Dear Members,<br />
On behalf of the Board of Governors, Arizona Chapter, National Academy of Television Arts &<br />
Sciences, I would like to welcome all of you to the 23rd Annual Rocky Mountain <strong>Emmy</strong> Awards. Along<br />
with honoring tonight's Nominees and <strong>Emmy</strong> Recipients, we also are celebrating 50 years of television<br />
broadcasting in our region.<br />
Your Board of Governors hopes that tonight's event will be a pleasurable and memorable evening<br />
and we have worked quite hard to make sure that it is.<br />
I would like to welcome our special guest and host for tonight's program, Jodi Applegate. Jodi is<br />
not only a unique and wonderfully talented individual, bu also a very good friend. Please join me in<br />
welcoming Jodi.<br />
The people and organizations that helped bring this evening about have been credited elsewhere in<br />
this program, but I want to personally thank a few. Our Chapter Administrator, Patricia Emmert, has done a<br />
great job helping organize tonight's event. The Chapter Trustee, Jan Jacobson, as always, has been a<br />
tremendous help. Our Chapter faces one of those good news/bad news situations with the election of Drew<br />
Sidener as our new Chapter President, but we also lose him as l" Vice-President. Drew has been in charge<br />
of organizing our Call for Entries the last two years and has done a wonderful job! Tonight's <strong>Emmy</strong><br />
<strong>Program</strong> was produced by a very talented group of people including Brad Anderson, Mary Marini-Para,<br />
Juliet Falevitch, and headed by our 2"d Vice-President, Robert Nifio. There were so many people who<br />
jumped in and helped organize tonight's event, I'm afraid to name any more in case I miss some, but you all<br />
know who you are and I thank you.<br />
Tonight's <strong>Emmy</strong> Event is the last offrcial function for me as President. I would like to thank all of<br />
the past and present Board Members who have served with me and helped me through these last two years.<br />
Please give Drew and the rest of the Board all the help and support you have given me over the last two<br />
years and this organization will become stronger and better for all of us.<br />

JODI APPLEGATE<br />
Host r"Later Today"<br />
Jodi Applegate was named host of "Later Today" in January, 1999. She previously served as co-anchor of<br />
"Weekend Today," a position she held since joining NBC News in1996. During that time, Applegate was also a<br />
daytime anchor at MSNBC, the 24-hour news and information cable network from NBC and Microsoft.<br />
"Weekend Today," the highly successful weekend edition of weekday morning news leader "Today," provided the<br />
ideal setting for Applegate to showcase her versatile skills as an anchor, reporter and interviewer. Highlights of her<br />
tenure with the program included live coverage of Princess Diana's funeral from London in 1997, continuing<br />
coverage of the 1996 presidential campaign, and the first interview with NATO Supreme Commander General<br />
Wesley Clark after the conclusion ofthe war in Kosovo.<br />
Prior to joining NBC News, Applegate had been the anchor of KTVK-TV's "Good Morning Aizorra," the toprated<br />
morning-news program in Phoenix, since February 1993. From l992to 1993, she was a weekend anchor and<br />
general-assignment reporter for KTMtt in Reno, where she also produced and wrote the 6:30 p.m. and 1l p.m.<br />
weekendbroadcasts.<br />
Earlier in 1992, Applegate was a field correspondent for the NBC series "Dr. Dean," reporting daily on lifestyle and<br />
health issues. In I 99 I , she was an on-camera traffic reporter in San Francisco for NBC affrliate KRON-TV.<br />
From 1989 to 1991, Applegate was the host and producer of C-SPAN's current-events program "Close-Up<br />
America," for which she also oversaw topic selection, guest booking and field production. She began her career in<br />
1987 as a producer of "The Morning Show with Ed Walker and Bruce Alan" on WWRC-AM radio in Washington,<br />
D.C.<br />

Doug Bennett worked as the Art Director in the Creative Services<br />
department at KTVK-TV in Phoenix, Arizona for 3 years. Prior to<br />
that , he spent several years as Art Director at KPNX and KSAZ, also<br />
in Phoenix. Doug is originally from Seattle where he began his<br />
broadcasting career.<br />
Whether working out or riding his favorite motorcycle, Doug put<br />
LL0% into everything he did. He was always a positive force<br />
providing encouragement and energy tro everyone he worked with.<br />
Plus, if there was food around, watch out! Eatin g a Lenny's burger<br />
will neverbe the same.<br />
On December 6th, L999, at the age of 49, Doug's talent and<br />
enthusiam were taken from our lives as he was tragically killed in a<br />
motorcycle accident. Doug left behind a broth e\ a sister-in-law and<br />
many more friends and co-workers whose lives were touched<br />
forever by this caring person. We miss him terribly.<br />

after years of creating art in Phoenix, Arizona, Doug is nominated for his first <strong>Emmy</strong> Award. He would<br />
have been so excited to be here.<br />
Patti Jay, Manager of Creative Services at KAE! died Aprit 8 after a brief illness. She was a key member of the<br />
Channel 8 management team since 1990, overseeing the station's advertising and promotional aciivities, member<br />
magazine, on-air promotions and special events. The funeral was held in benver and a memorial was held in<br />
Tempe.<br />
