Hello and welcome to our preview edition of Hepburn. This year has

been challenging for all and in the typical Australian fighting spirit,

I decided to launch a magazine for women to celebrate amazing women

who have achieved in their business, professional or public life and to

inspire women who are starting their journey or moving on a new path.

Hepburn is a new approach to a women’s magazine. We know women

love magazines and a good flip book is great. But in this digital age we

wanted to provide our readers with a choice on how they subscribe to

our magazine content. We also wanted to address accessibility.

So I embarked on a journey to deliver a multimedia magazine for our

readers. The Hepburn woman can enjoy our articles as she pleases,

whether that be reading our digital issue, sitting back and holding our

print issue, watching our YouTube channel or listening to selected articles

via podcast.

This month Hepburn launched our In Conversation with Amazing

Australian Women a monthly serial of interviews with a premiere interview

on YouTube. Our Amazing women series is a conversation with women

who have achieved success in business, professional or public life and

are happy to share their story and knowledge with others. You will find us

on the Hepburn Magazine Channel. Look for our distinctive logo.

Hepburn also launched In Conversation with Aspiring Australian Women.

It is a monthly series of interviews with women who are ready to promote

their business and discuss their aspirations and how they may reach

their goal. We premiered the In Conversation with Aspiring Women on

Hepburn’s YouTube channel.

Our Hepburn readers will also be able to find our In Conversation series

and a few other articles on our podcast.

Our bi-monthly issues will delight readers with scintillating articles falling

within the ambits of Amour Propre, Appetence, Abundance, Ambition,

Passion, Nouvelle Cuisine, and Leisure.

In this preview edition we discuss living in the new normal, leading in

challenging times, putting the spring back in your steps, how to boost

your super and tempt you in our Nouvelle Cuisine section with a mocktail,

cocktail and canapes.

Like any journey, starting Hepburn was not a solo expedition. It was

achieved only through the efforts of an amazing team. I personally want

to thank each member for their contribution and for faithfully following

me on the digital voyage of discovery. Thank you Sushmita Sharma,

Kristina Mazalova, Siobhan Vale and Thomas Hall. We’ll be popping the

champagne to celebrate.

Gone But Not Forgotten

By Jacqueline Hodges

For years, I have been an admirer of the two great Hepburns: Audrey and Katherine. I

sat and watched the movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood, in which these women

starred, and subsequently I watched the documentaries about their respective lives.

Both women presented to me as female role models with albeit differing attitudes:

each being well-educated, possessed the strength of being true to oneself. And it is

perhaps the influence of these two women that led me to call the magazine Hepburn.

But it is Audrey Hepburn who I wish to speak about today.

1| Hepburn

Most of our readers, viewers and listeners will

quickly recognise the name Audrey Hepburn and

many will recall the movies in which she starred.

Who can forget Audrey Hepburn’s performance

as the elegantly, dressed Holly Golightly stepping

out of the taxi to look at Tiffany’s store windows

or cheekily pocketing party masks from the 5 and

10 store in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, or listening to the

linguistically challenged Eliza Doolittle’s elocution

lessons from phonetics Professor Henry Higgins and

her relapse to Cockney twang as she shouts “Move

your bloomin’ arse” at the Ascot Racecourse in My

Fair Lady.

Audrey was the third-greatest female screen legend

in Golden Age of Hollywood. Not at all incidentally,

Katherine Hepburn is noted as the greatest. But

back to Audrey. For her performance in Roman

Holiday, she became the first actress to win an

Oscar, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Award

for a single performance.

Yet it is not for her acting career or her accolades as

a style icon that I wish to pay homage, but rather it

is for her most dignified role as UNICEF’s Goodwill

Ambassador. For it is in this role that she truly

demonstrated her leadership in challenging times.

“ Nothing is impossible.

The word itself says:

I’m possible.

Hepburn first worked for UNICEF shortly after

World War II, reading children’s stories of war on

the radio. However, it is years later, in 1998, that she

truly immersed herself into humanitarian efforts;

when she went on her first UNICEF field visit to

Ethiopia, where years of drought and civil strife

had caused terrible famine. Hepburn is quoted as

saying at that time:

“I have a broken heart. I feel desperate. I can’t stand

the idea that two million people are in imminent

danger of starving to death, many of them children,

[and] not because there isn’t tons of food sitting

in the port.”

The following year, in 1989, Hepburn was named

a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and travelled the

world meeting some of the world’s most vulnerable

children and raising awareness for UNICEF’s

programs.

She travelled to many nations, from Turkey to

Bangladesh, through South America and Central

America, from Thailand to Vietnam and various

African nations. She promoted numerous projects

that brought support to people living in poverty,

drought and famine and to those living on the

streets or displaced by war.

She promoted UNICEF’s projects to improve living

standards for those affected, bringing polio vaccines,

women’s training programmes, clean drinking

water, schools, literacy, nutrition and housing.

But Hepburn’s personal history with UNICEF began

much earlier in 1946, when UNICEF representatives

rescued her from the terrible post-war famine in the

Netherlands.

“I can testify to what UNICEF means to children,

because I was among those who received food and

medical relief right after World War II…I have a longlasting

gratitude and trust for what UNICEF does.”

It is this history that drove Hepburn to help others.

UNICEF reports that Hepburn worked tirelessly,

giving as many as 15 interviews a day to the media

in the United States, Canada and Europe. She also

hosted awards, benefits and gave speeches to

promote UNICEF’s work.

In 1992, she became the recipient of the Presidential

Medal of Freedom. This is the United States’ highest

civilian award. She continued her work for UNICEF

until her death in early 1993.

It is in her own selflessness, and hard work that

Audrey Hepburn fulfilled her true purpose and

demonstrated her leadership in challenging times.

And I want to leave you with this final Audrey quote:

“The beauty of a woman is not in

a facial mole, but true beauty in a

woman is reflected in her soul. It is

the caring that she lovingly gives,

the passion that she knows.”

Maintaining Your Style

In Challenging Times

By Kristina Mazalova

2020 has been a dreadful challenge for all the

fashion-loving businesswomen as the majority of

luxury boutiques started to shut down during the

COVID-19 lockdown. Even when we emerge out of

this pandemic, the fashion industry is expected to

continue facing a recession and a dramatic fall in its

revenue. During this pandemic, the sales of clothing

fell sharply. But interestingly, the sales for pajamas

and tracksuits reached the sky, as people became

homebound.

While the pandemic was certainly a nightmare for

the stores, it is a rising opportunity for women to

be more creative in redefining their style. Women

are becoming more comfortable and authentic

in embracing the fashion style of their choice.

However, some fashion experts are confident that

women will be ‘dressing up’ again as they step out

of their homes after spending months in their pj’s.

As Australia emerges out of the pandemic, women

are ready to style their wardrobe again. Here are some

styles that you must have in your wardrobe this spring.

Suits

Suits are a hot trend for 2020 Spring fashion.

Whether your style is a three-piece suit, or tailored

separates, suits are perfect for every occasion. To

enjoy a spring feel, try pastel colours and floral

patterns. For an elegant look, match your suit with

comfortable pumps. The height of the heel will

depend on your level of comfort and standing time.

That being said, pumps are very versatile as they

can be worn with any style of suit.

Heeled Loafers

If pumps are not for you, heeled loafers are the

second best alternative to wear with suits. Loved for

their comfort, heeled loafers give a sophisticated

and modern touch to your look. They are best worn

with a straight-leg pantsuit.

Puff Sleeves

Puff sleeves are back as a hot trend of 2020. Made

for all body types, they are ideal to wear in corporate

parties. Whether worn as a dress or as a blouse,

they make a modern and bold statement to your

style. For a refreshing look, try a basic colour puffsleeved

top with high-waist bold coloured pants.

“It is time that

everyone begins

exploring their

style again.”

7 | Hepburn

01. Desire

Firstly, figure out what you really want. As your career grew, you will have

also grown. What you seek in a partner may now differ from what you

wanted in your 20s and 30s. Take some time to examine your desires

and set your expectations. Once you are confident in your priorities and

expectations, you are more likely to find a better suited partner.

02. Explore

Online dating is great but don’t let it ruin the old school romance. Let

online dating apps find a right match for you, but also be open to blind

dates, finding people in bars, networking events, business conferences.

Don’t be afraid of trying new things.

03. Meet

Dating Delight

after 40 and beyond

9 | Hepburn

Dating in the 40s and beyond is often treated

as a taboo in the media. The truth is, dating is

even more fun when you are wiser and aware

of what you want in a partner. Whether you

are re-entering the dating world after a recent

divorce, or whether you are finally ready to

date after successfully establishing your career,

dating couldn’t be more alluring in any other

time than now.

In the digital world that we live in, we are

surrounded by dating apps that can help us

find new people. However, going “old school”

has its own fun too. After months of being

restricted by the social distancing guidelines,

now that we are finally free to go out and

meet new people, we should not waste time

using only one way to find the right partner.

Use online dating apps whenever you can but

also don’t miss out on the happy hours in bars.

Here’s our DEMO 4 hot tips for dating in the

40s and beyond.

At this stage, you stop using digital apps. While they are quite useful in

determining whether you like a person or not, they should not be overused

for chatting. Have a quick video call with the person to understand their

vibe and decide on a good place to meet. Meeting in person as early as

possible is very important because then you can either move forward or

move on to find a better match. Be prepared for when you meet. Have a

repertoire of things to discuss. No one wants to discuss your work life. Be

personal in your conversations. Talk about your hobbies, your dreams,

and things or people that really matter to you. Get to know what matters

to the other person and what they expect from dating.

04. Optimise

Dating is even more

fun when you are wiser

and aware of what you

want in a partner.

One conversation is never enough to decide whether you really like the

person or not. But it is a good start for you to understand if you would

like to meet them again. Trust your instincts. Be honest with yourself and

with the other person in deciding how the date went. If you did not enjoy

your date, politely let them know that you are not interested. If you liked

the person, express your interest in seeing them again.

Regardless of the choice you make, remember that there are millions of

people in the world who would be lucky to be with you!

If the bar scene isn’t for you, try different places, like art galleries, libraries

and museums. If you prefer something more active try a sports club or an

adventure holiday. If you wish to radiate your charms in style, try a luxury

resort or go on a romantic cruise.

8 Strategies to Boost Your Super

By Jacqueline Hodges

Abundance

1. The state or condition of having a copious quantity

of something; plentifulness

2. Plentifulness of the good things of life; prosperity

Statistically, women fall way behind men when it

comes to their superannuation balances. Currently,

the Association of Superannuation Funds Australia,

recommends a target retirement balance for a single

person, $545,000 and for a couple, $640,000.

Women on average retire with $115,000 less in

superannuation than men, and one in three women

retire with no super at all. Is it simply women are

not as financially savvy as men?

Well, not at all. The underlying reason for our

financial retirement deficit is much more human

than that. Very simply, women are more likely to

have a broken career pattern. We are the child

bearers and nurturers, or the carers of other family

members. While, not the only reason, it is this

broken career pattern that has the major impact

on our employment earnings and superannuation

balance.

Our wages are lower, we leave our paid employment

to start, grow and care for our families. We begin a

career hiatus as we embark on the part-time juggle

or we forsake our employment for freelancing in

the gig economy as we choose to remain at home

with our children and forsake the career labyrinth.

But we can choose to improve our superannuation

balances. In this article, I’ll discuss eight strategies to

boost your super.

Earlier, this year our superannuation balances were

hit hard. Lockdown, brought lower valuations and

a drop in superannuation balances of up to 12.5%

according to Super Ratings. Yet, recovery continued

and by the September quarter, superannuation

funds posted their fifth consecutive month of

gains. It is true that superannuation is a long term

investment and Australian Super suggests we

should expect a loss year at least in every 20 years.

But superannuation is a large industry sector with

$2.9 trillion under investment.

Early Access to Super

While accessing your super early is not

going to help grow your retirement

balance, we have included it here as

a reminder that you now have until

31 December 2020 to access $10,000

under the temporary early access to

superannuation.

Government, in response to the

COVID-19 pandemic, allowed

the temporary Early Access to

Superannuation this year. This measure

allowed those eligible to access up to

$20,000 of their superannuation. The

early release was limited to $10,000 up to

30 June 2020. If eligible, you may access a

further $10,000 up to 31 December 2020.

If you took advantage of the temporary

early access, you should make sure that

you did not exceed the $10,000 maximum

for each financial year and that you met

the eligibility criteria. The ATO does

intend to audit the drawdowns for illegal

early access.

The following paragraphs summaries the

8 strategies to boost your super.

Stapling of accounts

Freelance contractors, those in the gig

economy and job changers frequently

have a new superannuation fund account

created with each new employment

contract.

Holding more than one superannuation

account may negatively impact your

retirement balance. One factor impacting

limiting growth, is the fees are charged on

each and every superannuation account

you hold. Inefficiencies may also impact

your investment options. With available

funds spread across several funds, you

may miss investment opportunities.

Legislation has now passed to staple

superannuation accounts to an individual.

So, as you move between employers, your

superannuation fund will travel with you.

This prevents newly created and unintended

multiple superannuation accounts when you

change employers.

Until the procedures and software are refined,

you should have your superannuation fund

details ready, if you are commencing with a

new employer. You can find you fund details

and balance on your mygov account.

Choosing the right fund

YourSuper, an interactive comparison

tool that will rank MySuper funds will be

available from 01 July 2021. You will be able

to compare your fund’s fees and performance

with other MySuper funds.

Superannuation funds will also be required

to meet an annual objective performance

test. Funds that fail two consecutive

annual underperformance tests will not be

permitted to accept new members until their

performance improves.

Contribute for longer

Employer and member contributions are received into your

superannuation fund during the accumulation phase. Upon

retirement you generally convert that balance into pension

phase. However, and while a little more complex, you can hold

both an accumulation account and a pension account in super.

This flexibility, allows you to drawdown your pension from

one account but also to contribute to an accumulation fund for

growth. If over 66, you will need to consider the work test.

As you pass retirement age, a work test comes into play

stipulating the conditions in which a fund may accept member

contributions. The work test: you must work at least 40 hours

during a consecutive 30 day period each income year in order

for your fund to accept a personal super contribution for which

you can claim a deduction.

While a work test applies for those over 66 years of age, you can

continue to make contributions to your superannuation up to

the age of 66 without needing to meet the work test.

SMSF Memberships

Often referred to as a Family Fund or a DIY Super

Fund, Self-Managed Superannuation Funds

are funds that are managed and controlled by

individuals with the help of an accountant and

a financial adviser.

Previously, these funds were limited to four

members, which presents problems for families

with more than two children. SMSFs can now

offer membership to up to six members. By

combining more of the family funds under

the one roof, you may be able to pool funds

to invest together or invest separately. The

choice is yours. Fees may also be lower if using

only one SMSF.

14 | Hepburn

Bring Forward Rules

Non-concessional contributions are made into your

super fund from after-tax income. These contributions

are not taxed in your super fund. A non-concessional

contributions cap limits the annual amount that can

be contributed to $100,000.

Special bring forward rules apply, so that an amount of

$300,000 can be contributed across each rolling threeyear

period. Worth considering if you have a larger

investment such as real property in mind.

Spouse contributions age limit increase

The age limit for making spouse contributions has

increased from 69 to 74. This means that people aged

under 74 can receive contributions made by another

person on their behalf.

Seek financial Advice

You should always seek professional financial advice

before changing or starting a superannuation fund. A

financial adviser will also be able to help you with the

fund’s investment strategy and boost your super.

Finally, ASIC has a useful tool to show how your

superannuation balance will grow simply by

increasing your contributions. We’ve included the

link for you: https://moneysmart.gov.au/how-superworks/superannuation-calculator

Leadership in challenging times

Leadership Styles

There are so many leadership styles, it is hard to keep up with the theory flavour of the day. If

you research leadership styles typically there will be theoretical discussion on some common

styles, including strategic, transformational, autocratic, democratic, coaching, laissez-faire,

Charles Plant devised this simple grid.

Use this grid to know when and how

to adapt your leadership style.

Yet one must not mistake a style as a unique mould that leaders can be taught and model to fit

You Deserve a Break

Unwinding your mind and taking a break

to relax is something that a lot of us have

forgotten to do in 2020. Whether it is from

work, your social life, technology, or your

nearest and dearest, indulging in a relaxing

break is very important to reconnect with

yourself with a rejuvenated energy.

Work

Taking a break from work can be a challenge

especially when the end of the year deadlines are fast

approaching. However, it is important that you are

still taking a break. While dedication is an essential

element in achieving your dreams and making those

deadlines, taking a break is as important. Even your

30-minutes lunch break is important, as it prepares

you for the second half of the day. It can improve

your work performance and bring you back some

additional motivation. Taking a break at work is as

important as taking a break after work. Your social

and personal life can also be stressful, even if you

don’t feel so. Make some time to pick up a hobby

to enjoy after work.

Pick activities that relax your mind. These activities

may include: joining a gym, cooking a delicious

dinner, going to a spa, taking a pottery class or going

for an adventure. By taking a break from the stresses

of life, you allow yourself to be more mindful and

take a fresh approach towards life.

Technology

Taking a break from technology and social media,

while challenging, is something that everyone

should practice occasionally. It provides you with

an opportunity to detox and unwind. Some of us

work in industries that require a high amount of

digital intake. Set yourself a digital detox day. It

provides you with the opportunity to distance

yourself from any negativity associated with social

media platforms. It also relaxes your eye muscles as

you step away from the screen. Set a day in a week,

where you reduce your screen exposure and spend

more time doing relaxing activities like lazing in a

hammock, walking along the beach, baking some

delicious brownies or taking a relaxing bath.

23 | Hepburn

Social Life

Although, spending your whole weekend out and

about is fun for some, many people find that the

eustress makes them run down. Taking a break

from socializing can have beneficial impacts both

physically and mentally. It gives you time to focus

on yourself and get organized for the week ahead.

Sometimes, all you need is your own company.

Parenting

Obviously, taking a break from parenting is never

that simple but it is very important and much

needed. Taking a break whether it is for 5 minutes

to enjoy your morning coffee or an afternoon walk

around the block. Taking the time to yourself will

give you time to reflect, recuperate and recharge

for your parenting duties.

Life is as simple as we make it. So, take a break to

unwind, relax, and rejuvenate. You deserve it.

Passion

How is Anger Good for you?

By Sushmita Sharma

1. Any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate

2. A strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything

Anger is not one of the most pleasant emotions of a human being, but one that

may overpower many other emotions. Life, in the 21st century and especially

in the challenging times of 2020, is not as easy and simple as it used to be. It

is indeed full of exasperations and not all of us are stoics. Sometimes, anger

makes us impatient, frustrated, and angry at trivial things and sometimes it

teaches us how to accept those emotions to be successful. How many times

have you felt angry without regretting it later? The truth is you don’t have to

regret feeling the way you do.

19 25 | Hepburn

26 19 | Hepburn

Being angry is just as normal and basic as being

happy or sad, as long as your anger does not turn

to aggression or impact your relationship with

others. Knowing the reasons for your anger and

how to manage it is very crucial for your mental

health. Knowing how to express it without hurting

somebody’s feelings is even more important,

especially in the current times. There is a difference

between being angry to break something and being

angry to fix something. When you are angry to

rectify something or to make it better, you have a

source of motivation that you should not let go.

care about. Once you realise what you really care

about, you find ways to effectively communicate it

with compassion. Anger is a form of communication

that fuels self-awareness and acceptance. The next

time you find yourself being triggered by something,

try to take a deep breath and understand why you

are feeling what you are feeling. Let anger ignite

your curiosity.

Anger for better communication

Suppressing your anger does not mean you are

managing your anger. This also does not imply that

It’s time to stimulate your body…

When you find what you are

fighting for, you emerge as a

leader. Like Aristotle said:

“Anybody can become angry –

that is easy, but to be angry with

the right person and to the right

degree and at the right time and for

the right purpose, and in the right

way – that is not within everybody’s

power and is not easy.”

from the inside out

Anger as a source of motivation

Gender equality, celebration of LGBTQ+

community, environmental policies, race equality

and all the improvements in the society that we have

seen in this century would not have been possible

if a cadre of activists did not get angry and fight for

their rights. Sometimes, right things come from a

surge of angered feelings. It is in that moment when

one finds determination to reach a goal.

Anger fuels acceptance

Every time you get angry and every time you express

your feelings, you come closer to yourself. Anger is

an emotion that helps you realise what you really

you are entitled to hurt others verbally or physically.

Anger can inspire you to communicate your needs

and your true feelings with others. When you focus

your attention on what you are feeling and not how

others made you feel, you show compassion. At

the same time, using too many “I” statements can

make you look self-centred. Find the right balance.

Instead of blaming the other person with “How

could you do this?” make them understand why

you are angry by saying “I felt upset when you did

that.” Communicating with compassion will bring

you solutions that will relax your mind.

Anger can be uncomfortable for you and those

around you. It can also be rewarding when you use

it to improve yourself. At the end of the day, it’s all

about making the right choices!

My lead sentence was to begin “Last century there

were few countries that could boast to having

had a female leader” but as I began my research,

I realised how incorrect this statement was to be.

By the end of last century, at least 35 countries

had experienced a female Head of State. In 1960,

Sri Lanka became the world’s first country whose

citizens democratically elected a female leader.

Today, just 70 countries have had female leaders.

This figure includes those elected, appointed, or

otherwise in power. Very few nations have elected

a female leader more than once.

These are women who demonstrated leadership

with compassion and empathy. Angela Merkel

(Chancellor of Germany, 13 years) is one such

leader. I recall the awe I felt for Angela Merkel when

she opened Germany’s borders to provide asylum

to Syrian refugees, in 2015. That year, Germany

accepted applications from over 1 million refugees.

More recently and closer to home, we witnessed

the compassionate, empathetic and authentic

leadership style of Jacinda Ardern. Jacinda

demonstrated her vulnerability and expressed her

sorrow openly following the Christchurch attack

on the Muslim community. Across social and other

media, we witnessed the sorrow on her face, as she

mourned with her people and instinctively hugged

the families who had lost loved ones in the attack.

She gives witness to those who were lost rather than

raise the notoriety of the terrorist.

“Speak the names of those who were lost rather

than the man who took them. He may seek notoriety

but we will give him nothing, not even his name.”

Whether it is naïve or simply an honest approach,

it is this effective communication and authentic

leadership style that connects her to her people.

During the COVID-19 crisis, she took a 20% pay

cut, connecting and building consensus with those

who had lost their jobs or had their wages reduced.

43 | Hepburn

Inspiring International

Woman:

Jacinda Ardern

By Joyclyn O’Neill

“To me, leadership is not about necessarily being

the loudest in the room, but instead being the

bridge, or the thing that is missing in the discussion

and trying to build a consensus from there.”

We have all seen the compassion and connectedness

Jacinda communicated during the crisis to the

people of New Zealand. Her people! And her

people confirmed their love for Jacinda returning

her in a majority swing in the recent elections.

She is not New Zealand’s first female leader; in fact,

she is the third. But she is New Zealand’s youngest

leader since 1856, and at the age of 37 became the

world’s youngest female head of government. She

was nominated on pledges that covered minimum

wage increases, housing affordability, and address

child poverty by setting in law reduction targets.

She has implemented measures to address each of

these issues.

“Capitalism has failed our people. If you have

hundreds of thousands of children living in homes

without enough to survive, that’s a blatant failure.

What else could you describe it as?”

In a post-COVID world, leaders may struggle

with balancing strategic values with authenticity.

However, if lessons are learnt, the World Economics

Forum suggests the necessary traits post-COVID

will be led with empathy and honesty, maintain

agility, and value for your people.

These traits appear to be the natural reflection

of Jacinda’s leadership style. Time will tell how

she handles the political arena in a post-crisis

environment. But looking at New Zealand’s physical

and economic landscape, it is a country of volcanos

and earthquakes, a country climbing out of a

recession, a country recovering from the pandemic.

She shows a different kind of leadership, one that

puts kindness foremost. This authentic, connected,

kind style is just the leader New Zealand may

need now.

Everything I’ve ever thought

about doing has been, in some

sense, about helping people.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at the World Economic Forum World Economic Forum / Boris Baldinger
