WINE SELECTION
2020 / 2021

WELCOME
Welcome to the First Edition of “The List” from Edwards Wine Merchants.
Established by Terry and Suzanne Edwards some 40
years ago, “Edwards of Leighton Buzzard” has developed
into the composite On Trade drinks supplier it is today.
We are proud to offer a comprehensive range of beers,
soft drinks and spirits to our customers, accompanied by
a current list of well over 300 wines from all over the
world, including some that we import exclusively into
the UK.
We are proud to be members of the Society of Vintners,
the largest independent wine buying group in the UK,
enabling us to access wines from across the wine
making world.
Wine is defined as being the “total or partial fermentation
of fresh grapes”. Over 30 billion litres are produced each
year, about 75% of it in Europe. Consumption is largely
concentrated on those regions where it is produced and
the major sources of wine for the UK market are Europe
(Italy, France and Spain), Australia, New Zealand, South
America (Chile and Argentina) and South Africa.
There are several thousand grape varieties capable of
producing wine and very often the same grape may be
known by different names in different countries and even
different names in different regions of the same country.
The most popular varietals are well known to drinkers in
the UK. Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay
being the leading varietals for white wine and Merlot,
Shiraz and Malbec leading the way for red. When it
comes to rosé wine, many drinkers may not realise that
the colour of a wine comes from the pigment contained
in the skin rather than the colour of the juice. If you
squeeze a red grape, the juice will run clear the same
as a white grape.
Therefore, many rosé wines are less coloured versions
of darker red wines because the skins have been left
in contact with the juice for less time during the wine
making process.
There are many factors which affect the growing of
grapes and the production of wine, the weather arguably
being the leader with soil, pests and diseases also
contributing significantly.
The making of wine is an art form, much of which is of
no interest to the vast majority of us who simply want
to enjoy the end product so we hope that you will find
“The List” interesting, useful and that you will find at least
a few wines that will work well in your own business.
If you have any queries or need any assistance selecting
the ideal wines for your business or want some help in
building your staff’s confidence with wine, please ask
your account manager who will be only too pleased
to assist.
Thanks for reading and enjoy!
FRANCE
One of the most influential countries in terms of wine
production and exports around the world. It led the way
in European wine legislation and most internationally
recognised grape varieties originated from France.
French wine-growers have a unique variety of soils,
microclimates and grapes available to them and no
matter what sort of wine you like to drink - Australian,
Spanish, Italian, New Zealand – the chances are that in
some way, at some time, its flavour has been influenced
by the wines of France.
The idea of ageing wine in small barrels made from
new oak originated in France, as did most of the grapes
commonly found in wines from the “New World”.
GERMANY
German vineyards lie in the southern half of the country
and are typically close to the northern limit for wine
production. The climate is cool and damp and may be
described as “marginal” in wine making terms, leading to
the production of wines that are lower in alcohol and high
in acidity. In some poor years, the grapes may not fully
ripen at all.
The system of wine quality grading in Germany is distinct
in that it is dependent on grape ripeness rather than
vineyard location.
ITALY
Continually competing with France for the title of largest
volume producing country, cultivation of “the vine” in
Italy was developed by two different peoples. The Greeks
brought their knowledge through the South from Sicily
and in the North, the Etruscans. Little is really known
about the Etruscan people as they were destroyed by the
growing power of the Romans. Traditionally, the wines of
Italy have been made only with indigenous grapes, and
many still are, but international varieties have increasingly
become more popular with winemakers.
Easily the two major successes for Italian winemakers
in recent years have been the huge increases in the sales
of Pinot Grigio and Prosecco, both thanks to their easy
drinking styles.
SPAIN
Spain has more land “under vines” than any other country
but ranks only third in terms of production. The wines
produced in Spain are mostly dry in style and can be red,
white or rosé. Spain also produces sherry, an “aged” style
which is produced near Jerez in the south of the country.
In recent years as prosperity has increased the demand
for fine wine, new, more vibrant and vigorous styles have
emerged. White wine production has never been Spain’s
strength, with most regions struggling to find wines to
suit the modern styles and tastes. The notable exception
being the North West with its Albarinos.
Spain also produces its traditional method sparkling wine
“Cava”. Much maligned in recent years and struggling
to compete with the easier drinking prosecco from
Italy which is pity as a good cava is easily able to rival
a champagne and cost so much less.
PORTUGAL
Portugal comprises a narrow coastal plain which rises
steeply to mountainous inland regions. South Westerly
winds from the Atlantic bring rain in the winter with
summers tending to be very hot. Portugal is probably
best known across the world for making port.
A “fortified”, mostly sweet red wine, whose production
is centred on the coastal town of Oporto.
Portugal is also well known for making “Vinho Verde”,
literally meaning “green wine”, not referring to its colour
but more its style which is fresh and best drunk young.
Wine is produced in several regions in the USA, but it is
the wines from California that are best known outside
it, and for good reason. Californian wine production
typically ranks in the top 5 global wine producers but
domestic demand can restrict their exports. In recent
years, “Zinfandel Blush” has become the principal
Californian wine available in the UK and it is unfortunate
therefore that many wine drinkers opinion on the wines
of the USA is clouded by this because when their power
is matched with finesse, Californian wines can compare
with and even outclass their European counterparts.
Although it will often cost a goodly amount to prove
this theory!
The sunny climate shows through in the nature of
the wines produced, often in styles reminiscent of
The Rhône Valley in France. Chardonnay, Sauvignon
and Viognier are key white varietals (with the Sauvignon
often oaked to produce what is referred to as “Fume
Blanc”) with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet
France being employed to produce wines styled as
“Bordeaux Blends” if not simply on their own. California’s
biggest contribution to the wine world however is in the
production of BIG Zinfandels (that’s red as well as the
“Blush” form!!)
AUSTRALIA
Reliability, flavour and simple labelling have all
contributed to help Australia establish itself as a major
producer of high volume selling wines. Many regions
prove much too warm to produce grapes such as Pinot
Noir and Sauvignon Blanc but these varietals have
been established in the more cooler areas. Australian
producers embarked upon a major planting programme
in the 1990’s which saw them able to produce cheaper
wines without having to rely on more inferior varietals.
From the mid 1980’s until well into the 2000’s Australia
arguably showed the world how to make and market the
selling of wine.
Not that Australia is perfect, over-oaking and the
production of wines that although technically correct,
lack the soul of the French “terroir” may differentiate the
great from the good, but generally speaking Australian
wine production is known for quality, consistency
and value for money.
Wine production in Argentina has developed significantly
in the last 20 years or so. Varietals such as Malbec have
become so popular around the world that many drinkers
believe it is native to the country although maybe it is the
focus on a smaller number of varietals that has enabled
Argentinian producers to create more impressive and
commercially popular wines than the more “rustic”
the early 1970’s is quite remarkable and indeed has led
of some varietals, notably Sauvignon Blanc which was
only first planted in the Marlborough region in 1973
and which started to make the rest of the world think
in the mid 1980’s. It was only when other promising
wines from the likes of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and
sparkling wines started to appear that the sceptics
were forced to reconsider.
New Zealand producers continue to experiment with
varietals that many European doubters believe will never
succeed but thankfully the pioneers ignore them and
continue to blaze a trail.
CHILE
Chile first made its mark on wine production with
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which offered softer and
more juicy styles than those more typically from France,
however its growers are now offering much more. Now
etched firmly in folklore is the former “confusion” over
Carmenere which until the mid 1990’s was incorrectly
identified as Merlot meaning that between 60% and 90%
of vineyards had been incorrectly named and at a time
when Carmenere had become almost extinct in its
native Bordeaux.
On Trade wine lists invariably feature Chilean Merlot
and Sauvignon Blanc, wines that have become major
volume players commercially, driven by their consistency
and value for money. The global success of these key
varietals has enabled producers to expand their portfolios
with Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay
enjoying significant volumes and Carmenere now well
established in its own right along with Malbec, Syrah
and some Gewürztraminer.
There is a long history of wine making in South Africa,
but it is fair to say that its wine has struggled to match
the success of its key New World competitors. A key
reason for this is identified as the impact of the apartheid
era which meant South African wine makers were
largely cut off from international developments in both
technology and consumer taste. Improvements across
the board since the 1990’s have been significant with a
combination of ripe fruit flavours of a sunny climate and
European style structure delivering exciting wines and
SPARKLING
From Champagne at the top of the pile all the way down
through the various methods of producing wine with
bubbles, there is a wealth of choice and price to pay.
Production methods vary, from secondary fermentation
in bottle (the “champagne” or “traditional” method)
through secondary fermentation in a large tank to
wine carbonated in a way that would be used to make
i.e. lemonade.
Champagne continues to be the premium sparkling
wine of choice although volumes are significantly lower
than the more “easy drinking” and affordable current
favourite “Prosecco”.
Champagne is made using one of or a combination
of three possible grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot
Noir and Pinot Meunier) and must be produced in the
champagne region in Northern France. Other sparkling
wines employing the traditional method and which are
well worth looking out as are invariably just as good
and for a fraction of the cost are Cava (Spain), Cremant
(regionalised across France), Saumur (Loire Valley,
France). Most other countries producing wine will have
something to offer including England, whose sparkling
wines have become truly world class in recent years but
do carry a champagne price tag.
WINE STYLES
Red, White or Rosé?
From dry to sweet and light to full-bodied. Sparkling
or fortified. There are wines for every taste.
RED
Fresh, Fruity and lighter bodied
Simple and juicy for drinking today. If oak is present,
you will hardly notice it.
Loire French, Valpolicella and Bardolino from Italy,
Cinsault, some Pinot Noir’s.
Medium to full-bodied
Well flavoured but not “blockbusting”. Some oak ageing.
ROSÉ
For some, rosé is just for summer, or frankly never!
For others it is the best of both worlds or the world itself.
Bright, dark, dry, sweet.
Most red grape varieties are capable of making good
rosés but many rosés are a blend of white wine with a
dash of something red to colour as required. Some of
the best will typically be made from Grenache,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz (Syrah) or Merlot.
French Bordeaux, Italian Chianti and Montepulciano
d’Abruzzo, Rioja, Chilean Merlot, NZ Pinot Noir.
Full Bodied and powerful
Big, spiced and oaky. Mouth-filling flavour and texture.
Maybe tannic when young and need time to mature
and integrate.
Australian Shiraz, Argentinian Malbec, Rhône from
France, Italian Primitivo and Amarone. Californian
Zinfandel, Spanish Ribera del Duero.
WHITE
Crisp, dry and light bodied
Tend to be pale, young and without the influence of oak
and with a finish that is crisp and refreshing.
Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadet, Un-oaked Chardonnay,
Pinot Grigio, Garganega, Pecorino.
Aromatic and floral - Dry to medium-sweet
Tend to be marked out by their floral, spicy or fruity
aromas. Can be light or medium-full bodied.
Viognier, Riesling. Gewürtztraminer, Moscatel.
Tangy or steely, medium-bodied
Largely oak-free, assertive and sometimes pungent,
dry white wines with a zesty character.
NZ, Chile and Loire Sauvignon’s. Bordeaux whites,
Spanish Albarinho, Portugal and Austria.
Full bodied and richly flavoured
White wines with power and oaky depth.
Not just Chardonnay.
Chardonnay from the New World, Burgundies, Rhône,
Spain and Southern Italy.
Viognier, barrel fermented Chenin Blanc, White Rioja.
WINE STYLES
SPARKLING
Sparkling wines come in all shapes and sizes. The
quality market still dominated by Champagne and the
value, volume fizz by Italian Prosecco. The better value
“traditional” (or champagne) method will see you trying
French Cremant’s, Saumur and good quality Cava from
Spain. Most wine producing countries will produce some
“fizz” to varying degrees of success and the English
sparkling wine business has grown significantly in
quality, reputation and value in recent years. With many
reputable Champagne producers buying up significant
chunks of the English South Coast.
Champagne, Cremant’s and Saumur from France, Cava
from Spain, Prosecco from Italy. Australia, New Zealand,
the USA and England all produce good quality at varying
price points, using various grape varieties typical of
sparkling wine production and some more unusual.
Exploring wines and trying something new
One of the biggest challenges is getting the customer to
try something new. After all, they tend to know what they
like and further know that they are paying more in a pub
or restaurant than if they were buying to drink at home
and are reluctant to buy something they may not enjoy.
But still, it’s always worth giving the customer the chance
to say “No thanks” and so here are a few “If you like…..,
why not try….?” Suggestions to give to your staff when
trying to encourage your customer to trade up or try
something different.
If you like Unoaked Aussie Chardonnay, why not try a
French Chablis?
If you like Viognier, why not try an Argentinian Torrontes?
If you like Pinot Grigio, why not try a Muscadet or
Picpoul de Pinet?
If you like New Zealand Sauvignon, why not try
a Sancerre?
If you like Oaky whites, why not try White Rioja and
Southern Burgundies?
If you like lighter bodied reds, have you tried Valpolicella?
If you like Chilean Red, have you tried something
from Bordeaux?
If you like Pinot Noir, have you tried something from
Burgundy or even the South of France?
If you like Malbec, have you tried Aussie Shiraz or
Primitivo from Puglia?
