of the President Elect. (See? It carries 

just as much weight when I say it as 

when Joe Biden says it, which is to say 

none, because there is no such thing 

as The Office of the President Elect.) I, for 

one, look forward to all this election nonsense 

stretching into January. (And remember; see a 

doctor if election last longer than four weeks.) 

Gig Update of the Week: Saturday, 

December 5 was originally scheduled as a night 

of music, inside and out, at Exit Zero Filling 

Station, featuring TNT (me and Tim Joyce), 

Nancy Malcun and Camille Peruto, with the 

four of us combining like Voltron for a final set 

of Christmas music as the supergroup group 

TNTNNNC (which looks an awful lot like 

TITANIC. Omen?). 

We’ve since decided that ALL the music 

outside and ALL of it performed in supergroup 

fashion. What does this mean to you, 

you might ask? Shut up and I’ll tell you, I might 

answer. It means that you’re going to get all of 

your favorite TNT, Nancy and Camille tunes, 

but with an extra added layer of TNT, Nancy 

and Camille. Put it this way; you like when 

Tim and I do “Lyin’ Eyes” by the Eagles? You’ll 

like it even more with Nancy and Camille adding 

creamy third and fourth harmonies to it. 

You like when Nancy and Camille play Ariana 

Grande and Billie Eilish? Well, you’ll enjoy it 

the exact same way because I’m a 50-year-old 

man and I can’t sing Ariana or Billie, but you 

get the idea. I’m incredibly excited to perform 

with these massively talented young ladies. 

Also, if you managed to go all season without 

seeing Nancy and Camille, December 5 will 

be the perfect time to remedy that. It’s going 

to rule. 

Weekly Beard & Weight Watch: The beard 

is far more exciting than the weight, which 

has hovered between 225.5-227.5 for about a 

month currently stands at (drum roll please) 

227! (Riveting, ain’t it?). However, each passing 

week in the 220s makes it that much more 

difficult to attain my stated goal weight of 199.5 

by December 31. Although, to be fair, 199.5 has 

been my goal weight since 1994. The beard is 

coming back in nicely, though. No trimming, 

no sculpting, I’m just letting that sumbitch 

grow for November in sympathy with whatever 

cause No Shave November is about. (Seriously, 

if anyone knows, shoot me a message and I’ll 

make a donation because I’m a good person. 

Well, maybe not good, but better than you.) 

In other hard-to-believe news, by the time 

you read this it will have been nearly three 

weeks since I last had a drink and, honestly, I’ve 

never felt worse.

I’ve been stanning Antojo’s 

owner Jehovanny Nunez in here 

quite a bit recently and was prepared 

to leave him alone this 

week, but he was repping an Exit 

Zero Filling Station cap this week 

and, well, since there is very little 

else going on in my life right now, I 

figured this would kill a paragraph. 

(Also, seriously, go to Antojo’s. 

It’s ridiculous. And for my readers 

over 25, “stanning” means 

fanboy-ing and is a reference to 

Eminem songs “Stan” which is a 

real heart-warmer.) 

I stood in my empty laundry 

room Sunday night, took a look 

around, dusted my hands off and 

said to myself, “Welp, the laundry’s 

done.” Then I laughed and 

laughed and laughed. What a 

hilariously abstract concept, the 

laundry being done, like time and 

math. 

Not only was I forced to retract 

a lame, unfinished joke about 

Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, 

I must now retract my opinion that 

it was just “okay”, because episode 

eight is one of the finest hours 

of television I’ve watched in quite 

some time. It pulled the previous 

seven episodes into sharper focus 

and lent real emotional gravitas to 

the final two. If you can grit your 

teeth through the Wokeisms and 

are extremely patient, it is very 

rewarding. 

What I Learned from YouTube 

This Week: George Harrison 

needed a B-side for his single 

“Got My Mind Set On You,” 

went to dinner with his friend Jeff 

Lynne, who brought his friend Roy 

Orbison. George asked Jeff to help 

him write it, Roy asked if he could 

hang out. George calls his friend 

Bob Dylan to rent his home studio, 

Bob says okay. Next morning, 

George goes to pick up his guitar 

from his Tom Petty’s house, Tom 

decides to tag along... 10 days, 10 

songs. Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. 

Revisit that first album, it’s pretty 

great. Two of them are even still 

alive (as of this writing). 

A-ha! of the Week: Recently, I 

pithily opined that the new Stevie 

Nicks song was indistinguishable 

from a new Miley Cyrus song. Oh, 

how clever my observation was, 

a timely treatise on the decline of 

their careers and the cookie-cutter 

nature of modern music (Google 

“Millennial Whoop”). Well, turns 

out it was a Stevie Nicks-Miley 

Cyrus and I’m just a dummy. 

I’ll be back at Planet Fitness 

this week (if my head stops 

pounding long enough for me 

to fully function as a human 

being… Am I whining? It sounds 

like I’m whining). In the meantime, 

keep your eye out for Steve 

Carrillo. He’s not actually Conan 

the Barbarian, he just looks like 

Conan the Barbarian. And is much 

nicer. No pillaging and plundering 

that I’m aware of. He’s actually my 

end goal. Uh, his appearance. Not 

him. I’m not, you know... but if I 

was… what was I saying? 

The Philadelphia 76ers will 

win the Eastern Conference in 

2021. If they acquire James Harden 

without giving up Ben Simmons or 

Joel Embiid, they will win the NBA 

championship. (I haven’t flexed 

my machismo sports knowledge 

in a while and, after that previous 

paragraph, felt like it was time.) 

AMC had a day of disaster 

movies (Deep Impact, 2012, Air Force 

One) I watched with Owen. He 

pointed out that they all had black 

or female presidents (Morgan 

Freeman, Danny Glover, Glenn 

Close) and I had to explain to him 

that, back in the old days, if there 

was a black or female president, 

it usually meant a meteor was 

hurtling towards Earth or something. 

Ah, the good old days. Not 

of white presidents, but of waiting 

for that sweet, sweet meteor…

Ever just want to turn off the news — 

or the world — or better yet, your 

thoughts? There is much to be hopeful 

for but still much work to be done. 

The events of the recent past have 

caused civil unrest, but what about personal 

upset? If television is mind candy, there’s an 

older series from the SyFy channel that is better 

than an all-day sucker! 

Stargate Atlantis ran for ive seasons. An 

advanced civilization from long ago is hidden 

deep under the ocean in the city of Atlantis. 

They are the keepers of a portal to other 

universes and galaxies. Go in the portal from 

their Atlantis base and come out thousands 

of light years away to ind allies, ight aliens 

and try to bring down a whole society of villains 

intent on sucking the life out of all living 

people. 

Five seasons. This show carried on for 

ive seasons. Wait, wait... No judgie, no judgie! 

It’s remarkable how this show went on. 

If you’re a Star Trek fan, like myself, you can’t 

mistake the Trekkieness. Yes, I just made up 

that word. The show features a doctor who 

complains, “I’m a doctor, not a wormhole 

expert!” Paraphrasing but that’s close to what 

he says in one episode. And to put a point on 

it, he has a very “Scotty” accent. 

The series is one that you can easily stumble 

upon — even though some of you may have 

been fans for years. The wormhole express 

started in 1994 with Stargate, starring Kurt 

Russell and James Spader. Critics weren’t 

in love — one citation called it “a portal to 

ho-hum” — but sci-i fans loved it. It even got 

quirky awards. 

A cult following started with a tv series 

called SG-1, which lasted a decade, the Atlantis 

spin off, and two other franchises. It all ended 

about 10 years ago, but thanks to the magic of

More than just the one doctor, the show’s 

sets are really Trekkian. Ok no more made 

up words…although look it up, that’s sort of 

oficially a word. The plots are relatively easy 

to follow and there’s a little romance brewing 

from time to time. Throw in a few tense 

situations, save-the-day moments, and (at 

times) cheesy dialogue, and you’ve got Stargate 

Atlantis. As cheesy as it gets, it’s never so bad 

that it becomes unwatchable (caveat: if sci-i’s 

your thing). 

All this to say with all the news and divisiveness, 

maybe hop a portal and ease that 

worried mind. Bargain shopper escapism for 

sure — but still works. Hopefully, you get back 

a little refreshed for the ongoing battle!

The Old Fogey 

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur 

Ihave a credit rating! I have resisted 

such mundane evil for decades, much 

in the way that I refuse to have a social 

security number or a government chip 

implanted in my head (oh you may scoff, 

but then THEY have made you scoff. The 

same THEY that use everyday devices such 

as those ATM machines to make you stare at 

the screen unblinking for a totally unreasonably 

long time, in order for subliminal patterns 

to hypnotize you and make you more 

malleable. Otherwise you would realize that 

you TOO have chips in your heads. Oh yes. 

But don’t get me started). 

Of course, a credit rating has never been 

necessary to one who purchases using salvaged 

pirate gold and wins properties on 

the turn of a card (most often Cribbage but 

sometimes Snap). And in fact here in Cape 

May we had our very own form of credit 

rating while the rest of America was a howling 

wilderness. It was based on what people 

thought of you from shaking your hand, looking 

you in the eye and seeing if you sweated. 

It was a rough kind of rating, for sure, but 

never proved us wrong. Mind you, a “credit 

refused” decision then meant a blow to the 

side of the head from whoever found you 

wanting, and could end up in your credit 

rating and yourself dropping six feet off the 

Concrete Ship into the cold waters. 

So what changed my mind? Well, it was 

my desire to receive the proffered Cape May 

Gourmands Club card that came in the mail. 

All one had to do was post it back and one 

would receive a shimmering black card one 

inch thick, which would grant the holder the 

right to dine for free for exactly 30 seconds at 

any of Cape May’s eateries. Now, I can down 

a prodigious and surprising amount of food 

in half a minute, I can tell you. But when I had 

my staff read the small print, it demanded an 

“excellent” credit score. 

I had my people investigate (Kitchener 

used one of those damnable laptop computing 

machines) and it seemed that I had credit 

as “slim” as my hips (which are thin: that is 

the joke). Well, that was not acceptable, so 

I instructed the team to ix it (“make it so” 

I am fond of saying, quoting that bald sex 

god Picard from the television). I know not 

what they did but a scarce few months later I 

have received my gleaming Gourmand card. 

Oddly, the basement seems to be overf lowing 

with brown boxes with the word “Amazon” 

on the side. One looks to be the same size and 

shape as a motorboat, and I swear several 

growled as I walked past.

What are your plans for 

Thanksgiving?” This was a simple 

question before the coronavirus 

pandemic. Normally, 

you might be negotiating times 

with exes or in-laws, joining a pot-luck 

Friendsgiving, volunteering, or hosting your 

own feast. This year, who knows what to 

do? The CDC is advising against gatherings, 

cautioning that dining with anyone outside 

your household is risky. Sounds reasonable, 

until you — or rather, until I — realize that the 

humans I carried in my body for nine months 

each don’t technically count as members of 

my household. Fine. We’ll be responsible, 

with a quick outdoor meal and take-home 

desserts, but the mother of the house will not 

be happy about it. Go, vaccine researchers. 

Finding holiday joy is especially challenging 

in 2020. Look for it all over Cape May by 

joining the “12 Days of Christmas: Cape May 

Walking Tour and Holiday Hunt,” sponsored 

by Curious Cape May Bike and Walking Tours. 

Search for 12 holiday symbols hidden around 

town, then post a picture of yourself with each 

symbol on Facebook or Instagram, with the 

hashtag #CapeMay12Days. You might even 

win a prize. Check the capemaystrong.com

Or ind your way over to the Emlen 

Physick Estate for a scavenger hunt. Use 

a map to explore the grounds of the estate 

and ind answers to questions about life in 

Victorian times. On your way, ind the site of 

the Holiday Tree Lighting on November 21. 

Registration of $3 is required to limit crowd 

size. There’s also a Cape May Family Treasure 

Hunt featuring questions about architecture. 

Pick up the packet, which includes an answer 

sheet, and ind your way through Cape May’s 

streets. The kids will enjoy this and it also 

works for toddlers with a stroller and patient 

teenagers. Pick up the maps at the Hill House 

ofice of the Carriage House Visitors Center. 

Hunts are free, but donations are accepted. 

If you’re new to Cape May, ind your way 

to a “Welcome to Cape May” trolley tour for 

a taste of what the town has to offer. The 

trolleys are comfortable, the guides are entertaining 

and you can get an idea of the town’s 

layout. Or, consider an evening “Holiday 

Lights” tour, including Christmas music and 

the “twinkle of Cape May’s beautiful Victorian 

homes decorated for Christmas.” Tickets are 

$15 for adults, $10 for children (ages 3-12), 

with 20 percent off for military. Tours begin 

and end at the trolley stop on Ocean Street.

This was not the column I intended to 

write. Indeed, it is one I hoped fate 

would spare me. The Fates are not 

so kind. My intention was to write 

a column exhorting the days of late 

autumn, when the burnished leaves of oaks 

cling to the branches and echelons of waterfowl 

cleave their paths in the sky. But after 

an exhilarating jaunt around the Port Norris 

impoundments, I received a call from my old 

colleague Sheila Lego. “Tom Gilmore died,” 

was all she could enunciate before her composure 

dissolved. 

Tom Gilmore, New Jersey Audubon 

President from 1983 to 2012 was a living force 

of nature — a mission driven, dynamic, coalition 

builder whose legacy merely includes 

the Freshwater Wetlands Act. If you can go to 

your tap and draw fresh, pure drinking water, 

you have Tom to thank but he would graciously 

invite you to thank the other members 

of the coalition and the staff who idolized him. 

I remember his first trip to Cape May Bird 

Observatory. A dark-haired man in the prime

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

of his life who had just assumed the helm of 

New Jersey’s oldest and largest conservation 

organization. He would inject enough energy 

and enthusiasm to make it a force of nature, 

defending New Jersey’s natural heritage for 

all its residents. Tom was a natural leader, 

one who trusted the people he worked with 

and we, in turn, knew Tom had our backs. His 

standing order was, “If you screw up, I want to 

be the first to hear about it, not last.” 

One of his first challenges was reigning 

in the enthusiasm of one of the organizations 

youngest directors — me. I pitched my 

idea to host an international birding competition 

with the playing field wholly in New 

Jersey. Tom gave his grudging support provided 

I gain the support of the American 

Birding Association, the magazine American 

Birds, and get the endorsement of Roger Tory 

Peterson, bird watching’s Grand Master. A 

week later, I called Tom. “Check ABA, check 

American Birds.” “And Roger?” Tom pressed. 

“Oh, Roger’s a Guerrilla,” I announced 

with relish. “Roger’s on our team,” I explained. 

“The Guerrilla Birding team of Pete Bacinski, 

Bill Boyle, David Sibley and me.” So. on May 

29, 1984, with Tom’s blessing, our team set 

out to do what no group of birders had done 

before — record 200 bird species in 24 hours 

all in New Jersey. 

Thank you, Tom, for this and all you did 

for New Jersey’s image and its environment. 

Fare thee well, Tom. Winter came early this 

year.

afraid to even bring up the subject. Am I being
