The future of sustainable cities, how will this influence the future of our cities?<br />
Sustainability has been a topic highly discussed over the recent<br />
years. Developers, Architects and Designers play a large role in<br />
shaping our current and future cities. Currently 55% of the world’s<br />
population live in urban areas, this is expected to increase to 68% by<br />
2050 and the built environment is responsible for half of all global<br />
energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. National Geographic<br />
states that moving forward we must anticipate challenges of the<br />
future and plan around the 10 principles of ecology, the economy,<br />
infrastructure, water, waste, food, mobility, culture, energy and<br />
liability.<br />
Smart buildings that have the ability to transform to meet changing<br />
housing, industrial and business needs, the implementation of sky<br />
gardens in tall skyscraper buildings to promote natural airflow, solar<br />
walls and windows incorporated into building facades, more green<br />
streets and strategic landscaping, integrational housing and more planning around self-contained<br />
neighbourhoods, designed to meet most daily needs within a 10-minute walk are some ideas noted to<br />
promote sustainable living.<br />
Let’s take a look at Vauban, Germany, one of the world’s most successful models for sustainable living,<br />
a city 3km from the city centre that comprises of approximately 2000 dwellings, 5,000 people, around<br />
600 jobs and is a car free living city. Strong participatory approach with citizens, partnerships with nonprofit<br />
organisations, specialist professionals in sustainability, the emergence of co-housing projects<br />
and incentives for those who do not own cars have contributed to the success of the city’s<br />
development. Perhaps moving forward we will see new developments implementing some of these<br />
strategies, maybe not to this extent in larger cities like Sydney, however more energy efficient<br />
strategies like solar systems, mixed-use development and more shared facilities will most likely<br />
increase.<br />

Fernando takes special care to look after properties under management<br />

management in New York City and Los Angeles, respectively. He’s currently<br />
pursuing a Master of Property Development and Investment at the<br />
University of Technology Sydney and holds a Bachelor of Finance from<br />

Alicia has completed her degree in Interior Architecture and is currently<br />
studying her Masters in Property and Development at UNSW whilst gaining<br />

environment industry and she takes on her experience as an Interior<br />
