DANCE AT MARYMOUNT
MANHATTAN COLLEGE
The Marymount Manhattan College Department of
Dance is committed to the belief that learning through
the body is a means for the acquisition, translation, and
creation of historical, socio-political and theoretical
knowledge. We are committed to implementing a
racially inclusive curriculum, to better develop culturally
relevant teaching environments, and remaining
accountable to our students in order to become an
example for inclusivity in Dance Education.
The department prides itself on providing the best
of both worlds—a strong dance program, rigorous
curriculum, and excellent faculty combined with a
well-rounded education that comes from being part of
a liberal arts college. It is the department’s philosophy
that this combination offers the best preparation for
the dancer to perform on and off stage. We believe
that becoming a dancer is not just a matter of learning
dance techniques or interrelated subjects but requires
the kind of personal growth that a liberal arts education
provides. Offering both a BFA and BA in Dance, we
strongly encourage study in interrelated disciplines of
Dance rich with creativity and opportunity.
Our movement classes offer a rigorous approach to
the physical and verbal command of dance vocabulary.
Students are encouraged to develop aesthetic
awareness that illuminates multicultural, intersectional,
and artistic innovations, and also examines stylistic
traditions and historical and cultural perspectives
within a global context. Students are able to pursue a
minor or a double major in other areas of the College’s
curriculum, providing them with additional skills to use
after graduating and expanding their opportunities
for personal growth and to prepare them to become
citizens of the world and true advocates for the arts.
Our interest is in the dancer as a whole person, an
artist who balances a trained body with an active,
capable mind. Following the core belief of the college,
we encourage our students to be socially engaged
individuals who participate in the improvement of
society. Students are exposed to a vast array of career
opportunities and are assisted with resumes, photos,
and cover letters, to equip them for interviews in various
dance related professions and/or auditions. We strive
to instill discipline, self-esteem, artistry, creativity,
critical thinking, and collaborative skills, components
that students need to realize their fullest potential in
any profession, but most especially in dance.
NEW YORK CITY IS OUR CAMPUS
The Marymount Manhattan College Department of Dance students take advantage of all that New York City
has to offer, including its unparalleled cultural resources. Our dancers have performed at The Joyce Theater,
92 nd Street Y’s “Fridays at Noon,” Everett Performing Arts Center, The Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture,
Parsons Dance Gala, and at public high schools in the New York City Area. Dance majors often have access to
free tickets to live dance performances around the city. Course work may require students to attend multiple
performances throughout a semester. Additionally, the Upper East Side is home to Museum Mile, with the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Frick, and the Guggenheim all within walking distance of our campus. By
their last spring semester, our seniors begin to explore options for working, auditioning, and interviewing in the
New York City area in their particular interest/s or concentrations.
BACHELOR
OF FINE ARTS
(BFA)
The Bachelor of Fine Arts is a professional
program in dance designed for the student who
plans to pursue a career in dance performance
and/or choreography. The BFA Dance program
emphasizes nurturing the student, cultivating, and
strengthening each student’s technical skills and
artistry. Students study ballet, modern, jazz and
non-western forms, along with a foundation in
improvisation. Courses in music, choreography,
anatomy, production, and dance and cultural
histories round out the dance curriculum. Each
semester, students continue to hone their
performance skills while rehearsing and studying
all aspects of dance production.
“I transferred to MMC and
it was the best decision
I made for my personal
trajectory as a dancer. The
level of professionalism
throughout the program,
the high quality of training
in a myriad of techniques,
and the multitude of
performance opportunities
provide an incredible
canvas for developing a
dancing artist.”
— Jere Hunt
Ballet
Classical ballet training is the primary focus of this
concentration, with emphasis placed on proper use of
turnout, alignment, and development of strength. All levels
of ballet emphasize reflective practices and progressive
approaches to the understanding of the technique in its
technical rigor, form and qualitative aspects of movement.
Combined with movement analysis, students move beyond
learning by imitation and attain a deeper embodied
experience. The curriculum integrates the principals of
multiple pedagogical foundations and theories of Ballet
and ensures that the teaching is culturally responsive to
the needs of a diverse group of students. Traditional and
hierarchical underpinnings are interrogated to serve
today’s contemporary student. Pointe and Masculinity
in Ballet serve all genders of students and are part of
the course requirements for the ballet concentration.
Quality of movement as a platform for artistic expression is
emphasized in the advanced levels, while special attention
is paid to maintaining the integrity of the technique
throughout the curriculum.
Choreography
Students in the Choreography concentration study the art
and craft of choreography through theory and practice.
Employing various methodologies, techniques, sources,
styles, and points of view, they gain valuable experience
in composing dances in both solo and group forms with
mentorship support. In addition, students acquire an
understanding of production values and technical support
and how these impact the conception, development, and
execution of an artistic idea and its realization in either
theatrical, video/film creation, and/or site specific ways
of performing/presenting dance. Honing their craft in a
diverse array of process-oriented rehearsal environments,
participating either as performers or choreographers,
students completing the work in this concentration are
prepared to develop and pursue their own individual
aesthetic interest, objectives and artistic philosophies.
Jazz
Regardless of concentration, all students are required to
take Embodied Africanist Aesthetics, as these influences
are a part of many contemporary concert and commercial
dance forms today. This concentration is structured
with theories and practices that widen the scope and
understanding of its histories, imperative knowledge
that allows dancers to fully embrace the art form. The
required tap courses address both specific rhythm
(jazz), classical forms from vaudeville to Broadway, and
contemporary styles. The dynamic synthesis of the courses
in this concentration help to develop a personal voice in
Jazz dance and prepares dancers for the profession. To
maximize potential opportunities in the field, candidates
within the concentration are encouraged to audition for
musical theater productions during the summer months.
Modern
The BFA concentration in Modern Dance offers a dynamic
program of study in many of the movement principles and
skills particular to this dance form. Course offerings in the
techniques of modern dance pioneers Martha Graham,
Lester Horton, José Limón, Alwin Nikolais, May O’Donnell,
Merce Cunningham, and Paul Taylor, as well as classes in
non-western dance forms, such as Butoh/Baharatanatyan,
among others. The modern curriculum encompasses a
wide range of embodied practices to create today’s most
versatile dancer. In addition, courses in improvisation
designed to encourage an in-depth exploration of
movement ultimately provide valuable skills necessary for
individual freedom of expression in both the performance
and invention of dance.
“I will never regret my decision
to attend Marymount Manhattan
College for dance. The same faculty
that pushed and inspired me every
day are now some of the most
important people in my life.”
BACHELOR
OF ARTS
(BA)
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in
Dance offers interdisciplinary
pursuits of dance studies in
dialogue with or congruent
to concert dance. The dance
department emphasizes the
importance of dance education
as applied to pedagogical
systems, theorizations of
performance practices, an
analysis of movement and
its implications in a variety
of arenas, and the emerging
relationships between dance
and media. BA candidates
are given a solid foundation
in dance technique and a
balanced approach to course
work to facilitate the four
concentrations: Body, Science,
and Motion; Dance and Media;
Dance Studies; and Teaching
Dance Arts. The curriculum
is comprehensive, rigorous,
forward thinking, while also
pragmatic in its approach to
future studies and careers
in dance-related fields. It is
non-performance-based and
has the flexibility to meet the
needs of dance students, dance
professionals seeking a degree,
and those interested in pursuing
a minor or double major in a
related field.
Body, Science,
and Motion
The BS&M concentration
creates an opportunity to
combine dance with a scientific
foundation, providing a path
for those who wish to pursue
postgraduate programs in
allied health, somatic work, or
general research. Dance majors
prepare for roles as practitioners,
physical therapists, movement
specialists, consultants, clinical
educators, and scholars.
Depending on career goals,
the concentration can stand
alone or be further enhanced
with the MMC Biology minor,
or a MMC Psychology minor.
Students interested in Cultural
Somatics are encouraged
to pursue a MMC minor in
Politics and Human Rights.
Our goal is to support the
need to meet the challenges
of the rapidly changing and
burgeoning field of dance
medicine. Internships with
noted practitioners and medical
institutions in Manhattan provide
our candidates with cuttingedge
experience and introduce
opportunities in the field.
Dance and Media
The Dance and Media
concentration provides
theoretical and practical
experience for students who
wish to record, document,
present, and/or manipulate
images related to the body,
dance, and movement. Dance
and Media students work in
artistic, scholarly, archival, and
arts administration/marketing
contexts. The concentration
addresses the conception and
production of audio and visual
media for use in live, recorded,
and web-based applications,
exploring current and developing
technologies for producing
and distributing dance in
the digital age. A variety of
sub-concentrations permit
the exploration of specialized
interests in the dance and media
fields.
The concentration addresses the
conception and production of
audio and visual media for use
in live, recorded, and web-based
applications, exploring current
and developing technologies
for producing and distributing
dance in the digital age.
Dance Studies
The Dance Studies concentration
equips students with a broad
perspective of dance that
addresses social, historical,
cultural, economic, political,
and artistic dance practices,
principles and theories through a
global lens. It fosters a thorough
understanding of selected
theoretical debates and issues
that are pertinent to the study
of dance to provide students
with creative, compositional,
and performance strategies for
the production, analysis, and
documentation of dance. The
curriculum allows not only for
an understanding of dance as a
social structure, but how dance
and culture develop out of shared
aesthetics as well as political
principles. Students learn to
select and manage relevant
source materials from which
they can analyze, interpret, and
synthesize research findings.
Students are also able to critique,
construct, and embody ideas
through oral, literary, electronic,
and performance modes.
Teaching Dance Arts
The Teaching Dance Arts
concentration provides
theoretical knowledge and
practical experience for BA
dance majors who wish to pursue
a career in teaching dance
to those who seek movement
exploration as a means toward
self-expression, self-discovery,
and self-knowledge. It addresses
the fundamental and practical
knowledge of various dance
techniques, principles of
music, anatomy, curriculum
development, and pedagogy.
Discussions of alternative
pedagogical methodologies
are encouraged and explored.
Students learn to incorporate
the National Dance Education
Standards for teaching dance
arts in diverse and inclusive
environments from children
through professionals. A
broadened perspective ensures
recognition of the role that
dance education can play in
the enrichment of lifelong
learning skills and allows for an
emphasis on special populations,
community outreach, arts
advocacy through education,
interdisciplinary practices,
and teaching as creating,
performance, and vocabulary.
This track is housed within the
BA Dance major and does not
constitute a minor in education
leading to New York State
certification in dance.
“Marymount’s safe environment
allowed me to create, grow, and educate
myself as a young artist. The Dance
Department gave me the opportunity to
expand my knowledge of the arts both
physically and mentally, and I would not be
the dancer I am today without the faculty’s
guidance. After graduating, I had the privilege
of performing in the 2019 Radio City
Christmas Spectacular as a Rockette.”
Audition Dates
Auditions are held from January - March.
We offer In –Person, Live Virtual, and
Digital auditions. For a complete up-to-date list and
application process, visit:
www.mmm.edu/departments/dance/auditions
Audition Process
All applicants, whether they are pursuing a BA or a BFA
degree in Dance, must audition for acceptance and
proper placement in the Dance program. Information is
available upon request from the dance department. We
do not offer private auditions. All audition candidates
participate in an abbreviated ballet class and a jazz,
modern/improvisation component. All dancers are
required to submit a 1 - 2-minute solo, in their preferred
style (no tap); the choreography need not be by the
applicant. Tap is assessed once a student is accepted to
the program during the first year/transfer orientation.
Following the movement portion of the on-campus or
live virtual auditions, dancers who are selected, will
be interviewed by members of the dance faculty. It is
encouraged to participate at one of the on-campus
or live virtual auditions. Additionally, a rhythmic skills
evaluation is given for placement purposes only. We
invite you to visit the campus! When you do so, let us
know in advance so we can welcome you!
All applicants must submit:
• Application for admission to the College
• Dance audition application to the Dance
Department, including a selected date for audition
“I am grateful for the
time I had at MMC. I
knew I wanted to dance
but never knew exactly
where I wanted that
path to take me. MMC
prepared me for my
next chapter of life
right out of college and
provided me
with an education to set
both mind and body
on that path. Postgraduation
I was hired
by the Martha Graham
Dance Company and
continue to live out the
dream I had through
college.”
— Alyssa Cebulski
“I recommend this
program to any dancer
seeking intensive,
practical dance training
accompanied with
equally thorough
academic studies. The
interconnectedness of
mind and body, which
is ingrained in the
MMC dance curriculum,
made me not only a
proficient dancer but a
cognizant artist in the
field. I can confidently
say that the MMC Dance
Department prepared
me for a career as a
professional dancer and
equipped me with the
tools necessary to excel
in this industry.”
— Andrew Mikhaiel
Students must submit the application for admission
prior to scheduling an audition. Once the application is
submitted, students will be prompted to complete the
dance application and schedule an audition date on
their admissions portal. The applicant’s audition date
will be confirmed by the dance department via email
once previous steps are completed.
