Letter from the Editor
A New Story
By Shellene Van der Beke
Foremost, my heart goes out to the too many to count
number of people around the world who have lost a loved
one to the novel coronavirus. In British Columbia, at the
time of writing, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 276 of our
neighbours, family members, and friends. Here on Haida
Gwaii, although none, gratefully, have lost their lives to this
virus, in the past year so many of our beloved ones have
been taken from us. To those of us who grieve and mourn:
peace and comfort to us all.
To those of us who suffer with heartache, mental and
physical illness, addiction, and/or unprecedented levels of
stress, anxiety, and worry: let us go gently dear souls.
This issue marks the end of another year, and as I write this it causes me to pause. I sit,
thinking, trying to narrow down this past year to one all-describing word. Then my
shoulders start to tense, my eyes circle and my hands raise, palms up, and do a few of those
“I don’t know” circles in the air.
Uh…wow?
Gee whiz…oy?
I think we can all agree what a mind-bending year in the human epoch 2020 has been.
It is interesting to learn that this time in history is unofficially being called the
Anthropocene age - the time when human activity has significantly altered the earth. As
described in a post on outrider.org, although “we have existed for less than .05% of 1% of
the earth’s history,” our impact on this tiny little gravitationally bound star in the universe is
staggering.
On the one hand, thinking too big can cause one to feel pretty darn insignificant. But on
the other hand, it has become clear as clear can be that all things are invaluably connected.
The people of this planet are finally starting to get it: we are each a part of a greater whole.
There is hope, and dare I say a humble, kind, and respectful cause for celebration.
Undeniably, there is a pandemic-induced paradigm shift in thinking going on and it
is transitioning our world. Suppressive ideals that have resulted in walls, domination,
competition, and unsustainable environmental, economic, and social infrastructures are
being replaced by a new story.
The time has come for healing, restoration, alliances, and defining what is truly important.
For many, it is a strange and unfamiliar experience to feel downhearted and
full of hope at the same time.
Heartfelt holiday wishes to you and your family. Peace, prosperity, and good
health to all.

Corona in the Storm
by Margo Hearne
Masked people slip away from us in the store; we can’t tell if they’re going to mug
us or protect us from the covid they might have and we don’t. They whisper, in
case the bug, like an alien in the ‘The Silence’ will eat them if they can be heard.
The shelves have no flour but have an excess of canned soup. Outside
the store the wild wind blows and we have trouble staying upright, the
weight of our grocery bags barely hold us on this good earth.
After we drop our food at home we go out to the lonely dunes and watch
the wind pick up the ocean spray in spinning williwaws. The power of the
wind lifts the heavy water and throws it around like so much chaff.
We hold one another in the absence of grocery bags. Maybe our combined weight will
keep us grounded. Maybe, if we have Corona, the bug won’t survive this storm but we will.

WORKING TOGETHER TO CREATE
BUSINESS RESILIENCY
It was in the midst of Haida Gwaii’s first
Coronavirus outbreak when I started my
position as the Business Liaison at Haida Gwaii
Community Futures. I am a born and bred
islander, and over the years I have had the
pleasure of watching local businesses start-up
and expand, entrepreneurs who have immersed
themselves in the tightly woven fabric of our
communities. Due to the local and global effects
the of the pandemic, these businesses are now
in jeopardy of partial or total collapse as well as
dealing with the fear of the unknown. It was for
this reason I wanted to do all I could to help the
survival of these businesses on Haida Gwaii.
Business owners and residents I have been talking
to have shared a similar insight and concern for
the vulnerability of the economic landscape of
Haida Gwaii. While the pandemic continues, I
think we will see many entrepreneurs pivot their
business to sustain their livelihoods. Since the
islands have been closed since the beginning of
the pandemic, our tourism industry has been hit
the hardest. It is now that we need to proactively
generate solutions to help these businesses.
Whether it be to shop local, lend a helping hand,
inspire a change, or pivot a business model, it will
all be a result of us working together to prove
our resilience and ability to adapt.
For the last few months, I have been offering one
on one services, facilitating business owners’
access to resources available, and focusing on
recovery development planning for those who
have been affected by Covid-19. Just as the tides
and the winds can set their own course, we as
small businesses struggle to maintain the sails
we have raised, and bail our boats with whatever
bucket we can to stay afloat. As the uncertainty
of our future unfolds, there are silver linings of
human nature that we often forget about. If
we look at examples of our history, such as the
Spanish Flu or the Great Depression, we will
begin to acknowledge our resiliency and ability
to bounce back after unprecedented times of
turmoil.
We welcome all island businesses to seek out
our services and resources. We encourage you
to work hard to maintain your connection,
reach out and work with other local businesses,
because one thing we all know is that we are all
stronger together. We live in euphoric beauty
that holds the key for vast flexibility to shape our
communities to best suit us all.
Whether you’re looking for start-up financing or
expanding on an existing business, we are here
to help.

Youth Action on Haida Gwaii
Building Our Connection to Land
In October 2020, I asked youth about their hopes for community
action next year - what they’d like to see more of, and what would
help support their wellness. Looking back at this topsy-turvy year,
youth emphasize their connection to the land as one of the biggest
sustainers of mental health, and the primary focus of their callsto-action
for next year.
To foster a deeper connection to the land and its gifts, Hiit’aGan.
iina Kuuyas Naay Skidegate Youth Centre (HGKN) coordinated
virtual weaving workshops with Sgaas Sgwansing Shyla Cross in
April 2020. Over the course of three sessions, youth learned to
make their own coasters and earrings out of cedar bark. Young
people are finding true power in these practices. Claire Swain,
age 12, is an enthusiastic weaver. She created her own basket this
summer and used it to gather strawberries and rhubarb, which
she turned into jam.
Many of the youths’ hopes for the future are rooted in Haida culture.
“We need more traditional ceremony” says Reannah Ridley,
age 15. Also 15, Kuuyas Collison-Robertson shares: “I hope to see
more traditional food gathering, Haida art courses, Haida song
& dance practices, trips to traditional and sacred areas of Haida
Gwaii, and hopefully just anything to do with Haida culture! I love
doing cultural activities and so if more of those were around, it
would be pretty awesome!”
“We should go on more kayak trips! Paddle to a nearby island and
camp,” says 15 year old Cenita Sankey. Greta Romas, age 18, adds:
“Our communities could really benefit from getting year-long solar

powered greenhouses. We could be much more self-sustainable
and green, while also bringing the community together through
gardening.”
Gaadgaas Erika Stocker, the south end’s Local Food Pantry Coordinator,
has worked extensively in and around Sk’aadgaa Naay
Elementary in HlGaagilda Skidegate. “Everyone I talk to in the
school—students, teachers, parents—want to get out more onto
the land. It’s so nourishing for our spirits, bodies, minds.” There are
barriers, however, as Erika points out. “Transportation is a huge
cost. A bus for two days can cost a thousand dollars.” Together with
other community organizations, HGKN is finding ways to address
that issue and allow for more accessible shared transportation.
Looking into 2021, HGKN aims to continue offering projects for
youth, but also to build capacity among youth to lead projects
themselves. Projects related to Haida art and dance, digital storytelling
and filmmaking, and food security are in the works.
Overall, young people have made it clear that their collective vision
for a strong future is to forge deep, personal, and universally accessible
relationships with land and culture. Their ideas and energy
will help shape the future of Haida Gwaii.

A Naturalist’s Almanac:
Geese in the Meadow
The fall winds are blowing and the geese are on the move.
Over a thousand Cackling Geese, those small Canada’s,
landed in a field recently, brought down by the fierce
southeasters that had sprung from the vast ocean. Despite
their dainty size, they all rose in a fright when a plane
landed nearby. The birds circled in a noisy panic for ten
minutes or more before they settled down again. They
didn’t want to leave - the wind was against them and they
hadn’t quite finished eating.
There are many populations of Canada Geese; the more
we observe their comings and goings, the more we realise
that the ones who land here would die if they couldn’t
drop in. It is a welcome rest stop for them on the stormy
Pacific Flyway. However, where once we had just ‘Canada
Geese’ landing, we have learned that there are different
populations - Aleutian, Cackling, Dusky, Richardson’s,
Lesser, and the large Common (Western) Canada Geese
also land here. It’s interesting.
By Margo Hearne
Our own Haida Gwaii population is the mid-sized Dusky.
They nest in the muskeg bogs or on islets near fresh water,
and spend their lives here. They are probably an island
special. As someone once explained to me, the Duskies
that nest here have a shorter wingspan to enable flying
through the forest. This is not known for certain — no
Aleutian Cackling Geese
Dusky Canada Geese
specific studies have ever been done to prove it — but we
do know that they are joined almost every spring and fall
by the other populations that migrate through.
It’s fun to try separating one Canada Goose population
from another. The local Dusky is about thirty-eight inches
long, and it’s a useful ‘comparison’ bird for size and colour.
The Aleutian is only twenty-seven inches long, and the
Cackling is twenty-five. There’s a ten inch difference
between them — a lot in bird size. All three populations
have dark fronts.
The Richardson’s is also a small goose, ringing in at
twenty-seven inches, but is much paler than the previous
three. It’s more of a Prairie bird that migrates through
central Canada, although there have been occasional
sightings on Haida Gwaii. Then there’s the Lesser and the
Common, and this is where it gets tricky. The Lesser is
thirty-six inches long, only a couple of inches shorter than
our local Dusky, but has a very pale breast in contrast to
the darker island bird. But as David Allen Sibley writes
in his Guide to Birds, “the Lesser averages smaller and
darker to the west.” So just when we thought we had it all
worked out, the geese throw us a blinder. But that’s okay;
just seeing all those wild geese coming and going from
here is very special.

Goodbye 2020
Have you ever said, “Stop the world, I want to get off?”
This little catch phrase has perhaps never applied so
aptly to a time as it has to this year. In 2020, the world
really did stop. Nobody alive right now has experienced
such a worldwide shutdown.
When our world came to a halt, we lost our confidences,
our safety, our surety. The darkness of that loss shed a
light on all that we had taken for granted, and many
of us began to realize that those things we took for
granted were in some ways the very things that have
now brought us to our knees. Aside from essential
services, our economy slowed to a crawl. No matter
who or where you were in the world, nobody was immune
to the effects. In this year of immense struggle
and contradiction, it has become clear how very alone
and yet connected we all are to one another. And as
the world slowed, we were given the space and time to
review the system of which we are a part.
In isolation from each other, we realized we would
have no choice but to look inward, both as individuals
and as a collective called humanity. The economic
and social consequences faced by many this year have
shone a light on the chaos of the information age, and
the difficulty of finding any clear answers for anything.
Some of us are fortunate enough to still move around,
find places of refuge and safety. But many are far less
fortunate, stuck in places of exposure with no way to
protect themselves. The inequalities of our social world
are more clearly visible than ever, as highlighted by
the Black Lives Matter rallies and the many ensuing
conversations about systemic racism all over the world.
All of this is fodder for reviewing the state of our world.
Turning inward has been tough. The pandemic has
wreaked havoc on our psyches. People walk through
these days filled with conflicting emotions - stunned,
scared, helpless, mistrustful, suspicious, and also feelings
of relief, gratitude, peace, and love. It has brought
A Turning Point
By Tracy Gilson
out our very best and our very worst. It has united and
divided. It has killed and healed. It has created shields
of ignorance and waves of reality washing over us,
impossible to ignore.
Much in the same way that a funeral brings about
incredible moments of beauty that would not exist
without the loss, this year has been filled with the contradictions
of sadness and beauty. It is in these moments
that we can bring forgiveness, empathy, compassion,
and a reminder that time is precious. In times of great
loss, we are reminded of what is important. So, what
is important? What do I, or we as a collective, want to
leave behind as this year 2020 comes to an end? Of the
many struggles 2020 has brought to us, which ones are
going to lead us in a positive direction for the planet
and its inhabitants? One thing that is very obvious to
some, but not at all to many, is that many of the old
ways are coming to an end, and we must work to create
a better new reality.
There are a lot of things I would like to say goodbye
to as 2020 comes to a close. For example, closed communications
and radio silence when we reach out to
others in any situation. What I would like to see is
healthy transparency, honesty, integrity, kindness, and
compassion become more mainstream. Although we
have seen this happen on some levels, I feel we need
to bring more thought to it. If we want these things,
we must be willing to deal with the conflict or discomfort
that comes with it. This disconnect creates
greater divides, and when people don’t feel connected
it paves the way for all sorts of undesirable traits that
create multi-generational problems. Though conflict
might be uncomfortable and draining, it can also be a
way of paving the road to understanding each other’s
differences, and moving forward to being healthier
and happier people creating a healthier and happier
future for the planet.

Word on the Street
I ventured out to a variety of locations, asking people from every community of
Haida Gwaii about the positives and negatives of 2020. My two questions were:
1. What would you like to say goodbye to in 2020?
2. What was a positive that you saw come out of 2020?
Mike Hennigan – Daajing Giids Queen Charlotte
- An end to human greed.
+ There is a possibility we just might do that if enough change happens.
Norm Wagner
Norm Wagner – Daajing Giids Queen Charlotte
- The election and all of the negativity. People criticizing each other and not
cooperating with each other. When things get bad, that’s when we need to
cooperate more than anything.
+ The fact that Haida Gwaiians got to enjoy the islands all to themselves. Not
having to cater to visitors meant we got to reconnect with Haida Gwaii, enjoy
the peace and quiet.
Lori Wiedman – Daajing Giids Queen Charlotte
- The weather of 2020, it’s been March since March!
+ The way the communities of Haida Gwaii have come together, which
will hopefully continue. Also, the sounds of the many birds of our islands
have been memorable.
Ken Edgars, Hereditary Chief – Gaw Tlagee Old
Massett – Needan Gawee Naden Harbour
- Goodbye to COVID
+ Everyone started to pay more attention to this serious disease that is happening
and paying more respect to each other.
Haelie Wilhelm – Gamadiis Port Clements
- Say goodbye to the virus, I am done with it.
+ A lot of sense of community, people coming together, even people that hadn’t
spoken for years.
Ken Edgars
10 HG November / December 2020 11
Eugene Davidson – Gaw Tlagee Old Massett
- Not too sure, but goodbye to 2020 on the whole.
+ About the best thing was hanging out with family more. Also, how everyone
helped each other get through the year; that was probably the greatest positive.
We had kind of lost that, and now people have really started helping with food
and whatever they can.
Claudette Lavoie – Tll.aal Tlell
- Definitely say goodbye to COVID.
+ The good has been the realization of what is really important – family and
behaving in safer ways with the realization that it is a world pandemic. As a
full time teacher, I purchased a medical grade HEPA filter for my classroom
to keep myself and my students safe.
Guilio Piccioli
Guilio Piccioli – Daajing Giids Queen Charlotte
- Coronavirus... but we cannot say goodbye to it yet. It is going to be part of
next year, and with that comes the realization that we are not in charge, which
means letting go and going with the flow.
+ Because of our privileged place geographically and medically (and some
luck), we have been able to experience the many gifts of the pandemic, like the
gift of learning to let go, and practice this every day. Also being able to look at
what is in front of you in a more creative way. Another real gift that has come
is space. The world stopped, and that was a gift. I got to stop, spend time with
my children, have breakfast with my wife. I don’t want to go back to the way
things were before.
Aaron Southcott – Gamadiis Port Clements
- Goodbye to Trump
+ Greater cooperation within the political parties of Canada to help fight
COVID, and more community happening on a bigger scale across Canada.
Brock Storry
Brock Storry – Tll.aal Tlell
- Just the confusion and the unknown – goodbye to the unknown. It hit us
pretty hard.
+ This year brought people closer together in a way. It’s got people thankful for
what they have, and thankful for their community. We have all come through
fairly well and we are still doing it.
Gregory Williams – HlGaagilda Skidegate
- Coronavirus
+ That people here got to enjoy the island without the tourists (even though
it makes up 75% of my tattooing business). That the CHN really came together,
and with great leadership helped the communities, protected the
islands, and made a good firm stand to protect everyone over and above
the provincial recommendations.
Tracy Marrs - Gamadiis Port Clements
- Goodbye to COVID
+ New grandchild coming! Also, the community helping, specifically the Port
Rec Commission helping people to come together with food. They fed the seniors
and did a free drive through burger stand just to help people connect a bit.
Claire Hooper – Daajing Giids Queen Charlotte
- -Goodbye to Coronavirus and I don’t like the Fall because the leaves fall off
the trees, and I like them.
+ The care ninjas that anonymously surprised people with gifts and my new
pink mask!
Claire Hooper
Cheryl Bennett – Gamadiis Port Clements
- Coronavirus
+ Walking a lot more... Walked the beached more because of the isolation requirements,
found various great walks to do close to home.
Tracy Marrs (L) and
Cheryl Bennett
Merewyn Nicol – Gamadiis Port Clements
- Goodbye to COVID
+ Figuring out that we can work from home. COVID has increased valuable
family time.
12 HG November / December 2020 13
Bevan Nicol – Gamadiis Port Clements
- Goodbye to COVID and pollution.
+ The opportunity to participate in new and different opportunities online,
such as starting online classes at school and home for the Brazilian martial art
of jujitsu. These types of classes were never offered before COVID.
Bevan Nicol
Mindset Matters - Friends
By Jane Langton
Travis Glasman – K’il Kun Sandspit
- Goodbye to people taking exception to what one another say and reacting
based on an assumption of their motives or values, rather than asking for
clarification about the intention and meaning behind said words.
+ Hope that this might bridge the gap in our shared understanding, to sustain
this unprecedented level of engagement we are seeing, and the collective
reflection of 2020.
Gin Kampen - Daajing Giids Queen Charlotte
- Goodbye to Coronavirus and the separation that has come with it. Community
and connection are so important!
+ Building connections in small groups in different ways, which facilitated an
interesting way of getting to know people differently. Connection has often been
better this way because of the intimacy of small gatherings. There was more
incentive to be in touch with family in Winnipeg, and friends across Canada
by mindfully reaching out in new ways using technology, also writing letters
and sending care packages.
Gin Kampen
If nothing else, 2020 has given us a review, and the realization that we need to do things differently. Hopefully, this will be
a turning point for a new and better world.
I feel this is best summed up by a quote from Sonya Renee Taylor: “We will not go back to normal. Normal never was.
Our pre-corona existence was not normal other than we normalized greed, inequity, exhaustion, depletion, extraction,
disconnection, confusion, rage, hoarding, hate, and lack. We should not long to return, my friends. We are being given the
opportunity to stitch a new garment. One that fits all of humanity and nature.”
Nine years ago, a year after my Mum had passed, I
met I woman who I felt would be a friend of mine for
the rest of my life. You see, we are both English, we
both “get” each other, and we both have a weird and
sarcastic sense of humour. In some ways she felt like
my Mum reincarnated. I was taking a course at the
time, and needed to have participants in the classroom
setting. My new friend attended every single one of
them! It had been a long time since I’d felt the presence
of someone solid in my life, someone who would be
there for me no matter what. One day as we texted
back and forth I said, “I’m so grateful to have you as my
best friend.” I remember her reply… “Yes, I really love
having great friends in my life.” I laugh about it now.
At the time I absolutely got that she didn’t see me as a
best friend; I think she needed more time to get to that
place, but it didn’t matter to me. What was important
for me was how I felt with her in my life. You see, my
friends are so valuable for me. They are my family that
I’ve chosen… as the saying goes. I believe that we
can have many incredibly good friends, but each one
offers a unique way of being or a specific expression of
our personality. I also feel very privileged to have the
friends I do in my life, and while I don’t always feed the
fire of our friendship I hope they know I will always be
there for them.
Twenty years ago I started a group called The Daring
Divas. We were a group of women who got together
once a month to do something we’d never done before,
or something we’d never had the courage for but
always wanted to do. Each month we would pick an
adventure, and most of us were able to make it to each
event. For the most part, those who participated were
my bestest of friends. My weird and wonderful and
beautiful friends. The best part was how much fun we
all had together. It was like each one represented part
of my personality, and while we didn’t always agree
on everything we definitely did our best to encourage
each other, especially when it was time for one of us to
face a fear.
I had the chance to meet up with two of my bestest of
friends recently. One was moving across the country
for the very first time, and the other I just met for a
quick dinner. I hadn’t seen either of them in over a
year. It was quite the coincidence meeting my friend
who is moving across the country, as his adventure
was very last minute and so was our meeting. How
serendipitous! I don’t know when I will see him again,
but we will continue our telephone conversations
once a week as we’ve done for the last four years. And
because we do continue to keep in touch whether near
or far, it felt like we were having our usual meet-up.
When we said our goodbyes it felt really good. In other
words, I wasn’t sad, as I knew we’d be chatting again
soon.
I often feel like life is overwhelming and busy. There
have been far too many days recently when I’d like
to hide under the covers and enjoy only my own
company, but I sure am grateful for the friendships I
have. I hope those of you I am fortunate to have in my
life know how important you are.
By the way, my best friend at the beginning of this story
sent me a text about a year later with a “BFF” at the end.
I remember having a good happy cry when I saw that.
To this day I still remind her how she was slow to get on
board, but we have quite a laugh about it!

All Things Music:
House to House / Bexley Quinn Kaeon
By Jamie McDonald
“My style comes from the skater scene from the early
2000’s with hints of goth and Japanese Visual Kei.”
– Bexley Quinn Kaeon
The Haida Gwaii Coffeehouse got a Covid-19 makeover!
Indeed, the Coffeehouse and the Haida Gwaii Radio Society,
two groups that support local musicians, have initiated a collaboration
to offer the regular monthly coffeehouses online,
calling this ongoing event the House to House Open Mic. The
format will be the same as the previously held Coffeehouse
events, with the first half being open mic - any performer,
amateur or professional, can submit a piece (music, jokes,
spoken word, etc) of up to 7 minutes, in advance of the event
and in digital format, by uploading it to the House2House
dropbox (see web address below). The second half of the
event features a local musician. Both parts last about 40
minutes, and will be hosted on an online platform called
Twitch. Events take place on the 3rd Friday of each month,
and although feature performances will be posted on the
Cedar House Sessions YouTube channel, open mic performances
will only be aired once, during the event. So you’ve
got to be there or be square! Information about featured
artists will be available on the Haida Gwaii Coffeehouse
Facebook page.
The first Coffeehouse of the season took place on October
16th and featured Bexley Quinn Kaeon. I interviewed Bexley
over the phone the week before her performance. Bexley,
born and raised in Skidegate, started playing music in
2000, and has been playing music on island ever since, with
a mixture of styles including grunge, metal, and punk. Her
Bexley Quinn Bexley KaeonQuinn Kaeon
music is expressed through personal creations, some covers,
and collaborations with other musicians. “Nirvana got me
into playing music (the Never Mind album specifically). I like
to write music with 80s new wave vibes, disco baselines... an
amalgamation of what I’m listening to at the time”. When
I asked Bexley what themes inspire her songs, she said she
likes to express whatever she is feeling at the time in a way
that isn’t too straightforward, so that others can interpret the
song for themselves, and feel whatever comes up for them.
As well as performing solo, Bexley plays in a band called
BAEthoven.“I like writing the songs and presenting the demo
to the other members of the band, and asking them to play
it”. With two of the band members out of commission, that
collaboration is on hold. Bexley is currently working on an
Emo Rap album, and a punk pop easy core musical project
with Quentin Brown from Masset. You can find Bexley’s
music on the Cedar House Sessions YouTube channel, on
SoundCloud, and through her Tik Tok videos.
Next House to House Open Mic is on November 20th
featuring Rusty Mould and the Sugar Agates (Seb, Jay,
Marcus and Finn). For more details, check out the
Haida Gwaii Coffeehouse or the Haida Gwaii Radio
Society Facebook pages. Video submissions (max 7
minutes) can be loaded to https://www.dropbox.com/

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL
FOODS PROJECT
The directive of this local food initiative, as read by Jisgang, states that, “Over the next year, a team of food enthusiasts
would like to undertake a community engagement process to create an all-island strategy for the future of food on
Haida Gwaii. The HG Food and Water Strategy will begin by listening to the youth, elders, knowledge keepers, farmers,
and processors from the islands. Haida citizens and citizens of Haida Gwaii will also have an opportunity to voice their
vision of a food-secure island. This is the beginning of a critical process, and there’s a lot more engagement coming.”
Webinar dates to watch for: Nov 17 th Youth Food Ignited and Dec 9 th when we hear from elders around the island.
Check CHN FB page for links and details.
This past September, the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) presented an online webinar called Haida Gwaii Food Independence
(HGFI). Hosted by the ever gracious Jisgang Nika Collison, this event was documented by the delightfully
talented Live Graphic Recording artist Kara Sievewright, and now shared here with you, dear reader. Folks from both
on and off Haida Gwaii listened to and commented on a conversation that featured HGFI local food champions Jaada
Margaret Edgars, St’aay Taaw.waay Carla Russ, Gaadgaas Erika Stocker, Naajuuaa Michelle McDonald, Shelly Crack, and
Chris Horner.

We are all here to support each other
As we approach the end of 2020, I’m sure many of us
are reflecting on this unexpected year, a year that saw
our usual routines and expectations completely upended
by the COVID-19 pandemic. Eight months since
the emergency hit Canada in mid-March, we are all now
used to formerly-strange concepts like wearing masks
in public, staying a couple of metres away from other
people, and forgoing any events or gatherings. Obviously,
the new reality has had a huge effect on every aspect of
life, from our mental and physical health to our incomes.
We know a lot of people are worried about money, about
child care, and about taking care of the vulnerable elders
in our communities.
Here at the Gwaii Trust, the pandemic and
its effects have been consuming our attention since
March. Working remotely and holding virtual meetings,
our board of directors and staff moved immediately
to create a COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund at
the start of the crisis. As of October, this new fund
had distributed almost $800,000 to non-profit
organizations and local governments on Haida Gwaii.
We’ve been beyond impressed with the way applicants
have put forward innovative ways to support each other
and our communities, and at how these projects have
brought people together in the spirit of collaboration.
For example, the Haida Gwaii Recreation commission
is organizing winter activities for isolated seniors and
elders, Old Massett Village Council is organizing harvests
of deer meat to be shared in the community, and the Local
Food to School program has been taking care of school
greenhouses and providing food hampers to families. The
Queen Charlotte and Skidegate fire departments are
purchasing COVID-19 personal protective equipment for
their volunteers. The Council of the Haida Nation is
providing iPads to elders, while Old Massett and Masset
both got garden projects going over the summer season.
As part of our COVID response, we also created a
new Haida Gwaii Staycation grant, aimed at encouraging
islanders to enjoy local accommodations and tours. Since
late summer we’ve approved more than 100 applications,
giving locals up to $250 each to spend on tourism
businesses like accommodation, gear rental and fishing
charters. With the pandemic forcing us all to stay on-island
and cancelling the 2020 tourist season, the Staycation
grant allows us to explore adventures right here in our
backyard, while at the same time bringing just over
$50,000, so far, to local tourism businesses.
Christmas is coming and it certainly looks like this
holiday season will be an unusual one. Already, islanders are
planning creative, COVID-safe ways of holding traditional
events like craft sales and Christmas markets. As in past
years, our Winter Holiday grant provides $11,000 to each
Gwaii Trust community. The deadline for local government
to apply for this grant is December 1, and applications must
be received at least one month before events or projects
begin. Our website has full details.
From all of us at the Gwaii Trust, our warmest
wishes for this holiday season and the new year ahead. We
will get through this, together.

Thoughts from
Across the Pond...
"Consumer spending is chatty. It likes to
go out, have face-to-face contact, and it
loves mingling... Coronavirus loves that too
because corona needs us in order to hurt
us. The virus enlists us to infect others. Our
breathing does its dirty work. It makes us
complicit as it jumps from the sick to the
healthy. We are assassins for the virus, yet
we are also saviours of the economy. Saviour
or assassin, take your pick. The paradox of
the pandemic has an unforgiving logic."

Holiday Sense and
Centsibilities
By Manzanita Snow
Some great holiday season stress reducers, money
savers, and life-enjoyers could include slowing
down and doing less, asking for help, starting and
finishing that book you’ve been meaning to read,
minimizing the “glitz,” getting outside and picking a
few cranberries and making some cranberry sauce,
or taking a slow drive around your community to
check out the seasonal lights.
The additional ideas on the next page can be useful,
timely, and good for a laugh. Maybe try one or two
and have some fun good old-fashioned fun!
Plan an, “all day in
your pajamas” day
Decorate a food tree
out in the wild
(suet, dried fruit, evergreen cones smeared with
peanut butter then rolled in birdseed / away from
homes so bears aren’t attracted)
Have dinner at the beach with your
safe six
As we approach the time of celebration this year,
many of us may wonder just how we can look
forward to it. So many social barriers stand in
our paths, as well as financial stresses and family
challenges.
One thing we can do is let go. Let go of overwhelming
holiday obligations and expectations, and instead
choose more moments to just relax, breathe,
deepen our connections with family and friends (if
in person, of course, COVID-19 compliant), and be
grateful for what we have.
Make homemade gifts
Happy low stress and don’t break the bank holidays to all!

“Sure, we go to collect our Labrador tea and cranberries,
but many of us overlook its true importance.”
this is the sundew plant, a unique and strange plant whose
sticky appendages trap insects, which the plant then eats.
The Importance of Wetlands
I’ve never understood why everyone doesn’t love the bog
like I do. A few years ago, my dog Pongi and I had a tent and
kayak at a creek in a bog outside of Port Clements. I lived
there for the summer and enjoyed it fully. A friend came to
the islands that summer, and we hung out once in a while,
enjoying the rainforest and ocean. I was excited to show her
my bog spot, telling her she had to wear her rubber boots.
Halfway along the trail, she became angry and said, “Why
the #@%* would you have a spot in the bog?” I was so upset,
I stopped in my tracks, turned around and said, “We’re going
back.” She would never see my special bog spot.
The bog is out there, though we may not often think about
it. Sure, we go to collect our Labrador tea and cranberries,
but many of us overlook its true importance.
By Lori Macfarlane
There are five types of wetlands – bogs, marshes, swamps,
shallow water wetlands, and fens. A bog is a wetland with
little water movement, and is characterized by acidic, peatrich
soil and partly decayed organic matter. This unique
habitat is home to rare plants, birds, fish, and animals, and
has a profound effect on our health by improving water and
air quality. Bogs have also given us ingredients for healing
ourselves, such as Labrador tea for breathing conditions and
other medical ailments.
Wetlands (including bogs) provide natural water filtration
for ten percent of the earth’s fresh water, and with the slow
seepage of water, they also help to prevent flooding. The
acidic nutrient conditions of wetlands have led to the evolution
of adaptive plant and animal species. One example of
Bogs are some of the most ecologically diverse ecosystems
on the planet, providing habitat for thousands of species.
Bogs also help to regulate climate change as they accumulate
nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon
and sulphur.
Because so little is known about the importance of our
peat bogs worldwide, they are under threat from climate
change, population growth, land use, draining, and lack
of awareness. One quarter of the earth’s existing wetlands
are within Canada. If you would like to know more about
why it’s important to save our wetlands, have a look at
the Canadian Wildlife Federation website (cwf-fcf.org).

No longer just a buzz phrase, “Shop Local” has never been as
important a contribution to Haida Gwaii’s economy as it is right
now. People are really starting to ‘get it.’ Spend money at a local
shop…and that shop, many of which sell products that are locally
made or created using locally-sourced ingredients and some of those
shops employ local people…and those local people pay local taxes
and buy more local products! Round and round it goes. No matter
how small the investment, every dollar we spend is not just a matter
of helping our island economy to function, it is a matter of survival.
This year’s gift guide features products from eleven different retail
and artisan businesses. From cozy shawls, warm sweaters, top quality
tools and one-of-a-kind locally crafted art and jewelry to super fun and
functional stocking stuffers, you’re bound to check off a few names on

Masset Haida Lions Club - Telethon News
The Masset Haida Lions Club have made the difficult
decision to postpone the 41 st annual telethon that we
have successfully held since its inception in 1980.
As you all know, this live televised event normally allows
you to bid on items that our generous donors provide for
the holiday season. This event normally raises the majority
of our funds. We have considered the COVID restrictions
and challenges that all of our community partners have
faced this year. The army of volunteers that it takes to put
on the telethon makes it difficult for appropriate social
distancing measures.

For all of our community members who normally rely
on us for donations, we are still around and accepting
donation requests. In lieu of the telethon, we are moving
forward with planning a day of home videos, showcasing
your talents, along with games and trivia on the 5 th of
December. We are welcoming promotional videos/
commercials from businesses island wide.

High-Speed on Haida Gwaii
Planning for Tomorrow, Today
by Tomas Borsa
For the past two decades, the story of the Internet
on Haida Gwaii has been one of precarity and piecemeal
improvement. It was not so long ago that
dial-up was the only option, and only recently that
bandwidth was appreciably boosted by GwaiiTel’s
construction of additional radio towers. Along
the way, a host of reasons have been piled on in
an effort to explain away the substandard service
that has defined the islands’ digital landscape: too
remote, too spread out, too windy, too rocky, too
wet, too whatever.
Dead Tree Point Station and other photos from the PC Museum archives
But now, more than ever, it appears we may be
arriving at something of a Goldilocks moment, in
which a solution – or maybe even two – is on the
horizon.
In my last column, I hazarded a guess that
the headache caused by XPlornet’s sudden
announcement that it would be pulling out of Haida
Gwaii at the end of the year – leaving dozens of
island residents with no viable alternative – might
be mitigated by the rapid ascent of Elon Musk’s
Starlink, whose Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite
internet system looked poised to enter the market
sometime in the coming months.
Livestream of a pole raising in Prince Rupert
Since then, the company’s application for a Basic
International Telecommunications Services (BITS)
license was approved by the Canadian Radiotelevision
and Telecommunications Commission
(CRTC). While the CRTC’s decision does not in itself
guarantee anything, it does clear the way for Starlink
to carry on with its promise to deliver (very) highspeed
Internet to most rural regions across North
America by the end of 2021. Meanwhile, after years
of delay and uncertainty, the Connected Coast
project – a proposal to build a subsea fibre-optic
link from Prince Rupert to Haida Gwaii, then south
along the coast to Vancouver – appears to be back
on track. In a statement released in mid-October,
CityWest confirmed that the fibre build would be
proceeding as planned – with Haida Gwaii being
the first stop along it’s 3,400km loop.
Together, the CRTC’s greenlighting of Starlink and
CityWest’s (long overdue) thumbs up on its fibre
project all but guarantee that, one way or another,
Haida Gwaii is on course for a momentous change
in overall Internet standards within the next few
years. I guess when it rains, it pours. How fittingly
Haida Gwaii.
While we tend to think of the Internet as a magical
place separate from the ‘real’ world, in reality a new
part of our lives moves online every day. In the
years ahead, it seems fair to assume that the pace
will only quicken. So with the prospect of roundthe-clock
access to high-speed Internet inching
closer, I think it’s important that we pause and give
Skidegate’s Isabel Brillon on her shiny new SHIP laptop
thought to the ways in which daily life across the
islands could be re-shaped in the years ahead.
On the social front, we’ll need to consider how, as
our relationship toward the Internet shifts, so too
might our relationships with one another. Not only
may we find ourselves spending more time in front
of our screens, but as basic Internet infrastructures
improve, an ever- greater number of people from
off-island may begin to see Haida Gwaii as a viable
and attractive place to live and work. But where
will they live? Will they put down roots, or simply
buy up holiday homes? How will we deal with the
demographic shifts that could lie ahead?
On the economic front, there are already signs
that homegrown high-tech entrepreneurship may
soon come to play an important role in job creation
and retention. As ‘legacy’ industries like forestry
and commercial fishing continue to struggle, the
arguments for investing in digital innovation –
be that software development, crypto-currency
cooperatives, or any number of other things –
will only grow louder. In time, perhaps we’ll go
the route of communities in the Columbia Valley,
where fibre-optic upgrades have prompted a flurry
of investment into start-ups using repurposed log
sorters, sawmills, and shipping containers to create
modular data servers.
On the environmental front, universal high-speed
access could bolster efforts toward improving the
islands’ energy security, both by providing the
means to more accurately gauge home energy
input and by providing the building blocks to
establish grid-sharing, which works on the premise
of ‘trading’ energy between a network of batteries
connected to each other by way of the Internet.
Similarly, as the dependability of the Internet
improves, bandwidth-intensive technologies that
might previously have been out of the question
could support the work of the Watchmen, alongside
biologists, marine scientists, and foresters.
Even if there are a few bumps in the road – even if,
for example, either CityWest or Starlink ultimately
fail to make it ashore – in the span of a few years we
may have all but forgotten there was ever a time
that we couldn’t stream Netflix on Nadu Road on
four screens at once. The future has never been
brighter for this networked tomorrow. Let’s start to
envision the Haida Gwaii of the future.
Editor’s Note: Just before this issue went to print, our Member of Parliament Taylor Bachrach
announced that XPlornet will be extending its service in Tlell for another two years. Here’s hoping
this will provide the time needed to bring the right Internet service for these Haida Gwaii residents.

Aries (Mar 20 - Apr 19) Issues right now may have taken you to
a high level of intensity, and that is not easy to assimilate, dearest
Aries. To get the most out of your life, it’s important to acknowledge
this. You may view this time as thoroughly positive or mostly
negative, but you won’t view it as boring. Be willing to stay focused,
knowing that the longer you live in the here and now, the better
off you will be because you will see it through the lens of the truth.
Keywords: authenticity, plain talk, and whole story.
Taurus (Apr 19 - May 20) If I had one word to use for this time,
dearest Taurus, it would be radical honesty. I guess thats two words,
but it brings me to the point; relationships in your life are asking you
for fierce commitments. Are you willing to risk your peace of body
and mind to speak up for what is important to you? This is your
question. Keywords: access, articulate, and express.
Gemini (May 20 - Jun21) Structure is now in order, dearest Gemini.
Especially around your career and your mission in life. The more
that you can focus and organize, the better you will feel about your
future. Re-look at what it takes to do you and concentrate on completing
any tasks that are required to free up your time in the near
future. Keywords: spotlight, sharpen, and zero-in.
Cancer (Jun 21 - Jul 22) You are always looking at ways to serve
your community, dearest Cancer. Today might be the day to consider
volunteering for something that you find worthy. Mentor a young
person, or if you are a young person, find a wise elder that can mentor
you. You have come to a place that requires you to dot your i’s
and cross your t’s. Get it all in order and be the change you want to
see in others and in our world. Keywords: shift, transform, and shape.
Leo (Jul 22 - Aug 23) Party and create is what you feel like doing,
dearest Leo. And this is the perfect time to enjoy your life. When
you are up to it, you are the most creative force around. So, make
something out of nothing. Live a life worth living. Be who you really
are. I just ask you to do this with wise mindfulness. You have much
energy around how you will shape relationships using hope, structure,
and transformation. Don’t forget that while you are feeling free,
there are loving relationships that require your attention. Try to do
both well. Keywords: attentive, conscious, and knowing
Virgo (Aug 23 - Sept 22) As you look deep within, dearest Virgo,
ask yourself: how you can improve your home life? Do your loved
ones need more of your focused time? Or do you need to focus on
yourself more to have enough energy to stay positive in your day?
You have many options at your feet and not enough time to do it all.
So, prioritize the important, and head in that direction. Keywords:
formulate, calculate, and draft.
Libra (Sept 22 – Oct 23) There are forces at work, dearest Libra, that
are asking you to look at how healthy your self confidence is, especially
around your finances. You have an opportunity to learn how
to keep these things in balance now. What is it that you deeply care
about and how are you going to make a difference? Keep in mind
that whatever you feel emotional about is where you need to direct
your attention. Keywords: purpose, objective, and aim.
Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 22) You are coming across as a bit blunt,
dearest Scorpio. And I’m not asking you to change this in any way.
In fact, this is your perfect time to call it as you see it. I just want you
to know that whatever you choose as your presentation style will
be directly related to how others can digest your material. Are you
just trying to blow off steam or do you really want to see some deep
changes? Keywords: forthright, matter of fact, and diplomatic.
Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 22) You are not prone to cautiousness,
dearest Sagittarius. You are an adventurer who is typically willing to
do and say whatever comes to mind. But you are being asked to step
back a little bit and feel what is and has been. Self confidence and
safety want to speak to you now. You just need to get quiet enough
to hear it. Walk in nature, create something out of nothing, or do
anything that allows you to experience the world of peace. Keywords:
stillness, unity, and patience.
Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 20) The balance between what your mission
in life is and how you can achieve this without discounting family
and friends, is at its peak, dearest Capricorn. There are forces that
feel out of your control, and we all know that this can be uncomfortable
for you. There is a harmony that can be achieved when you
prioritize work and family equally and eliminate all the extras that
don’t need your attention ASAP. There is time to get to it all done if
you don’t try to do it all at once. Keywords: align, focus, and connect.
Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 19) I think you are getting the travel bug
again, dearest Aquarius. What a surprise! As you continue your
journey of life, remember these key points: stay organized and flexible,
realize there are responsibilities that can’t be easily ignored, and
embrace the surprises along the way. Do all this and you’ll appreciate
all that life has to give. Keywords: voyage, problem-solving, and trek.
Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20) Now is the time to dive deep into your
feelings and what you are going to do about your feelings, dearest
Pisces. I know that sounds a bit confusing. And it probably is. Just
realize, that the sooner you analyze how you feel about certain
issues, the quicker you will be able to heal those and move on to
new adventures and attitudes. Keywords: awareness, sensitivity, and
restore.

Cabin/House wanted to rent. Hello Haida Gwaii! I am an essential worker that might be moving
to the area sometime in November. I am looking to rent a cabin/house in a private setting,
surrounded by woods, waterfront etc., that is close to, or a reasonable commute to Masset. I am a
single professional, non-smoker, with two well-behaved dogs. Rental could turn out to be a longterm
situation. This is a serious inquiry. Looking forward to hearing from those with available
properties or leads on accommodation. This might also be of interest to tourism operators with
cabins that are looking to supplement their income given the current restrictions placed on that
sector. Although the above is my preference, I would also consider a house in town with a fenced
yard. Thanks! Call Alan Smith at (519) 671-2648 or email taigh.nan.alba@gmail.com
