At Jackson Law we have made it our philosophy to create a
legal environment for clients where legal representation is not about
lawyers and legal staff controlling and dictating the representative
needs of clients, but rather about joining forces and standing
together with clients to strengthen the ability to best represent
their interests and achieve for them and their families a positive
result. To memorialize this philosophy so that it will continue to
be practiced and not be forgotten by those who work for our firm,
we have registered the trademark… “Together We Stand ® ”. So the
next time you need legal representation for you or your family,
visit our firm and together we will roll up our sleeves and take
Last year, I joined in on a friend’s
family holiday tradition of spending
an entire day baking cookies.
Nearly seven hours later, we had
a kitchen full of delicious cookies
and some amazing memories of
laughter, fun and singing along to
Christmas music. It was a tradition I
whole-heartedly embraced and look
forward to continuing with friends
and family for many years to come.
Baking cookies for the holidays
isn’t a new concept, and it’s one
that can be celebrated no matter
what your home life is like. If you
have kids, they will love mixing
ingredients and decorating their
own cookies. If you are an all-adult
household or even living on your
own, baking cookies with friends
is just as much fun as when you
were a kid. Below are some of my
favorite holiday cookies. They also
make excellent gifts for neighbors,
co-workers and anyone else with
a sweet tooth. Recipes courtesy of
allrecipes.com.
Sugar Cookies
The best thing about sugar cookies
is that you can use colored icing
to decorate them however you wish.
Children enjoy being creative and
hands-on with this baking delight.
For an even better result, use holiday
cookie cutters to shape the dough
into Christmas trees, snowmen,
angels and more.
Ingredients:
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Method:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a
small bowl, stir together flour, baking
soda and baking powder. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the
butter and sugar until smooth. Beat
in egg and vanilla extract. Gradually
blend the dry ingredients. Roll rounded
teaspoons of dough into balls (or
shape with cookie cutters), and place
onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake
8-10 minutes or until
golden brown. Let
stand on cookie sheet
2 minutes before moving
to wire racks to
cool. Once cool, decorate
as desired.
No-Bake
Preacher Cookies
We call these nobake
chocolate and
peanut butter cookies
preacher cookies
in my house. The
Southern tale is that
when you see the local
preacher coming
up the drive for a visit,
you have enough
time to make these
cookies and offer a
treat to your guest. I
just love the taste of
chocolate and peanut
butter together, and
the oatmeal gives it
a fantastic texture. Little hands will
love mixing these cookies almost
as much as their mouths will enjoy
eating them.
Ingredients:
2 cups white sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
powder
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup peanut butter
3 cups quick-cooking oats
Method:
In a saucepan over medium heat,
combine the sugar, cocoa, milk and
butter. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
Boil for 1 minute, then
remove from heat and stir in vanilla
extract, salt, peanut butter and oats.
Drop rounded spoonfuls onto waxed
HOW
TO ...
Bake Festive Holiday Cookies
Make Delicious Memories!
by Lauren Salinero
Spread holiday cheer and create unforgettable memories by
making fabulous holiday cookies.
paper. Allow cookies to cool for at
least 1 hour.
Gingerbread Cookies
Nothing says holiday cookies quite
like gingerbread, whether you’re using
it to build a gingerbread house
or just craving its unique taste. This is
another one that is great for decorating
and best when used with a cookie
cutter to make gingerbread men.
Ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Method:
Mix flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking
soda, nutmeg and salt in a large
bowl. Set aside. Beat butter and
brown sugar in a large bowl with
electric mixer on medium speed
until light and fluffy. Add molasses,
egg and vanilla extract. Mix well.
Gradually beat in flour mixture on
low speed until well-mixed. Press
dough into a thick, flat disk. Wrap
in plastic wrap, and refrigerate 4
hours or overnight. Preheat oven to
350 degrees. Roll out dough to 1/4-
inch thickness on lightly floured work
surface. Cut into gingerbread shapes
with cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart
on ungreased baking sheets. Bake
8-10 minutes or until edges of cookies
are set and just begin to brow.
Cool on baking sheets for 1-2 minutes.
Move to wire racks to cool completely.
Decorate as desired.
Snickerdoodles
Snickerdoodles happen to be one
of my favorite cookies. They are best
when a little firm on the outside and
soft and chewy on the inside. Their
cinnamon-sugar flavor is perfect for
the holidays.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
Method:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Cream together butter, shortening, 1
1/2 cups of sugar, eggs and vanilla.
Blend in flour, cream of tartar, baking
soda and salt. Shape rounded
spoonfuls of dough into balls. Mix 2
tablespoons of sugar and cinnamon
together. Roll balls of dough in cinnamon-sugar
mixture. Place 2 inches
apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Bake 8-10 minutes or until set but not
too hard. Remove immediately from
baking sheets to cool. ª

With the holidays just around the corner,
one of the best — and most-forgotten gifts —
is the gift of good health. Niral Patel, M.D.,
and the staff at Windermere Medical
Center believe preventative wellness is a
vital tool to managing health, yet many people
choose instead to be reactive, scheduling
an appointment only when something “doesn’t
feel right.” The fact is, many of the top risk factors
relating to illnesses are preventable, and
that’s why preventative care is so important
for the continued health of your family and
loved ones. For more information or to make
Never before has a home’s outdoor
space been more cherished or
vital. It’s not surprising that nearly
two-thirds of American homeowners
have either recently undertaken
or are in the process of upgrading
their home’s exterior, according to
porch.com. For those of you still in
the planning phase, professional designer
and TV personality Alison
Victoria, host of HGTV’s Windy
City Rehab, suggests four DIYfriendly
projects to undertake this fall
to turn your backyard into an outdoor
oasis.
• Deck it out. A great deck space
can add valuable square footage
to a home for al fresco dining, outdoor
fun or just a refreshing retreat
between Zoom meetings. The first
thing to remember when planning a
deck build is that materials matter.
Consider building with composite
decking, like Trex, which features a
beautiful wood-grain pattern without
Many homeowners are upgrading their outdoor space this fall.
the constant upkeep of wood. This
high-performance, low-maintenance
option won’t ever need sanding or
staining and only requires soap and
water cleanings to retain its color
and appearance for years to come.
“Trex is built to withstand the test of
time, which is one of the many reasons
Royal is thankful for our customers & we greatly
appreciate your business. Mention this ad and save
I chose to use it in my own backyard,”
Victoria said. “You can’t beat minimal
maintenance on a deck. As a bonus,
I love that it’s eco-friendly and made
from 95% recycled materials.”
• Go green. Put your green thumb
to use by starting a vegetable garden
or sprucing up your backyard
with new plants and seasonal flowers.
If you’re looking to create privacy,
a popular and eco-friendly
solution is to build a living wall that
can shield you from neighbors while
surrounding your outdoor space with
flowers and fresh herbs. Planter boxes
for a vertical wall are relatively
easy to build. If your skills are more
advanced, consider adding a drip irrigation
system so you don’t have to
worry about watering.
• Liven with lattice. For a clever —
and easy — design trick that adds
both personal style and functionality
to any outdoor space, consider
incorporating lattice. Perfect for enhancing
privacy or hiding unsightly
views, such as garbage cans and
lawn equipment, lattice is durable,
lightweight and easy to install. The
Trex LatticeWorks collection offers
exclusive styles, ranging from traditional
to art deco, in panels that can
be applied to structures, such as arbors,
trellises and gazebos, or used
as wainscoting or deck skirting.
• Create an outdoor room. Just
like the inside of your home, you can
establish separate outdoor areas
for relaxing, cooking, dining and
socializing. A pergola is perfect for
creating the look and feel of an outdoor
room, serving to frame a space
while adding a distinct, architectural
element. Incorporate traditionally interior
accents like plush furnishings,
accent pillows, throw blankets and
an area rug — all weather-resistant,
of course — to create an inviting and
comfortable outdoor haven.
“When it comes to backyard design,
pergolas remain on-trend due
to their versatility and limitless design
possibilities,” Victoria said. “They
are great for adding definition —
and drama — to any deck.”
The average American home has
nine DIY jobs that need to be tackled,
according to a study conducted
by porch.com. Fall is the perfect time
to give your home a little TLC and
start checking off projects on your todo
list. Here are five easy fall tasks to
get your home ready for the upcoming
season:
• Paint the front door. Nothing
gives your home an instant face-lift
like a freshly painted front door.
Painted exterior doors can boost
curb appeal, add character and provide
a trendy but tasteful first impression
of your home. Choose a color
that will make your front door pop,
and improve the look of your home’s
exterior in less than an afternoon.
• Repair holes in the drywall.
Whether the damage is small from
a picture frame nail or anchor or as
large as doorknob damage, DAP’s
new Eclipse Rapid Wall Repair
Patches make repairing holes in drywall
so fast and easy, anyone can
do it. DAP’s Eclipse provides a durable,
mess-free repair that requires
no spackling, sanding or additional
Must-Do Home
tools. Simply patch the damage, and
it’s ready to paint immediately, allowing
projects to be finished in minutes
rather than hours or days.
• Freshen up the landscaping.
Planting new flowers or shrubbery is
an easy way to bring pops of fall colors
to the front of your home. Keep it
Florida’s
beautiful fall
weather offers
the perfect
opportunity to
tackle those
DIY home
improvement
projects you
put off during
the summer.
simple and pick plants in one or two
hues that contrast with the exterior
of your home. Regular mowing and
tending to weeds will always help
your front yard look its best.
• Seal window and doors. Small
gaps and cracks around windows
and doors can allow cold air and
rain to make its way inside. Keep
your home protected and warm during
the fall and winter seasons by replacing
worn exterior caulk with DAP
Dynaflex Ultra Advanced Exterior
Sealant. Dynaflex Ultra uses DAP’s
exclusive WeatherMax Technology
to create a waterproof and weatherproof
seal that won’t crack or discolor
over time.
• If applicable, replace the furnace
filter. Dirty filters mean your
furnace will likely work harder.
Regularly changing the filters in your
central air and heating system can
significantly improve its efficiency
and longevity while easing the pressure
on your wallet. In most homes,
filters should be changed monthly
during the heating season. You
should also have your furnace serviced
periodically to make sure it is
working properly and to help avoid
larger repairs later on when the temperature
drops.
Spending more time at home working,
learning and simply living? The
holiday season is the perfect opportunity
to gift your household with
lighting that enhances the feel and
function of your spaces.
To take advantage of the best
deals of the season, create your
“lighting wish-list” in advance of
Cyber Monday. Manufacturers such
as Progress Lighting are making it
easy to plan ahead. As you seek
inspiration, consider these designs,
which align with the latest home
decor trends:
• Bath and vanity — Create a
serene bathroom oasis capturing
the old and the new. Featuring a
clean, precise design, the Hansford
Collection’s four-light bath and vanity
bracket with an antique bronze finish
lends itself to farmhouse, coastal or
industrial interiors. For a modern yet
timeless look, consider the Carisa
Collection’s three-light vintage gold
bath light. Its metallic finish supports
glossy white glass globes.
• Ceiling fans — Add expansive
design to great rooms, living rooms
and bedrooms with statement-making
ceiling fans. The Springer Collection
Add Home Lighting
to Your Holiday Wish List
60-inch, 12-blade distressed walnut
coastal windmill fan, inspired by the
form and function of a windmill, has
an architectural bronze finish ideal
for farmhouse, industrial or transitional
interior settings. For sophisticated,
modern design, consider the Glandon
Collection 60-inch fan, which has fullrange
dimming and reversible blades
in driftwood and walnut.
Take
advantage
of deals to
upgrade
lighting this
holiday season.
• Chandelier — Complement rustic
and modern farmhouse home
décor in hallways, foyers and great
rooms, as well as urban industrial
and coastal interior settings, with
the four-light linear chandelier of the
Gulliver Collection. Its three circular
bands wrap together for an open
design. Dual-toned frame color combinations
of graphite feature weathered
gray accents. Or, create a soft,
muted glow with the four-light black
chandelier in the Durrell Collection.
Inside the sailcloth linen shade nestle
light bases on gently curved arms
coated in a beautiful finish.
• Close-to-ceiling — A new category
of vintage modern fixtures
takes center stage with a convertible
fixture in the Debut Collection.
Delicate details in a graphite finish
create a statement-making focal
piece for a variety of interiors —
whether mounted flush to the ceiling
or chain-hung — for a fitting stage to
feature nostalgic, vintage lamps. For
rustic flair, consider a close-to-ceiling
fixture in the Durrell Collection,
featuring a round open-cage frame
coated in a farmhouse-style matte
black finish.
• Outdoor — Enhance modern-
n HFUW receives grant
to help veterans
Heart of Florida United Way is
one of 19 organizations across the
United States to receive an NFL-Bob
Woodruff Foundation (BWF) Salute
to Service partnership grant in the
organization’s expedited cycle. It’s
been designated to the Mission
United COVID-19 Recovery Fund to
provide emergency financial assistance
to ensure at least 20 post-9/11
veterans who have lost income due
to COVID-19 sustain housing through
the crisis.
Mission United is a collective-impact
initiative and BWF local partner
that provides case management
and direct assistance in housing and
employment to ensure that veterans
and their families maintain stability
while seeking additional services.
A criterion to be considered to receive
this one-time assistance includes
being a post-9/11 veteran
who experienced job loss as a result
of COVID-19. The veteran (and
family) must also live in Orlando
or Orange, Osceola or Seminole
counties.
Applications are being accepted
through hfuw.org/bob-woodruffgrant.
Veterans must provide a
DD214 (proof of military), letter from
employer about employment status,
photo ID and lease/rental agreement.
All applications are accepted
on a first-come, first-serve basis as
limited funds are available. Eligible
applicants could qualify for up to
$2,500.
volunteers
Nathaniel’s Hope, a national,
Orlando-based 501(c)3 whose mission
is to enrich the lives of specialneeds
children and their families,
is gearing up for its 11th annual
Nathaniel’s Toy Store, which provides
thousands of toys each year to
5,000 VIP kids and siblings throughout
Central Florida. According to
co-founder and executive director
Marie Kuck, both volunteers and
toy drives/donations are especially
needed this year to meet a robust
demand in the wake of COVID-19.
The organization is especially in
need of groups to host toy drives,
as former corporate sponsorships
have been reduced due to COVID-
19-related budget cuts. Walgreens
remains on board as the anchor
sponsor with 200 store drop-off
points for toys at locations throughout
Central Florida.
While the organization has featured
an on-site brick and mortar toy
store where parents could shop for
their kids in the past, COVID-19 has
required a retooling of the event in
2020, which will feature a drive-thru
operation. Volunteers are needed to
help pick up, organize and sort gifts;
coordinate packaging and deliver
donations to VIP families throughout
the region.
Besides volunteering and toy drive
donations, Nathaniel’s Hope also
asks the community to help spread
the news to special needs families
who may be unaware that this program
is available Family pre-registration
