forward in a few short
months has been at a break-neck pace
that has improved customer service as
well as provided state of the art inventory
management controls and EDI customer
connections.
“We still have a lot to do and the emphasis
is on customer services and great customer
experiences,” said Collings.
Print-Rite Pelikan Solutions added: “Neil
enjoys biking, and running and obviously
Lycra as he is often seen wearing numerous
colours of shorts and shirts in the office,
however he found time recently to hook up
the SAP system to Synaxon AG systems as
the two companies contracted to supply
and distribute the Pelikan brand of laser and
The COVID-19 pandemic has fuelled a
Hubei Dinglong celebrate 20 years
in 2020. The lucky 202020.
As 2020 opened, Hubei Dinglong was preparing to celebrate twenty years, a milestone in today’s
industry, but the virus took hold and the company, like the rest of the industry has had to face
many challenges. A 20-year anniversary is a milestone that should not go unspoken. As the company
marks this important milestone it is time to look back on the business growth, accomplishments
and relationships built with customers, staff and the community.
Founded in 2010 by Mr. Shuang Quan
Zhu and his brother, the company is best
known for their chemical toner. But in the
early days Hubei Dinglong (HDL) actually
started out manufacturing charge control
agents for Japanese toner manufacturers.
The colour toner project only got
underway in 2005 and it was 2011 before
colour toner was available commercially
and another year before it was available
internationally. Today HDL produces
thousands of tons of toner and an
awful lot more!
In 2005 chemical toner was exclusively
for the OEMs who either developed
the toner themselves or with their
OEM manufacturing partners. Some
commentators felt that chemical toner
would be the beginning of the demise of
the aftermarket who could not produce
FEATURED
chemical toner or afford the $50 kilo price
point. Spherardised pulverised toner
because the toner of choice that met
the need for finer particle size and a
lower price point.
It was a heady time as manufacturers of
pulverised toners looked at entering the
chemical toner market. In India, NAND
IPL were starting from the ground up
to build a chemical toner business with
consistent quality ad an affordable price
point, but never really got the in depth
commercialisation off the ground to
capture significant market share.
For the winners, the rewards were strong,
but the challenges were many. On paper,
chemical toner is a simple process, but
The focus is across functional chemical
materials, integrated circuit design and
process, aftermarket print consumables
and research and development.
▲ Mr. Shuang Quan Zhu
the manufacturing technology, materials
development and the manufacturing
process all had to be developed from
scratch. The biggest challenge of course
was the huge amount of intellectual
property wrapped around chemical toner.
But there is much more to HDL than toner.
The focus is across functional chemical
materials, integrated circuit design and
process, aftermarket print consumables
and research and development. Today
Hubei Dinglong is a national high-tech
enterprise, national tech innovation model
enterprise, national intellectual property
rights model enterprise.
From their headquarters in the Wuhan
has over 10 wholly-owned or holding
In Europe Hubei Dinglong is represented
industry veteran Ian Copsey. Here is his take
on working for HDL:
I sometimes struggle to believe that 29 Years
ago when I first became involved with the
European Cartridge Remanufacturing
business that OPC Prices were $13.75
(€11.64) for an HP SX OPC and a typical
Kilo of HP Mono Toner was $30 (€25) -
1991 was a long time back and yes my hair
was darker!
The importance of this journey in our
industry has helped me appreciate today what
European toner cartridge remanufactures
need and want from a sophisticated chemical
colour toner manufacturer like Hubei
Dinglong Co., Ltd.
Having spent the last eight years
representing Hubei Dinglong Co., Ltd in
pursuit of European business it is clear to
see they can meet the high standards of
performance & service required by European
Remanufactures.
As in all business, integrity, honesty and
transparency are the key aspects of a customer
relationship. I think for some European
customers these can be the biggest challenges
to overcome when working with Asian
suppliers. What I find particularly rewarding
is that many customers we started with eight
years ago still work with us today and those
that were the “slow adopters” in 2015 are now
the happy customers in 2020.
Having personally supported numerous
customer visits and audits to our facility
in Wuhan it is clear the biggest surprise for
most visitors is the level of investment made
into R&D in both staff and equipment but
also time taken to test and reverse engineer
the OEM Toner or Carrier. Often customers
depart from these visits with a very different
view of who and what Hubei Dinglong is
as a company. They then understand we
are a Chemical Company that came to the
Imaging Industry 20 years ago and now lead
the development of sophisticated chemical
colour toner through significant investment.
High quality product performance is a
given in 2020, but the expectation to meet
ongoing product continuity and offer a Toner
that can sit within a customer’s BOM and
offer same output for its entire life cycle is
another challenge. For this reason, we always
offer customers a certificate of analysis for
each order / batch of toner they purchase,
thus assuring the performance is the same
compared to the original product they
specified and tested Months or Years ago.
This open and honest approach has
certainly won us praise and confidence
Of course, at times raw materials or
production sites can change based on
external factors. However, we always advise
our customers and give them the chance to
re-verify material in the unlikely event of a
change. This open and honest approach has
certainly won us praise and confidence from
many customers as was the case with our
recent Brother Toner transition.
It is rewarding to read below the positive and
supportive comments from our customers
as they congratulate us on our 20 Year
Anniversary within the imaging industry –
From a UK customer – “We have had
a very successful partnership with Ian
Copsey & Hubei Dinglong for over 5 years and
find them to be a reputable company that
supplies high end Laser & Copier Toner Powder
which is supported by professional Sales &
Technical Teams who are readily available to
show support if and when required. Supplies of
product are available through their European
Distribution network which means orders for
product can be turned around from point of
order within 2/3 days. As a company we would
like to congratulate them on their 20 th
anniversary and are looking forward to the next
5 years in our partnership.”
From a European customer
- “Our company is working with
HUBEI DINGLONG group since a long time.
The quality of HUBEI DINGLONG chemical
colour toners is highly appreciated and
corresponds to the high quality standard we
need to satisfy our customers. The strength of
HUBEI DINGLONG is also coming from a
strong involvement on new products, the wide
range of products and the excellent service
provided. We are focusing on future and are
still sharing many projects. Reliable partners
allow us to offer our customers the best cartridges
quality and HUBEI DINGLONG is one of
the successful partnerships we are building with
our suppliers.”
From a European customer
- “Working with Hubei Dinglong has
been a pleasure since I joined the company in
2017, especially with Ian our main contact.
Their professionalism, honest feedback and their
knowledge of our product portfolio needs makes
our co-operation easy. I really trust we will work
together for many years to come.
From a German customer
– “We have been using Hubei Dinglong
toner, in our products since their early days in
Europe, almost 7 years ago. This color
polymerized toner has a high level of consistency
and printing characteristics equal to or better
than OEM toners. The technical support thru
Ian and their technical division from China
displays true devotion to customer satisfaction.”
Summary - In a challenging market it is
particularly re-assuring to read these positive
and supportive comments. Our customers
sell on their own brand and thus promote
as a European sustainable product. Hubei
Dinglong is proud to be part of their story
albeit for many a silent partner. We look
forward too many more productive Years with
our European Remanufacturing clients. ■
HP offers a deal to
European remanufacturers
HP has been reaching out to European remanufacturers to encourage
them to support an OEM voluntary agreement and offers a new
exclusive programme.
FEATURED
A R TIC L E
HP has been reaching out to European
remanufacturers to garner support for
the Voluntary Agreement (VA) OEMs,
Remanufacturers, EU officials and others
are currently negotiating ahead of the
January 2021 deadline. In the event that
a VA is not concluded the EU would
introduce legislation as part of “The Green
Deal” published earlier this year.
The OEM’s (Brother, Canon, Epson,
HP, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Lexmark,
OKI, Sharp, Toshiba and Xerox) meet
through their EuroVAprint ASBL which is
a non-profit association grouping all major
manufacturers of imaging equipment that
operate in Europe.
EuroVAprints current President is HP’s
Sara Rodriguez Martinez who is on
record of favouring “a VA over regulation
because a specific understanding and the
technological knowledge will most probably
not be reflected to a sufficient extent in
a regulation” and that a “VA would be
timewise more efficient than a regulation”
The VA was originally signed in February
2011 and applied to hardware and did not
include consumables (cartridges), which
came under the WEEE directive later.
In discussion a new agreement aims to
reduce the environmental footprint
of imaging equipment and consumables
and help customers make informed
choices during purchase and usage of
the equipment and consumables.
For the first time European remanufacturers
are now being engaged to discuss how a VA
would only be applicable to the signatories
and supporters of the new VA.
Currently, 3T Supplies AG/Peach, ARMOR
SAS, Clover Imaging Group, Delacamp,
KMP AG and Printerre are in negotiations
regarding both the VA and a series of Bilateral
Agreements (BA) between the respective
OEMs and the aftermarket supporters.
The BA’s would come into force once the
VA was agreed.
A person familiar with both the VA and BA
told The Recycler that HP would be proposing
a new programme to Remanufacturing
companies under a bilateral arrangement,
where the remanufacturer is a supporting
signatory to the VA. The BA would be
offered on commercial reasonable terms (not
For the first time European remanufacturers
are now being engaged to discuss how a VA
would only be applicable to the signatories and
supporters of the new VA.
yet disclosed) but could include access to
OEM empty cartridges, OEM chip resetting,
functioning ink or toner level gauge, for
printing with reused cartridges in OEM
signatory products.
A BA would be a separate agreement between
HP and the remanufacturing company for
this programme.
ETIRA, the European Toner and Inkjet
Remanufacturers Association commented on
a recent EU study (Task 1-7 assessment) on the
deliverables of the last Voluntary Agreement.
They found:
• Cartridges create 2.5% of total small and
medium electronic appliances’ waste
• Both the Small Office (SOHO)
and home printer repair rate is zero
• The average operating time for home
printer usage is only five hours during
its expected four years’ life.
• The average total operational cartridge
life is just 19 minutes
• Globally, the recovery thresholds for
producers are far from being reached,
and some OEM’s still incinerate 100 % (!)
of what they recover
ETIRA commented on the report
“it is shocking to see that today you need
26 cartridges to print 10,000 pages vs. just
one cartridge 20 years ago!”
Regarding the VA, “ETIRA fears that
it will be close to impossible for a Voluntary
Agreement to achieve these objectives.”
“It is a crucial time,” said David Connett,
Partner at Connett & Unland GbR and
a member of the ETIRA board. “If an
agreement can be reached, a VA could
be in place as early as next year but would
only be binding on the signatories. Nonsignatories
would not be obliged to abide
by the VA or be able to benefit from any
OEM bilateral agreements.
Legislation on the other hand, would cover
the whole industry and ensure everyone is
operating by the same rules in a similar way
to the motor industry, but it will take longer
to put in place.
Market forces and the COVID situation has
the OEMs with their backs to the wall at the
moment. The market is rapidly changing
and their old linear business model no longer
appears to be fit for purpose in the 21st
century. It is my view that the OEM landscape
will change rapidly over the next three to five
years with as few as eight OEMs surviving.
A VA will enable them to kick legislation into
the long grass and avoid the long overdue
dismantling of the linear business model.” ■
EUROPE Biuromax, Thermal Rolls, New products, Bisfenol-free
Biuromax adds thermal rolls to product line
The company has added a brand new product line to its portfolio, Bisfenol-free thermal rolls for cash registers.
Thermal rolls are receipts in cash registers
at every shop or service point that are
obliged to keep sales records. Regardless
of goods or services offered these rolls
are a necessary part of office equipment.
Biuromax explains:
What are thermal rolls?
These are currently the most popular
option of a cash receipt printout. The rolls
are made of paper that is covered with a
chemical layer that prints when heated.
Advantages of such method is printout
speed and quality. This characteristic paper
is wound on a roll and used in many other
printing devices: cash registers, payment
terminals, shop printers, parking meters
etc. We all come across these technologies
every day, namely printed thermal
receipts. Meanwhile, recent research shows
that receipts printed on thermal foil with
use of BPA are harmful to people's health.
BPA & BPS FREE
Above-mentioned harmfulness of BPA
thermal rolls has been analysed by a series
of independent research teams worldwide.
Their results clearly confirm scientists'
fear: any paper used to manufacture a
cashier roll, containing Bisfenol A (BPA)
and Bisfenol S (BPS) is dangerous to health.
The above-mentioned harmfulness of BPA
thermal rolls has been analysed by a series
of independent research teams worldwide.
Biuromax believes that their results clearly
confirm scientists' fear: any paper used
to manufacture a cashier roll, containing
Bisfenol A (BPA) and Bisfenol S (BPS)
is dangerous to health. The latter is the
reason why use of BPA & BPS in thermal
rolls was forbidden in all EU countries,
starting from January 2, 2020. All receipts
handled from that date need to be free of
this substance. BPA/BPS FREE products
to cash registers can be found in our offer.
In May 2020 Biuromax started
cooperation with the biggest thermal
roll manufacturer in Poland which allows
the company to offer competitive pricing,
fast stock delivery and high quality
durable print reproduction as standard.
Our cash register rolls are safe to use and
comply with latest standards.
Biuromax, pleased with this new
addition, said: “Our offer includes thermal
rolls that are made of certified, bisfenolfree
thermal substance. We also execute
personalised orders - black and white or
multicolor rolls with individual design. A
company logotype can be included for a
personalized fiscal paper (which may turn
into a distinguishing company feature in
the market). Customised receipt sizes are
available for all non-standard parameters of
sleeve (thimble).”
Thermal rolls are required to be durable
and long life print reproduction. Biuromax
says it guarantees its readability and
durability for up to five years (under
appropriate storage conditions). Benefits
for longer lasting print images make it
easier for people to manage warranties,
reconcile future tax issues and many more.
These benefits not only save time and
money but decrease the burden on the
environment by eliminating the need to
photocopy multiple receipts onto more
stable printed paper.
The proper condition, aesthetics and
durability of rolls depend on original
packing. Rolls are welded with shrinkwrapped
film in 10/8/6 pieces as standard.
The rolls' quality - monitored and repeated
regularly - stands behind failure-free use of
printing devices for many
years, Biuromax added. ■
